The next 'Chronicles of Narnia' film will be an adaptation of 'The Magician's Nephew' - a prequel that depicts the origins of C.S. Lewis' mythical world.

The future of The Chronicles of Narnia film franchise was called into question once again after The Voyage of the Dawn Treader suffered a rather disappointing debut at the box office – as well as a lukewarm response from audiences & critics.

Many fans speculated that if the series were to continue, bringing The Silver Chair to the big screen would be an effective way to revitalize the Narnia brand. As it turns out, a fourth film is in development – but it looks like they’re instead going the prequel route with an adaption of The Magician’s Nephew.

Originally conceived as a franchise that could potentially rival the box office might of something like The Lord of the Rings, Walt Disney Pictures ultimately ...

Click to continue reading Next Narnia Film Will Be ‘The Magician’s Nephew’ Prequel

The nominations are out for the 37th Annual Saturn Awards and they include such favorites as 'Inception,' 'Harry Potter,' 'True Grit' and 'Shutter Island.' Read the full list of nominees here.

As we edge ever closer to the biggest movie award ceremony around, the Oscars, we have another set of nominations to mull over: The 37th Annual Saturn Awards.

While the Oscars, Golden Globes and the BAFTAs tend to recognize the more “serious” films (some would say in a way that is out of touch), award ceremonies like the Saturn Awards nominate films that average moviegoers would likely champion as their favorites of the year – not to mention the ceremony also recognizes the best TV shows and DVD release the year had to offer.

Last year the Saturn Awards were dominated by a little film called Avatar (you may have heard of it), but as you’ll see below fan favorite Inception dominates things this year with a whopping nine nominations, while other popular films ...

Click to continue reading Inception Leads 2011 Saturn Award Nominees

With another holiday movie season upon us, we take a look at the best and worst films released during the Christmas movie season over the last ten years.

There are several calendar dates throughout the year where studios rush to release all their big tentpole films in an attempt to maximize on the number of people who will see them, and each date corresponds with a major U.S. holiday – Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Christmas.

Films released during Memorial Day and 4th of July usually open on the exact dates of those holidays, while films being released for the Christmas season begin showing up in theaters anywhere from ten to fifteen days before December 25th.

Some of these films are highly anticipated and draw in millions of viewers, generating obscenely large box office numbers (think Avatar), while other films only have moderate expectations. Then there are the failures – the films so bad, so ridiculously inept, ...

Click to continue reading Best & Worst Christmas Movie Releases of the Past 10 Years

This week:

The Chronicles of Narnia gets that sinking feeling, but at least the crew aren’t feeling like a Tourist; apparently Guillermo del Toro just wasn’t busy enough; Sofia Vergara and Jessica Biel set a date for New Year’s Eve; Adam Sandler and Kevin James start the ignition for Valet Guys; Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy move to The Wettest County in the World; James Franco suffers from Maladies; we approach Serial Killer Days; Mark Wahlberg is a Teddy Bear; Chris Tucker is a Rabbit and did that book just move? No the Atlas Shrugged.

The big budget fantasy film grossed a disappointing $24.5 million– much lower than Walden Media and 20th Century Fox would have liked.

New clips from this week's Chronicles of Narnia entry, 'Voyage of the Dawn Treader', and the latest Shakespearean adaptation, 'The Tempest', have emerged online.

Fantasy is the name of the game this week as both The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and The Tempest aim to transport moviegoers to an other-worldly realm full of mystical creatures, dangerous adventure, and Russell Brand prancing about in a dress.

Both of these pics officially hit theaters this Friday and coincidentally involve a sea journey affected by forces of magic – though the latest Chronicles of Narnia offers much more appeal for those uninterested in Shakespearean dialogue or director Julie Taymor’s breed of visual extravaganza.

The family-friendly fantasy flick (say that three times fast) The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader arrives in theaters next week, now under the 20th Century Fox banner.

A new clip has emerged online from the film, which hopes to attract moviegoers who adore the colorful and imaginative world of Narnia – or those looking for a distraction until they can glimpse the more monochromatic world of “The Grid” in TRON: Legacy the week after Voyage of the Dawn Treader hits theaters.

The latest Chronicles of Narnia features the return of Georgie Henley and Skandar Keynes as Lucy and Edmund Pevensie, off on yet another adventure full of dangerous beasts and magical creatures.
Check out the latest trailer for 'The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader'.

A new (and likely final) trailer for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader has hit the web. Like the international trailer that came before it, this new trailer focuses much more on the plot of the film, though in a decidedly less entertaining way.

As you’ll recall from the previous trailer, Voyage of the Dawn Treader takes place a short time after the events of the second film, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. In the movie, Lucy and Edmund (along with their annoying cousin Eustace) are transported back to Narnia, where they join with Caspian to track the Lost Lords of Narnia.

Summertime and all that easy living is now done, and unless you’re one of those people who lives where the sun is always shining then the onset of Fall means four things: colder weather, earlier sunsets, heavier clothing and movies galore.

Yes, the summer has all those big blockbusters we’ve been waiting all year to see, but Fall is the time when we actually want to be in the movie theater: when being outdoors is no longer an attractive alternative and the cinema offers many, many, award-worthy films.
Voyage of the Dawn Treader is the third film in the Chronicles of Narnia series and picks up three years after the events of The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.

The list of high-profile 3D films continues to grow as The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader as well as Gulliver’s Travels are now expected to get the 3D treatment.
Dawn Treader and Travels are both scheduled for December releases, stuffing two more 3D properties into an already bulging 3D holiday release set. Moviegoers will nearly be offered a new 3D film each week throughout November and December.

Clint Morris over at Moviehole had a chance to visit the set of The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader and while perusing the Australian country-side, sat down with effects guru, Howard Berger, to talk with him about one of his upcoming projects, the Robert Rodriquez-produced Predators.

Morris, who got started in effects working with Stan Winston on the original Predator and Aliens movies, just received photos of the finished Predator(s) from his team in Los Angeles and says that they look “fantastic” and that the fans will be happy with the look of the Predator(s).

December 10th, 2010

This will see the franchise return to its original winter release date: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe was released on December 9th, 2005 but for some reason they decided to change that up for the second film, which came out on May 16th 2008 – and made only $141 million (which was only about half what the first one made).

Is that a sign that established franchises are better released where there is no other competition? After all the same thing happened with the Harry Potter franchise – they normally were released in November each year and when they tried to change that and release a couple in ...

Click to continue reading Third Narnia Film Gets A Release Date

Budget and script issues are still being worked out between Walden and Fox but they hope for an end of summer start date for shooting and are aiming for a summer 2010 release.

This is a kind of stroke of ironic luck on Fox’s part as head of Fox 2000 (the part of Fox that will be spearheading production and development matters) had been pursuing the Narnia franchise but was beaten to it by Walden. Over the past few years they have been looking for “a family-friendly, lit-based franchise for years,” with Eragon being a disappointing financial flop for them.

It’s been revealed that Walt Disney has pulled out of co-producing and co-financing the third film in The Chronicles of Narnia franchise, subtitled The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. The reasons are unclear but were described as “budgetary and logistical.”

With the under-performance of the last film, Prince Caspian, I’m not surprised that Disney has decided to pull out. If you’re a regular Screen Rant reader this news won’t be a complete surprise. Fellow writer Jamie Williams predicted back in May that Dawn Treader was probably not going to be made.

The further they delve into these stories the more expensive they are going to be to make, and with a diminishing return this may be a good call.

People headed out in droves to see the first film The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe – which made $292 million domestically and ...

Click to continue reading Disney NOT Producing Third Narnia Film

Are Prince Caspian's box office numbers strong enough to support more sequels?

With Indiana Jones & the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull pulling in $151 million this weekend and Iron Man continuing to do solid business beyond damn-near everyone’s expectations, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (now in its second week in theatres, no less) has still not cracked $100 million. And before anyone asks, that does include the Memorial Day numbers!

Just before the summer film-season kicked off, a number of box-office forecasters were projecting Prince Caspian to pull in anywhere between $270 – $320 million. At the rate it’s going now, it’ll be lucky to get anywhere near $200 million.

You can color me suprised… to a point. Although I never saw it breaking $300 million, I expected the second Narnia outting to haul around $250 million.

But Disney’s decision to place it during summer ...

Click to continue reading Is Narnia Done?

Short version: Prince Caspian is much better than the first Narnia film.

Let’s get straight to the point: If you liked the first Chronicles of Narnia movie, you’ll like this one even better. For some reason I never wrote a review of the first one, but if I had I probably would have given it about , a full point lower than Prince Caspian.

On the other hand, if you’re a big fan of the book upon which this film is based, you’re going to be torn because it deviates heavily from that story. I wouldn’t have known that myself, but my daughter re-read the book just recently and found herself pulled in two directions regarding the movie. On its own she thought it was very good, but she was perturbed over ...

Click to continue reading Review: The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian
