When last we heard about Hasbro’s Candy Land board game movie adaptation, it was being scripted by Kung Fu Panda duo Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger. The pair revealed they were fashioning the movie as an all-ages-friendly mix of action and comedy that would unfold like a Lord of the Rings-style fantasy adventure, set in a world filled with peppermint forests and fudge swamps.

However, there’s no longer any point in debating whether or not that sounds like a good idea – seeing how the “fantasy adventure” aspect of the Candy Land adaptation is being abandoned, in favor of a film that’s bigger on laughs… as co-written by and starring none other than the top dog of high-concept comedy <del datetime="2012-01-31T21:21:37+00:00">shlock</del>, Adam Sandler.

'Candyland' movie screenwriters Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger (Kung Fu Panda) liken their plans for the board game adaptation to 'Lord of the Rings' - only set in a world of candy.

Board game films are often viewed as the epitome of Hollywood laziness, simply because the “source material” generally has little to no inherent narrative (see: Ouija) and the projects are brought to life solely because of the brand recognition factor. Hence the all but universal cynicism that greeted the news about a Candyland movie being made.

Two years ago, the film version of Candyland was set to be scripted by Etan Cohen (next year’s Men in Black 3) and directed by Kevin Lima (Enchanted). Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner described the project as being a “very human” tale at the time, suggesting it would be about people entering the colorful world of a magical board game (a la Jumanji and Zathura).

Last summer I beat my body up mentally, physically and emotionally to look into the future and make some predictions of what would be Hollywood’s next latest and greatest movie idea fads. I touched on Clothing, Appliances, School Supplies and even Mundane Everyday Activities to compile a list. I guess I was painting with too broad a brush though, because I failed to see the onslaught of toys and board games that Hollywood was interested in making into a movie (read: messing up).

We’re entering a strange new world folks, one where a new set of Hollywood executives are in control, and much like me riding a mechanical bull with my shirt off, it ain’t pretty. Someone’s grandmother, mother or aunt was going through little Bobby Studio Exec’s old stuff up ...

Click to continue reading 7 Ridiculous Toy-Based Movies (That Will Probably Be Made)

Well the 2009 summer movie season is over for Hasbro and it has been financially successful. Transformers 2 has milked the entire world economy of over $800 million dollars, while G.I. Joe managed to drain the globe of $100 million this past weekend. So what does that mean for Hasbro their future releases?

Well Steve “Frosty” Weintraub over at Collider managed to catch Brian Goldner, President and C.E.O of Hasbro, before a special screening of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and got some interesting answers about a few upcoming projects: Stretch Armstrong, Candy Land, Battleship and Monopoly.

STRETCH ARMSTRONG

First up is Stretch Armstrong, the toy no one played with (seriously do you know anyone that owned one when you were a kid?).
Candyland, the iconic children’s game is coming to the big screen with even bigger behind the scenes talent. It will have an original story line, which comes as a shock amongst most of the legions of remakes being churned out in Hollywood. I guess with an original idea it’s fairly easy to get top Hollywood talent to sign on to a film – the screenplay is being written by Tropic Thunder’s Etan Cohen and directed by Kevin Lima, the brains behind the widely loved Disney film, Enchanted.

Candyland‘s executive producer and CEO of Hasbro Brian Goldner talked about his plans with MTV News:

The blurring of merchandising and film continues with Mattel aggressively pursuing bringing a “Hot Wheels” movie to the big screen. I’m sure I don’t need to explain to anyone what Hot Wheels are – those cool little metal toy cars that (at least if you’re a guy) you’ve known and loved at some point in your life.

So with brand recognition that strong, how could they NOT make a movie about them, right? RIGHT?

Oh, it’s very early in the movie-making stage for this project… so early in fact they have NO idea which direction to go. It could be Mad Max (but for kids!), or maybe The Fast and the Furious (which was for kids trapped in adult bodies). Oh, and there are other toy-based projects all itching to get started:
