The cinematic adaptation of Marvel’s Deadpool has been stuck in development hell for some time now, a situation that doesn’t seem likely to immediately improve now that the character’s intense popularity has begun to wear off.

Still, Ryan Reynolds (who has been doing the rounds for Safe House) is optimistic that it’ll get made eventually.

In a recent interview, he talked about the proposed film — which apparently no longer has any connection to X-Men Origins: Wolverine – and discussed whether or not we’ll see a sequel to 2011′s greatest superhero flop, Green Lantern.

On the quality of Deadpool‘s current screenplay, courtesy of IGN, Reynolds said:

X-Men movie fans have had to be patient in recent years – what with FOX pushing out poorly-conceived flicks like X-Men: The Last Stand and Wolverine after the success of Bryan Singer’s two X-Men films (and before Matthew Vaughn’s saved the franchise with his prequel/reboot X-Men: First Class). That’s not to mention the perennial wait for Deadpool, a movie that has been dangled above the heads of all those X-fans who have been hoping for nothing more than a chance to see Marvel’s Merc with a mouth (dis)grace the big screen.

The Deadpool movie has been crawling through development for several years now; to date it has secured X-Men movie visual artist Tim Miller as a director, an R-rated script by Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, ...

Click to continue reading Rob Liefeld (Sort of) Talks About ‘Deadpool’ Movie Test Footage

While Ryan Reynolds is uncertain about the status of 'Green Lantern 2', he promises that the 'Deadpool' movie is still in the works.

Those who didn’t get their Ryan Reynolds fix from Green Lantern can amend the situation by checking him (and the movie) out in The Change-Up this Friday (look for our review later this week).

Comic book fans are likely more interested in hearing about two upcoming Reynolds-centric projects – Green Lantern 2 and Deadpool. According to the actor, he’s still hopeful about getting to play Wade Wilson onscreen (again), but doesn’t know yet whether he’ll be donning CGI green duds as Hal Jordan for a second time.

Next on the agenda for Reynolds is the Dark Horse comic book adaptation, R.I.P.D. Afterwards, he may be teaming up with visual effects artist-turned-director Tim Miller on Deadpool, which will be a “total reboot” of the title character, following his appearance in X-Men Origins: ...

Click to continue reading Ryan Reynolds Offers ‘Green Lantern 2′ & ‘Deadpool’ Updates

Get ready for Masters of the Web featuring our own Vic Holtreman; Tom Cruise rocks out with his..er… shirt off in Rock of Ages; there’s change ahead for John Travolta’s Gotti biopic; Green Lantern is in the red but Ryan Reynolds talks Deadpool and Kate Winslet as well as Josh Brolin join Jason Reitman’s Labor Day.

Box Office

It’s not easy being green and for Warner Bros, it’s not easy starting a new superhero franchise. Sure, they successfully rebooted the Batman series, and they’ve got a new Superman film off the ground, but in recent years the studio has struggled to get films like The Flash and Justice League out of development hell – not to mention the recent Wonder Woman TV debacle. Meanwhile, Marvel characters have been flourishing on the big screen, with X-Men, Thor and Captain America all kicking butt this summer. ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: June 19th, 2011

Less than two weeks ago, X-Men franchise producer Lauren Shuler-Donner provided an update on the status of X-Men Origins: Deadpool, reiterating what we heard from Ryan Reynolds about the film having a stellar script, one that’s R-Rated. She indicated the Reynolds was still on board and that the film’s story would entirely ignore that of the character’s awful introduction in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

There are two things holding back the realization of what may be a proper adaptation of the Deadpool character from Marvel Comics: Green Lantern and a lack of a director. One of those problems just got solved.

During press interviews at WonderCon, Ryan Reynolds was frequently asked about the status Deadpool and whether or not Green Lantern and potential sequel duties would prevent his involvement. Sure enough, he sounded dedicated ...

Click to continue reading ‘Deadpool’ To Be Directed By Tim Miller

X-Men franchise producer Lauren Shuler-Donner reveals that the 'Deadpool' movie is a true reboot and that it's currently sitting with an R-Rated script.

With X-Men: First Class hitting theaters in just a few months and The Wolverine hopefully starting production soon, X-Men film fans are undoubtedly curious as to what is coming next from Twentieth Century Fox for Marvel’s mutants. We just reported on producer Lauren Shuler-Donner’s bomb-drop that X-Men 4 & 5 are in “active development,” but she didn’t stop at that.

In the same feature in the upcoming issue of Empire, Donner also touched on the Deadpool movie, a film we’re optimistic about but also concerned for.

With X-Men Origins: Wolverine doing a terrible job of handling the character of Wade Wilson, the man who becomes the infamous Deadpool, there’s been uncertainly as to how the studio and writers will handle the character in his own spin-off. Combine that with ...

Click to continue reading Deadpool Movie A ‘Total Reboot’ With An R-Rated Script

There’s something amusing about how David Slade’s decision to helm the third film in the Twilight series, Eclipse, ultimately (in part) led him to snag the job of rebooting Daredevil for Fox – as well as being rumored as a contender to helm not only Deadpool, but also The Wolverine, now that Darren Aronofsky has stepped down.

It’s appropriate, then, that the 30 Days of Night filmmaker has spoken out – or, rather, tweeted – and provided some perspective on these matters.

Ryan Reynolds talks about why the Green Lantern's costume ought to be CGI, and insists that a 'Deadpool' movie will happen.

Ryan Reynolds may be one of the hardest-working stars in Hollywood right now, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t taking time to consider fan reactions to early Green Lantern footage – or that he’s forgotten about the seemingly stagnant Deadpool movie, which he remains attached to (if only in spirit).

The first Green Lantern trailer provided an early look at Reynolds’ CGI outfit and, admittedly, the costume could stand some improvement. A number of fans are just against the idea of a digitally-created suit on principle, and it’s on that point that Reynolds disagrees.

Now that the first official Green Lantern trailer has released to the masses and received not-so-positive feedback, some comic book fans wish that star Ryan Reynolds had taken the Marvel route to instead play Wade Wilson in Deadpool for Twentieth Century Fox. Since Green Lantern finished principal photography, the hype train from fans and Warner Bros. has been picking up steam, with talk of greenlighting Green Lantern 2 before the first film even debuted. Again, that was until the trailer came out.

One of those fans with a strong desire for Fox to get moving on Deadpool is from his creator, Rob Liefeld, and he’s also been one of the main sources of updates on the project since X-Men Origins: Wolverine first introduced moviegoers to the idea of ...

Click to continue reading Rob Liefeld Concerned For ‘Deadpool’ Movie

It looks like Robert Rodriguez will not be directing the 'Deadpool' movie; a Swedish commercial director is now being in consideration to helm the film.

Fans of Marvel’s cult-favorite character Deadpool may be more interested in whether or not Ryan Reynolds will play him in the upcoming movie, but who directs the movie is pretty important as well.

Machete director Robert Rodriguez has been attached to Deadpool for awhile now, but scheduling conflicts with his upcoming Spy Kids 4 have threatened to force him off the project. Well, it’s sadly looking like Rodriguez will not direct Deadpool and according to 24 Frames a new, unknown director may be taking his place.

“Sources familiar with the project” are saying that Adam Berg has emerged as the likely choice to direct Deadpool. “Who’s Adam Berg?” I hear you ask. Well, he’s a Swedish commercial and video director who hasn’t directed any feature films. The obvious choice, right? <img src='http://cdn.screenrant.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif' alt=':-P' ...

Click to continue reading Rodriguez Not Doing Deadpool; Newcomer May Direct

Ryan Reynolds is talking 'Deadpool' again, echoing praise for the latest version of the script, which has already generated a good amount of buzz amongst Deadpool fans around the Net.

We here at Screen Rant are big supporters of the Deadpool movie, which has been in the works for awhile now, and we were extremely happy when our friends over at Cinema Blend recently reviewed the script for Deadpool and came back saying that the movie was going to have all the violence, laughs and 4th wall-breaking antics fans of the Merc With a Mouth have always been demanding from a cinematic adaptation of the character.

Ryan Reynolds – the man who is widely regarded as THE guy to play Deadpool – recently opened up to Total Film Magazine about the Deadpool script, and echoed the very same praise for the movie which has been circling the Net.

A review of the latest draft of the Deadpool movie script has emerged online - according to the reviewer, the film could potentially 'be the 'Dark Knight' of R-rated superhero movies.'

Cinema Blend has gotten their mitts on the most recent draft of the Deadpool movie screenplay by Zombieland writing duo Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and their reaction can be summed up as follows: this film needs to be made, now.

Both director Robert Rodriguez and star Ryan Reynolds would be hard-pressed to work on Deadpool if 20th Century Fox pushed for production to begin in the near future, but – according to the script reviewer – the comic book flick would be a perfect match for both of these fellows.

Here, in a nutshell, is the gist of the Deadpool script review (NO SPOILERS, we promise):

“In it’s best moments, [reading the 'Deadpool' script] is like reading ‘Van Wilder’ meets ‘Kill Bill’, a genius mix of insane dark comedy and ridiculous ...

Click to continue reading ‘Deadpool’ Script Review Is Extremely Positive

For a while there, feelings of fear and potential disappointment crept in for many fans when soft rumors floated around that Ryan Reynolds and his increasingly busy schedule may not allow for him to play the title role in the production of X-Men: Deadpool for Twentieth Century Fox.

A spinoff of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, while having nothing to do with it as a quasi-reboot of the character’s origins, Deadpool is one of several Marvel properties in development at Fox. It hit a bit of a roadblock when shortly after being greenlit, star Ryan Reynolds also nabbed the lead role in Green Lantern, the big budget superhero movie from Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment.
The mercenary Deadpool will eventually make the leap from comic book to the big screen, but his movie may not feature director Robert Rodriguez at helm after all.

This week:

The Expendables edges out five new releases at the weekend box office; Underworld 4 will rise in January of 2012; Mark Strong talks Green Lantern; creepy elevator images from Devil; Ryan Reynolds is one hard-working guy; Google is getting its own movie; the production schedule and shooting location for Super 8 has been revealed; and lots more.

Box Office

Sly Stallone and his brigade of manly men retained the box office crown for a second weekend as The Expendables was top dog yet again. The ultra-explosive action flick grossed an estimated $16.5 million, raising its 10-day total to just under $65 million in the U.S. Does this mean Expendables 2 will happen after all? If it does, then Chuck Norris had better join the party the next time around.

Robert Rodriguez is being so coy about Deadpool it’s almost adorable. Though it was widely reported nearly a month ago that he was in serious negotiations to direct the X-Men: Wolverine Origins spin-off, word comes today that he is still, alas, noncommittal.

“It’s a great script,” Rodriguez said, referring to the screenplay penned by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Zombieland). “I’m just working everything out.”

Apparently, Rodriguez has yet to decide if he’s going to pursue Deadpool next, or a pet project like Sin City 2 (or an as yet unnamed third option).
Fox’s proposed Deadpool movie has been the red and black elephant in the room ever since Warner Bros. expressed their immediate desire to move forward with a Green Lantern sequel – and hinted a third film would follow closely after.

Evidently, there could be more to the rumblings than WB’s confidence in the film – they could be trying to prevent star Ryan Reynolds from simultaneously starring in two comic book film franchises.

About six weeks ago the news broke on Robert Rodriguez being offered the director’s chair for the Deadpool movie, an X-Men spinoff which will star Ryan Reynolds as the infamous “Merc with a Mouth.” Now comes a report which reveals that the Rodriguez-Deadpool marriage is at least one big step closer to becoming a reality.

A solo film for the character of Deadpool – who was completely ruined in X-Men Origins: Wolverine – has been in development since his debut in the Wolverine flick early last year. Ryan Reynolds, the perfect and natural choice for the character, played his part to perfection despite the unfortunate writing/story decisions made as to how to handle the character, but it at least served the purpose of launching a separate starring vehicle for Reynolds to play ...

Click to continue reading Robert Rodriguez in Negotiations to Direct Deadpool

Industry legend Richard Donner and his wife, super producer Lauren Shuler Donner, were present on the red carpet for the Saturn Awards last week to take some questions about popular projects they have been apart of and may be moving forward with.

The more interesting topics covered are the ones we’ll discuss here: updates on X-Men: First Class and Deadpool. The interview comes from Steve at Collider who also managed to get Donner to talk about Wonder Woman, a film she admits she’s campaigning to produce for Warner Bros.

X-Men: First Class

X-Men: First Class is the first X-Project on Fox’s plate and it’s being fast-tracked for summer release next year as a Fox tentpole feature. As we already know, casting is underway with Michael Fassbender and ...

Click to continue reading Lauren Shuler Donner Talks ‘X-Men: First Class’, Deadpool & Wonder Woman

It's being reported that an offer has been made for Robert Rodriguez to direct the Deadpool movie. Is Rodriguez the man for the job?

The upcoming solo film featuring the character of Deadpool has been in the cards for awhile now. Ryan Reynolds played the character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (one of the only saving graces of that movie) and depending on scheduling being worked out (Reynolds is currently busy with Green Lantern) he could play the character in the solo film.

It was confirmed back in January that Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick would write the Deadpool movie. So that’s the writers sorted out but what about a director? Well, an odd but not altogether shocking director is reportedly being eyed to direct Deadpool: none other than Robert Rodriguez.

Production Weekly (via The Playlist) reports – and confirms from “a source close to the project” – that Rodriguez has been offered the Deadpool director’s ...

Click to continue reading ‘Deadpool’ Offered to Robert Rodriguez?
