Battle: Los Angeles (or if you’re into the “texting” version, Battle: LA)  was #4 on our 2011 Most Anticipated Movies list – and as we’ve made clear before, just because we have a lot of anticipation for a movie doesn’t mean we know it’s going to be great.

Battle: Los Angeles is one of the most anticipated films of Spring 2011 – promising a city-wide devastation of the iconic L.A. area. While the film is largely expected to forgo on-the-nose references to famous L.A. landmarks, in favor of a more Dark Knight-like realism, the movie is still set to present one of the biggest beatings the iconic West Coast city has ever endured.

In honor of Hollywood’s obsession with trashing their home-turf, we thought it’d be fun to countdown the best L.A. movie disasters and give credit to each categorical source of destruction – based on how successful he, she, they, or it, were at pummeling the “City of Angels” into rubble.

Battle: Los Angeles was a labor of love for star Aaron Eckhart and director Jonathan Liebesman. Liebesman spent months creating an impressive pitch package (including a trailer that Eckhart gave his time to act in) in order to secure the job. Their efforts were eventually rewarded, and the pair were able to create the film that they had envisioned.

Forget the super-powered alien teen models from I Am Number Four – the legit invasion of planet Earth by hostile extraterrestrials in 2011 gets underway next Friday with Battle: Los Angeles (and, technically, Mars Needs Moms as well, since it gets released the same day).

Sony/Columbia is heightening awareness for the already highly-anticipated picture and has produced no less than nine new television trailers, clips, and spots for the film. Most of the clips recycle the same few minutes of footage over and over, so it won’t feel like you’ve seen the entire movie after watching them all.

While Battle: Los Angeles, the film, opens on March 11^{th -} today marks the 69^th anniversary of the “real” Battle of Los Angeles, also known as “The Great Los Angeles Air Raid,” when late-night February 24th/early morning February 25th, 1942 several unidentified objects were sighted hovering over the Los Angeles coastline. The upcoming film is, of course, fictional – but the story was, in part, inspired by the following actual events that took place almost 70 years ago.

Battle: Los Angeles opens early next month, and yesterday we were given some early insight into what to expect from this latest version of an alien-invasion tale from the film’s star Aaron Eckhart, at the Los Angeles press junket.

Eckhart stressed that it was vitally important to both he, and director Jonathan Liebesman, to infuse the film with a sense of realism saying that, “The goal was: this is a war movie, a documentary style war movie – with aliens in it.”

There is no bigger fan of Battle: Los Angeles than one of its own stars, Cory Hardrict. The 31-year-old actor stars alongside Aaron Eckhart and Michelle Rodriguez as soldiers in a platoon that faces the world’s biggest threat – alien invasion.

Two of the biggest pre-summer releases, which arguably should be summer releases, are that of Sucker Punch and Battle: Los Angeles. Both films made a big introductory splash at San Diego Comic-Con last summer to the most hardcore of movie geeks and since then, have both had very intense, action-packed and downright cool movie trailers.

As  both films prepare for March releases, we’ve seen as much as we can from the trailers and photos thus far without spoiling either.
