A relatively subdued Ricky Gervais took the stage as host of the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards. In his second year as host, it appears that all of last year’s controversy surrounding Gervais’ hosting must have impacted the funnyman, as all of his jabs appeared a little too nice compared to what was said last year.

For much of the evening, Michael Hazanavicius’ black-and-white silent film homage, The Artist, swept the Golden Globes in the comedy category, coming out on top overall with three wins for Best Original Score, Best Actor and Best Picture. Over on the drama side, Alexander Payne’s The Descendants took home the most awards in the drama category with a Best Actor win for George Clooney and Best Picture.

Other notable wins in the film category were Meryl ...

Click to continue reading 2012 Golden Globe Awards: Winners List

Much-ballyhooed (in a good and bad way) comedian Ricky Gervais will be back to host the Annual Golden Globes Ceremony for a third time in 2012, when the 69th annual iteration of the event takes place.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has officially announced its nominations for the 2012 Golden Globes show – and, just like any year, there are many obvious selections, a few surprises, and more than a handful of choices that are bound to rub moviegoers of all shades the wrong (or, in some cases, the right) way.

Filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius’ black-and-white silent film homage, The Artist, led the way with six Globe nods total; co-writer/helmer Alexander Payne’s The Descendants and director Tate Taylor’s The Help were close behind. That heavily-praised dramedy and popular literary adaptation (respectively) managed to snag five nominations each, putting them one ahead ...

Click to continue reading 2012 Golden Globe Nominations Announced

It is the start of a new month for DVD and Blu-ray fans. November has a few very special releases in store, but nothing on the scale of Star Wars or Jurassic Park. Still, plenty to look forward to.

The first week brings a pair of well-received studio films to DVD and Blu-ray, as Cars 2 and Crazy, Stupid, Love both reach home video formats. In addition, Water for Elephants makes its home entertainment debut.

There isn’t a title releasing this week that jumps off the page, but many will be lured in by the Blu-ray release of Hook. A Christmas Carol and Cop Land are also now available on Blu-ray.

The 3D boom continues as Disney Pixar is releasing the entire Toy Story trilogy in 3D.
Now that the 2011 Summer movie season is behind us, here's our look back at what we think were the best and most disappointing movies this year - along with a couple of very unexpected surprises.

Forget about checking your calendar – when you read that Shark Night 3D is one of the big releases of the weekend, you know the Summer Movie Season is officially coming to an end.

Overall, 2011 was a decent year as far as summer releases go. There were a handful of surprises (and more than a couple of disappointments) but most movies were good enough to ensure that people walked away entertained and with their expectations met – as opposed to, say, protesting in the streets and demanding a ticket refund.

Quibbles about whether Fast Five or Thor truly marked the start of Summer 2011 aside, the season started off with a bang at the box office – and eventually fizzled out in the end. So, here are the big questions: What ...

Click to continue reading Summer 2011 Movies: The Best, The Worst, & Some Surprises

It’s July 4th weekend and that means it’s a bonanza at the box office. The weekend saw director Michael Bay reunite with star Shia LaBeouf (but not Megan Fox, who has been replaced by Rosie Huntington-Whiteley as the non-CGI eye candy) for the third film in the mega successful franchise which is based on the Hasbro toys of yesteryear- (read Transformers: Dark of the Moon review).
Box Office

This weekend Disney Pixar’s Cars 2 took pole position at the box office, zooming ahead of the nearest competition in the form of Bad Teacher. The CGI car pic raced up an estimated $68 million to cross the finish line ahead of the original Cars’ $60 million debut. The film has received mixed reviews (read ours here) but it should be very profitable by the time it ends its run, especially once merchandising is factored in.

Emily Mortimer is a terrible driver. Her husband, actor Alessandro Nivola, banned her from driving, and in an attempt to prove it was an irrational act she borrowed a friend’s car and within one morning had three tickets and a minor accident. She is a truly terrible driver, but she makes one sleek and sexy car in Cars 2. Mortimer jokes that she will never look quite as cool as she does as the intrepid (though green) secret agent Holley Shiftwell in the film.

Screen Rant’s Ben Kendrick reviews Cars 2

It’s been five years since the original Cars film debuted in theaters – and now director John Lasseter is back (with help from co-director Brad Lewis) for a second lap with Cars 2. The original Cars film was a commercial success and an enormous franchise-building hit with younger audiences; however, reaction from non-parents was (for the most part) mixed – especially for a Pixar film. While the anthropomorphic Cars may have captivated children, in terms of story (and merchandising), the film was pretty limited – and featured some of the most one-note or least-likable Pixar characters to date.

Despite the mixed reaction from older moviegoers, there’s no doubt that Cars is one of the more popular Pixar brands when it comes to children, so it wasn’t surprising when ...

Click to continue reading ‘Cars 2′ Review

The newest Pixar animated feature, Cars 2, hits theaters this summer, which can only mean one thing: another Screen Rant trailer mashup! We’ve titled our latest creation Cars 2: Fast Five.

The characters of Cars 2 head to the body shop for a major overhaul when new voices take control of the once G-rated sequel and turn it into a PG-13 heist adventure. We’ve combined the colorful visuals of the Cars 2 trailer with the macho action movie that launched the summer season, Fast Five.

Let’s just say Finn McMissile packs a little more horsepower with Vin Diesel as the voice behind the car. So sit back and enjoy our latest trailer mashup of two potentially record-breaking blockbusters.

Like combining peanut butter and chocolate, Disney and America’s love of cars came crashing together this past summer as both worlds collided in Cars 2.

This time around the young racer Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) leaves the confines of Radiator Springs and heads out on a worldwide adventure as he competes in the World Grand Prix. The three-part race takes place in Japan, Italy and England and introduces the audience to a slew of new characters from each country.
The summer movie season is upon us yet again, and despite the somewhat lackluster theater going experiences of the last few years (with some notable exceptions, of course) 2011 promises to kick off a bright and promising future for fans of the superhero and sci-fi genres in particular.

Flicks like Thor, X-Men: First Class, Green Lantern and Captain America will keep our weekends full of excitement as we try to determine of the winner of this summer’s Superhero showdown. However, even with that whirlwind competition going on, the summer’s greatest event may in fact be the culmination of a decade-long cinematic journey with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. If you haven’t seen the first trailer for that film yet… prepare to get goosebumps.
As we prepare for the summer movie season, we've put together a fresh new trailer mashup. Get ready for Screen Rant's 'Ultimate 2011 Summer Movie Trailer.'

The buzz surrounding comic book superhero movies has never been greater as the summer of 2011 approaches. With four comic book movies releasing this summer and a large slate of other potential blockbusters, this slow year may explode with huge hits in the coming months.

To get you true fans pumped for another summer at the movies, we’ve put together a trailer mashup showcasing the best of what’s to come.

There are a few potential duds on the schedule this summer, but there are even more tentpoles from major studios; our mashup includes four superhero films and seven sequels. The major studio battle for summer supremacy seems to be between Paramount (Thor, Captain America) and Warner Bros. (Green Lantern, Harry Potter).

Hopefully this trailer gets you in the mood for this ...

Click to continue reading The Ultimate 2011 Summer Movie Trailer

[Update: We've added a new Underworld 4 pic of Kate Beckinsale!]

Today marks the beginning of a new weekly feature we are introducing here at Screen Rant – the movie image roundup! We’ve done image posts in the past, but they often only focus on two or three films at a time and usually only some of the bigger and more recognizable upcoming movies.

We’re changing that formula up by taking all the stills, concept art and behind-the-scenes photos we don’t single out during the week and consolidating them into one massive image post every Monday. These posts will have images from a multitude of genres including comedy, animation, romance, action, horror, sci-fi and drama – ensuring there is something for everyone to enjoy.
