Before Avatar hit theaters – obliterating box office records left and right – James Cameron had tentative plans to press ahead sooner (rather than later) with an adaptation of the popular Battle Angel Alita franchise. That sci-fi series originated as a Japanese comic book/manga created by Yukito Kishiro back in 1990, eventually spawning anime and video game spinoffs, along with a prequel manga series titled Ashen Victor (among other related products).

When not diving into the Mariana Trench or overseeing the 3D post-conversion of Titanic, Cameron has devoted most of his time over the past couple years to developing a pair of Avatar sequels – which won’t be reaching theaters for at least another 2-3 years. James Cameron Hasn’t Forgotten About ‘Battle Angel’

Before Avatar was even released, the word “trilogy” was getting tossed around and many were clamoring for details about sequels to a film they hadn’t even seen yet. Director James Cameron wasn’t just finishing up a fifteen-year-old labor of love, he was committing to a franchise and a brand that – at this point – has taken on a life of its own.

Further Avatar films were inevitable, but the prospect of two sequels potentially shooting back-to-back calls into question the future of other films Cameron’s had on the back-burner – specifically, Battle Angel.

Coming Soon recently sat down with Cameron to talk about Avatar’s upcoming theatrical re-release and he spoke briefly about Battle Angel and his desire to see it happen:

Avatar Producer Talks Sequel and Cameron’s Upcoming Projects

Avatar 2, Battle Angel (see above) and The Dive - three movie titles that have one thing in common: they’re all on the slate of upcoming projects for director James Cameron. Recently, Avatar producer (and longtime Cameron collaborator) Jon Landau (Titanic) sat down with French magazine Le Film to talk about the acclaimed director’s Avatar project, and (more importantly) the rumored projects Cameron will be working on down the line.

Special thanks to the guys over at Slash Film, who have done the legwork of translating of the quotes that Landau gave to Le Film. I guess the best place to start would be with the possibility of an Avatar sequel:
