Monday TV Ratings: ‘Two And A Half Men’ Smashes, ‘Playboy Club’ Crashes

Almost 28 million viewers tuned in to see the Two and a Half Men season 9 premiere, no doubt spurred by a macabre fascination at Charlie Sheen’s departure and Ashton Kutcher’s arrival. Elsewhere, NBC’s The Playboy Club did poorly in its debut.

The extremely public fight between former Two And A Half Men star Sheen and series creator Chuck Lorre has been news fodder for the last six months. Sheen was fired from the most popular comedy in the country and replaced with Ashton Kutcher. The undeniably vindictive manner in which Sheen’s character was given the boot didn’t help matters.

‘Castle’ Season 4 Premiere Photos & Description Revealed

Fans of ABC’s investigative series Castle have been biting their collective nails since the cliffhanger conclusion to Season 3. The wait is almost over, and to stir the crowd ABC has released a synopsis for the Season 4 premiere episode, “Rise.”

For those of you who missed last season’s conclusion, Detective Beckett was shot while giving a funeral speech for the late Captain Montgomery. Naturally Richard Castle picks this moment to own up to his true feelings – cut to black. Fans have been left hanging on the proverbial cliff, waiting to see if Beckett survives (no really, some of them are wondering) and what this means for the ever-so-slowly-evolving relationship.

‘Modern Family’ & ‘Hawaii Five-0′ Top DVR Ratings; ‘Supernatural’ & ‘Fringe’ Gain

Television’s busiest number-crunchers at TV by the Numbers have released their list of the most-recorded shows in America, with ABC’s Modern Family leading the pack. Shows like House, The Event and Supernatural got a significant bump in addition to first-run ratings.

Recorded episodes are making up a bigger and bigger chunk of the television audience, and the trend has been consistent for the 2010-1011 season.

For example, Modern Family scored an average of 11.2 million viewers for every live episode, plus 3.5 million DVR viewers – a whopping 31% increase.

Comic-Con 2011: First TV Panels & Non-Returning Shows Announced

Next month, the city of San Diego will be populated by the fanatical and fantastical for Comic-Con 2011. With a complete list expected in the coming week(s), today the first set of TV panels were announced.

Coinciding with the announcements of what TV shows we will see at the ‘Con, it was also revealed that 5 previously attending series will not be returning this year.

Comic-Con staples Chuck, The Big Bang Theory, The Vampire Diaries and The Walking Dead are all slated to return. Along with these familiar series, ABC will also be bringing fan-favorite Castle back to Comic-Con for its second year. Microsoft Is Bringing Live TV To Xbox 360 Owners

Announced just moments ago during the Xbox 360 E3 press conference, Microsoft is set to bring live television to millions of Xbox 360 owners around the world.

While the details are scarce, and the overall price-point and actual series availability has yet to be announced, Microsoft has revealed that ABC’s Castle will be amongst the shows available when the service eventually launches.

Proving that they’re attempting to establish a broadcasting medium that has long been hoped for, Microsoft is foregoing any typical broadcast provider and instead is working directly with the content providers to make their shows available during live broadcast.

Castle has come a long way in three seasons. Back in 2009, it was just a mid-season replacement with “that guy from Firefly.” It’s since developed into a Monday night staple with a host of fun characters that viewers have come to love.

‘Castle’ Season 3 Finale Details Revealed

Season 3 of well-read murder mystery show Castle is drawing to a close, and executive producer Andrew W. Marlowe is teasing fans with new info on the finale.

In an interview yesterday, Marlowe spoke on the various stories and arcs coming to a head in the final episodes of the season. Chief among them in the minds of fans is easily the relationship between playboy writer Castle (Nathan Fillion) and NYPD detective Beckett (Stana Katic).

But those waiting (and waiting, and waiting…) for the starring pair to couple-up will have to wait until next season – at least. Marlowe acknowledged that there’s very little stopping the characters from finally beginning an intimate relationship, but that the writers intend to throw up a roadblock:

ABC Renews Six Shows, Including ‘Modern Family’ and ‘Grey’s Anatomy’

The popular and critically-acclaimed comedy Modern Family and the long-running hospital drama Grey’s Anatomy were two of six ABC shows to receive early renewal for a new season. What other shows made the cut? Read on to find out.

Alongside Modern Family – which earned a 2010 Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series and is nominated for a 2011 Golden Globe for Best Comedy – ABC opted to renew the two other shows in its Wednesday comedy block: The Middle and Cougar Town.

On ABC’s lighthearted murder mystery series Castle, Nathan Fillion’s (Firefly, Serenity) titular author and Stana Katic’s Detective Beckett have been circling each other since the very first episode. Many fans are tired of the song and dance, but their patience may soon be rewarded.

Recently, Katic teased that the January 10th episode would bring the two characters “closer than they’ve ever gotten before.” Considering the steamy conclusion to the second season last Spring, that doesn’t leave a whole lot of room for speculation.

The universe of ABC’s weekly whodunit is about to get a lot more confusing. See if you can follow: in Castle, Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Serenity) plays a millionaire crime novelist akin to James Patterson, who follows NYPD detective Kate Beckett (played by Stana Katic) in order to get inspiration for his series of novels.

The characters of the novels mirror Castle and Beckett’s ‘real’ relationship.

TV Guide reports that Laura Prepon, best known for her role as Donna in That 70s Show, will play an actress hired for the movie role of Nikki Heat, Beckett’s literary counterpart. In addition, Prepon’s actress-character, Natalie Gray, will tail Castle and Beckett for inspiration of her own.

How’s the Jay Leno Show Faring These Days?

Despite all the hoopla and what appeared to be NBC directives of enforced support for The Jay Leno Show, and pulling scripted dramas en masse, The Jay Leno Show is not faring as well as could be expected.

NBC made a reasonable pitch, declaring how different the show would be… if you count pulling the desk off the set and rearranging the same routines as different, then fine, it’s different. Otherwise, I’m not sure what the change is. And to boot, viewers aren’t impressed.

At least it doesn’t look good from last Monday night where The Jay Leno Show pulled in 4.6 million viewers… and was bested by everything on the air except One Tree Hill on The CW, Gossip Girl, again from The CW and, well… huh. That’s it.

Dancing with the Stars, at its peak, had 18.4 million viewers ...

This 37 year old, chiseled jaw specimen of a man (my wife made me say that) has an acting career going back to 1993 with several small roles in films and shows you probably never heard of until 1998 in Saving Private Ryan. Due to technical difficulties beyond my control, the digital dog ate my homework. Or, I had to write this article twice! The digital dog just sounds more light-hearted than what the second line implies. Enough about my woes with technological gremlins.

There wasn’t a ton of news to report or snark on this week, so I had to dig up enough to make this yet another interesting read. Well, at least I think it is! I do have a few snippets that might be spoilers for The Office (Guest appearance) and Lost (Possible finale shoot notes).
