Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: May 20th 2012

The Avengers fought-off top competition to retain its strong hold at the top of the box office. The Marvel adventure should gross an estimated $55 million worth of green over the three days, a number which gives the film an amazing $457 million total.

The Avengers is now on track to become the third highest-grossing film of all time at the US box office, and it should beat fellow comic book adventure The Dark Knight in the coming weeks (that film topped out at $533 million). The $220 million Shawarma advert probably won’t beat Titanic ($658 million) or Avatar ($760 million), but it should end its run in the company of those James Cameron films. Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: May 13th 2012

Last weekend Marvel’s The Avengers obliterated box office records and grossed an unbelievable $207 million during its first weekend. The film continued to have an incredibly successful run throughout the week and it looks like a 50% dip from last weekend will give it a mighty $103 million for the three days.

This figure again sets a new record for the highest grossing second weekend of all-time, beating the $75 million+ second week numbers for Avatar and The Dark Knight. That means that the Joss Whedon film will have grossed a staggering $373 million at the US box office and over $1 billion globally, a number achieved in an amazing nineteen days!

It seems odd, in some ways, that Tim Burton has not yet tackled the bloodthirsty world of the vampire – seeing how he is the king of quirkily macabre cinema. But Dark Shadows does indeed mark his first foray into the world of the be-fanged undead. His longtime collaborator, Johnny Depp (Edward Scissorhands, Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and so on), had been a fan of the 1966-1971 fantasy soap opera and came to Burton with a plan to adapt the series for the big screen.

Screen Rant’s Ben Kendrick reviews Dark Shadows

When moviegoers (and classic TV lovers) first heard that Tim Burton and Johnny Depp would be reuniting yet again for a “reboot” of the 1960s gothic soap opera, Dark Shadows, the response was mixed. Despite the pair of fan-favorite filmmakers, many Dark Shadows faithful protested the film for fear it would (stop me if you’ve heard this before) ruin their childhood (or, at the very least, undercut fond memories of the original show) – or rely too heavily on the, now trademark (and for some, tired) Burton/Depp schtick.

On the other hand, plenty of movie-lovers were, nonetheless, excited for the project – as it could offer a fitting “return to (gothic) form” for Burton.

Over the first four months of 2012, moviegoers have been offered a few great films and a bunch of mediocre offerings. But now, the season of summer blockbusters is set to begin with the highly-anticipated release of The Avengers. Featuring a team of superhero superstars including Iron Man, Thor and Captain America, this film is already breaking box office records.

But The Avengers isn’t the only movie to look forward to this month. May 2012 will feature the release of the long-awaited Men in Black III and the international blockbuster Battleship makes its debut in the United States (it’s already opened overseas).

There’s been a distinct split in reactions to early footage from Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows adaptation. While the majority of film geeks seem excited to check out the director’s latest serving of morbid kookiness featuring Johnny Depp, the smaller-but-loyal faction of people who remain fans of the original 1960s cult supernatural soap opera have been quite willing to express their disdain for Burton’s approach to the property.

The past month has been extremely busy for both Snow White and the Huntsman and Dark Shadows. Universal has been releasing new material for its re-imagining of the classic Grimm fairy tale left and right, while Warner Bros. has finally unveiled some footage from the new Tim Burton/Johnny Depp joint.

There’s a sliding scale of horror, with regards to the films in today’s TV spot roundup. We have Tim Burton’s latest piece of ghoulish comedy with Dark Shadows, a genuinely Gothic fairy tale re-telling with Snow White and the Huntsman – and a pure descent into sci-fi dread and physical horror with Ridley Scott’s Prometheus.

Fresh 60-second television promos have been released for Dark Shadows and Snow White, featuring new footage from the respective titles. To top it off, we also have a third television spot (with maybe a previously-unseen shot sprinkled here and there) for Scott’s first journey into the realm of science fiction in over thirty years.

‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ & ‘Dark Shadows’ TV Spots, Featurette [Update]

While Snow White and the Huntsman and Dark Shadows couldn’t be more different in some ways, they both share a vaguely similar gothic aesthetic that has been sorely missing from the cinematic landscape for far too long.

Today, we’ve got TV spots for both Snow White and Dark Shadows, and a featurette for Snow White depicting the first day of shooting.

‘Dark Shadows’ Character Posters Are Outlandishly Colorful [Updated]

One thing made perfectly clear by the trailer for Dark Shadows: this particular Tim Burton adaptation is going to be one of the filmmaker’s most ridiculous offerings of off-beat comedy, Gothic horror, and bizarre visuals in recent memory (possibly even to date).

A newly-released set of nine character posters for Burton’s adaptation of the cult 1960s soapy supernatural drama – which stars (who else) Johnny Depp – are equally vibrant in color and peculiar in style as the early footage from the actual film. In fact, if you’ve ever wondered what a bunch of kooky characters designed by Burton might look like – when featured in a series of Andy Warhol paintings – well, these banners are pretty much just that.

New ‘Dark Shadows’ TV Trailer With Alice Cooper; Screenwriter on Trailer Response

After months of having to sustain ourselves with still frames from the Dark Shadows movie, we’ve finally gotten to see some actual footage from Tim Burton and Johnny Depp’s mix of Gothic drama and camp. While most people who are unfamiliar with the original 1960s TV series seemed to enjoy the film’s overly jokey trailer, longtime Dark Shadows fans were (by and large) quite vocal about their displeasure with Burton and screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith’s approach to adapting the original show.

What appears to be a new TV promo for Dark Shadows (one identical to the first trailer, save for a new coda featuring Heavy Metal icon Alice Cooper) has since made its way online. Meanwhile, Smith has offered his thoughts on the mixed reaction to the film’s official trailer.

The original 1960s TV series Dark Shadows is a strange brew of soapy drama, supernatural mayhem, and often (unintentionally) campy style that inspired fervent devotion from viewers back in the day – and gave rise to a strong cult following over the decades since its final season aired.

‘Dark Shadows’: New Images & Tim Burton’s Conceptual Artwork

Just over two months are left until Warner Bros. releases Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows movie in theaters, and yet there’s no trailer (not even a TV spot) in sight. While that will almost undoubtedly change in the near future – assuming there’s no last-minute release date delay – in the meantime, we can offer more production stills from Burton’s adaptation of the strange Gothic 1960s soap opera, starring the filmmaker’s BFF (and bankable go-to leading man) Johnny Depp as the centuries-old vampire Barnabas Collins.

We’ll have plenty of unabashedly strange Gothic horror cinema playing in theaters this summer, culminating with the release of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. ‘Dark Shadows’ Cast Image Reveals Johnny Depp’s Actual Vampiric Look

Amateur set photos should always be taken with a grain of salt – with regards to how much they reflect the quality of the finished product. We all got a nice reminder of that last week when paparazzi images of Johnny Depp on the Dark Shadows set emerged online, suggesting that his version of the vampire Barnabas Collins would be… well, perhaps a bit too Burtonesque.

A number of Screen Rant commentators suggested that perhaps the strikingly white makeup Depp had on was actually supposed to be some sort of sunscreen that would allow his blood-thirsty character to travel around in the daytime – and not be burnt to a crisp by the sunlight. Judging by the first official image released from the film… they were correct.
