Writers like Homer and Hesiod once told stories of these characters through epic poems, but now modern audiences hear these tales in theaters. Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, Immortals, Clash of the Titans and Wrath of the Titans all draw heavily from Greek mythology – using it as the main source for their stories.

‘Wrath of the Titans’ TV Trailer is Overflowing with Mythological Warfare

The impending Wrath of the Titans may prove to be a worthy challenger for The Hunger Games, as far as the battle to top the box office goes next weekend. Its predecessor (the Clash of the Titans remake) was far from a critical smash, but it still managed to gross nearly half a billion dollars around the globe in 2010 – and, judging by early responses online, there’s very much a crowd interested in watching a second round of mortals battling Greek monsters and gods alike.

New ‘Wrath of the Titans’ Featurette and Clips

Yet another mythological monster-oriented featurette for the upcoming Wrath of the Titans has made its way online, following the Chimera-focused clip unveiled earlier this week. This time, the focus is on the demon warriors known as Makhai (also spelled Machai) – or, as co-screenwriter David Leslie Johnson calls them, “nightmare soldiers.” We also have two new clips to show from the Clash of the Titans sequel.

Most of the main players in Clash (such as Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, etc.) are back for a second round of Greek fantasy mayhem in Wrath – though, there’s been significant change-ups in off-camera personnel, including a different director in Jonathan Liebesman (Battle Los Angeles), as well as writers like Johnson (Orphan, Red Riding Hood) and relative newcomer Dan Mazeau.

‘Wrath of the Titans’ Featurette: Our Friend the Chimera

Wrath of the Titans director Jonathan Liebesman and primary story/screenplay writer Dan Mazeau hope to deliver a 3D Greek mythological adventure tale that outdoes its predecessor (the Clash of the Titans remake), if only by having an unprecedented abundance of fantastical monsters wreaking havoc on the screen.

A new behind-the-scenes clip (complete with not-yet-seen footage) has been unveiled for the Titans sequel, focusing in particular on one of the more twisted Titans featured in the film: the Chimera, a furry and fanged two-headed beast that literally provides its own fuel for creating fire. All the Greek mythology experts reading this, feel free to take this interpretation of the creature as you will.

‘Wrath of the Titans’ Images: Mortals, Monsters, & Gods

The stage is once again set for Sam Worthington as Perseus (this time, sporting a mullet) to lead humanity in battle against the Gods and their (literally) titanic monstrous foes in Wrath of the Titans. The upcoming sequel to the 2010 Clash of the Titans remake features several new faces on both sides of the camera, in the hopes of offering a mythological epic that marks a thematic improvement on its predecessor (while also matching that film’s huge box office success).

Today we have twenty high-resolution Titans images that offer a better look at Worthington’s wonky new hairdo, along with such franchise newcomers as Rosamund Pike (Pride & Prejudice) as Queen Andromeda, Toby Kebbell (Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time) as the demigod Argenor, Édgar Ramírez (Carlos) as Ares the God of War, and Bill Nighy (Underworld) as the fallen deity Hephaestus.

‘Wrath of the Titans’ International Trailer Brings on the Greek Monsters

Wrath of the Titans helmer Jonathan Liebesman (Battle Los Angeles) claims to have approached the sequel to the Clash of the Titans remake with the intention of delivering a more captivating Greek mythological epic – one with the down n’ dirty aesthetic of Gladiator - while also crafting a more compelling story than that told by its predecessor (something franchise star Sam Worthington has likewise promised in the past).

Previous trailers and TV spots for the Titans sequel have focused foremost on the film’s big selling points (set pieces, 3D effects, and action) while also making the movie look genuinely grittier in texture and overall more thrilling than that of the Titans remake. ‘Wrath of the Titans’ Trailer: Gritty Fantasy Violence & Actual Titans

When Battle: Lost Angeles director Jonathan Liebesman was brought on to helm Warner Bros.’ Wrath of the Titans, a sequel to the 2010 Clash of the Titans remake, he expressed a desire to fashion the mythological sequel as more of a truly grounded, down n’ dirty swords & sandals epic (in the vein of filmmaker Ridley Scott’s Gladiator).

Today, we have some official posters/banners and a teaser trailer for Wrath of the Titans – and while they both feature CGI creatures and bombastic action aplenty, there’s definitely a much more textural and unpolished look to this action-packed first look at the film (which even includes actual Titans).

‘Clash of the Titans 3′ Already In Development

Studio heads are all about striking while the iron is hot – hence why they often begin preliminary work on a sequel well before a new tentpole release even hits theaters. Case in point: Warner Bros. is doing just that, seeing how the studio has hired on a screenwriter for Sherlock Holmes 3… even though the second installment in that series has yet to hit theaters.

It turns out the Holmes threequel isn’t the only project Warner Bros. is getting a head start on; studio heads have also gotten the ball rolling on Clash of the Titans 3, even though the Titans sequel (Wrath of the Titans) won’t hit theaters until Spring 2012.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 waved its wand and unleashed some serious magic at the box office over the weekend. The final installment in the decade-old franchise obliterated records with its debut grossing an astonishing $168.6 million. Harry Potter (read our Deathly Hallows, Part 2 review) grossed $92 million on Friday (including midnight showings which brought in $43.5 million) giving it the largest single day gross in history.

The Last Airbender Leads 2011 Razzie Award ‘Winners’

It’s that time of year again, when the Oscars reward various filmmakers, films, and actors for their extraordinary cinematic work, and the Razzies punish various filmmakers, films, and actors for their especially horrendous cinematic work.

Last night, the 31st Annual Razzie Awards were held at Hollywood’s Barnsdall Gallery Theater. To no one’s surprise, M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender was the big “winner” (or maybe “loser” is more appropriate here) of the night, taking home the most Razzies. Alas, it wasn’t a clean sweep, as Sex and the City 2 took home several awards that Airbender was nominated for.

As we edge ever closer to the biggest movie award ceremony around, the Oscars, we have another set of nominations to mull over: The 37th Annual Saturn Awards.

While the Oscars, Golden Globes and the BAFTAs tend to recognize the more “serious” films (some would say in a way that is out of touch), award ceremonies like the Saturn Awards nominate films that average moviegoers would likely champion as their favorites of the year – not to mention the ceremony also recognizes the best TV shows and DVD release the year had to offer.

2011 Razzies Shortlist: The Worst Films and Performances of 2010

As the ball dropped in Times Square and people everywhere sang inebriated versions of “Auld Lang Syne”, it marked the end of a lukewarm movie year. With 557 movies released in 2010, some of them were truly good and others were excruciatingly bad. People could argue all day about what makes a movie truly bad, but thankfully we have the 31^st annual Golden Raspberry Awards to help us sort the chaff from the wheat.

Although the official list of nominees won’t release until January 24^th, the L.A. Times Award Tracker blog has released the shortlist of nominees for the coveted “Razzie” or Golden Raspberry Award.

Another year of movies has come and gone – and everyone is producing lists of their best and worst movies of the year. We have already unveiled what we thought were the 10 worst movies of 2010 and the top 10 movie moments of 2010 but we thought we would also do a list highlighting which movies we found to be the most disappointing.

Sam Worthington Promises ‘Wrath of the Titans’ Will Be Better

Sam Worthington, the quick-to-hit-the-Hollywood-A-list Aussie star, will be starring in his first sequel (to one of his own movies) in 2012 with Wrath of the Titans. Moviegoers were presented with some of cinema’s worst 3D post-conversion ever with the Clash of the Titans remake earlier this year and despite awful-to-medicore reviews from fans and critics, the special effects heavy film grossed nearly half a billion worldwide and hence, earned a sequel.

Clash of the Titans had it all: blockbuster production values, 3D visual FX, and a cast that included a handful of Oscar-nominees. So how can Clash of the Titans 2 (a.k.a Wrath of the Titans) possibly be an improvement on its predecessor?

The early word is that two more acclaimed talents, Javier Bardem and James Franco, may be brought onboard to star in the second battle between mortals, monsters, and bearded deities, which has already begun pre-production and could begin filming in the first half of 2011.

The 10 Scariest Giant Movie Monsters Of All Time

Movie monsters come in all shapes and sizes. While some of the smallest creatures have produced the greatest fear in humanity, there’s no questioning that the giant monsters that attack whole cities and engulf victims like Tic-Tacs are terrifying on a whole other scale (get it?). Movies have seen their fair share of the big fellas, and we’ve narrowed them down to those we think are the scariest of them all.

Certain giant movie monsters just missed the cut, but came to mind while developing our ten favorites. For instance, the Brain Bug from Starship Troopers is a massive and disgusting creature and the Graboids of Tremors are hideous creatures, but ultimately both missed our list.

2010 Scream Award Nominations

We’re now into awards season once more (time flies, doesn’t it?), with the Emmys having come and gone already. Now we have the annual 2010 Scream Awards which celebrates the more fan-friendly type of movies and TV shows that the Oscars and the Emmys might not honor. And the great thing is YOU get to vote for the winners!

Last year they honored such fan-favorites as Star Trek, Watchmen and Fringe with nominations, which I’m sure pleased many of you. Even if they still nominate some questionable movies, there’s no doubting that for the most part, the Scream Awards are a lot more in line with the majority of the movie going audience who pay to see movies purely to be entertained.
