Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant Review

Short Version: Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant is an entertaining “alternative” vampire movie that should appeal to teens – but it’s NOT for younger kids.

Screen Rant reviews Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant

I haven’t read the books this movie is based on (from what I understand, the first three books of a 12 book series – a lot to cram into one film) and I didn’t have any preconceived notions about it good or bad going in. Based on trailers and commercials I really didn’t know what to expect, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised… in most part due to John C. Reilly’s performance as Larten Crepsley, mentor to our burgeoning hero Darren Shan (played by Chris Massoglia).

Fantastic Fest Day Three: Japanese Sci-Fi Punk Rock, Russian Doctors on Drugs, and Vampirical Assistants

Fantastic Fest Day Three: Japanese Sci-Fi Punk Rock, Russian Doctors on Drugs, and Vampirical Assistants

Day Three of Fantastic Fest is over and done with, and it was a bit of a doozy. Not because of the continuing onslaught of genre films, but because by the end of the night it felt like an alien queen escaped from her hive and laid larval babies in my stomach. I’m not sure if it’s something I ate, or because I was burning the candle at both ends, but after the last screening of the day I was ready to crash. However, one of the movies I’d seen that day has stuck with me, and right now it’s a strong contender for my Best of the Fest.

‘Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant’ Trailer & Poster

The first trailer and poster for Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant have hit the Net and the trailer in particular is surprising people left and right with how good it looks.

Based on the twelve-volume young adult novels by author Darren Shan, Cirque Du Freak tells the story of a young boy (also named Darren Shan) who joins up with a circus of supernaturals under the tutelage of Larten Crepsley (John C. Reilly), a vampire who transforms Darren into a “half-vampire” to serve as his assistant.

The cast of the film features big names like Willem DaFoe, Salma Hayek, Ken Watanabe, Orlando Jones, Ray Stevenson, and 30 Rock’s Jane Krakowski. It’s helmed by Paul Weitz, director of American Pie.
