Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson talks about a failed 'Doom' movie and shares a playful desire to be a part of a 'Call of Duty: Black Ops' movie.

As an editor of Screen Rant in addition to running its sister site, Game Rant, it hurts me deep down inside seeing franchise after franchise irreparably tarnished by awful and disappointing video game adaptations. One such film was Doom which debuted back in 2005 to a powerful 19% on Rotten Tomatoes, launching the career of director Andrzej Bartkowiak into one more directorial gig in the six years since: Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.

A sad story indeed, but one that certainly did not hold back Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s career, who starred as the film’s villain. Despite being part of a failed video game adaptation, The Rock would certainly not say no to doing another if the script was “good.”

Hollywood has a hard time making great video game movies & we know why: They're picking the wrong games. Here are our suggestions for some ridiculous game to movie prospects.

“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”. – Albert Einstein

Mr. Einstein could have very well been talking about Hollywood and all of the video game movies turds it has squeezed out in the past 27 years. Some people incorrectly think the wretched Super Mario Brothers kicked off the video game movie trend in 1993 but actually it started way back in 1984 with the thriller Cloak & Dagger, based off the Atari game, starring a young Henry Thomas (E.T.) and Dabney Coleman.

Regardless of which year we start from, there have been dozens of movies made from video games and, although some have come close (Mortal Kombat, Tomb Raider), NONE have actually been good. There have been some financially successful video game films but a large box office draw ...

Click to continue reading 1001 Ridiculous (but Possible) Upcoming Video Game Movies

Kevin McKidd is one of those actors who deserves some major roles and more spotlight attention. He was incredible in the way-too-short HBO series, Rome, and is excellent in all of his other work including Trainspotting, Journeyman, amongst roles in many other films.

In addition to this acting work, comic book fans may know him for being the long-rumored candidate to play Thor for a very long time back in the day and video game fans will recognize him for voicing (and providing the face) of Captain “Soap” MacTavish in what is now know as the most successfully launched video game ever: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

With the insane success (financially and critically) of the latest Activision video game and the news over the last several months ...

Click to continue reading Kevin McKidd Talks Call of Duty & Rome Movies

Back in May, news surfaced that Hollywood was interested in adapting the Call of Duty franchise to the big screen. There were no details at the time but now it is being reported that Activision, the publisher behind the video game series, has filed a trademark to protect the property against use in “pre-recorded movies featuring comedy, drama, action, adventure, music, theatrical performances and/or animation.”

With the plethora of comic book movies coming out and in development, we’re also starting to see a push into that other huge geek genre, video game movies. Unfortunately, history has not been so kind to video games based on movies and movies based on video games, but I expect a change in that trend soon.

The big question is, what would this film be about, since each game covers multiple ...

Click to continue reading Call of Duty Movie Coming Our Way?

Legendary Pictures, the studio that co-produced The Dark Knight and 300, bought the movie rights to Activision Blizzard’s World of Warcraft, the world’s leading MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game), almost 3 years ago and it has been rumored ever since that they are bringing it to the silver screen.

Call of Duty, a first person shooter also by Activision, is now also rumored to see action on the big screen as well. The only information to come from the studio and game maker regarding this and the World of Warcraft films is pure speculation, but it would seem that Hollywood is dead set on getting a video game movie right, by evidence of the two-dozen or so live-action films in the genre they shoved out the door in the past 20 years.
