DVD/Blu-ray Breakdown: May 11, 2010

Last week’s home video releases were unimpressive (apart from Saving Private Ryan, one of the best Blu-rays I’ve ever seen). This week in the Breakdown we’ve got some goodies, both old and new. From parodies to a dark and gloomy Mel Gibson, there is a bit of everything.

But, as usual of late, the new releases are weak and we must rely again on Blu-ray transfers to satisfy our weekly trip to the store. In fact, the new releases totaled an 8.5 out of a possible 15 in Screen Rant reviews.

A handful of Blu-ray two-packs come out this week, including a Clive Owen thrill pack containing Inside Man and Children of Men. So if you want your discounted double feature packages, this should be a good one for you. But you won’t ...

Daybreakers Review

Short version: Despite a very interesting premise, Daybreakers fails to rise above its average script and mediocre action sequences.

Screen Rant’s Rob Frappier reviews Daybreakers

We’ve seen goth vampires stalk the night dressed in S&M-inspired leather (Blade). We’ve seen Victorian vampires roam cobblestone streets in corsets and capes (Bram Stoker’s Dracula). We’ve even seen sparkling teenage vampires brood through the halls of their high school (thanks a ton, Twilight). To my knowledge, though, we’ve never seen a movie where society is completely controlled by vampires, and therein lies the best part of Daybreakers, the new film from the sibling writer-director team of Peter and Michael Spierig.

3 New Daybreakers Clips

Just a few days after an awesome (and pretty bloody) clip appeared online from the upcoming modern-day vampire flick, Daybreakers, we have three more clips from the movie to quench your thirst (see what I did there?).

Daybreakers stars Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe and Sam Neill. It’s set in a world in the year 2019 where vampires are the majority and the remaining humans are hunted and farmed for their blood. The trouble is, the human population (and thus the blood) is dwindling fast, forcing the vampire species to work on a way to ensure their survival. At the same time, a vampire scientist (Hawke) works alongside the few remaining humans to try and save them from extinction.

Much like the last clip we posted, at least one of these new clips is pretty full-on in terms of being bloody ...

New Clips from Legion and Daybreakers

Guess what sci-fi/action/thriller fans? We’ve got a double dose of awesome for you today. That’s right, we’re bringing not one, but two clips for you to geek out over. No thanks needed, it’s our pleasure to serve.

The first clip comes from the Paul Bettany and Dennis Quaid film, Legion. If you’ll recall from our previous coverage (including the Red Band trailer we shared back in August), Legion is the story of a diner full of people who attempt to fight off an apocalyptic army of angels sent by God to destroy humanity. Among the characters is the Archangel Michael (played by Bettany), who, for some reason which I hope the film will explain, decides to ignore God’s bidding and help save humanity instead. New Daybreakers Trailer is Awesome

With the overabundance of vampire-starring or vampire-themed television shows, movies, books and more that we’ve seen surface in recent times, there are a few standouts among them that are unique, offering a fresh (or as fresh as can be) take on the genre.

One such piece of media is the upcoming Michael Spierig & Peter Spierig film, Daybreakers, which takes the perspective of our usual vampires hiding in secrecy from humans and flips it around so that vampires rule the world and the few humans left must fight for their survival while the nocturnal undead scramble to find a substitute for their most precious but limited resource: blood.

Most of our updates on this flick have come in the form of posters that we’ve shared in our weekly Screen Rant Poster Friday features over the last few months. ...

New Daybreakers PSA Reminds You to Turn in Humans

Earlier this summer, we posted a great trailer for the upcoming modern vampire tale Daybreakers. The first time I watched the trailer was in the theater before watching The Final Destination and all I could think was “Wow, I wanna watch that instead!” How can a movie go wrong with actors like Ethan Hawke (Gattaca), Sam Neil (Event Horizon) and Willem Dafoe (John Carter of Mars)? The answer – You can’t!

Set in a (obvious) future, fictional world where vampires have just about converted every human to be a stalker of the night, Daybreakers takes the unique approach of applying modern day situations and geopolitical statements to the vampires – they are slowly running out of food (read: blood) and have begun farming humans for just their blood, think The Matrix but with plasma.

Screen Rant Invades Fantastic Fest

Have you ever enjoyed a movie while having dinner and beer… at an actual movie theater? That’s the main claim to fame of Austin’s Alamo Drafthouse. But if that wasn’t enough, they’ve gone above and beyond by creating special programming that caters to the geek in all of us. Things like quote-alongs with The Big Lebowski and Office Space, outfitting an entire audience with Flint Tropics uniforms for Will Ferrell’s Semi-Pro, and tailoring their menu to match what’s on-screen. For example, right now you can enjoy root beer extract cookies while watching Mike Judge’s Extract.

Daybreakers is an upcoming vampire film with a twist – the vampires are the majority, and the humans are the ones who live in fear and are hunted. It stars Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, and Sam Neill, and today we have the Daybreakers teaser poster and full trailer for your viewing pleasure.Before we get to the poster and trailer, here is the official synopsis for Daybreakers:

In the year 2019, a plague has transformed most every human into vampires. Faced with a dwindling blood supply, the fractured dominant race plots their survival; meanwhile, a researcher works with a covert band of vamps on a way to save humankind.
