As the ball dropped in Times Square and people everywhere sang inebriated versions of “Auld Lang Syne”, it marked the end of a lukewarm movie year. With 557 movies released in 2010, some of them were truly good and others were excruciatingly bad. People could argue all day about what makes a movie truly bad, but thankfully we have the 31st annual Golden Raspberry Awards to help us sort the chaff from the wheat.

Although the official list of nominees won’t release until January 24th, the L.A. Times Award Tracker blog has released the shortlist of nominees for the coveted “Razzie” or Golden Raspberry Award.

If you're a horror movie fan who's disappointed at the current state of affairs, here are five things YOU can do to encourage Hollywood to get things back on track.

It’s getting pretty scary out there for horror fans.

Horror hounds have suffered for years with weak remakes, torture porn-a-paloozas and other degrading attempts to make us jump. But 2010 represents a new low for the genre.

The Nightmare on Elm Street remake couldn’t scare a third grader. The biggest reaction to Devil came when audiences laughed over the story credit – “from the mind of M. Night Shyamalan.” And Survival of the Dead proved the zombie genre George A. Romero created has left him in the dust.

And let’s all agree that none of the Twilight films should be thrown in the horror category.

What’s worse is when a solid horror entry hits theaters it made precious little coin. Both Piranha 3D, the very definition of a B movie delight, and Let Me In underperformed during ...

Click to continue reading Top 5 Ways To Save Horror Movies

The film should score about $23 million over the weekend, and could continue to do well due to strong reviews and positive word of mouth.
Ben Affleck is the man about Town; Shawn Levy is the Deadliest Warrior; Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion spreads; Sony Pictures is Insidious; Ron Perlman gets ready to Drive; Al Capone goes to Cicero; Harrelson, Foster, Cube, Buscemi, Heche, Nixon, Weaver and Wright visit Rampart; and more.

Box Office

Ben Affleck is back! The Oscar-winning star has topped the box office with The Town. The film, which he directed, starred, and co-wrote, brought in an estimated $23.6 million over the weekend. Affleck has had quite a decade, after his breakout hit Good Will Hunting alongside pal Matt Damon, he went on to star in a string of hits (and misses), headlining quite a few big budget action films. However, his relationship with Jennifer Lopez caused a tabloid frenzy, leading to over-exposure in the media – leading Affleck to shun the limelight in favor of supporting roles in smaller pictures. He made ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: September 19, 2010

Screen Rant’s Kofi Outlaw Reviews Devil

If you’ve been in movie theaters the past few months, then you surely know the reaction people have had while viewing the trailer for Devil: they sit quietly intrigued up until the tagline “From the mind of M. Night Shyamalan” pops up on the screen. That’s when the laughs and/or boos begin.

However, it should be remembered that Shyamalan’s involvement with Devil is only that he wrote the story for the film and helped guide it along as the first chapter in his unfolding trilogy, The Night Chronicles. And let me tell you: having Shyamalan at a distance makes all the difference in the world. Devil may not be the greatest ghost story ever told, but it’s far more enjoyable than you might be expecting.

The premise is classic Shyamalan: On stormy ...

Click to continue reading ‘Devil’ Review

A new featurette has been released for Devil, the new horror-thriller "from the mind of M. Night Shyamalan," which is set mostly within an elevator.

A new behind the scenes featurette for Devil has been released, the forthcoming horror-thriller about five strangers trapped in an elevator who soon realize that one of them is not who/what they appear to be.

It’s an intriguing premise and I really hope that the directorial efforts of The Dowdle Brothers can do the idea justice. The film comes “from the mind of M. Night Shyamalan” as the promos all state, but I’m not so sure they should be bragging about that considering his movies have gone seriously downhill ever since Signs (the crowd at Comic-Con went from silently interested to booing when Shyamalan’s name came up onscreen during the trailer).

Nevertheless, Shyamalan only wrote the story for Devil (although the actual screenplay was written by Brian Nelson of 30 Days of Night and Hard Candy) and produced ...

Click to continue reading New Behind the Scenes ‘Devil’ Featurette

It’s no secret that M. Night Shyamalan’s career has been put under the spotlight, even more than before, ever since The Last Airbender. We even debated what happened to the man who brought us The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable. A brand new, hilarious College Humor video reenacts the strange, new world for Shyamalan.

Shortly after the generally ill-received release of The Last Airbender, a new trailer cropped up in theaters. The trailer was for Devil, a thriller that takes place within an elevator, written by Shyamalan. The trailer is riveting and intense, grabbing its audience. But when the screen shows “From the mind of M. Night Shyamalan,” nearly every theater full of movie fans erupted in moans, groans and laughs. It is true – ...

Click to continue reading SR Pick [Video]: No One Likes M.
Summertime and all that easy living is now done, and unless you’re one of those people who lives where the sun is always shining then the onset of Fall means four things: colder weather, earlier sunsets, heavier clothing and movies galore.

Yes, the summer has all those big blockbusters we’ve been waiting all year to see, but Fall is the time when we actually want to be in the movie theater: when being outdoors is no longer an attractive alternative and the cinema offers many, many, award-worthy films. A few of them even stand the chance of being pretty good.

Of course the Fall movie landscape has been changing pretty radically in the last few years: September is now a “showcase for unique genre films” instead of just a studio dumping ground ; ...

Click to continue reading Screen Rant’s 2010 Fall Movie Preview

September is nearly upon us and with it comes the arrival of two horror movies of a different breed – the 3D action-packed Resident Evil: Afterlife and the suspenseful thriller Devil.

A couple of new TV spots for the fourth Resident Evil flick have been released, with less than two weeks left before the movie arrives on the big screen – in addition, a clip from the first entry in the Night Chronicles trilogy has made its way online for viewing as well.

It’s been a somewhat lackluster summer movie season – with only a few highly anticipated films living up to their hype. While box office numbers are still strong there were plenty of high-profile films that failed to impress audiences.

The somewhat disappointing summer has left an empty void in a lot of moviegoers – a void that the Fall 2010 film season is prepped to fill.

We locked Screen Rant’s Mike Eisenberg in his production office, with only week old saltine crackers and water, until he successfully produced a Fall preview trailer worthy of the bar he set with his Ultimate 2010 Summer Movie Trailer.
M. Night Shyamalan hopes to terrify moviegoers (for the right reasons) with Devil, the first entry in the Night Chronicles trilogy, which is being produced but not directed by the Sixth Sense filmmaker.

Devil revolves around five pedestrians – played by Geoffrey Arend, Jenny O’Hara, Logan Marshall-Green, Bojana Novakovic, and Bokeem Woodbine – who become trapped in an elevator together. A series of bizarre, violent events ensue thereafter, which eventually leads the group to believe that one of their number is actually the Devil in disguise.

Shyamalan devised the story for Devil, which was written into screenplay form by Brian Nelson and directed by Drew and John Erick Dowdle (Quarantine). Both the trailer and official poster for the film prominently featured the phrase “from the mind of M.

This week:

The Expendables edges out five new releases at the weekend box office; Underworld 4 will rise in January of 2012; Mark Strong talks Green Lantern; creepy elevator images from Devil; Ryan Reynolds is one hard-working guy; Google is getting its own movie; the production schedule and shooting location for Super 8 has been revealed; and lots more.

Box Office

Sly Stallone and his brigade of manly men retained the box office crown for a second weekend as The Expendables was top dog yet again. The ultra-explosive action flick grossed an estimated $16.5 million, raising its 10-day total to just under $65 million in the U.S. Does this mean Expendables 2 will happen after all? If it does, then Chuck Norris had better join the party the next time around.

Jeff Bridges has never looked as suave as he does in the new international poster for his 3D sci-fi sequel, Tron Legacy; the same goes for the curiously religious elevator on display in the latest one-sheet for the horror flick, Devil.

Disney put on another good show at the 2010 Comic-Con in promotion of their upcoming Tron Legacy, which should be quite the visual extravaganza in 3D and IMAX 3D. Director Joseph Kosinski will helm the pic, which will see Jeff Bridges reprise his role as Kevin Flynn from the original 1982 Tron movie.

Joining Bridges will be Garrett Hedlund as Kevin’s technologically-capable son, Sam, andl House M.D. star Olivia Wilde – who, as those that follow her on Twitter know, is currently off romping around in a bikini on the set ...

Click to continue reading New Posters For ‘Tron Legacy’ & ‘Devil’

Universal Pictures just announced that The Adjustment Bureau‘s release date has been pushed from September 17th, 2010 to March 4th, 2011. Taking its spot will be the upcoming thriller Devil, by The Brothers Dowdle based off a story by M. Night Shyamalan.

This is one of the stranger release date changes in recent memory. After the opening weekend success of the mind-bending Inception and the epic failure of M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender may very well be the worst movie of his career, but that doesn’t mean the guy can’t still come up with an interesting original story.

Take Universal’s Devil for example. The film, which is based on a Shyamalan story, revolves around a group of five individuals who are trapped in a skyscraper elevator. The twist? One of them is the Devil. If you think that sounds interesting, just wait until you see the first trailer.

Offering a mix of psychological and supernatural horror, the Devil trailer hints at a movie that is suspenseful – and will keep audiences guessing.

Of course, no matter how good the movie looks, some people may not give it a chance – simply ...

Click to continue reading First Trailer for M.
[Update: We've now have a synopsis about the plot of Devil]

M. Night Shyamalan is one of those divisive directors in Hollywood – not because of politically controversial film topics like say Michael Moore, or over-the-top art house edge like Lars von Trier. He doesn’t even make it into the mainstream news media spouting off-hand remarks, or getting picked up while driving drunk, flinging anti-Semitic racial slurs. No, Shyamalan divides audiences into those that love his work and those that don’t because of his story telling; there’s no real fence-riding when it comes to his films.

Shyamalan’s next story, Devil, a horror-thriller, is being backed by Universal and directed by brothers John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle (Quarantine) with actor Chris Messina (Julie and Julia) attached to star. Brian Nelson (30 Days of Night) wrote the script based ...

Click to continue reading M.

Welcome to the first Weekend Movie News Wrap Up of November. Let’s see what movie news we can read to take our minds off buying Christmas presents.

This week:

Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman read The Book of Eli; Samuel L. Jackson is a Dragon; Ridley Scott is howling; Shyamalan is a Devil and just what is Genesis: Apes?

Box Office

Halloween hit the box office hard this week! It’s no surprise that Saw V mutilated the number one spot on Friday with a gross of just over $3 million. Look for the horror franchise pic to gross $9-10 million by Monday morning.

Clint Eastwood’s Changeling should also make some change in the $9-10 million range over the weekend. However, expect the Angelina Jolie film to have legs like…er… Angelina Jolie. High School Musical 3 dropped by a terrifying 90% on Halloween night grossing a mere $1.7 million. Don’t worry Effronettes that’s because most ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: November 2, 2008
