DVD/Blu-ray Breakdown: April 6, 2010

In one of the weaker weeks of new releases in recent memory, Blu-ray is giving the world a few re-release treats. This week in “The Breakdown” we spotlight some old and new classics making their way to the specialized format and a couple of box office duds debuting on shelves.

It doesn’t get too much better next week, but getting the Lord of the Rings Trilogy on Blu-ray should leave you with plenty to watch until the next big release comes along. While the new releases this week are favored by some, they were financial nightmares, collecting less than $10 million combined at the box office. But who knows, some films have a fantastic shelf life after fairing poorly in theaters…

Interview: Katie Chonacas on Bad Lieutenant & More!

Werner Herzog’s Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans starring Nicolas Cage and Val Kilmer opens next month and I got the chance to speak to actress/model/producer Katie Chonacas about the film and her career.

During the course of the interview, Chonacas informed us that John Carpenter’s planned Nicolas Cage film Riot is dead and she also gave us some news of the new Forrest Whitaker and 50 Cent film version of Jekyll and Hyde.

New Official Trailer For Werner Herzog’s Bad Lieutenant

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, a slightly over-the-top remake, is the latest project by Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man, Invincible). The film made the rounds on the festival circuit and Screen Rant correspondent John Foote, caught a viewing of it at the Toronto International Film Festival where it was named as an official selection. He walked away with praise for the project that he thought was somewhat bizarre.

The major call out we’re seeing commonly reported from those who’ve screened the film is about Nicolas Cage’s strong performance. Here at Screen Rant, John thought described Cage’s work in this film as “hugely entertaining and wildly over the top performance,” and that’s it’s some of the best work of his career.

TIFF Report: Nicolas Cage in Bad Lieutenant

Moving from film to film can be draining, and I have to confess fatigue is settling in as the festival hits the midway point. Seeing four and five films a day is tough work (honest) and when you are moving between the screenings to go do interviews with the actors and directors, you have to stay sharp.

Strong coffee, and lots of it works for me.

Nicolas Cage gives a hugely entertaining and wildly over the top performance in Werner Herzog’s remake of Bad Lieutenant and though the film in no way approaches the nastiness of the original, Cage keeps us on our toes with a performance that consistently walks the line. Cage has always been one of the most courageous actors working in movies, willing to go big for a part, even if it means going too ...

Val Kilmer Career Update

I’m a huge Val Kilmer fan. I think that he is one of the best actors working today. I don’t mean that as hyperbole – I mean that as fact!

Kilmer had a brief moment in the mid-to late 90′s where he was a major star and I have always been a bit saddened that this was never capitalised on.

Kilmer has a charisma and a work ethic that nobody else in Hollywood seems to have!

Not only has he just wrapped Streets of Blood, the man has Felony coming out this month (US only), the currently filming Thaw in the pipeline as well as his recent attachment to the indie drama The Silver Cord, but the former Batman has also now signed up to the Werner Herzog directed remake of The Bad Lieutenant.

Kilmer will play the partner of Nicolas Cage. The film ...
