‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Reboot Falls Into Development Limbo

When it was announced that Warner Bros. was developing a film reboot of the Buffy the Vampire franchise, the fan reception was pretty overwhelmingly hostile – not only because of the general fondness for Joss Whedon’s TV series, but also due to the writer/director’s complete lack of involvement with the reboot (he is currently busy helming The Avengers for Marvel, as it were).

However, according to a new report, progress on the Buffy revamp has been halted; in fact, for the time being, the project looks to be in danger of collapsing entirely – or, at least, not happening in the (relatively) near future.

‘Buffy’ Stars Cordelia & Spike to Guest in ‘Supernatural’ Season 7

Season 6 of Supernatural certainly had its share of low points – the “Mother of All” was more like the most disappointing villain of all – but it also had its share of extremely high points (not the least of which was the ending – as a certain character became an evil god).

Even though the season 7 premiere is more than a month away, today we have news that Buffy the Vampire Slayer & Angel regulars Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia) and James Marsters (Spike) will be guest-starring later in the season – in the episode “Shut Up, Dr. Phil.”

Fans of Joss Whedon’s hit television show Buffy the Vampire Slayer have decidedly mixed feelings about Warner Bros.’ recently announced movie reboot. While the allure of seeing the character back on the big screen is somewhat intriguing, many feel that without the input of creator Joss Whedon, the proposed film is essentially Buffy in name only.

Regardless of that pervasive skepticism, the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer continues to gain momentum. Newcomer Whit Anderson has penned a script that evidently delivers a more modern take on the mythology, but there’s not enough information available yet to determine exactly what that means. Joss Whedon Turned Down ‘Buffy’ Reboot; New Writer Speaks

Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer television series accumulated a legion of rabid fans over the course of its seven seasons. Last week, many of them were outraged to learn that Warner Bros. was moving forward with a big screen reboot of the property – and that Whedon wasn’t involved.

Despite being hard at work on The Avengers, Whedon quickly drafted an amusing (if not slightly esoteric) response to the news and expressed his frustration over how soon all of this seemed to be happening. Unfortunately, Whedon doesn’t own the rights to Buffy the Vampire Slayer – Kazui Enterprises does. He even admitted he doesn’t have any legal ground to stand on.

There have been rumblings of a Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie reboot for a couple of years now. The last time we heard, original rights holders Fran Rubel Kazui and Kaz Kazui were interested in developing a new film that would take the franchise in a “darker direction” – and they were doing it without the involvement of Buffy creator Joss Whedon.

When the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series debuted on television in 1997, it was more than a quirky cult hit – it also acted as vindication for Whedon, whose original vision for the 1992 film of the same name had been severely compromised by Kazui Enterprises. Joss Whedon To Direct An Episode of Glee

When you think Joss Whedon and musicals, it’s not with dread. His more creative and unique entertainment venues have generated some very popular products. Some examples of those, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode titled “Once More, With Feeling,” and the latest, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.

Now, Joss Whedon will be adding Glee to his dossier of credits.

Fox ordered the back 9 episodes of the season of Glee and as a big fan of the show, Joss made sure there was so scheduling conflicts when asked by the studio to direct an episode. In fact, Joss had this to say about the news:

TV News & Notes: Caprica, Smallville & More

Today we have some info about the ongoing cast additions to Caprica, some scary character add-ons to Smallville, A little tidbit about NBC. I also point something out about that tiny little paltry convention called Comic-Con. LOL. You’ll see what I mean.

Caprica

First up, some interesting Caprica casting tidbits. The last two roles I saw James Marsters in was Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Smallville.

Now, we will be able to add Caprica to my list.

James Marsters will portray a terrorist named Barnabus Greeley, who is driven by moralistic and carnal focuses.

The comedian Patton Oswalt has also been added to the cast list as a guest star, playing the role of Baxter Sarno, a Caprican comedian. Sarno has a talk show that Daniel & Amanda Graystone (Eric Stoltz & Paula Malcomson) eventually appear on.

Now that Joss Whedon has wrapped upped his work on The Cabin in the Woods, he’s starting to focus on his 2nd season of Dollhouse.

The box office has a severe Hangover; Vertigo tries to find the real Exorcist; Ed Neumeier talks RoboCop; Angelina Jolie is Wanted; Megan Fox is a Vampire Slayer and Dwayne Johnson goes Commando.

The Hangover was a holdover this week in the number 1 position. The R-rated comedy should bank another $33 million over the weekend to bring the total of the film up to $100 million after one week on release. With a sequel already in development it looks like this is a new lucrative franchise for Warner Bros – one that doesn’t involve costly special effects. Up held onto the runner-up spot with a weekend take of about $30 million showing that people just love Pixar movies.

Roy Lee and Doug Davison of Vertigo Entertainment, and the original franchise rights holders, Kuzui Enterprises (Fran Rubel Kuzui and Kaz Kuzui), of the movie Buffy The Vampire Slayer are looking to remake the popular vampire slayer movie and at the moment, it looks like they’re looking to do it without Joss Whedon.

Joss Whedon wrote the screenplay for the 1992 movie and as we all know, was brought back to helm the highly popular TV series that ran from 1997 to 2003, and also led to the 1999 spin-off, Angel.

Despite the rich history of the Buffy TV franchise, there are no plans to use some of the more popular characters from the TV series like Angel, Willow or others. They’re looking to take the franchise into a darker direction than the original and have a slayer ...
