Back in March we found out that Syfy was looking to find more ways of extending the life of its Battlestar Galactica franchise, seemingly knowing that Caprica wouldn’t be lasting very long. Come October and it’s confirmed that the network is producing a 2-hour TV pilot for a new BSG spin-off, titled Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome. Caprica of course, was canceled two days later.

While we’ve seen little about the upcoming Battlestar TV movie – and hopeful new series – we know that it’s another prequel that takes place between the events of Caprica and BSG, this time following Bill Adama as a young ace pilot in the Colonial Fleet during the first Cylon War. We had the synopsis from the outset, but now we have our first visual ...

Click to continue reading Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome Concept Art

(11/16) Update: Rubicon and Running Wilde

Each fall, over 50 new and returning television series hit the air on network television alone. Unfortunately, the addition of new series, combined with old favorites, puts the television viewing audience in an interesting predicament.

Should viewers continue to tune into shows they’ve become accustomed to watching or replace it with a new series that might not last the season?

Because of that reoccurring rhetorical question, many shows beginning their freshman year, along with a few returning series, aren’t able to deliver respectable audience numbers. While each network has their own sliding scale regarding what exactly respectable numbers represent, the outcome is still the same. Series that are unable to garner a large enough audience for the networks (to justify their respective production budgets and time slots) are cut.
This Sunday and Monday, SyFy will be holding their annual Digital Press Tour in beautiful Orlando, Florida. During which, the network will discuss some of their new and returning series with the help of the show’s casts, hosts and executive producers. Fortunately, Screen Rant will not only be in attendance, but we’ll also be providing live coverage of the entire event.

Of the many series in SyFy’s television line-up, Caprica, Being Human, Desination Truth, Eureka, Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files, Hollywood Treasure, Sanctuary, Warehouse 13 and WWE Friday Night Smackdown will be represented.
A new day means Comic-Con is that much closer and, as promised, Friday’s schedule has been released. Much like Thursday’s schedule, it doesn’t disappoint. With over 100 panels being announced, there’s no lack of entertainment. Obviously, you may not be interested in the “Dragons Are Better Than Unicorns” panel (perhaps the best made-up panel – ever!), but I guarantee that more than one will piqué your interest.

Included in Friday’s events are panels for True Blood, Big Bang Theory and Bones. These are going to be the most sought after panels of the day. So, if you want to attend, make sure to get in line early. Of course, if you’re not one for fighting massive crowds, you’ve also got SyFy’s screenings of Eureka and Haven as well as the ...

Click to continue reading Comic-Con 2010 Friday Schedule: Our TV Panel Picks

SyFy is seeking to extend the Battlestar Galactica franchise with another spin-off. But what does that mean for 'Caprica?'

Syfy is in the middle of a big push for new programming. In addition to the superhero pilot Three Inches we covered earlier today, it appears that the cable channel is also seeking to extend the Battlestar Galactica franchise with another spin-off.

You might think talk of a spin-off Battlestar series would be the symbolic sayonara to Syfy’s Battlestar prequel series, Caprica, which has seen mostly uninspired ratings so far.

Mark Stern, SyFy’s executive vice president of development, was quick to defend Caprica:

“We have a lot of hope for that show. The (DVR data) has been very promising and growing week after week. The ratings don’t reflect the potential audience.”

Maybe so, but developing a new Battlestar property certainly does seem to indicate that a large portion of the Galactica audience never made the jump to Caprica – and ...

Click to continue reading Frak!
When Caprica premiered on the Syfy Channel, it premiered to 1.6 million sets of eyeballs. The number wasn’t as phenomenal as many would have thought that this Battlestar Galactica (BSG) prequel would have brought in. But heck, they previewed the heck out the Caprica pilot in the year prior to when it aired.

I presumed the ratings of the premiere were low due to the over-saturation of the pilot. But friends were saying how dull the show was and the ratings would seem to back that, as the 2nd episode brought in 1.4 million viewers & the 3rd episode, 1.1 million. (It was beat out by Swamp Loggers on Discovery. Ouch!)

For me, I like the show because everything that happens are precursors to the end game of BSG. That’s how I get past that damn mournful dirge of a ...

Click to continue reading Caprica on Syfy Is Floundering In The Ratings

In March of 2008 we told you about the Battlestar Galactica (BSG) prequel, Caprica, being approved. The Syfy Network then went on to pitch the prequel to the world. They released the DVD a year ahead of the television premiere date then in October of 2009 they brought it to the Woodstock and Austin Film Festivals to drum up the hype.

In April of ’09, we reviewed the 2-hour Caprica movie premiere for you right here on Screen Rant, where I felt the show kept the BSG aura and still ventured down its own path.

Watching the premiere with BSG still fresh in my mind, it was compelling. But many folks have had to wait a very long time since the series finale of BSG to get back into the world that ...

Click to continue reading Caprica Finally Premiered – What’s Next For the Series?

All we ever hear from NBC when it pitches Stargate Universe is how it beat Stargate Atlantis in some fashion. They keep trying to equate Stargate Universe ratings to something spectacular. Sure, the way they spin it, the numbers are great. But let’s take a closer look at a few items from both shows.

When Stargate Universe (SGU) premiered on October 2nd of 2009, Syfy announced its excitement about the viewer numbers. The 2-part SGU premiere produced 2.3 million viewers, which for Syfy on a Friday night, were decent numbers.

The show averaged almost 2.9 million viewers through October and Syfy noted with a press release that 2.9 million viewers was better than the last season of Stargate Atlantis. Or 36% more viewers.

The First 8 Episodes of SGU

More recently, (January 2010) Syfy was getting even more ...

Click to continue reading NBC’s Spin on Stargate Universe Ratings Falls Short

As we all know holidays can be hectic and the last thing you want to worry about is when your favorite TV show is coming back on the air. So, to make sure you’re not left in the dark (like with Fringe and the World Series), we’ve broke it down – geek style – and put together a handy list of Winter premiere and return dates.

The list is organized by network, so all you have to know is where you’ve seen your favorite shows before and you should be able to find them again pretty easily (we made it nice and alphabetical for ya!)

Happy Friday everyone!

We missed last week due to the launch of our sister site, GameRant.com and the fact that there was quite a few less one-sheets than normal so instead, I’ve combined them all from the last two weeks into this edition of Poster Friday.

Screen Rant’s wall this week now includes new one-sheets for Avatar, Precious, Crazy on the Outside, Daybreakers, Lost, Salt, Alice in Wonderland, Crazy Heart, Kick-Ass, The Yellow Handkerchief, Caprica, All About Evil, The Wolfman, Ong Bak 3, The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, From Paris with Love and Wonderful World.

In addition to that we have some neat stylistic posters for some popular television shows.

Happy Friday everyone! For our first Friday of October 2009, we’ve again gathered the latest posters to come out for this week’s poster round-up.

Screen Rant’s wall this week now includes new one-sheets for The Princess and the Frog, Caprica, The Crazies, The Mechanic, Stone, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, Saw VI, The Twilight Saga’s New Moon and Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant.

In addition to that we have two bonus posters from two major upcoming films that you need to check out! Also, there’s some very creative road sign parody posters of classic films, as well as some older and strange looking posters from Ghana.

Let’s get to it.

With Caprica due out on the Syfy Channel in early 2010, they’ve already generated interest in it by releasing screeners of the premiere episode to industry critics and selling the DVD.

Now they’re taking it a step farther and taking the Battlestar Galactica prequel to film festivals.

The film festivals they’re scheduled to appear at are the upcoming Woodstock Film Festival on October 2nd and 4th and the Austin Film Festival on October 24th

As much as I’m looking forward to the series because I was won over by the pilot, I feel this is starting to border on marketing overkill.

I have to admit that since the network has changed its name to Syfy, the advertising schema has changed a bit – they’ve gotten more aggressive and pervasive on their own and other networks.

So, when you say that a trusted industry insider told you that production on Caprica faces suspension due to script issues, you had better be ready for the storm that brews from that kind of news. According to CinemaSpy, they’ve had no reason to doubt their source.

But that report prompted Michael Hinman of Airlock Alpha to get to the bottom of the matter, and he did so with a fairly reliable source, Jane Espenson, the executive producer of Caprica.

It’s a new week and today your TV news includes a look at Fringe‘s second season; Superman will be teaming with Chuck; The Alien Nation is rising again; True Blood takes a big bit of DVD sales; Patton Oswalt talks life on Caprica; and could Supernatural rise from the grave?

Let’s get to it:

FRINGE

Got a few pics from Fringe‘s upcoming second season. The pics include The Bishops (Joshua Jackson, John Noble) and Astrid (Jasika Nicole) up to their usual hijinks in the lab, as well as guest star Meghan Markle, who will play junior FBI agent Amy Jessup – I’m guessing while Sr. Agent Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) is hanging out with Leonard Nimoy in alternate dimensions.

Today we have some info about the ongoing cast additions to Caprica, some scary character add-ons to Smallville, A little tidbit about NBC. I also point something out about that tiny little paltry convention called Comic-Con. LOL. You’ll see what I mean.

.

Caprica

First up, some interesting Caprica casting tidbits. The last two roles I saw James Marsters in was Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Smallville.

Now, we will be able to add Caprica to my list.

James Marsters will portray a terrorist named Barnabus Greeley, who is driven by moralistic and carnal focuses.

The comedian Patton Oswalt has also been added to the cast list as a guest star, playing the role of Baxter Sarno, a Caprican comedian. Sarno has a talk show that Daniel & Amanda Graystone (Eric Stoltz & Paula Malcomson) eventually appear ...

Click to continue reading TV News & Notes: Caprica, Smallville & More

[Update: It's confirmed that Bryan Singer WILL helm the Battlestar Galactica movie. See Bottom of the post.]

Drew McWeeny at HitFix has the exclusive on some very interesting developments on the Universal Pictures feature film adaptation of Battlestar Galactica.

The amazing television series brought to us by Ron Moore and David Eick gave fans new and old, a more realistic take on the classic series from the late seventies. Their show stood strong to complete its story on their own schedule, and after four full seasons, they’re now in the midst of launching the spinoff series, Caprica, that has already had its pilot released on DVD.

According to Drew, his sources have informed him that Bryan Singer (X-Men, Superman Returns, The Usual Suspects) is being brought in by Universal ...

Click to continue reading Bryan Singer to Make Battlestar Galactica Movie [Updated]

Faith Salie moderated this panel and she did well. She took control and was very proactive on the questions, getting straight to the point. Exec producers Ronald Moore & David Eick, writer Jane Espenson were present as well as Esai Morales & actor/director of Battlestar Galactica: The Plan: Edward James Olmos,

Faith noted that right here on stage was father and son, at the same time. (Morales plays Joseph Adama, the father of William Adama.)

They played a preview for The Plan and we were reminded that it’s coming out on Blu-ray and DVD on October 27th. Then we were shown a preview of Caprica which is coming out in 2010.

Caprica is set 58 years before the attack on the colonies and we watched the Adama and Graystone families ...

Click to continue reading Caprica / BSG: The Plan – San Diego Comic-Con Panel
