We discuss visual effects a lot here on Screen Rant – what looks good, what looks bad, etc. – and so, we thought it only fitting to let our readers know about those films that were recognized at the 2012 Visual Effects Society (VES) Awards. The annual event recognizes outstanding visual effects artistry in 23 categories of film, animation, television, commercials, special venues and video games.

With 2011 movies like Transformers 3, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Captain America, Hugo, and animated fare like Kung Fu Panda 2, Puss In Boots and Rango all sporting some impressive visual splendor, the big winners of the night were somewhat of a surprise – while others weren’t that surprising at all.

2012 Golden Globe Awards: Winners List

A relatively subdued Ricky Gervais took the stage as host of the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards. In his second year as host, it appears that all of last year’s controversy surrounding Gervais’ hosting must have impacted the funnyman, as all of his jabs appeared a little too nice compared to what was said last year.

For much of the evening, Michael Hazanavicius’ black-and-white silent film homage, The Artist, swept the Golden Globes in the comedy category, coming out on top overall with three wins for Best Original Score, Best Actor and Best Picture. Over on the drama side, Alexander Payne’s The Descendants took home the most awards in the drama category with a Best Actor win for George Clooney and Best Picture.

Much-ballyhooed (in a good and bad way) comedian Ricky Gervais will be back to host the Annual Golden Globes Ceremony for a third time in 2012, when the 69th annual iteration of the event takes place.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has officially announced its nominations for the 2012 Golden Globes show – and, just like any year, there are many obvious selections, a few surprises, and more than a handful of choices that are bound to rub moviegoers of all shades the wrong (or, in some cases, the right) way.

1921 has been a rough year for the characters of HBO’s period drama Boardwalk Empire. After ending season 1 on a bit of a high, season 2 has been something of a downward spiral for Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi) and by association, all the other factions vying for control of Atlantic City and a piece of the black market booze trade.

HBO Renews ‘Boardwalk Empire’ For Season 3

While it’s not the near-instantaneous renewal that Boardwalk Empire received after the Martin Scorsese-directed pilot premiered last year, it’s unlikely anyone is complaining. At three episodes into its second season, HBO’s pricey prohibition-era drama has snagged an early order for a third season.

Considering the show is the most prestigious drama on the HBO schedule, the news that Boardwalk Empire would march into season 3 was expected – especially after the series took home 8 Emmys, including best directing for a drama series for Scorsese. Still, with ratings somewhat down in comparison to last season, the early renewal speaks volumes about the network’s feelings toward the program.

When Jane Lynch took the stage for The 63rd Emmy Awards after a chaotic opening number, one should have known that the night will be filled with some surprising winners being announced.

After Modern Family practically swept the awards in comedy, with wins in all but two categories, it was on to reality/variety. ‘Boardwalk Empire’ Season 2 Trailer Shows Nucky’s New Enemies

HBO’s period drama Boardwalk Empire is returning in less than a month, and if the latest trailer is any indication, fans will need at least that much time to ramp up to the proper excitement level.

There’s a lot of new content since Boardwalk Empire‘s first Season 2 trailer premiered, not to mention a more interesting structure. The new trailer takes advantage of the show’s 1920s style before pumping up the drama and action. While it’s true there isn’t a whole lot of actual information translated to the viewer, there’s enough to whet the appetite of those eager for more details.

The second season of HBO’s ambitious period drama Boardwalk Empire won’t hit until the fall, but that hasn’t stopped the network from releasing a teaser to whet your appetite.

In 61 seconds, the trailer manages to get fans of the highly-rated series back in the bootlegging mood, and allow ‘Nucky’ Thompson a chance to warn all those who would conspire against his criminal empire.

At the moment, it’s admittedly hard to separate HBO from the success of its newest episodic gem – Game of Thrones; but before ‘winter’ comes, fans can sate themselves with the ongoing drama of Enoch ‘Nucky’ Thompson’s (Steve Buscemi) battle against all those looking to stake a claim for his prohibition-fueled empire.

‘Boardwalk Empire’ Casts Bugsy Siegel for Season 2

Practically a shoe-in for a second season after the Martin Scorsese-directed pilot aired on HBO last year, Boardwalk Empire is announcing the casting of more famous gangsters set to appear in the series as filming on season two nears.

One tantalizing bit of casting news is the announcement that the role of Benjamin ‘Bugsy’ Siegel has gone to Rescue Me actor, Michael Zegen.

As made apparent by the above picture, Zegen will clearly portray a much younger and less experienced Siegel than the one Warren Beatty portrayed in the 1991 Barry Levinson film Bugsy. In fact, age is the reason Zegen’s ‘Bugsy’ will go by the more familiar version of Siegel’s first name, ‘Benny,’ instead of the moniker that would eventually make him infamous – as that nickname wasn’t adopted until the late 1930s.

HBO Expands Online Video Offering with HBO GO

HBO is finally expanding its online video presence. The premium cable network announced that its HBO GO online streaming service was being updated with hundreds of new shows and movies, including nearly all of HBO’s acclaimed original series.

The HBO GO service was launched over a year ago, offering HBO cable subscribers a digital portal for streaming content like other networks have had for some time. At its opening last February, the selection of content was somewhat anemic; many users complained about missing episodes and a rotating selection of movies.

That changed this week as HBO decided to ramp up the experience. The service now features every episode of True Blood, Boardwalk Empire, The Pacific, Sex and the City, The Sopranos, The Wire, Band of Brothers… the list goes on. ...

2011 Golden Globe Award Winners

For 68 years, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has been celebrating their favorites in film and television with the Golden Globe Awards.

Once again, the multifaceted and generally hilarious Ricky Gervais will be serving as host of tonight’s gala. While those in attendance will be filled with anticipation about whether or not they will take home the award in their chosen category, viewers at home will be anxiously waiting to see how far Gervais will push the comedic envelope with his monologue and numerous ad-libs throughout the night.

With 25 separate categories having to fit within tonight’s given time slot, something tells me that Gervais will be moving things along at a swift pace – all while sipping from his iconic glass a beer that always remains not-so-hidden beneath his podium.

The Screen Actors Guild announced nominations for the 17th annual SAG Awards this morning.

The nominees reaffirmed many of the front-runners for possible Academy Award nominations.

In the leading female actor category, Natalie Portman earned a rightful nomination for her work in Black Swan, but she’ll be running against stiff competition from Nicole Kidman in Rabbit Hole, along with many other notable actresses. In the leading male actor category, Jeff Bridges was recognized for his take on the iconic character of Rooster Cogburn in True Grit, but he’ll face strong competition from young actors Jesse Eisenberg in The Social Network and James Franco in 127 Hours.

Celebrities Josh Duhamel, Katie Holmes, and Blair Underwood dragged themselves from the comfort of their beds early this morning to announce the nominations for this year’s other big cinematic awards, the Golden Globes.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has unveiled its nominations for the 68th annual Golden Globes and, like any year’s crop of nominees, there are a few surprise choices, some unexpected snubs, and a number of highly anticipated selections.

Leading the movie pack with seven nominations is the period drama The King’s Speech, which began to garner serious awards buzz back when it toured the festival circuit this past fall. AFI Lists Top 10 Movies and TV Programs of 2010

The American Film Institute announced its list of the Top 10 movies of 2010 today, giving film fans a likely glimpse at many of the movies in contention for the Best Picture Oscar at this year’s Academy Awards.

AFI’s Top 10 films represent a wide range of styles, from the brainy big budget action film Inception and the animated Toy Story 3 to the low-budget indie films Winter’s Bone and The Kids Are All Right.

Several of the films on the list, including True Grit and The Fighter, have yet to make nationwide releases, but are already racking up major points with critics. Our own Kofi Outlaw gave The Fighter a perfect five star review.

‘Boardwalk Empire’ Season 1 Finale Earns Strong Ratings

Stroll down to the speakeasy and pop open the champagne, the freshman season of Boardwalk Empire is a success!

The first season finale of HBO’s hit series had 3.3 million viewers Sunday night, and another 900,000 tuned in for the encore showing. According to HBO, each episode has averaged 10.5 million views across live, on-demand and recorded audiences. This makes Boardwalk Empire their second-most popular series behind True Blood, and the best opening season for an HBO show since Six Feet Under.

Some viewers have criticized the show’s relatively slow pace in its opening episodes (a ‘flaw’ shared by AMC’s successful Mad Men), but the show has picked up quickly in the last few episodes and delivered a satisfying conclusion.
