Beavis and Butt-Head Promote ‘Extract’ Web Trailer

Today we have a new web-only trailer for the upcoming Mike Judge film, Extract. After bringing us the likes of Office Space, King of the Hill and Beavis and Butt-Head, Judge’s latest film is about a man who’s one step away from selling his flavor extract factory when a freak work accident sets in motion a series of disasters that puts his business and personal life in jeopardy.

That’s not your usual premise (I don’t think I’ve seen a movie that’s about the same thing), but it’s definitely a pretty good reason to go and see the film. On top of the new Extract trailer, we also have Judge’s classic slacker morons, Beavis and Butt-Head on hand to help promote the film.

Judge gets my money every time; Jason Bateman is pretty much always good for a laugh (it’s nice to see him leading a film); Mila Kunis is… well let’s just say she’s nice to look at; and I just love it when Ben Affleck does comedic roles (he was great in Dogma).

As for the B&B promo: It’s fun to watch the two characters promote and yet poke fun at the movie at the same time (it shows Judge has no problem with looking in the mirror, so to speak).

I’ll certainly be in line when Extract opens on September 4th (this Friday!).

Beavis and Butt-Head: The Sequel?

Mike Judge, creator of Beavis and Butt-Head and King of the Hill – and one of the most criminally underrated comedic geniuses on the planet – was recently doing press tour for his new film Extract, and was asked about the long-rumored, long-stalled, follow-up to the 1996 feature film, Beavis and Butt-Head Do America.

Judge’s talk was purely speculative, but in my case it’s nonetheless fun to hear. I was in middle school / high school during the 90s, and to me, Beavis and Butt-Head were the ushers of my adolescence.

Well before I nearly laughed myself to death watching South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, I did in fact laugh myself to death in Beavis and Butt-Head Do America and had to be resuscitated.

According to what Mike Judge told WENN, he would either like to see our two favorite slackers return to the screen as dirty old men still doing what they do best: sitting on that couch and watching the boob tube.

“I kind of think of them as being either 15 or in their 60s…I wouldn’t mind doing something with them as these two dirty old men sitting on the couch…At one point I thought Butt-Head might do ok on some really low-level sales job…Beavis might be landscaping.”

Of course in the past Judge has also mentioned a (fleeting?) desire to do a live-action B&B, with the likes of Sean William Scott and Johnny Depp taking on the roles… Never can tell when that Mike Judge is trying to be funny.

Seriously though, let’s just toss out the live-action angle for a moment and focus on this second animated film. I say BY ALL MEANS NECESSARY THIS SHOULD HAPPEN. I love Mike Judge’s work and think it’s a CRIME that the man hasn’t earned more recognition for his consistently quality shows and films (he wrote and directed Office Space, people!). And since I don’t see a King of the Hill feature film ever getting made (though it probably should), and people don’t really seem to support Judge’s live-action films in the theater (see: Idiocracy), then if the only way the man can get a shot at another big box office payday is Beavis and Butt-Head, why not take the opportunity?

I am on the fence about how to do it, though. Judge’s idea about a middle-aged B&B film sounds like it could definitely be good material (especially if it’s a generational satire about gen x rockers living in a hipster/emo world), but if the primary audience is going to be 20-30 somethings that grew up on the original B&B MTV series from the 90s, then a simple film featuring our favorite slackers on another one of their hair-brained adventures would do just fine.

Either way, the next Beavis and Butt-Head film would certainly face the daunting task of addressing the current state and social practices of music video viewing. Not an easy task.

Right now this B&B film is just talk, but here’s hoping something develops.

Will We See A Live-Action Beavis and Butt-Head Movie?

Eh-heh… heh…

Butt-head: “This bowling ball isn’t human! It doesn’t feel pain! It can’t be reasoned with!”

After the “Frog Baseball” short that helped spark the show, Beavis and Butt-head, went on to last from 1993 to 1997 on MTV and accumulated quite the following.

In a recent article over on MTV.com, Mike Judge, creator of Beavis and Butt-head says he is THINKING about the idea of a live action movie version of the totally cool, slow to spark pair of America’s favorite teens in wasting.

Judge has brought us King of the Hill on Fox, (which I sometimes wonder if this wasn’t Judge’s idea of Butt-head all grown up and off of caffeine). In addition, he’s brought us the flick Office Space, the biting social satire Ideocracy (which was unfortunately a box office flop) and once he’s done with his most recent project, the comedy Extract, he says he might turn his attention back to the two that got it all going for him, but in a live action film.

The idea might have been sparked by a conversation he had with Johnny Depp some years ago who said he’d love to play Beavis.

Judge made note that:

“I haven’t yet said, ‘OK, I wanna make a live-action ‘Beavis and Butt-head’ movie, and here’s the idea.’ But for some reason, I used to hate the idea for years, and now I think maybe there’s something there.”

I think he should still hate the idea. For the hard core fan I don’t think actor portrayals are going to cut it. If they had to, my first thought was of the iconic part Sean Penn played some years back: The infamous Spicoli and his nemesis, Mr. Hand. (For those who can remember, do you know of which movie I speaketh of?)

It was the magic of animation that made a lot of events, settings and occurrences possible in the TV version. I’ve yet to see too many cartoons translate well to non-animation – maybe the Flintstones, but it was still distracting to see elements of a cartoon try to translate to photo-real CGI or special effects.

So in the end, while he torments us with his thoughts on the possibility, I hope he does come back to a B&B continuance, but in the same format it has excelled so well in previously.

If there’s one saving grace, Judge doesn’t think he can sit through a lengthy casting session trying to find the perfect actors for the roles. (That’s because you’re supposed to make a new animated extension of the pair Mike!)

Until then, we’ll just have to wait for literary gems like: “I hate when mimes get in your face and don’t say anything.”
