The nominations are out for the 37th Annual Saturn Awards and they include such favorites as 'Inception,' 'Harry Potter,' 'True Grit' and 'Shutter Island.' Read the full list of nominees here.

As we edge ever closer to the biggest movie award ceremony around, the Oscars, we have another set of nominations to mull over: The 37th Annual Saturn Awards.

While the Oscars, Golden Globes and the BAFTAs tend to recognize the more “serious” films (some would say in a way that is out of touch), award ceremonies like the Saturn Awards nominate films that average moviegoers would likely champion as their favorites of the year – not to mention the ceremony also recognizes the best TV shows and DVD release the year had to offer.

Last year the Saturn Awards were dominated by a little film called Avatar (you may have heard of it), but as you’ll see below fan favorite Inception dominates things this year with a whopping nine nominations, while other popular films ...

Click to continue reading Inception Leads 2011 Saturn Award Nominees

This week’s DVDs and Blu-rays are thin in number, but varied in taste. No major blockbusters hit home video this week, but there is one movie and one television show that should easily make their way into collections everywhere.

Look for one of Ryan Reynolds’ most daring performances in the claustrophobic thriller Buried. Meanwhile, Timothy Olyphant starred as one of television’s best new characters, Raylan Givens, in the first season of Justified.

We’ve spent the last few days carrying on about the worst films of 2010 and the biggest disappointments in the hopes of healing our and your collective psyches from the damage sustained after watching inane movies like Jonah Hex or Furry Vengeance (*shudder*).

Now we turn our attention to the high points of 2010 – namely, the movies that met or exceeded our expectations and entertained us enough so as to earn a permanent spot on our personal favorites films list.

While a favorite movies list does not strictly correspond with a best movies list (case in point – flicks like Citizen Kane or The Seventh Seal aren’t traditionally considered proper choices for a fun Saturday night viewing), there’s certainly a good deal of crossover between the two. A number of this year’s critical ...

Click to continue reading Our Favorite Movies of 2010

Director Rodrigo Cortés and star Ryan Reynolds have delivered one of the most ambitious concept films of the year. But does ‘Buried’ get mired under the weight of those ambitions?

Screen Rant’s Ben Kendrick reviews Buried

Buried isn’t a big-budget comic book film or a 3D CGI extravaganza, but it’s still one of the most thrilling films of the year. Don’t let the simple “man in a box” concept fool you – director Rodrigo Cortés (The Contestant) utilizes a number of slick storytelling devices to portray a claustrophobic – and ultimately enjoyable – experience on film.

Despite Buried‘s upcoming wide release (on October 8th), and high-profile star (Ryan Reynolds), the movie is more indie-film than suspense thriller. The scope is extremely limited, with numerous close-ups on Reynolds’ blood-spattered face or awkward, angled shots focused on a dark corner of the pine box.

Reynolds gives a memorable performance as Paul Conroy, a U.S. Contractor working in Iraq who is kidnapped and buried alive inside a coffin as a form ...

Click to continue reading Buried Review

The international trailer for the claustrophobic thriller Buried features scenes of Ryan Reynolds trapped underground in a coffin.

Ubiquitous star Ryan Reynolds will be confined to a single location in Buried, the low-budget suspense film that arrives in theaters three weeks from today. A new international trailer for the pic has been released and it contains the first actual bit of footage that shows Reynolds in action.

Buried revolves around Paul Conroy (played by Reynolds), a U.S. contractor working overseas in Iraq. Paul is attacked and kidnapped by a group of enemy soldiers – thereafter, he awakens to find himself buried alive in a coffin, armed with nothing but a cell phone and a lighter.

Rodrigo Cortés directed the single-setting thriller, which was scripted by Chris Sparling – who will also pen one of the upcoming Night Chronicles films – and costars the ever-busy supporting man Stephen Tobolowsky. Buried was well-received at the ...

Click to continue reading ‘Buried’ International Trailer

Summertime and all that easy living is now done, and unless you’re one of those people who lives where the sun is always shining then the onset of Fall means four things: colder weather, earlier sunsets, heavier clothing and movies galore.

Yes, the summer has all those big blockbusters we’ve been waiting all year to see, but Fall is the time when we actually want to be in the movie theater: when being outdoors is no longer an attractive alternative and the cinema offers many, many, award-worthy films. A few of them even stand the chance of being pretty good.

Of course the Fall movie landscape has been changing pretty radically in the last few years: September is now a “showcase for unique genre films” instead of just a studio dumping ground ; ...

Click to continue reading Screen Rant’s 2010 Fall Movie Preview

It’s been a somewhat lackluster summer movie season – with only a few highly anticipated films living up to their hype. While box office numbers are still strong there were plenty of high-profile films that failed to impress audiences.

The somewhat disappointing summer has left an empty void in a lot of moviegoers – a void that the Fall 2010 film season is prepped to fill.

We locked Screen Rant’s Mike Eisenberg in his production office, with only week old saltine crackers and water, until he successfully produced a Fall preview trailer worthy of the bar he set with his Ultimate 2010 Summer Movie Trailer.
Once all the explosive summer blockbusters have come and gone, we can look forward to some serious and up-close-and-personal movie fare to fill the Fall and Winter (read: films that are more likely to get Oscar attention). One of those is films is Buried, an upcoming psychological thriller starring Ryan Reynolds.

In case you couldn’t surmise from the title, Buried is about a man who gets buried alive. But if you want a bit more than that to get you interested, here’s the official synopsis:

“Paul is a U.S. contractor working in Iraq. After an attack by a group of Iraqis he wakes to find he is buried alive inside a coffin. With only a lighter and a cell phone it’s a race against time to escape this claustrophobic death trap.”

Recently, new trailers have appeared online for the horror remake Piranha 3D, the adventure-thriller The Hole in 3D, and the Ryan Reynolds thriller Buried.

In the interest of making life a bit easier on our readers, we’ve combined the new trailers into one mega-post of upcoming awesomeness! Check out each trailer, as well as our commentary, below:

Piranha 3D

This remake of of the 1978 film is exactly what you’d expect: a bunch of people are terrorized by killer piranhas… in 3D. You may be asking,“Why should I go and see this?” Well, apart from a cast of veteran actors like Richard Dreyfuss, Christopher Lloyd, Jerry O’Connell, and Ving Rhames (as well as Hostel director Eli Roth), the film, while ridiculous, should provide plenty of (campy) fun.

To kick off the last week of January 2010 we have news that a couple of quite highly anticipated films around these parts have been picked up for distribution by different studios: The Robert Rodriguez directed/co-written exploitation film, Machete, has landed at 20th Century Fox and the “Ryan Reynolds in a box” thriller, Buried, has been picked up by Lionsgate. Read on for the details.

MACHETE

After a bidding war for Robert Rodriguez’ latest film, Machete, 20th Century Fox emerged the victor. Fox now has the domestic distribution rights to the film, beating out other studios like Paramount and Lionsgate (amongst others). In case you’re not familiar with the name, Machete was originally one of the faux trailers found in Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s exploitation throwback, Grindhouse. Along with Eli Roth’s trailer Thanksgiving, Machete was the only one I ...

Click to continue reading ‘Machete’ & ‘Buried’ Picked Up For Distribution

Back in July we found out that Ryan Reynolds would be doing a independent film titled Buried which would star he, himself and him, all trapped in a coffin. From what knew of the film, he would be playing a civilian contractor who awakens buried in a coffin in the middle of the desert after being kidnapped in Iraq and that the entire movie would just feature him, a true test of acting skill and something good for his resume before heading to work on the big budget comic book movies Green Lantern and Deadpool.

The indie film is directed by Rodrigo Cortés and the screenplay was written by Chris Sparling. Filming will took place entirely in Cortés’ home country of Spain and it’s set to screen at the Sundance film festival ...

Click to continue reading Buried Teaser Trailer & Scene Featuring Ryan Reynolds

Two big comic book movies I’m very much looking forward to are Green Lantern and Deadpool and it’s not because of my man-crush on Ryan Reynolds. Well, that’s part of the reason, but these movies will both be pushing the popular and fast-growing genre in new directions and both are attempting to bring an unknown character to mainstream audiences.

Deadpool has a slight advantage, having been introduced and extending off the successful X-Men franchise with his mishandled appearance in this summer’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine. While the character was completely misused, it was a blessing in disguise as it allowed Ryan Reynolds to showcase Deadpool’s alter ego Wade Wilson which earned him fan support and the greenlight for his own solo ...

Click to continue reading Ryan Reynolds Talks Deadpool & Green Lantern

Last month, Screen Rant reported that Ryan Reynolds would be spending some time working on an indie project titled, Buried. The film would star him literally buried alive in a coffin all by himself for most of the film.

The movie would certainly test Reynolds’ acting skills and would represent a something a lot different from some of the other roles we have seem him in this year.

Today, we have our first two images for the film thanks to Twitch, one behind-the-scenes with Reynolds and the director, the other of Reynolds actually in the coffin from the movie.

At the time we first heard about Buried, Reynolds described the story as a one-may show, and entire film just on him.

“‘Buried’ is the story about a guy who’s buried (laughs). It’s the only movie I’ve ever heard of with only one person in it. So it’s just me, ...

Click to continue reading First Look at Ryan Reynolds Buried

It’s a big time for comic fans who want to see their favorite characters grace the silver screen. With plenty of major comic book films debuting to widespread success in recent years, it’s no surprise that there are dozens more of these genre films in production or development as we speak.

Some major ones have made big strides in recent weeks, confirming dates and announcing casting decisions, and we expect some more of that soon with San Diego Comic-Con around the corner.

Join me as I try to make sense of a large mess of comic book movie news involving my one of my favorites, Ryan Reynolds (Plus: 2 pieces of awesome fan art!).

Several films that I’ve been following closely and expecting to make casting decisions this month and last are Thor and ...

Click to continue reading Ryan Reynolds Discussion: Deadpool, Green Lantern & More!

A week or so ago, it was announced that Canadian star Ryan Reynolds would be starring in an independent film titled Buried which follows a civilian contractor who awakens buried in a coffin in the middle of the desert after being kidnapped in Iraq.

Pretty intriguing, right?

As a few more details become available for the ambitious project, we now know that the entire film will be just Ryan Reynolds in this uncomfortable wooden box… that’s it… just him and his coffin.

Reynolds revealed the following in a Australian television interview:

“‘Buried’ is the story about a guy who’s buried (laughs). It’s the only movie I’ve ever heard of with only one person in it. So it’s just me, I’m the only person in the whole movie so, I don’t know. We’ll see. It’s either going to be, you know, the ...

Click to continue reading Ryan Reynolds Will Be ‘Buried’ All Alone
