Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: August 29, 2011

This week: The box office needs Help – but it isn’t Afraid of the Dark; Paul Solet sees Faces; Mary Harron isn’t Wicked or Lovely for Universal; Harris and Greengrass have The Fear Index and Source Code writer Ben Ripley’s career Flatlines.

Box Office

Hurricane Irene had an impact on the box office over the weekend, which saw a hefty drop. The Help retained the top spot and scored an additional $14.3 million. The drama has now banked over $96 million, which is pretty darn good for a movie with a $25 million budget.

Colombiana, the Luc Besson-produced action film starring Zoe Saldana, made its debut at No. 2 with $10.3 million. It’s not a bad start, especially when you think that it’s the same number that Conan had last week, and Colombiana (read our review) cost less than half the price of the Barbarian epic!

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: August 21st, 2011

This week:

The Help cleans up at the box office and moves to the top spot. Meanwhile Conan laments and the Spy Kids may have all the time in the world – but they don’t have the cash, and Fright Night‘s box office sucks; Phillip Noyce gives up the Hunt; Bill Paxton saddles up and joins Kevin Costner in The Hatfields and McCoys; great Scott – it’s The Wild Bunch and Michael Fassbender takes Prisoners.

Box Office

A slew of new entries saw disappointing results as The Help took the top spot over the weekend. The drama grossed an additional $20 million and upped its gross to almost $72 million, making it one of the biggest sleeper hits of the summer.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes dropped to second place after grossing another $16.3 million. This latest instalment of the Planet of the Apes franchise is holding very well, ...

‘Conan the Barbarian’ Screenwriter Promises ‘Unflinching’ Reboot

Robert E. Howard’s Cimmerian warrior, Conan the Barbarian was originally given the big screen treatment back in the 1980s, with Arnold Schwarzenegger playing the titular role. While the Schwarzenegger films are generally considered good campy fun (the first Conan is, at least), even their fans don’t deny they aren’t exactly loyal translations of Howard’s source material.

Yesterday marked the arrival of an official Conan the Barbarian trailer, which offered an early look at this summer’s reboot. If nothing else, the footage on display suggested the new film will adhere closer to the look and atmosphere of Conan literature, especially that of the character’s comic book incarnation.

‘Conan the Barbarian’ Trailer is an Impressive But Familiar Beast

One of the things we lamented in our 2011 Summer Movie Preview was that we hadn’t really seen any significant amount of footage from the Conan the Barbarian reboot. The Conan teaser offered a (very) brief look at Jason Momoa’s version of the titular warrior – and the war paint-clad opponents he faces in the film.

Now we have a full-length theatrical trailer that offers a glimpse at the new cinematic incarnation of Conan – as envisioned by director Marcus Nispel, the man behind the remakes of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th.

The buzz surrounding comic book superhero movies has never been greater as the summer of 2011 approaches. With four comic book movies releasing this summer and a large slate of other potential blockbusters, this slow year may explode with huge hits in the coming months.

To get you true fans pumped for another summer at the movies, we’ve put together a trailer mashup showcasing the best of what’s to come.

There are a few potential duds on the schedule this summer, but there are even more tentpoles from major studios; our mashup includes four superhero films and seven sequels. With January ending today and nothing special to show for it from the film industry or box office, we take a look forward to the rest of 2011 and pick out the 20 movies we’re most excited about seeing on the big screen.

It was not an easy task, narrowing down our choices to 20 and ordering them - Just look at our complete 2011 movie guide to see the options – but we’ve done it and are left with a healthy mix of comedies, sci-fi films, comic book movies and a lot of action that will bring the hoards to the movie theaters.

New ‘Conan’ Set Photos Display the World of the Barbarians

Bleeding Cool recently received an email containing a bunch of new set photos from the upcoming reboot of Conan, which is being directed Marcus Nispel (Friday the 13th) and stars the likes of Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Rose McGowan (Planet Terror), Rachel Nichols (G.I. Joe), Stephen Lang (Avatar) and Jason Momoa (Stargate: Atlantis) as the titular barbarian.

Although these new set photos don’t reveal too much about the look of the characters in this interpretation of the Conan legend (for those photos go HERE), we do get our first real detailed look at both the civilized and savage worlds that these barbarians will inhabit.

Stephen Lang Talks ‘Conan’ & Khalar Singh’s Awesome Weapon

Fanboys may have just hit the aging action star jackpot with The Expendables, but for my money nobody brings the action harder than 58-year-old Stephen Lang. From his portrayal of the fierce Colonel Quaritch in the mega-blockbuster Avatar to his upcoming performance as the vicious Khalar Singh in Conan, Lang can take on tough guy roles like few other actors his age.

In a recent interview with MTV, Lang talked about his character in Conan and how he got to wield a pretty awesome weapon. Lang also mentioned how he got to kick Jason Momoa’s ass “for almost two hours.”

Lang described his weapon as “very cool and difficult to master.”

Awesome New ‘Conan’ Images

Last month we got our first official look at Jason Momoa as Conan in director Marcus Nispel’s forthcoming reboot.

If that image didn’t sell any wary Conan fans about the new incarnation of the iconic barbarian, the next set of probably will. It’s looking more and more like Momoa was a great choice after-all.

The images come courtesy of the official Conan Facebook Page and showcase Momoa looking tough-as-nails on set.

The first screen shows Conan staring ahead, probably two seconds before dismembering some unlucky minion. The character looks intimidating as ever. The second images showcases Momoa’s dexterity as an actor – riding a horse, holding a giant sword, and managing to still look cool.

Stephen Lang Talks ‘Conan’ Remake

It’s been an exciting couple of years for Hollywood’s newest go-to villain, Stephen Lang.

After enjoying a featured role as bad guy Col. Miles Quaritch in James Cameron’s box-office blockbuster Avatar, Lang took on the role of Khalar Zym in Marcus Nispel’s recent reboot of the Conan film franchise.

In a recent backstage interview at the Saturn Awards, where Lang took home a Best Supporting Actor award for his role in Avatar, Collider‘s Steve ‘Frosty’ Weintraub was able to talk to the affable tough guy actor about his sudden rise in fame as well as his work on Conan.

The first official image from Marcus Nispel’s Conan remake has hit the web thanks to Nu Boyana Film Studios, the Bulgarian production company producing the film. Along with the image, Nu Boyana announced that the company had “just completed production” on the film.

Last month, we saw a handful of unofficial photos from Marcus Nispel’s Conan remake. The shaky photos of Jason Momoa as the legendary warrior led many online commentators to compare the movie to a SyFy original motion picture. Ouch. Perhaps this new official high-res image will change their minds. Check it out below.

The first spy pictures from behind-the-scenes of next year’s fantasy action film Conan have hit the net and thanks to the heads up by our friends at Collider, we’ve got them for you to look at as well. It would seem that the website Operation Kino has a spy amongst the crew on the set of the new film and he/she sent them along.

As with most behind-the-scenes photos, it’s mostly just pictures of buildings and props, with the occasional crew person or extra haplessly walking through the shot. Today however, is different because this spy managed to snag a couple of pictures of Jason Momoa dressed (or half-dressed if you will) in full Conan garb.

Fighters Turned Actors: Who Is To Blame?

A growing trend in Hollywood has set some movie lovers to DEFCON 2 and there is no sign of slowing. The blame can be spread in a number of directions, but this onslaught of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighters getting lead gigs as actors in big-budget movies is a bit disconcerting.

So far, we have yet to see any truly worthy fighters-turned-actors in these career crossovers. I’m not asking for Oscar-winning performances, but can we at least pretend like we care about our audiences? There are plenty of people out there who simply won’t go to a movie because it is starring some MMA superstar – and who knows, maybe it was a film that deserved an experienced actor in the role.

Rose McGowan Joins Conan, But What About Red Sonja?

On Tuesday, Variety reported that actress Rose McGowan would be joining the cast of Marcus Nispel’s Conan as “an evil half-human/half-witch.” McGowan’s addition rounds out a solid cast, including Jason Momoa as Conan, Ron Perlman as Conan’s father, and Stephen Lang as the villain Khalar Singh.

While McGowan’s casting is certainly good news for Nispel and crew, one of the immediate questions that came to mind was what it would mean for Robert Rodriguez’s planned remake of Red Sonja. We already knew that the film was delayed based on McGowan’s tweets, but there was hope that Sonja might make a cameo appearance in Conan. Of course, it would seem obvious that if McGowan has joined the cast of Conan, she can’t make a cameo appearance as Red Sonja in the same film.

Conan’s Father Is Ron Perlman, Not Mickey Rourke

The upcoming reboot of Conan The Barbarian continues to gain momentum with impressive casting decisions. Days after announcing Stephen Lang as the villain Khalar Singh, Vulture reports that Conan’s father, Corin, will be played by Ron Perlman.

The original buzz had Mickey Rourke fathering the Conan, getting fans of the franchise in a frenzy of anticipation. Instead, Rourke has apparently signed on to star in another epic, War of the Gods.

Either way, this seems like good news. The producers of Conan are clearly keeping the cast on a smaller scale, and while anything Mickey Rourke does is gold these days, Perlman brings a different but equally compelling level of grit to his performances. Things are really gearing up for the upcoming remake/reboot of Conan, with Stargate: Atlantis‘ Jason Mamoa already cast as the titular hero and Mickey Rourke set to play his dad. We also reported last week that MMA fighter, Bob Sapp, has been cast as Ukafa, who is one of the film’s villains.

But is one villain really enough?
