Here’s our box office report for the weekend of January 27th, 2012 – featuring the performance of new releases ‘The Grey’, ‘Man On A Ledge’ and ‘One For The Money’ as well as returning films like ‘The Descendants’ and 'Underworld Awakening'.

Liam Neeson’s The Grey topped the box office over the weekend, scoring an estimated $20 million. The Joe Carnahan man versus nature film has had solid reviews (read ours) and it again shows that Neeson is the go to guy for middle-age action.

The down side is that The Grey’s debut was less than the Irishman’s last action effort Unknown, which opened to $21.8 million, on its way to a final haul of $63 million. It was also less than Neeson and Carnahan’s The A-Team which started with $25 million and closed with $77 million in the summer of 2010. This R-rated flick still has potential and it could outgross the disappointing Unknown – if it holds.

Neeson’s career resurgence as an action man started in 2009 when Taken, surpassed ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: January 29, 2012

The fourth instalment of the Underworld franchise, Underworld Awakening, topped the box office over the weekend after grossing an estimated $25.4 million. The Kate Beckinsale starrer is doing good business considering that the first installment in the series opened in 2003. That film grossed $21 million on its debut, for a $51 million final total.

Underworld: Evolution scored $26 million when it opened in 2006, on its way to a $62 million final tally. The third, a Beckinsale-free entry released in 2009, subtitled Rise of the Lycans, grossed $20 million during its first weekend and topped out at $45 million. Where this fourth film will figure on this depends on word of mouth (you can read our review here), but it will likely surpass the last installment and score ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: January 22, 2012

As much as we all love Guillermo del Toro, somebody needs to remind him that he can’t be involved with EVERY upcoming Hollywood movie.

The latest project set to utilize the creative talents of the Pan’s Labyrinth filmmaker is a new version of Beauty and the Beast, as is being co-conceived by Denise Di Novi, the producer of early Tim Burton titles like Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Ed Wood. Suffice it to say, she and del Toro are undoubtedly planning a darker spin on the famous fairy tale.

According to Coming Soon, Emma Watson is set to headline the film, which would be her first post-Harry Potter starring role in a fantasy genre piece. She will next appear in the historical drama My Week with Marilyn later this year, and is also ...

Click to continue reading Emma Watson & Guillermo del Toro Team Up For ‘Beauty & the Beast’

Have you dreamed of one day watching Belle and the Beast waltz beneath a massive chandelier or a herd of wildebeests nearly stomp young Simba to death in glorious 3D on the big screen? Well, that fantasy will come half true – both Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King will be released in Blu-ray 3D in 2011.

Walt Disney Pictures announced their slate of Blu-ray 3D releases for this year, which includes those two 2D-animated hits, alongside more recent, digitally-created features like Chicken Little and Meet the Robinsons.

Last summer Disney released the teaser trailer for its planned theatrical re-release of Beauty and the Beast in 3D and announced their intention to do the same with The Lion King.

Legendary animator Glen Keane spent some time with journalists to discuss one of his greatest creations, The Beast from Beauty and the Beast. The recent DVD/Blu-ray re-release delivered a new treasure trove of behind-the-scenes footage, but lacked a truly in-depth look at Keane’s creation of the Beast.

Keane became a household name in animation with The Little Mermaid in 1989. Only two years later, Keane served as the supervising animator on Beauty and the Beast. It was the first animated film to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. The only other was Disney Pixar’s Up nearly 20 years later.

The “Disney Renaissance” was essentially led by Keane’s animation teams, via the successes of The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast ...

Click to continue reading Creating The Beast: An Interview with ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Animator Glen Keane

Walt Disney Pictures is prepared to re-release their 1991 animated hit, Beauty and the Beast in theaters once more – this time in (you guessed it) 3D.

The Mouse House now has a trailer out in promotion of the event, which was originally scheduled for Valentine’s Day of this year but will most likely not reach the U.S. until 2011.

Beauty and the Beast was quite the success when it first arrived in theaters some nineteen years ago. Produced for only $25 million, it would go on to gross over $300 million worldwide and was the first hand-drawn film to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar.

Disney re-released the romantic tale in 2002, complete with a refurbished look, a new musical sequence, and in IMAX format. Its success paved the way for The Lion King ...

Click to continue reading Teaser Trailer For ‘Beauty and the Beast’ 3D
