Fans of stop-motion director, producer and writer, Henry Selick (Coraline, The Nightmare Before Christmas), will be glad to hear this piece of news that was announced recently: Selick is returning to the House of the Mouse.

Selick started his animation career at Disney in the late 1970s but didn’t make his directorial debut until 1993 with Disney’s The Nightmare Before Christmas (a lot of people mistakenly think Tim Burton directed that movie). This new deal will bring Selick back to Disney, where he will both write and direct animated feature films for Disney/Pixar. Some of the features will be original material, while others will be based on literary properties.

Along with this being a good and expansive move for Pixar, it’s also a personal gain for Selick, as he will be reunited with old friends at Pixar, including studio ...

Click to continue reading ‘Coraline’ Director Henry Selick Returning To Disney

The nominees have been announced for the fourth annual Scream Awards, held every year by Spike TV. The decisively more “fan-friendly” award ceremony (compared to the Oscars) honors films from the sci-fi, fantasy, horror and comic-book genres of movies, TV shows and comic books. The awards are described as, “the first and only global event of its kind,” to honor those genres.

The Scream 2009 nominees were chosen by the Advisory Board of Hollywood and Genre Leaders, a list which this year includes the likes of Wes Craven, Roland Emmerich, Neil Gaiman, Frank Miller, Eli Roth and Zack Snyder, plus many more. The event will be taped on Saturday, October 17th this year at The Greek Theater in Los Angeles, and will air on Spike TV ten days later on Tuesday, October 27th (check for local times).

Yes, we’re a day late this week – blame it on flakey internet connections – moving on…

This week:

Brad Pitt plays Ball; Mangold looks for thrills; does Nottingham have its Marian? Mickey Rourke attaches himself to St Vincent – with an old friend.

Box Office

Audiences were really into He’s Just Not That Into You. The all-star movie featuring Ben Affleck, Jennifer Aniston and Scarlett Johansson grossed an impressive $27.5 million showing that female powered movies keep making money at the box office.

Liam Nesson’s Taken continues to impress with a slight 18% drop with a gross of $20 million.

Coraline grossed a solid $16 million showing that stop motion animation isn’t dead. The really good news is that The Pink Panther 2 crashed and burned managing a poor $12 million weekend. Considering that the first movie made $10 million more on its debut – it looks like we may have seen the last ...

Click to continue reading Movie News Wrap Up: February 8th, 2009
