Bryan Singer Is Bringing ‘Battlestar Galactica’ To The Big Screen

It’s time to fire up the Galactica one more time, as Bryan Singer is closing a deal with Universal Pictures to bring Glen A. Larson’s sci-fi series Battlestar Galactica to the big screen – something that Singer has been trying to accomplish for the past 10 years.

Penning Battlestar Galactica’s feature film-debut is screenwriter John Orloff, who previously wrote the Angelina Jolie wartime thriller A Mighty Heart; the animated owl movie Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole; and two episodes of HBO’s Band of Brothers. More recently, Orloff wrote the upcoming Roland Emmerich film, Anonymous.

Proving himself to be as big of a Battlestar Galactica fan as Singer, Orloff was ecstatic when talking to Deadline about his involvement on the project:

‘Battlestar Galactica’ Headed to BBC America

Even though it ended in 2009, Battlestar Galactica is still a hot enough property that BBC America intends to show all 80 hours of the series – including the two-part miniseries that aired in 2004.

Beginning soon, the network will launch its Supernatural Saturday block of programming, which will be headlined by the new season of Doctor Who. In addition to Battlestar Galactica and the good doctor, Supernatural Saturday will also feature other similarly themed programs such as the Eric Mabius-led Outcasts and the ghostly Bedlam.

Pairing the Battlestar re-runs with homegrown BBC content is a sure-fire way to earn some decent ratings on the other side of the pond. Doctor Who certainly has a significant following, but the lesser known British programs will benefit from those looking to ...

‘Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome’ Casts Young William Adama

The BSG universe gets a little bigger today as the first casting news for Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome has come to light. Luke Pasqualino of the UK’s Skins will play the young William Adama, while Ben Cotton will play his commanding officer, Coker.

Pasqualino is best known as Freddie Mclair on the original Skins (not the controversial MTV conversion). The 21-year-old hasn’t had time to do much else, though he has become something of a teen celebrity in the UK for his high-profile role. Cotton, like his Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome character, is a TV veteran whose resume includes CW’s cheerleader dramedy Hellcats and smaller parts on shows like Smallville, Psych and Supernatural. NBC Orders ‘District 17′ Pilot From Ronald D. Moore

Ronald D. Moore, the showrunner whose work includes science fiction favorites like Star Trek: The Next Generation and Battlestar Galactica, is working on a new pilot for NBC.

District 17 will follow a group of policemen working in a magical town called Excelsior.

Not much is known about District 17 at the moment, though the scuttlebutt describes the show as “Harry Potter for grown-ups.” If the show makes it to air it will probably be quite a bit different from anything currently on network TV, though the fantasy/police procedural premise sounds like a mix between Eureka and The Dresden Files, both from NBC’s sister channel SyFy. Back in March we found out that Syfy was looking to find more ways of extending the life of its Battlestar Galactica franchise, seemingly knowing that Caprica wouldn’t be lasting very long. Come October and it’s confirmed that the network is producing a 2-hour TV pilot for a new BSG spin-off, titled Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome. Caprica of course, was canceled two days later.

Should viewers continue to tune into shows they’ve become accustomed to watching or replace it with a new series that might not last the season?

Because of that reoccurring rhetorical question, many shows beginning their freshman year, along with a few returning series, aren’t able to deliver respectable audience numbers. Syfy Producing Two-Hour Pilot For ‘Battlestar Galactica: Blood And Chrome’

Syfy has greenlit a two-hour pilot for a new Battlestar Galactica prequel, Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome. Battlestar Galactica co-creator and executive producer David Eick will return, sans partner Ron Moore. This is the second prequel in the BSG franchise to go into production but there is no word yet on a renewal for the current prequel series, Caprica.

Where Caprica focuses on the early childhood years of William Adama and the inception of the Centurion Cylons, Blood And Chrome will explore a Bill Adama who is fresh from his initial military training thrust into the midst of the first Cylon war.

Ronald D. Moore is no stranger to genre television. He began his career as a writer and producer for series such as Star Trek (The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine & Voyager), HBO’s critically acclaimed Carnivale and Roswell. In 2005 he and David Eick created the Battlestar Glactica reboot for Syfy. The series was both a critical and popular success. Moore developed another space-themed series for Fox last season, entitled Virtuality, which did not make it past its pilot airing. He now makes a move into the realm of fantasy.

Frak! Another Battlestar Galactica Spin-Off?

Syfy is in the middle of a big push for new programming. In addition to the superhero pilot Three Inches we covered earlier today, it appears that the cable channel is also seeking to extend the Battlestar Galactica franchise with another spin-off.

You might think talk of a spin-off Battlestar series would be the symbolic sayonara to Syfy’s Battlestar prequel series, Caprica, which has seen mostly uninspired ratings so far.

Mark Stern, SyFy’s executive vice president of development, was quick to defend Caprica:

“We have a lot of hope for that show. The (DVR data) has been very promising and growing week after week. The ratings don’t reflect the potential audience.”

Maybe so, but developing a new Battlestar property certainly does seem to indicate that a large portion of the Galactica audience never made the jump to Caprica – and ...

This weekend the box office stays at Shutter Island; Katee Sackhoff gets her own pilot; Freida Pinto gets involved in the War of the Gods; we get the team-ups we’ve always wanted – Woody Allen along with Owen Wilson and Ryan Reynolds and Nicolas Cage as cavemen in The Croods!

Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese remained kings of the box office as Shutter Island banked another $21 million to bring its total to $75 million. It looks like this just might out-gross The Departed to be the duo’s highest grossing film.

Bruce Willis’ Cop Out was second with a weekend take of $17 million. The film also stars Tracy Morgan and Seann William Scott. Caprica on Syfy Is Floundering In The Ratings

When Caprica premiered on the Syfy Channel, it premiered to 1.6 million sets of eyeballs. The number wasn’t as phenomenal as many would have thought that this Battlestar Galactica (BSG) prequel would have brought in. But heck, they previewed the heck out the Caprica pilot in the year prior to when it aired.

I presumed the ratings of the premiere were low due to the over-saturation of the pilot. But friends were saying how dull the show was and the ratings would seem to back that, as the 2nd episode brought in 1.4 million viewers & the 3rd episode, 1.1 million. (It was beat out by Swamp Loggers on Discovery. Ouch!)

For me, I like the show because everything that happens are precursors to the end game of BSG. That’s how I get past that damn mournful dirge of a ...

Avatar Leads 2010 Saturn Awards Nominations

Today marks the day when the nominations for the 36th Annual Saturn Awards are given out. In case you’re not familiar with them, they are given out by The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films (they also include TV shows and stage productions) so as a reader of Screen Rant I believe they’re right up your alley .

The awards will be given out on June 24th, so we have over four months to speculate and choose the nominees we’d give the award to. The categories range from the usual Best Film (separated into Fantasy, Horror, Science Fiction etc) to Best DVD release and Best DVD Special Edition.

NBC’s Spin on Stargate Universe Ratings Falls Short

All we ever hear from NBC when it pitches Stargate Universe is how it beat Stargate Atlantis in some fashion. They keep trying to equate Stargate Universe ratings to something spectacular. Sure, the way they spin it, the numbers are great. But let’s take a closer look at a few items from both shows.

When Stargate Universe (SGU) premiered on October 2nd of 2009, Syfy announced its excitement about the viewer numbers. The 2-part SGU premiere produced 2.3 million viewers, which for Syfy on a Friday night, were decent numbers.

The show averaged almost 2.9 million viewers through October and Syfy noted with a press release that 2.9 million viewers was better than the last season of Stargate Atlantis. Or 36% more viewers.

Sci Fi to Syfy: Syfy Has Its Best Year Ever

When Dave Howe stepped up to the plate at Sci Fi, took the reigns of the network and started heading them towards their new future, he wanted to expand on the number of markets the network was in, which included the youth market (demographic). Howe was also concerned with replacing their flagship television series, Battlestar Galactica & expanding on Ghost Hunters.

As Syfy rebranded itself, it also took the high road to trying to create improved quality content for the channel. In the fracas of it all, they “repainted” the familiar fun that was Stargate and created Stargate Universe – much to the angst of the core Stargate fans.

Things are going according to plan for the future of the X-Men film universe… at least according to my thoughts on what we’d see from Fox Studios going forward. As expected, Bryan Singer is back in the fold and will be directing the prequel X-Men: First Class, and X-Men Origins: Magneto is seemingly even less likely to happen than before.

While some X-Men fans were hopeful of the second X-Men Origins film following the history of the master of magnetism, to me it was the least likely of the projects in development to happen. Not only would such a project require a re-cast of the title character, which would never please the full fanbase, but it would therefore be less bankable since the actors would be new to the franchise. Stargate Universe Ratings: The Story Unfolds

When Stargate Universe (SGU) premiered on October 2nd of 2009, it brought in 2.3 million viewers. This included both parts 1 and 2 of the premiere. Part 3 of the premiere episode titled “Air” hit the peak of the ratings ride with just over 2.4 million viewers.

After that, the numbers declined slowly but surely until they bottomed out on November 6th with the episode “Earth” at a paltry 1.6 million viewers.

I believe this decline is a result of the franchise fans slowly but surely giving up on the show because it wasn’t the light-humored and quipping series they were all expecting.

We’ve seen the scathing remarks in various articles here on Screen Rant, where everyone is getting a “hate on” for Stargate Universe. In some of your opinions ...
