After a decade of waiting, we finally got to see the first ever official trailer for Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day last month. For fans, this was an epic and exciting moment to say the least, pushed further by the fact that nearly the entire cast – even secondary characters – return for the sequel (minus Willem Dafoe). Today, we have the second full trailer which was just released.

Starring in All Saints Day are none other than Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus as the infamous MacManus brothers alongside their father, played by Billy Connolly as “Il Duce” the legendary killer who lives by one rule – no women or children.

Also joining the roster this time around are Julie Benz as FBI agent Eunice Bloom in a role similar to that of Willem Dafoe’s character from the first film. Other major additions to the cast include Judd Nelson, Peter Fonda and Clifton Collins Jr. Clifton joins the brothers on their quest of vengeance against evil.

That’s not all though, if you’re Boondock Saints diehard, you’ll be happy to hear that the characters of Detective Duffy (David Ferry), Detective Dolly (Brian Mahoney) and Detective “get me my bagel” Greenly (Bob Marley) are also back for the sequel. Hell, even the Irish Gun Dealer is back for the sequel paying tribute to the details of the first flick.

No more delays, here’s the second full Boondock Saints 2 trailer:

If you saw the first trailer from last month, there really isn’t that much different. There a few action shots that are new but nothing significant in terms of plot or characters – it even plays the same song, “The Saints Are Coming” by The Skids, made popular again in 2006 from the famous U2/Green Day cover that they played live for the NFL’s New Orleans Saints return home after the events of Hurricane Katrina.

What do you think of trailer and are you psyched to see a Boondock Saints sequel after so many years?

The series finally gets a theatrical release with Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day opening in the U.S. October 30, 2009.

I’m going to be honest: I came late to the party back when Boondock Saints starting to become the cult-phenomenon it is today. The original film was released in 1999, I think I saw it in 2002 and immediately my reaction was “This is what all the fuss has been about?” At first I thought it was an Irish-themed Tarantino knock-off, with one HELL of a weird performance from Willem DaFoe as a quasi-gay, self-hating police detective???

My brother (and pretty much everybody else I know) swears by Boondock Saints though, and I’ve pretty much been written off by friends and family as a fool for not liking it.

About this sequel: the trailer makes the film look like a much more polished version of Troy Duffy’s (director of Boondock Saints) vision. The returning stars (Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus) look like they haven’t lost a step (or the chemistry) after nearly a decade; the new additions to the cast (Clifton Collins Jr., Judd Nelson, Peter Fonda, Billy Connolly and Julie Benz) look like good ones; and I am so SO happy that DaFoe’s character won’t be back. I love DaFoe, but that character pretty much murdered the first film for me.

For you Boondock Saints fanatics out there: I expect some of you will like the money-polished version of one of your cult favorites, while others of you will inevitably say that Duffy and Co. “Sold out.” We’ll see who feels which way in the comments.

Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day hits theaters on October 30, 2009.

MovieWeb had a chance to speak with Collins Jr. over the phone and the quickly-hitting-it-big actor revealed that the trailer will be played at the convention when asked about the movie. He continued on to say:

“Yes sir, so get the word out, man. I know those seats are going to go fast, but get it out to the right people and it’d be dope to have the right people there. They’re cutting the trailer right now and it’s going to be ready for Comic-Con, specifically for Comic-Con.”

I’ll definitely be looking out for this when at the event.

Clifton’s character will join Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus as Connor and Murphy McManus respectively and he’ll probably help them take out some baddies. As for the rest of the cast, everyone’s returning from the first flick except for Willem Dafoe. Other newcomers include Julie Benz and Judd Nelson.

Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day is written and directed again by Troy Duffy and will likely premiere in 2010.

Well, it’s happening.

According to Hollywood Reporter, Boondock Saints 2 started filming in late October. As much as I hated the original, writer/director Troy Duffy deserves props for having the tenacity to help this project (which languished in development purgatory for years) see the light of day.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that I hope this sequel turns out to be good. Granted, I thought the original was terrible, but I always try to review every movie on its own merits. I’ve already been wrong about Troy Duffy once; he was successful in getting a sequel produced, so why rule out the possibility that the sequel could actually be good? My hope is that the sequel will be devoid of the elements that made me hate the original so much — mainly hamola acting, a script filled with clichés and a storyline that depended mostly on implausible situations.

Willem Dafoe will not be returning for the sequel, but the other original actors will. In addition, Julie Benz and Clifton Collins, Jr. (neither of whom appeared in the original) have been cast. I’m seeing at least one actor in the cast whose character died in the original, so I have to assume there is at least one flashback sequence in the sequel.

So far, I haven’t seen any official announcements regarding a release date, or whether it will have a theatrical release. Given what Troy Duffy has accomplished so far, I wouldn’t bet against him.

What do you think? Will this movie be worth seeing? Will you plan to go see it if it hits theaters?

All the main actors whose characters were alive at the end of the original are planning to return, with the notable exception of Willem Dafoe. (Apparently he’s the only sane one in the bunch.) What really fascinated me about the original was how much backlash I received for having the audacity to write a negative review of the film right here on Screen Rant a few years ago. I thought the film was terrible, and that clearly didn’t sit well with fans.

Some of the readers respectfully disagreed with me (which is perfectly okay — and appreciated), but many of the comments were insulting, inflammatory, threatening or a combination of the three. Things got so rowdy after a while that Vic (the site owner) ended up having to completely disable the comment feature for the review. I have been writing movie reviews for Screen Rant for about four years, and I have never seen a stronger reader response than I did for The Boondock Saints. What was/is the big deal? It’s just a movie; some people liked it, while others (including me) did not.

So what do you think? Did Sony do the right thing by greenlighting a sequel? Will the movie-going public still want to see a sequel, even though it has been nearly a decade since the original was released? Am I still an idiot (or worse) because I didn’t like the original? Given how chaotic and unpredictable the movie development process can be in Hollyweird, will this sequel actually see the light of day?

Short version: This movie took a half-baked idea and executed it so poorly that the end result is almost unwatchable. This is a cinematic disaster that should be avoided at all costs.

First, I should give you a little background. You may be wondering why I am reviewing a movie that was released in 1999. Well, what sparked my interest in it was the fact that there is another movie in theaters right now, called Overnight, about the rise and fall of Troy Duffy, the writer/director of The Boondock Saints. To make a long story short, Troy Duffy was a bartender in Boston who was plucked out of obscurity by being in the right place at the right time. His script for The Boondock Saints went into a bidding war and was ultimately picked up by Harvey Weinstein, the head of Miramax Studios. Duffy ended up with a sweetheart deal that landed him in the director’s chair. With expectations so high, it was not surprising that Duffy failed to live up to the hype. He ended up alienating the studio as well as his own friends, and Miramax dropped their interest in the film. A small independent studio called Franchise ended up making the film for a fraction of the budget Miramax had offered. Slaughtered by critics, the film ended up on video without ever seeing a wide release in theaters.

After hearing all the bad buzz about The Boondock Saints, I thought to myself, “The subject of the movie is intriguing. Surely it can’t be that bad.” So I watched it to see for myself. Yup, it was that bad. Actually, it was much worse than I expected. Nearly every noteworthy scene is blatantly ripped off from other (better) movies, mostly by Quentin Tarantino. As if that’s not bad enough, there are so many bad-movie clichés that this movie should be bookmarked as a definitive reference. Here are just a few examples:

FBI agents are 100 times smarter than the bumbling local cops, figure out everything (even with little or no evidence) by getting inside the killer’s head and treat everyone like crap

After a massive shootout with hundreds of bullets fired, there are no deaths and only a few minor wounds

People shot from 10 yards away die instantly, but a guy who is shot at point blank range keeps fighting

A murder investigation leads police to a strip club

Someone crawls through the building’s air ducts and falls through the ceiling into the right room

A dangerous assassin is paroled(!) just in time to do an important hit for a crime boss

…and that’s only the tip of the iceberg.

The storyline centers around Connor McManus (Sean Patrick Flanery) and his fraternal twin Murphy (Norman Reedus). They are Irishmen who live in a Boston neighborhood that is mostly controlled by the Russian mafia. Tired of being bullied, they start to form the belief that God wants them to dispose of the bad guys. Their call to action comes in the form of a sermon in which the priest talks about the indifference of good people. Not long after that, they encounter some Russians who are trying to forcefully take over a bar that they frequent. They choose to fight, and the Russians end up dead. After taking the dead Russians’ guns and money, Connor and Murphy realize that they can make a better living by disposing of bad guys than they can from the menial jobs they currently have. They end up going to the police station and telling FBI agent Paul Smecker (Willem Dafoe) that they killed the Russians in self-defense. (They leave out the part where they took the guns and money.) Smecker lets the twins go, and they receive quite a bit of public adoration for disposing of the scumbags. Before long, the twins embark on their new “career,” and more dead bodies start piling up. Almost immediately, Agent Smecker figures out who is doing the killings, and he starts to mount a case against the twins. Things are complicated by the fact that the mob retaliates against the twins by hiring an assassin (Billy Connolly) to kill them, as well as the fact that the public appreciates what the twins (by now known as “The Saints” in the press) are doing.

This is far from an original concept (ever heard of Natural Born Killers?), but the idea is at least intriguing. The problem is, I have never seen it executed well (no pun intended). I hated Natural Born Killers, and this movie certainly didn’t raise the bar on the genre. For starters, almost every role in this movie was horribly miscast. Only Carlo Rota, who plays a crime boss, does a halfway decent acting job, and even he is over the top sometimes. Norman Reedus’ Irish accent is especially troublesome, and Willem Dafoe is so over the top that he seems to be channeling Jeremy Irons from Dungeons and Dragons. Even worse is the character of “Funny Man” (David Della Rocco). In real life, he never did any acting before (or after) this movie, and it shows. His frenzied, over-the-top hamola performance sticks out like a sore thumb, and that’s really saying something considering how bad the other actors are. Note to aspiring filmmakers: If you need to cast a sleazy mob character, there are better choices than porno actor Ron Jeremy. And if you need to cast a dangerous assassin, there are better choices than comedian Billy Connolly. (Trivia alert: Another movie featuring Billy Connolly, Timeline, was also slaughtered on this site.) And finally, if you’re casting a lead role, it might be wise to think twice before you hire someone who also starred in a romantic comedy featuring a magical crab. (I only wish I were making that up.)

Without giving away any crucial details (just in case you want to see this train wreck for yourself), there were three scenes that were awful enough to deserve a special mention:

The scene where Agent Smecker is describing the “Armageddon firefight” that occurred

The scene where “Funny Man” goes along with the twins to take out some bad guys

The scene where Agent Smecker goes “undercover”

According to SlashFilm, the ostensibly long-awaited sequel has been greenlit. If only there were some “saints” who disposed of crappy movies…
