It’s been awhile since we heard anything about the game-turned-potential film, BioShock – an atmospheric first person shooter, in an alternate 1960 history, centered around the underwater city of Rapture. A creepy and immersive story, where mechanical monsters called, “Big Daddies,” roam the city streets and figurehead characters spout Objectivist philosophy, Hollywood has been interested in a BioShock film adaptation for years.

However, after the departure of director Gore Verbinski, it’s become increasingly unlikely that we’ll be seeing an adaptation anytime soon – a sentiment that BioShock creator, Kevin Levine, seems to second.

The BioShock project represents another example of the growing caution that video game developers are exercising when it comes to film adaptations of their IP’s. Following on the heals of the announcement that Ubisoft wants ...

Click to continue reading ‘BioShock’ Update: Creator Says He Doesn’t ‘Need’ A Movie Adaptation

Anyone familiar with the BioShock video game franchise will tell you that title represents one of the most immersive and interesting experiences on the market. The iconic underwater city of Rapture, coupled with bizarre creature designs and supernatural abilities, have long been a source of intrigue for Hollywood executives. Unfortunately, the project has never made it past even the earliest stages of development.

However, despite the problems the film adaptation has faced (specifically budget concerns and a studio-imposed PG-13 rating), Ken Levine – Creative Director at Irrational Games (the studio in charge of the original BioShock – as well as the upcoming title BioShock: Infinite) – still believes that the BioShock brand could work on the big screen.

Director Gore Verbinksi explains that studios are not interested in financing a large-scale adaptation of BioShock with an R-Rating and that the film can't be made properly without it.

Last summer, Gore Verbinski updated us on the status of the BioShock film adaptation. At the time, they were trying to figure out a way to cut down costs of production, but still allow for the film to carry the aesthetic and scope of the popular video game it is based on.

The trouble, as we all know, is that the goal is to make the BioShock film with a well-deserved R-Rating which restricts the size of the theater-going audience and therefore, the willingness to invest from the studio side of the equation. As fans of the game know however, no film should be made based on the game unless it does have that R-Rating.

Back in July of 2010, here’s what Verbinski had to say on the matter:

Gore Verbinski provides updates on the BioShock movie, its "hard" R-rating and budgetary concerns.

From Game Rant:

Last April, Pirates of the Caribbean series director Gore Verbinski let his pal Jerry Bruckheimer know that he would be jumping ship to helm another water-based flick, the video game movie BioShock. Since that time, Verbinski moved into the producer role to let Juan Carlos Fresnadillo helm the movie while it was on hold due to financial concerns.

When talk of a BioShock film first surfaced, the initial plan was for it to release in 2010. This didn’t happen for a variety of reasons, not the least of which was budgetary concerns for the large-scale project which would also be running the risk of being a video game movie, a genre that comes attached with negative connotation.

Universal put the BioShock project on hold until they could ...

Click to continue reading BioShock Will Be An Expensive Rated-R Movie

“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”. – Albert Einstein

Mr. Einstein could have very well been talking about Hollywood and all of the video game movies turds it has squeezed out in the past 27 years. Some people incorrectly think the wretched Super Mario Brothers kicked off the video game movie trend in 1993 but actually it started way back in 1984 with the thriller Cloak & Dagger, based off the Atari game, starring a young Henry Thomas (E.T.) and Dabney Coleman.

Regardless of which year we start from, there have been dozens of movies made from video games and, although some have come close (Mortal Kombat, Tomb Raider), NONE have actually been good.
The last time we reported on the video game adaptation, Bioshock, the movie was put on hold because of (you guessed it) money troubles. Universal Pictures took a look at the $160 million dollar budget, and decided to pull the plug in the pre-production stages, letting staff go (for that time being) until they and the then-director Gore Verbinski could figure out a way to do the movie (basically) without it costing as much.

And it looks like they’ve done just that, as well as finding a replacement director for Verbinski in the form of Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, who you’ll probably know best for co-writing and directing 28 Weeks Later. He is in talks to direct from a script written by John Logan (Gladiator, The Last Samurai).

So how have Universal and Verbinski revamped their budget plan to ...

Click to continue reading Bioshock Movie May Have A New Director

Video games Like BioShock and Halo just don’t get any breaks sometimes.

These video game-based movies either make it to the big screen and we all wish they had a bigger budget or they drift in planning limbo even though there’s a rabid fanbase waiting patiently. But sometimes the fanbase just isn’t enough to inspire the studios.

Production Halted, Processes Reviewed

In this case, BioShock was on the path to being made into what many would consider to be a quality effort. Universal had acquired the rights in a multi-million dollar deal banked against gross points with the game maker and director Gore Verbinski (The Ring, Pirates Of The Caribbean series) was set to helm the job. It definitely looked promising… until Friday, April 24th, when Universal Pictures saw the estimated price tag and pulled ...

Click to continue reading BioShock Movie On Hold – What’s Verbinski To Do?

Gore Verbinski, director of all three Pirates of the Caribbean films, is ending his streak and not participating in the fourth installment. Instead, Verbinski will be focusing his efforts on the upcoming Bioshock video game adaptation.

Verbinski recently let Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer know that he will not be back to direct Pirates of the Caribbean 4.

That’s good news for everyone! Verbinski now has a chance to work on something different – another film that could spawn its own franchise – and the fans of the series get a new helmer to take the next Pirates film in a different direction (which is what it desperately needs).

In speaking with Variety, Verbinski said:
