Adapted from the memoirs by David and Nic Sheff, the film chronicles Nic's struggles with meth addiction, as seen through the eyes of his father. The film entered development in 2008 and spent years stuck in pre-production. Principal photography finally began in March 2017, with editing taking around seven months as the movie was completely recut several times.
