In 2007, Josh Schwartz and Chris Fedak’s geek-inspired spy series Chuck premiered on NBC and the notion of a fan-driven series was forever defined. Battling continuous intents of cancelation, as well as nasty writer’s strikes, television’s proverbial ‘little series that could’ proved that a cult show can not only be saved by its fans, but it can also evolve into something wonderful, if only given a chance.

Starting out as a series about the geek-turned-spy Chuck Bartowski (Zachary Levi), NBC’s Chuck quickly took hold of all the geek cred that it received from fans and championed on for 5 years. Friday TV Preview Round-Up: ‘Chuck,’ ‘Fringe,’ & ‘Supernatural’

This year’s seasons of Chuck, Supernatural, and Fringe – cult favorites within the “geek” community – have been a bit underwhelming compared to previous seasons. Yet all three series are still more entertaining and well-crafted than nearly all of the newest genre shows to hit the air (Once Upon a Time and Grimm, we’re looking in your direction).

Today, we have three video previews for this Friday’s respective episodes: Chuck’s “Chuck Versus the Business Trip,” Supernatural’s “How to Win Friends and Influence Monsters,” and Fringe’s “Wallflower.”

DVD/Blu-ray Breakdown: October 11th, 2011

This week is void of any significant Blu-ray re-releases, but there are some great new releases hitting shelves. Comic book fans will get a special addition to their collection when Green Lantern releases on DVD and Blu-ray this Friday. In the meantime, a pair of comedies and a Terrence Malick drama also arrive on home video.

A few low-profile titles hit DVD and Blu-ray this week, some of which some of you will be interested in. A pair of summer movies, Indian Summer and Camp Nowhere hit Blu-ray in case you have a bit of nostalgia you’re willing to invest in. Also on shelves are uber-indies like Terri and Beautiful Boy.

NBC’s spy guy Chuck is scheduled for a farewell season this fall. The show returns yet again to the San Diego Comic-Con today, and Screen Rant is here to bring you the news and antics from the actors and producers themselves.

When last we saw Chuck Bartowski, he was newly married to Sarah with the means and intention to star their own spy agency. NBC has confirmed a fifth season consisting of 13 episodes. We’ll probably see a trailer and premiere date at the panel, and plenty of lament over the fact that this season will be the last.

Comic-Con 2011: First TV Panels & Non-Returning Shows Announced

Next month, the city of San Diego will be populated by the fanatical and fantastical for Comic-Con 2011. With a complete list expected in the coming week(s), today the first set of TV panels were announced.

Coinciding with the announcements of what TV shows we will see at the ‘Con, it was also revealed that 5 previously attending series will not be returning this year.

Comic-Con staples Chuck, The Big Bang Theory, The Vampire Diaries and The Walking Dead are all slated to return. Along with these familiar series, ABC will also be bringing fan-favorite Castle back to Comic-Con for its second year. ‘Chuck’ Season 4 Finale Review & Discussion

Chuck has been teetering on the verge of cancellation since its inception way back in 2007. Yet, despite so-so ratings (to put it mildly) and the shadow of death dogging it at every turn, the super-spy-comedy hour has managed to survive for – as of last Thursday’s renewal announcement – five seasons. Pretty impressive, when you think about it.

Tonight’s season 4 finale, “Chuck Versus the Cliffhanger,” will see the titular main character join forces with arch-nemesis and the original intersect Alexei Volkoff (the awesome Timothy Dalton) against his daughter, Vivian Volkoff (Lauren Cohan of Supernatural and The Vampire Diaries fame), to save the life of Chuck’s fiance and spy partner, Sarah.

‘Chuck’ Closes In On Season 5 Renewal

Sources close to the matter claim that NBC’s spy guy Chuck will get a fifth season order any day now. This will be the third straight year the show has beaten the odds for a renewal.

The fifth season of Chuck is currently slated for 13 episodes to begin in the fall. That’s a little short for a broadcast show, and may be extended if next week’s season finale shows strong. NBC exercised a similar option in 2009.

Chuck‘s third and fourth seasons were both questionable picks for renewals, but the fanbase is a vocal one. While ratings have declined along a predictable curve for a comedy, they’ve remained steadily in the 4-5 million range for the 2010-2011 run.

Each fall, over 50 new and returning television series hit the air on network television alone. Unfortunately, the addition of new series, combined with old favorites, puts the television viewing audience in an interesting predicament.

Should viewers continue to tune into shows they’ve become accustomed to watching or replace it with a new series that might not last the season?

Because of that reoccurring rhetorical question, many shows beginning their freshman year, along with a few returning series, aren’t able to deliver respectable audience numbers. With the Chuck season 4 premiere, everyone’s favorite reluctant spy is back. Of course, after the events in the Chuck season 3 finale, nothing is going to be the same in the life of Chuck Bartowski. With Chuck’s father being killed in the finale, his world was turned upside down. That was, of course, until Chuck found out his father’s biggest secret – his mother is still alive.

As we start season 4, Chuck’s focus is solely on tracking down his mother. His mother, in this case, just happens to be played by the Terminator fighting Linda Hamilton. Comic-Con 2010 Saturday Schedule: Our TV Panel Picks

Saturday’s Comic-Con schedule has been released and while the buzz around the con that day may be about Green Lantern, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and Thor, make no mistake that TV is stepping up to the plate and bringing the thunder as well.

Some of the panels included in Saturday’s schedule are heavy-hitters Chuck, MythBusters, Sanctuary, Vampire Diaries and Community. If that’s not enough, you can hit-up panels for Warehouse 13, Eureka, Fringe, V and ABC’s new fall drama, No Ordinary Family (I’ve seen it. It’s amazing!)

There is nothing quite like watching an episode of Chuck in a convention hall with a thousand other fans. Known well for its communal endeavors to keep Chuck on the air via twitter, blog and mail campaigns – from sending boxes of Nerds to NBC executives to flooding corporate sponsor Subway’s comment card boxes with Chuck related notes – it is a vocal group. Avatar Leads 2010 Saturn Awards Nominations

Today marks the day when the nominations for the 36th Annual Saturn Awards are given out. In case you’re not familiar with them, they are given out by The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films (they also include TV shows and stage productions) so as a reader of Screen Rant I believe they’re right up your alley .

The awards will be given out on June 24th, so we have over four months to speculate and choose the nominees we’d give the award to. The categories range from the usual Best Film (separated into Fantasy, Horror, Science Fiction etc) to Best DVD release and Best DVD Special Edition.

TV Status Report: Which Shows Are In & Out

While we’re nowhere near the new fall season and most pilots have yet to be filmed, the networks are already looking at their current lineup to see where they can trim the fat. While most decisions have to be finalized, people talk, news is announced and assumptions can be made.

Some shows are no-brainers to renew (House), while others have already been canceled… and then there are the shows that sit on the fence; ones that are referred to in the industry as “being on the bubble.” Today we have an update on the status of some of those “bubble” shows.

With such a long list of shows, let’s stop with all the small-talk and get right to it. What’s the fate of your favorite show?

Christopher Llyod Joins ‘Chuck’; Finale Date Set

With Chuck consistently pulling in the ratings (unlike Heroes), they’ve decided to add a time traveling mad scientist to the team with Christopher Lloyd as he makes his way back to the network television acting scene. Lloyd will be brought in as Chuck’s therapist, when it seems that the spy business is becoming a little too stressful for Mr. Bartowski.

The news of Lloyd’s casting broke via show creator Josh Schwartz’s twitter,

While I’m sure that Christopher Lloyd’s performance will be wonderful, I’m curious whether it’ll be more serious than humorous. With such a comedic actor in the role, let’s hope they’ll cut back the seriousness a little.
