Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: May 20th 2012

The Avengers fought-off top competition to retain its strong hold at the top of the box office. The Marvel adventure should gross an estimated $55 million worth of green over the three days, a number which gives the film an amazing $457 million total.

The Avengers is now on track to become the third highest-grossing film of all time at the US box office, and it should beat fellow comic book adventure The Dark Knight in the coming weeks (that film topped out at $533 million). The $220 million Shawarma advert probably won’t beat Titanic ($658 million) or Avatar ($760 million), but it should end its run in the company of those James Cameron films. James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ Sequels Are His Only Focus

People looking forward to James Cameron making films outside of the world of Avatar are going to be very disappointed. The famed Titanic director has announced that he has disbanded the development arm of his production company and wants to focus solely on Avatar-related movies (specifically Avatar 2 & 3). So fans who were hoping to see Cameron finally make Battle Angel, True Lies 2 or even more Aliens and/or Terminator films are going to feel very, very deflated with the news that he intends to stay on Pandora.

Cameron has never been one to play the Hollywood game, and this latest move appears to be a way of giving him the freedom to experiment with technology without having to make any artistic compromises.

‘Avatar 2′ Producer Talks the Sequel’s Potential Release Delay

James Cameron’s name is trending online once again (did it ever stop?), thanks to his original mega-blockbuster, Titanic, beginning a 3D theatrical re-release today (at the time of writing this). It’s no shock then that journalists and news outlets are doing what they can to inquire about the upcoming sequels to the filmmaker’s 3D sci-fi epic Avatar.

Titanic and Avatar franchise producer Jon Landau has also been touring the press junket circuit of late, offering tidbits of information about Avatar 2 – which he says had already begun its arduous effects-work process. However, Landau is also suggesting that the massive nature of the sequel may mean that its previously-planned Christmas 2014 theatrical release date is no longer feasible.

However, seeing how it is the sequel to the unadjusted highest-grossing release in the history of motion pictures – and also the film that truly got the modern 3D craze going – any news concerning the project is worth reporting on.

James Cameron Talks ‘Avatar 2′ & Sigourney Weaver’s Return

James Cameron recently opened up a bit about Avatar 2 while on hand to receive his “Breakthrough Award” from Popular Mechanics, in honor of his achievements in film technology.

Sigourney Weaver was the one who actually introduced Cameron for his award, so naturally, the Avatar 2 talk ventured into the area of Weaver’s character, Dr. Grace Augustine, and her rumored return for the sequel [Spoiler Alert]… despite the fact that her character seemingly died in the first installment.

In the forthcoming quotes, Cameron tries to play coy about Dr. Augustine’s return in Avatar 2 - a tactic which is totally undermined by the fact that Weaver herself said in another interview that she knows the stories for both Avatar 2 and Avatar 3, and that she would indeed be back. Check out ...

Sigourney Weaver Offers ‘Avatar 2′ and ‘Ghostbusters 3′ Update

Classic fan-favorite (and multiple Oscar-nominated) starlet Sigourney Weaver will return to theaters this month in the action flick, Abduction, and will co-headline the thriller Red Lights next year. However, most everyone really wants to know about two of the actress’ (theoretical) upcoming franchise sequels: Avatar 2 and the perennially-delayed Ghostbusters 3.

James Cameron is expected to shoot Avatar 2 and 3 back-to-back, beginning in 2012; meanwhile, Dan Aykroyd has been talking of late about Ghostbusters 3 starting production next spring, with or without Bill Murray. But will Weaver be involved with either project?

As we edge ever closer to the biggest movie award ceremony around, the Oscars, we have another set of nominations to mull over: The 37th Annual Saturn Awards.

While the Oscars, Golden Globes and the BAFTAs tend to recognize the more “serious” films (some would say in a way that is out of touch), award ceremonies like the Saturn Awards nominate films that average moviegoers would likely champion as their favorites of the year – not to mention the ceremony also recognizes the best TV shows and DVD release the year had to offer.

James Cameron Announces Avatar 2 & 3 Release Dates

Audience members yearning to return to the exotically extraterrestrial locale of Pandora will have to wait for at least three more years, as James Cameron has confirmed that the first of his back-to-back Avatar sequels won’t arrive until Christmas of 2014.

While Cameron’s original 3D sci-fi smash frequently changed release dates before it finally settled on December 2009, both Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 are less likely budge from their still tentative winter holiday dates in 2014 and 2015, respectively.

Entertainment Weekly spoke to Cameron, who told them “I am in the process of writing the next two ‘Avatar’ films now. 2010 was a fantastic year in home video releases. Some of the most revered classics finally made their way to the Blu-ray format, while other titles were given a more in-depth re-release. Without question, 2010 was proof that Blu-ray is here to stay.

If you have a Blu-ray player or get one over the holidays, we’ve got a list of the titles that are must-haves for your home video collection. These Blu-rays make our list for a variety of reasons; Some are incomprehensibly comprehensive collections like Lost: The Complete Collection and The Alien Anthology. Others are beautifully remastered classics like Psycho and The Exorcist. There are even a few that needed no enhancement, but were given star treatment by the always impressive Criterion Collection, like The Thin Red Line and Seven Samurai.

There are plenty of threats to the entertainment industry every year, but movie piracy consistently comes up as the biggest. Authorities continue to seek avenues to shut down the illegal downloading of movies, but apparently it is not enough. In 2010, nearly 100 million downloads were recorded – and those were just the top ten most pirated movies of the year.

The misconception with pirated movies is that those who watch on their computer are not actually going to the theater. For the most part, we can assume this is true. But when a film like Avatar comes in at the top spot with 16.5 million illegal downloads, one must wonder how many of those people also contributed to the movie’s record-breaking $2.7 billion at the worldwide box office.

There are several calendar dates throughout the year where studios rush to release all their big tentpole films in an attempt to maximize on the number of people who will see them, and each date corresponds with a major U.S. holiday – Memorial Day, 4^th of July, and Christmas.

Films released during Memorial Day and 4^th of July usually open on the exact dates of those holidays, while films being released for the Christmas season begin showing up in theaters anywhere from ten to fifteen days before December 25^th.

Some of these films are highly anticipated and draw in millions of viewers, generating obscenely large box office numbers (think Avatar), while other films only have moderate expectations. Then there are the failures – the films so bad, so ridiculously inept, ...

This week’s DVD and Blu-ray releases feature a few major titles. You may need to spend more than usual on each if you want to enhance your collection with some of the most recognizable names in movies.

The biggest offering this week marks the second home video release for Avatar – now with a handful of features. Another epic film comes out on Blu-ray this week: Metropolis enhanced to its finest quality yet on Blu-ray.

Interestingly, this week also features a handful of 3D home video releases. I’m not sure yet why so many are hitting shelves today, but if you actually purchased a 3D television, you can put it to good use. In his welcome to the press, for Avatar Global Media Day James Cameron said that he felt the the experience of the day was a great opportunity “whether you are fans of the film or not, to get behind the curtain behind some processes that are really revolutionizing how films are being made.”

I couldn’t agree more, and this, is in essence, is the reason that I feel that this Avatar Extended Collector’s Edition Blu-ray is more than worth it for people who are genuinely passionate about, and interested in the filmmaking process.

Last month, in an effort to both promote, and illustrate the purpose of, the release of the Avatar Collector’s Edition Blu-ray/DVD, James Cameron held an event called the Avatar Global Media Day - where reporters from across the globe were invited to an in-person tour of all the stages involved in the creation of Avatar.

I was lucky enough to attend the event, which was akin to taking an in-person tour of “Capturing Avatar” – the feature-length documentary about the making of the film, which will be available with the Collector’s Edition Blu-ray.

Throughout the day we were taken to a series of ten stations which represented the various departments, steps, creative and technological processes involved in producing Avatar.

‘Avatar’ Producer Addresses Sequel Rumors

Only months after the release of Avatar, director James Cameron was already dropping hints about what fans could expect from the inevitable sequels. One of his earliest declarations was that Avatar 2 would take audiences into a region of Pandora unexplored by the original film – the oceans.

It’s been confirmed that Avatar 2 will be Cameron’s next project and that it will be shot back-to-back with Avatar 3. Although screenplays for the sequels have yet to be written, there are some factions of the Internet rumor mill that seem to believe the first sequel will take place entirely underwater.

James Cameron Criticizes Post-Production 3D & Talks Glasses-Free 3D

It’s no secret that we’re suspicious of 3D films here at Screen Rant (our own Paul Young wrote an excellent article about the trend back in March) but when someone of James Cameron’s stature starts talking about the subject, the smart thing to do is listen.

Cameron, whose multi-billion dollar grossing Avatar is widely touted as an example of “good” 3D, recently appeared at Blu-Con, a Blu-ray trade show in Beverly Hills. During the conference, Cameron spoke out about the state of 3D filmmaking, why he feels that post-production 3D conversion is a mistake and how 3D TV will force Hollywood to begin filming in 3D in the next few years.

Yesterday, James Cameron hosted an event in preparation for the 3-disk Blu-ray and DVD release of Avatar Extended Collectors Edition; the event was entitled the Avatar Global Media Day, and has now been dubbed simply “Avatar Day.” Not to be confused with the original “Avatar Day”, where 15 minutes of footage from Avatar was screened in theaters nation-wide, prior to the films theatrical release. Not content with $2.77 billion in worldwide box office takings and a record-setting home release this past April, James Cameron and 20th Century Fox are releasing another version of Avatar in the form of the Extended Collector’s Edition this November.

We’ve had hints for quite a while now at what we can expect from this new special edition of Avatar, the most recent update popping up back in August.
