2012 Golden Globe Awards: Winners List

A relatively subdued Ricky Gervais took the stage as host of the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards. In his second year as host, it appears that all of last year’s controversy surrounding Gervais’ hosting must have impacted the funnyman, as all of his jabs appeared a little too nice compared to what was said last year.

For much of the evening, Michael Hazanavicius’ black-and-white silent film homage, The Artist, swept the Golden Globes in the comedy category, coming out on top overall with three wins for Best Original Score, Best Actor and Best Picture. Over on the drama side, Alexander Payne’s The Descendants took home the most awards in the drama category with a Best Actor win for George Clooney and Best Picture.

Much-ballyhooed (in a good and bad way) comedian Ricky Gervais will be back to host the Annual Golden Globes Ceremony for a third time in 2012, when the 69th annual iteration of the event takes place.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has officially announced its nominations for the 2012 Golden Globes show – and, just like any year, there are many obvious selections, a few surprises, and more than a handful of choices that are bound to rub moviegoers of all shades the wrong (or, in some cases, the right) way.

Filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius’ black-and-white silent film homage, The Artist, led the way with six Globe nods total; co-writer/helmer Alexander Payne’s The Descendants and director Tate Taylor’s The Help were close behind. DVD/Blu-ray Breakdown: November 1st, 2011

It is the start of a new month for DVD and Blu-ray fans. November has a few very special releases in store, but nothing on the scale of Star Wars or Jurassic Park. Still, plenty to look forward to.

The first week brings a pair of well-received studio films to DVD and Blu-ray, as Cars 2 and Crazy, Stupid, Love both reach home video formats. In addition, Water for Elephants makes its home entertainment debut.

There isn’t a title releasing this week that jumps off the page, but many will be lured in by the Blu-ray release of Hook. A Christmas Carol and Cop Land are also now available on Blu-ray.

The 3D boom continues as Disney Pixar is releasing the entire Toy Story trilogy in 3D. A post-conversion attempt seems to be successful and those with 3D ...

Forget about checking your calendar – when you read that Shark Night 3D is one of the big releases of the weekend, you know the Summer Movie Season is officially coming to an end.

Overall, 2011 was a decent year as far as summer releases go. There were a handful of surprises (and more than a couple of disappointments) but most movies were good enough to ensure that people walked away entertained and with their expectations met – as opposed to, say, protesting in the streets and demanding a ticket refund.

Harry Potter works his magic for a record-breaking opening weekend; Jonathan Liebesman hails Caesar; catch a first look at Colin Farrell in Total Recall; Joe Carnahan’s The Grey starts a war; get ready for Bad Santa 2… and 3? Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 waved its wand and unleashed some serious magic at the box office over the weekend. The final installment in the decade-old franchise obliterated records with its debut grossing an astonishing $168.6 million. This weekend Disney Pixar’s Cars 2 took pole position at the box office, zooming ahead of the nearest competition in the form of Bad Teacher. The CGI car pic raced up an estimated $68 million to cross the finish line ahead of the original Cars’ $60 million debut. The film has received mixed reviews (read ours here) but it should be very profitable by the time it ends its run, especially once merchandising is factored in.

Emily Mortimer is a terrible driver. Her husband, actor Alessandro Nivola, banned her from driving, and in an attempt to prove it was an irrational act she borrowed a friend’s car and within one morning had three tickets and a minor accident. She is a truly terrible driver, but she makes one sleek and sexy car in Cars 2. It’s been five years since the original Cars film debuted in theaters – and now director John Lasseter is back (with help from co-director Brad Lewis) for a second lap with Cars 2. The original Cars film was a commercial success and an enormous franchise-building hit with younger audiences; however, reaction from non-parents was (for the most part) mixed – especially for a Pixar film. While the anthropomorphic Cars may have captivated children, in terms of story (and merchandising), the film was pretty limited – and featured some of the most one-note or least-likable Pixar characters to date.

‘Cars 2′ Trailer #3 Promises Lots of Colorful, Kid-Friendly Antics

Pixar will take a break from making both kids and adults cry (thank you, Up and Toy Story 3) by releasing the fast and not-so-furious sequel, Cars 2. The followup to one of the animation company’s more profitable hits once again features Owen Wilson as the voice of red-hot racing stud Lightning McQueen – and comedian Larry the Cable Guy as his lovable (red neck? red engine?) comrade, Mater.

A third and final theatrical trailer has been released for the film, which will include a whole host of new and colorful automobiles (check out our complete Cars 2 character guide) from different regions of the world.
