What really constitutes a “disappointment” is pretty subjective. To use a couple of examples: some people would say they were really let down by Captain America: The First Avenger or Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, simply because the films weren’t as fantastic as they had hoped. Others, though, would argue those titles are still rock-solid films and that certain moviegoers’ expectations were so overblown that no motion picture could possibly meet them. But that’s a whole other discussion…

Today, we have a list of 10 films released in 2011 that simply failed to live up to the Screen Rant staff’s collective expectations. Bear in mind, this isn’t at all synonymous with a “worst of” list for 2011 – in fact, you may notice that a handful of the movies listed here actually received decent reviews from ...

Click to continue reading The 10 Most Disappointing Movies of 2011

This week in DVD and Blu-ray includes a true classic and a few not-so-classics. While one of the new releases is actually a worthy purchase if you own a solid home theater, the other two are hardly even worth a rental.

This week has a new Criterion Collection release for hardcore movie fans. The Makioka Sisters makes its way to the Blu-ray format with an esteemed new release. On the television side of home video, Season 2 of Supernatural and Season 1 of Haven reach home video.

In addition to those and the following titles, the much-anticipated indie thriller Rubber hits home video. It’s a bizarre piece of work that explores a psychotic telepathic wheel that has a propensity for murdering living creatures. I say give it a chance, but you may want to hide the kids.

Russell Brand and James Marsden Hop to the top of the box office; Time Bandits and The Long Good Friday go from Handmade to remade films; Justin Beiber and Ashton Kutcher ask What Would Kenny Do?; Antoine Fuqua dusts off the shoulder pads for Dynasty (well, sort of) ; a new writer takes a bite at Piranha 3DD and Keira Knightley makes friends with Steve Carell for The End of the World.

Box Office

Hop topped the box office after grossing an estimated $38 million this weekend. The CGI/live action hybrid featuring X-Men’s James Marsden and the voice of Russell Brand quietly surpassed studio expectations despite mediocre reviews. Personally, I’m not a fan of this genre and can’t fathom why anybody would be interested in making this, although I am fully aware that family films can make serious money at the box office – despite their (often) poor ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: April 3rd, 2011

This week:

The box office sees a Wimpy Kid knock out Zack Snyder with a Sucker Punch; Johnny Depp is a Thin Man; Dennis Quaid joins Gerard Butler in Playing the Field; Liv Tyler kicks The Hobbit; Robert De Niro, Forest Whitaker, and Curtis (50 Cent) Jackson are Freelancers, and more!

Box Office

Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch received a… sucker punch on its release by Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules. The family film should out gross Snyder’s latest fantasy flick by about $5 million. The $19 million debut of Sucker Punch is in line with Warner Bros’ (lowered) expectations. The film received mixed reviews (read ours here) and it looks like it might not connect with an audience for the long haul. Warner Bros. rolled a dice on this (much like they did with Chris Nolan’s Inception) and while it might not have ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: March 27th, 2011

If you go down to the woods today you’re in for a big surprise – an alien invasion with Battle: Los Angeles. These aliens might be seeing Red, but they aren’t from Mars; Bruckheimer & Bay are Cowboys; director Brad Furman has Intricate details; BP are in Deepwater; Vin Diesel and director David Twohy get Riddick-ulous; Tom Petty might be Free Fallin‘ but his daughter Adria won’t Suffocate and Ellen Barkin enters A.
Some say that love is a battlefield, but they just don’t follow the weekly box office. This weekend a major battle took place at the box office, and like any combat situation, there were some casualties. Three high profile new movies opened, but only one could be the winner. Battle: Los Angeles, Red Riding Hood and Mars Needs Moms all fought it out for the box office crown, but it was Battle: ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: March 13th, 2011

It has shortcomings, but 'Battle: Los Angeles' tries hard at being a serious alien invasion movie. Intense battle scenes & an old fashioned portrayal of the military might win audiences over.

Screen Rant’s Vic Holtreman reviews Battle: Los Angeles

Battle: Los Angeles (or if you’re into the “texting” version, Battle: LA) was #4 on our 2011 Most Anticipated Movies list – and as we’ve made clear before, just because we have a lot of anticipation for a movie doesn’t mean we know it’s going to be great.

Well Battle: LA isn’t great – but for a March action movie I’d call it at least good.

This film brings us yet another alien invasion story, with aspects we’ve seen before in movies in this genre – and others as well. Reminiscent of Independence Day, the story revolves around just a couple of days of events – the day leading up to the invasion and the day of.
In honor of the devastation Jonathan Liebesman's 'Battle: Los Angeles' is set to inflict on the box office, we count down our picks for the top film disasters that left L.A. in ruins.

Battle: Los Angeles is one of the most anticipated films of Spring 2011 – promising a city-wide devastation of the iconic L.A. area. While the film is largely expected to forgo on-the-nose references to famous L.A. landmarks, in favor of a more Dark Knight-like realism, the movie is still set to present one of the biggest beatings the iconic West Coast city has ever endured.

In honor of Hollywood’s obsession with trashing their home-turf, we thought it’d be fun to countdown the best L.A. movie disasters and give credit to each categorical source of destruction – based on how successful he, she, they, or it, were at pummeling the “City of Angels” into rubble.

A few rules before we get started:

Battle: Los Angeles was a labor of love for star Aaron Eckhart and director Jonathan Liebesman. Liebesman spent months creating an impressive pitch package (including a trailer that Eckhart gave his time to act in) in order to secure the job. Their efforts were eventually rewarded, and the pair were able to create the film that they had envisioned.

Battle: LA opens this Friday, and we had the chance to talk with both Eckhart and Liebesman at the Los Angeles press junket about what inspired their passionate response to this material.

Forget the super-powered alien teen models from I Am Number Four – the legit invasion of planet Earth by hostile extraterrestrials in 2011 gets underway next Friday with Battle: Los Angeles (and, technically, Mars Needs Moms as well, since it gets released the same day).

Sony/Columbia is heightening awareness for the already highly-anticipated picture and has produced no less than nine new television trailers, clips, and spots for the film. Most of the clips recycle the same few minutes of footage over and over, so it won’t feel like you’ve seen the entire movie after watching them all.

While Battle: Los Angeles, the film, opens on March 11th - today marks the 69th anniversary of the “real” Battle of Los Angeles, also known as “The Great Los Angeles Air Raid,” when late-night February 24th/early morning February 25th, 1942 several unidentified objects were sighted hovering over the Los Angeles coastline. The upcoming film is, of course, fictional – but the story was, in part, inspired by the following actual events that took place almost 70 years ago.

In the wake of the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941, and less than three months into the United States’ entry into WWII, people were understandably shaken, and naturally assumed that they were, once again, under threat of enemy fire.

Battle: Los Angeles opens early next month, and yesterday we were given some early insight into what to expect from this latest version of an alien-invasion tale from the film’s star Aaron Eckhart, at the Los Angeles press junket.

Eckhart stressed that it was vitally important to both he, and director Jonathan Liebesman, to infuse the film with a sense of realism saying that, “The goal was: this is a war movie, a documentary style war movie – with aliens in it.”

The actor went on to make a comparison to director Chris Nolan’s approach to the Batman franchise, and The Dark Knight in particular. He takes note of how the film utilizes intimate physical locations as a backdrop, rather than falling back on extensive CGI destruction of more archetypal vistas (like the Hollywood ...

Click to continue reading Aaron Eckhart: Battle: LA Has Same ‘Real Feel’ as The Dark Knight

One of the titles that made a big splash at Comic-Con 2010 was Battle: Los Angeles and our anticipation for B:LA was only heightened by the release of the chilling theatrical trailers. Hot on the heels of the effective Battle: Los Angeles Super Bowl XLV TV spot comes an actual scene from the film that should get your adrenaline pumping.

Columbia Pictures has so far promoted the gritty alien invasion drama as being in the vein of Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down, and this first clip from Battle: Los Angeles seems to confirm just that.

Super Bowl XLV has begun and while some place their bets on the epic Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Green Bay Packers match-up, others find themselves more interested in the expensive commercial breaks, where the biggest and best car, beer and other advertisers premiere their most important (and most entertaining) television commercials of the year.

You can check out what we’ve already picked out as the best Super Bowl commercials of 2011, but we’re much more interested in the Super Bowl movie trailers. There are a plethora of major film TV spots to get excited about, and many have debuted online already. But we patiently (and anxiously) await the biggest ones of the event: Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor, Super 8, Transformers: Dark of the Moon and more!

Battle: Los Angeles, the action-heavy alien invasion film, follows a platoon of Marines fighting for the strategic LA battleground. With obvious comparisons being made to Black Hawk Down and District 9, and a very impressive presentation at last summer’s International Comic-Con, director Jonathan Liebesman, Battle: Los Angeles could is a contender to be the biggest pre-summer box office hit of the year.

'Battle: Los Angeles' star Cory Hardrict shares his excitement for the upcoming alien invasion movie in our exclusive interview.

There is no bigger fan of Battle: Los Angeles than one of its own stars, Cory Hardrict. The 31-year-old actor stars alongside Aaron Eckhart and Michelle Rodriguez as soldiers in a platoon that faces the world’s biggest threat – alien invasion.

Hardrict took some time to answer a few of our questions on the movie and his enthusiasm is unmatched.

Sony has done a great job so far at keeping Battle: Los Angeles under wraps. We know little of the aliens and the overall focus of the film.
Two of the biggest pre-summer releases, which arguably should be summer releases, are that of Sucker Punch and Battle: Los Angeles. Both films made a big introductory splash at San Diego Comic-Con last summer to the most hardcore of movie geeks and since then, have both had very intense, action-packed and downright cool movie trailers.

As both films prepare for March releases, we’ve seen as much as we can from the trailers and photos thus far without spoiling either. If you’re as excited as we are about either, check out the six brand new posters for Sucker Punch and Battle: Los Angeles, the latter which is internationally known as World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles. You know, because it needs to be emphasized that it’s not all about America.

The Super Bowl has become the premier event for companies to display new, clever and often funny ads unveiling their new and upcoming products. In recent years Hollywood too has seized the opportunity to put their movies in front of the very large audience at one time – which is like icing on cake for us dual football/movie fans…

The third official theatrical trailer for 'Battle: Los Angeles' emphasizes the horror of the alien invasion, while showing more alien vehicles, weapons and much, much more.

The film has seen two trailers and numerous posters, reminiscing on real life UFO sightings throughout history, but each has only shown slight reveals of the aliens and their tech, leaving the rest to your imagination. As refreshing as it’s been to have not been shown all in a theatrical movie trailer, the third Battle: Los Angeles trailer has just released and it presents a whole new look at ...

Click to continue reading New ‘Battle: Los Angeles’ Trailer Brings The Alien Onslaught
