Speculation concerning Ridley Scott’s planned return to the world of Blade Runner heated up earlier this week, when (now debunked) new reports emerged, claiming that Harrison Ford is in talks for the film. False though it may have been, that story still calls attention to just how little concrete information has been released about the sci-fi project in general – not to mention, where it’s at, in terms of pre-production.

According to Scott, there’s a good reason for all the confusion about whether this film is going to be a prequel, a sequel, a reboot, or a spinoff that stars (or doesn’t feature) Ford as Rick Deckard. The answer is simple: not even he is sure what this Blade Runner-based feature is ultimately going to be.

Harrison Ford NOT In Talks For New ‘Blade Runner’ Movie [Updated]

Alcon Entertainment’s much-buzzed about new sci-fi project set in the Blade Runner universe – with director Ridley Scott onboard to captain the cinematic ship – has prompted a lot speculation, especially when it comes to the potential involvement (or lack thereof) of the original 1982 film’s star, Harrison Ford.

Even though Scott says the film is probably going to be a sequel of sorts, he’s also implied the project won’t be featuring any member of the original Blade Runner acting crew, including Ford. Producers Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove have echoed that statement, insisting this new movie is “a total reinvention” of the property, in terms of both narrative substance and casting.

Updates On New ‘Blade Runner’ Movie & ‘Point Break’ Remake

Alcon Entertainment head Andrew Kosove is involved with numerous upcoming high-profile remakes, TV show reboots, and new franchise installments. That list of projects includes a live-action/CGI adaptation of the Hong Kong Phooey cartoon series – and, more prominently, both another movie set in the Blade Runner universe and a revamping of the Kathryn Bigelow-directed 1991 action classic, Point Break.

Kosove has spoken out about his impending film slate and dropped some interesting tidbits about the current status of the new Blade Runner flick, as well as some insight into how much of a “pure” remake the new Point Break is going to be.

Since the (unexpected) announcement that Ridley Scott would be returning to the Blade Runner universe, there’s been a fair amount of speculation as to what exactly the new project would encompass – and whether it will be a direct sequel to Scott’s original 1982 film or a spinoff (a la Scott’s upcoming Alien semi-prequel, Prometheus).

Scott opened up recently about his Blade Runner project, dropping a few tidbits about where it is in the development process, whether the film will be set before or after the events of its predecessor, and if any of the original film’s cast or central characters would be returning.

‘Contagion’ Writer Up To Script New ‘Blade Runner’ Film

Now that Sir Ridley Scott has officially decided he will be returning to the Blade Runner universe, the next step will be to recruit a screenwriter (or two) to develop a story and script for the already highly-anticipated sci-fi project.

Oscar-nominee David Webb Peoples (Unforgiven, Twelve Monkeys) and Hampton Fancher devised the screenplay for the original Blade Runner – based on Philip K. Dick’s novel, “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” – but neither one of those writers have worked on a produced script for over a decade. So while their return would be welcomed by many a fan, it’s never been considered all that likely.

Ridley Scott’s New ‘Blade Runner’ Project Update

Yesterday the online sci-fi fan community just about exploded when news broke that Sir Ridley Scott would be helming a new movie that takes place in the Blade Runner universe.

While the project will NOT be a remake, there’s still no official yet on whether it’ll be a prequel, sequel, or be merely “related” to Scott’s original 1982 film the same way that his upcoming Prometheus is connected to Alien (essentially, a spinoff).

Alcon Entertainment heads Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove spoke to 24 Frames about the behind-closed-doors maneuvering that eventually led to Scott being brought back for another trip to the Blade Runner world of renegade replicants and futuristic metropolitan landscapes.

Ridley Scott will revisit the Alien franchise next year with Prometheus, a spinoff project that takes place in the same universe as his classic 1979 sci-fi/horror tale. It turns out that won’t be the only one of the legendary filmmaker’s famous sci-fi titles that he’ll be returning to.

Word has gotten out that Scott is now committing to direct and produce a new installment in the Blade Runner franchise, based on his acclaimed 1982 adaptation of seminal sci-fi author Philip K. Dick’s “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”

‘Blade Runner’ Producers Discuss Their Plans For The Franchise

Reactions to the recent news that Alcon Entertainment and Warner Bros. have acquired the rights to the Blade Runner franchise have been decidedly mixed. Most fans seem less than thrilled by the notion of either a sequel or a prequel to the 1982 Philip K. Dick novel adaptation, but they can at least take comfort from the news that a remake is not on the agenda.

Alcon executives Andrew Kosvoe, Broderick Johnson, and Bud Yorkin have opened up a bit about their plans to continue the Blade Runner story, including how they’ll approach future installments and who they’d like to oversee their development.

Alien may not be the only Ridley Scott science fiction film from the late 1970s/early 1980s that will be getting a new franchise installment.

Today, Warner Bros. has announced that their Alcon Entertainment subsidiary has acquired the rights to Scott’s iconic tale of the (now) not-too-distant future of 2019′s dystopian Los Angeles in Blade Runner - based on the Philip K. Dick novel, “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”

The original film, which starred Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, and Edward James Olmos, told the story of retired “Blade Runner,” Rick Deckard (Ford) who is asked to return to work – killing aka “retiring” biologically engineered humanoids, called “Replicants,” who have illegally immigrated back to Earth – instead of continuing to serve as slaves off-world.

Sure, I’ve tinkered with Photoshop in my time, but with the exception of mastering the clone stamp tool, I’ve never really had a knack for putting together cool pieces of design. Widely considered a masterpiece of modern cinema, 1982′s Blade Runner helped set the tone for a new generation of science-fiction films with its gritty noir-inspired story and its revolutionary special effects. 27 years later, the film’s director, Ridley Scott, hopes to recapture some of the film’s magic with a new web-series inspired by the movie, entitled Purefold.

The web-series, which could debut as early as this summer, is being produced by a new division of Ridley Scott’s commercial production company, RSA Films. Set two years in the future, approximately eight years before the events of Blade Runner, Purefold will serve as a sort of prequel to the original film.
