Hey suckah, if you ain’t been out to theaters to see Black Dynamite take on The Man, you need to get gone already!

It might sound like I’m joking, but Black Dynamite is a movie seriously worth watching (see our review) and it’s in theaters now, still waiting for people just like you to come along and turn it into the cult-hit it’s destined to become. But if you think you can hide from the badass kung fu brother who drives $5,000 cars and wears $100 suits, you wrong, suckah -- DEAD wrong -- because Black Dynamite will be blowing up on your TV screen in full Technocolor Blanimation (that’s 20% blacker than animation) all too soon!

After all the ra-ra we’ve done for this film I don’t know how you could possibly NOT know what it’s about, but just in case:

Actor Michael Jai White (The Dark Knight, Spawn) plays Black Dynamite, a smooth talking brother with kung fu skills unmatched in the ‘hood. When his brother is killed by drug dealers and mobsters, Black Dynamite goes on a bloody quest for vengeance that leads him from the back alleys of the ‘hood, to the island fortress of the fiendish Dr. Wu, the ranks of the CIA and even the halls of the White House itself. Anyone serving The Man’s evil agenda is fixin’ to get a blast of some Black Dynamite!

Written by Michael Jai White, Byron Minns (who narrates the trailer) and Scott Sanders (who also directs), Black Dynamite is a hilarious send-up of the Blaxploitation genre of the 70s, with White turning in a terrific performance as the titular Black Dynamite. Everything is up for spoof, from the low-budget “innovations” of Blaxploitation filmmaking, to the conventions and questionable attitudes of the genre’s greatest “heroes.” Some familiar faces -- Tommy Davidson, Arsenio Hall, Brian McKnight, Mad TV’s Nicole Sullivan and even former NBA star John Sale -- turn up to help provide the laughs in some outrageous cameos. By far the best has to be Reno 911! star Cedric Yarbrough as a pimp named “Chocolate Giddy-Up”. His signature phrase has become my new movie quote of choice.

And if you can believe it, they’re turning all that into an animated series!

That’s right, suckah! Black Dynamite is getting animatized into a cartoon that will air on The Cartoon Network (presumably its Adult Swim branch). Michael Jai White let Latino Review know the deal while on the press junket for the movie earlier this month; one of the showrunners of the popular Adult Swim series The Boondocks is reportedly involved with the project.

No word on exactly when the Black Dynamite cartoon is coming, but we can only hope that Michael Jai White will be onboard to put the boom in the voice of our Main Man. When you see the movie, make sure you pay special attention to the awesome animated sequence by Six Point Harness -- hopefully that’s exactly what this series will deliver.

Short Version: While some may view it as spoofing-by-the-numbers, Black Dynamite is still a worthy send-up of the blaxploitation genre.

Black Dynamite, directed by Scott Sanders, is a glorious mash-up spoof of 1970s grind house and blaxploitation movies.  It stars Michael Jai White, most recently seen as Gambol in The Dark Knight.

The “story” centers on Black Dynamite avenging the death of his bother, who was apparently dealing drugs. Of course the brother wasn’t really dealing dope, but was instead being framed by “The Man.” If you can’t tell yet the plot is classic blaxploitation and the semi-familiar players all admirably fill their rolls, toting names such as “Cream Corn,” “Tasty Freeze” and “Chicago Wind.”  For you fans of The Best D*mn Sports Show Period, John Salley even makes a guest appearance as a hood named “Kotex.”

The first 2/3 of Black Dynamite is ripe with all the sophomoric humor one might associate with any Judd Apatow production, which (to me) is a good thing.  For those of you who remember the movie Airplane! you will appreciate a great joke involving a boom mike. Jokes regarding the low budgets of grindhouse movies are rife throughout this film.  A particularly funny one involves the “tears” that are and then aren’t flowing in an emotional scene between Black Dynamite and Honeybee.  Everything is up for parody in this movie.

What ultimately makes this film so enjoyable is the way it takes the tropes of blaxploitation and grindhouse films from the 1970s, and somehow makes them seem fresh. Even the old caricature of the solitary hero just back from Vietnam is played for laughs, as Black Dynamite consistently refers to the wrong country, every time he suffers another flashback while on the violent search for his brother’s murderer. And it’s a quest which ascends the ladder of culprits all the way to the top.

I don’t think I’m giving away anything by revealing that the “surprise” archvillain is Tricky Dick Nixon himself (who else would it be, really?) and that the ex-Pres is surprisingly handy with a pair of nunchucks. Even the whole “diabolical plot” created by The Man – to shrink the “member” size of African American males – is a hilarious send-up of a stereotype; almost every joke has a reason for being in the film and seems to have been wittily thought out.

Before too long I knew what was going to happen in every scene of this movie (which says more about the number of B-movies I’ve seen and less with the predictability of the movie itself), but unlike repetitive and uninspired drek like Transformers 2 (and despite the fairly bizarre nature of the climax), I still laughed a lot, as did a fair portion of the audience.

If you like blaxploitation, grindhouse B-movies or just a good, funny spoof, you’ll like Black Dynamite.

When I first heard about Black Dynamite, it was by way of the film’s hilarious red-band trailer, which appeared online and became something of a cult hit in my circle. We just couldn’t stop watching the trailer and cackling out loud at a film that appeared to skewer the 70s blaxploitation genre at every opportunity. However, the red-band trailer was a little too racy for Screen Rant tastes and much to my disappointment, I was left with no choice but to post an inferior green-band version.

Well, yesterday the trade sites like Entertainment Weekly finally hopped on this stick of Black Dynamite, posting the film’s official theatrical trailer online. I could instantly tell who has been behind this film since its premiere at Sundance, and those who are coming late to the party; those in the know clearly recognized that the latest theatrical trailer is actually that same first red-band trailer, toned down to a nice, green, “approved for all audiences” version.

Fortunately, the “new” trailer is just as funny (if not more so) than the red-band trailer was. See for yourself:

Again, take a look at the red-band trailer: pretty much identical right? Just with less nudity and cursing.

America, we have a problem: there is too much smack in our orphanages. There are many names for it – big H, black tar, blue velvet, Boy, the dragon, the chick, China white, Girl, Harry Jones, Judas, King Kong, Nixon, Rambo, red chicken, schmack, schmeck, T.N.T., the beast or chiva -  but whatever you call it, it’s killing our orphans at an alarming rate.

FSITO (Fight Smack In The Orphanages) is taking to the streets on September 9, 10 and 11th to spread awareness about the smack epidemic and the orphans being affected, and they would like for you to join in the fight by signing their petition for increased smack awareness!

Founded by Gloria Grey, FSITO’s official mission statement is to:

• ESTABLISH A GRASSROOTS MOVEMENT that will supply counseling, support, nurturing, love, methadone, and understanding to our nation’s Smacked up kids.
• CREATE SMACK AWARENESS and provide Smack-related materials, including t-shirts, bumper stickers, key chains and temporary tattoos.
• STOP THE VICIOUS CYCLE of addiction by saving Smack-addicted orphans from pushers while, in turn, saving the pushers from organized crime, saving organized crime from the drug cartels and, ultimately, saving the drug cartels from big government health care reform.

500,000 signatures is the goal. Will you be a part of the cure?

FEELING FOOLED YET????

No there isn’t REALLY an organization called “FSITO” – the group and its campaign are part of the highly amusing press packet I received yesterday for Black Dynamite, the 70s blaxploitation spoof film starring (and co-written by) Michael Jai White (The Dark Knight). If you haven’t been following our coverage of this hilarious film by Scott Sanders (Thick as Thieves), you should check out the trailer and our review of the film.

Black Dynamite tells the story of an African-American kung-fu badass who takes on pushers, dealers, mobsters, ninjas and even The White House in order to wipe the stain of drugs out of his neighborhood streets (and apparently, orphanages as well). The press kit certainly did its job: I was confounded for ten minutes before I put 2+2 together to get 4. The filmmakers really didn’t leave me any kind of tip-off in the official FSITO letter, t-shirt, sticker, Smack PSA DVD and free pen syringe (see below) they sent along.

But man how I laughed when I finally did figure out the gag…

It was all in good fun – and so will Black Dynamite be when it hits theaters on October 16, 2009. Check it out (and no, you cannot have my t-shirt and certainly not my syringe pen ).

The Blaxploitation spoof Black Dynamite finally has a theatrical release date. After the film was purchased at Sundance by Sony earlier this year, fans of the hilarious trailer for the film have been wondering when it would hit theaters. I am proud to report that you won’t have to wait that long: Black Dynamite will be in theaters this October!

Apparition will reportedly be releasing the film domestically for Sony. No word yet on a wider release beyond that.

I can already hear the theme music in my head: “Dynamite! Dynamite!”

Oh yeah…

I can’t really top my own prior synopsis of what the film is all about, so I’ll go ahead and reiterate for you:

Black Dynamite tells the story of a crime-fighting, hard-loving, kung-fu master, brotha man, who goes on the warpath in order to banish crack from his community and get revenge on the mob for the murder of his brother. The movie is a spoof of the blaxploitation films of the 70’s – basically making fun of Shaft in same way that Austin Powers poked fun at James Bond.

Black Dynamite stars and was co-written by Michael Jai White (he played the live-action Spawn and Gambol in The Dark Knight). Co-star Byron Minns also co-wrote the film along with director Scott Sanders. The official release date for Black Dynamite is October 16, 2009.

I asked you before if you were ready, and now you had better be, sucka!

That’s right! My main-man Black Dynamite has gotten his feature film purchased at this year’s Sundance Film Festival! So get yourselves ready, you jive mo’fos! Cause Black Dynamite is officially coming to a theater near you!

Sony acquired Black Dynamite for $2 million after a late-night screening of the film this past Sunday. According to reports there was a pretty fervent bidding war for Black Dynamite (guess that screening went pretty well), with Sony ultimately emerging with the movie in pocket. And take note: This is Sony that acquired the picture, not Sony Pictures Classics, the branch of the studio which usually distributes small-scale, independent films. Seems that Sony is hoping Black Dynamite has franchi$e potential.

I’m not going to lie to you. I’ve been watching the teaser trailer for Black Dynamite over and over again since it dropped. Blaxploitation fan or not, it’s hard to deny that this movie looks funny as hell.

Fellow Screen Rant writer Rob Keyes was kind enough to put me on to the red band trailer for Black Dynamite, a hilarious (and raunchy) spoof of 60’s & 70’s blaxploitation films, starring Michael Jai White (Spawn) as the titular character, Black Dynamite.

He’s a Kung-Fu man of the ghetto, out to protect his neighborhood from The Man, that white fiend ultimately responsible for all the drug pushers and malt liquor purveyors who plague the ghetto. When The Man kills Black Dynamite’s brother in cold blood, things get personal and Black Dynamite goes looking for some payback, baby!

If that synopsis isn’t enough to persuade you, you’ve just gotta check out the extended trailer. BE WARNED however; it is a red-band trailer and is absolutely NOT for kids.

Black Dynamite also stars comedians Arsenio Hall and Tommy Davidson as “Tasty Freeze” and “Cream Corn.” The rest of the cast is made up of some “seen them in something” actors, and a few choice holdovers from the blaxploitation era, most notably the gruff-voiced, karate-master pimp who narrates the trailer. (Hilarious!)

You might also be happy to know that Black Dynamite has recently been accepted by the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. Expect the star on this awesome movie to rise quickly.
