‘Dark Shadows’ Cast Image Reveals Johnny Depp’s Actual Vampiric Look

Amateur set photos should always be taken with a grain of salt – with regards to how much they reflect the quality of the finished product. We all got a nice reminder of that last week when paparazzi images of Johnny Depp on the Dark Shadows set emerged online, suggesting that his version of the vampire Barnabas Collins would be… well, perhaps a bit too Burtonesque.

A number of Screen Rant commentators suggested that perhaps the strikingly white makeup Depp had on was actually supposed to be some sort of sunscreen that would allow his blood-thirsty character to travel around in the daytime – and not be burnt to a crisp by the sunlight. Judging by the first official image released from the film… they were correct.

Johnny Depp has made a career out of playing oddball characters in Tim Burton movies like Edward Scissorhands and Alice in Wonderland, and the actor’s current collaboration with Burton is no different. As the lead in Burton’s adaptation of the cult TV series Dark Shadows, Depp plays Barnabas Collins, an accursed vampire who finds himself rudely awoken after 200 years to discover that his estate is ruined and his descendants are struggling with a range of melodramatic problems.

‘Dark Shadows’ Begins Filming; Official Synopsis Released

Johnny Depp will return to theaters in the familiar form of Captain Jack Sparrow this weekend with Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Those that prefer their Depp more on the creepy and Gothic side will have to wait until next year, which marks the arrival of his latest team effort with director Tim Burton, Dark Shadows.

Production has officially commenced on the Dark Shadows movie, which is a cinematic adaptation of the cult 1960s supernatural soap opera about vampires, werewolves, witches – and all the emotional baggage those creatures have to deal with.

‘Dark Shadows’, ‘Journey 2′, and ‘Rivals’ Snag Release Dates

Warner Bros. has announced official release dates for three rather different titles that’ll hit theaters next year: Tim Burton and Johnny Depp’s latest collaborative effort, Dark Shadows; a sequel to the surprisingly popular Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D movie, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island; and Rivals, a political comedy that will pit Will Ferrell against Zach Galifianakis.

Production is currently getting underway on Burton’s star-studded Dark Shadows, an adaptation of the cult 1960s supernatural TV soap opera that heavily influenced the artistic sensibilities of both the Gothic autuer and his favorite leading man (Depp).

Chloe Moretz Joining ‘The Hunger Games’? [Updated]

Since Jennifer Lawrence officially landed the role of Katniss Everdeen in director Gary Ross’ The Hunger Games adaptation, attention has shifted towards prospective actors in contention for the parts of significant male characters like Peeta and Gale.

However, there’s also the role of Katniss’ younger sister, Primrose (Prim for short) to consider as well. Reading between the lines of recent comments by Kick-Ass‘ Hit Girl (14-year-old actress Chloe Moretz), it’s possible that Ross may have already found his Prim.

Seth Grahame-Smith Updates ‘Dark Shadows’, ‘Vampire Hunter’ & ‘Zombies’

It’s near impossible to be a fan of supernatural horror nowadays and not know the name Seth Grahame-Smith. The author/screenwriter is scripting Tim Burton and Johnny Depp’s Dark Shadows, adapted his own novel into the Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter movie, and is actively pushing for his genre mashup, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, to make the jump to the big screen as well.

Those first two projects are already on track for release next year, but progress on the Zombies adaptation has been stop and go until now. Grahame-Smith has nonetheless provided updates on all three of the films, as they currently stand.

The last time Michelle Pfeiffer collaborated with Tim Burton, she ended up being resurrected by a pack of street cats in his gloomy sequel, Batman Returns. Now the pair may team up again for another eerie romp – an adaptation of the supernatural television series, Dark Shadows.

Eva Green In Talks For Tim Burton’s ‘Dark Shadows’

Those who were rooting for Casino Royale‘s Eva Green to become the female lead in The Dark Knight Rises (and everyone else, really) should be pleased to hear that the French actress could be gracing the big-screen again soon enough, opposite Johnny Depp in Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows adaptation.

Green is close to landing the lead female role in Burton’s Gothic undertaking, which could also feature some solid supporting talent and might begin filming this spring – assuming Burton and Depp’s schedules allow for it.

Best buds Tim Burton and Johnny Depp have been itching to work together on a new Gothic endeavor: a film treatment of the supernatural soap opera Dark Shadows. Who better to join them in their latest bit of dark whimsy than Freddy Krueger himself and an actress rumored to play a pale-skinned, black-haired young woman in a movie not featuring the Edward Scissorhands duo?

Jackie Earle Haley is reportedly in talks to join Burton’s project – one where he won’t play either a child molester and/or homicidal maniac – and Bella Heathcote is also said to be the top choice for an important role in the fantastical melodrama.

Director Tim Burton and Johnny Depp will, at long last, work together (for an eighth time, that is) on a feature-length treatment of the cult TV show Dark Shadows.

Burton and Depp are (wisely) taking a break from working together on quirkier fare like Alice in Wonderland and will be on more familiar, gothic territory with their new project – which is scheduled to start production this spring.

It’s Sunday, which means that only one more Comic-Con-less weekend is left before the big-show. Much like Thursday and Friday’s schedules, there’s more than enough options to sate even the most avid movie fans.

Saturday may be the most impressive day of the entire Con with panels for Green Lantern, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and Cowboys & Aliens – not to mention Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger. Well, here’s a pretty significant piece of news on more than one account:

An official statement has been released, revealing that Warner Bros. has signed a huge deal with IMAX to release up to 20 of their movies in that format from 2010 to 2013. And buried within this news is a detail that shakes things up a bit when it comes to the long-awaited adaptation of The Hobbit in that it’s now slated to come out a lot further down the road than we expected.

One of cinema’s great cinematic pairings is Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, who as of their latest project, the highly anticipated adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, have worked together seven times. It’s a pairing that has worked very well every single time (as far as I’m concerned).

It’s no surprise then that the duo are continuing to work together, with a feature film adaptation of ABC’s 1960s gothic soap opera, Dark Shadows, being next on their slate. This project has been rumored for a very long time, with Depp finally coming on-board (along with his company) to produce in 2007 and Burton coming onboard as director in 2008.

Every few years Hollywood has great cinematic pairings: We have had John Ford and John Wayne, Alfred Hitchcock and Cary Grant, Kurt Russell and John Carpenter, Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney and er… Adam Sandler and Frank Coraci.

However we have also been graced with the genius pairing that is Johnny Depp and Tim Burton.

Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Corpse Bride and Sweeney Todd they are Hollywood’s Gothic dream team, and they are about to hit the sound stage again with Dark Shadows – a Depp produced adaptation of the “Gothic soap opera” that ran from 1966 to 1971.
