Oscar-winning director James Cameron announces that he plans to stop actively developing films and plans to focus his career on making 'Avatar' sequels.

People looking forward to James Cameron making films outside of the world of Avatar are going to be very disappointed. The famed Titanic director has announced that he has disbanded the development arm of his production company and wants to focus solely on Avatar-related movies (specifically Avatar 2 & 3). So fans who were hoping to see Cameron finally make Battle Angel, True Lies 2 or even more Aliens and/or Terminator films are going to feel very, very deflated with the news that he intends to stay on Pandora.

Cameron has never been one to play the Hollywood game, and this latest move appears to be a way of giving him the freedom to experiment with technology without having to make any artistic compromises.

Producer Jon Landau says the first 'Avatar' sequel may not make its tentative 2014 release date. Read on for more tidbits about James Cameron's blockbuster sci-fi sequel.

James Cameron’s name is trending online once again (did it ever stop?), thanks to his original mega-blockbuster, Titanic, beginning a 3D theatrical re-release today (at the time of writing this). It’s no shock then that journalists and news outlets are doing what they can to inquire about the upcoming sequels to the filmmaker’s 3D sci-fi epic Avatar.

Titanic and Avatar franchise producer Jon Landau has also been touring the press junket circuit of late, offering tidbits of information about Avatar 2 – which he says had already begun its arduous effects-work process. However, Landau is also suggesting that the massive nature of the sequel may mean that its previously-planned Christmas 2014 theatrical release date is no longer feasible.

When Empire sat down recently with Landau to chat about the dual Avatar sequels (specifically, ...

Click to continue reading ‘Avatar 2′ Producer Talks the Sequel’s Potential Release Delay

We’ve still got three years (at the time of writing this) until Avatar 2 actually hits theaters. However, seeing how it is the sequel to the unadjusted highest-grossing release in the history of motion pictures – and also the film that truly got the modern 3D craze going – any news concerning the project is worth reporting on.

Avatar universe mastermind James Cameron recently touched on the topic of whether or not Sigourney Weaver will return for the followup – and now, he’s offered a few additional hints about the film, with respects to matters such as plot, scope, and the (extraterrestrial) settings that will be explored.

It’s long been known that Avatar 2 aims to explore the oceans of Pandora to some degree – though, how much of the movie will actually take place ...

Click to continue reading James Cameron Teases ‘Avatar 2′ Plot & Setting Details

James Cameron floats a few hints about what we can expect to see in 'Avatar 2' and addresses those longstanding rumors that Sigourney Weaver's character will return.

James Cameron recently opened up a bit about Avatar 2 while on hand to receive his “Breakthrough Award” from Popular Mechanics, in honor of his achievements in film technology.

Sigourney Weaver was the one who actually introduced Cameron for his award, so naturally, the Avatar 2 talk ventured into the area of Weaver’s character, Dr. Grace Augustine, and her rumored return for the sequel [Spoiler Alert]… despite the fact that her character seemingly died in the first installment.

In the forthcoming quotes, Cameron tries to play coy about Dr. Augustine’s return in Avatar 2 - a tactic which is totally undermined by the fact that Weaver herself said in another interview that she knows the stories for both Avatar 2 and Avatar 3, and that she would indeed be back.
While Sigourney Weaver is confident she'll return for 'Avatar 2' filming, she's not so sure about 'Ghostbusters 3' - assuming the threequel is actually made.

Classic fan-favorite (and multiple Oscar-nominated) starlet Sigourney Weaver will return to theaters this month in the action flick, Abduction, and will co-headline the thriller Red Lights next year. However, most everyone really wants to know about two of the actress’ (theoretical) upcoming franchise sequels: Avatar 2 and the perennially-delayed Ghostbusters 3.

James Cameron is expected to shoot Avatar 2 and 3 back-to-back, beginning in 2012; meanwhile, Dan Aykroyd has been talking of late about Ghostbusters 3 starting production next spring, with or without Bill Murray. But will Weaver be involved with either project?

On the Avatar front, it seems the answer is “definitely,” as unexpected as that may be (more on that in a moment). The third Ghostbusters flick, however, remains more of a wild card – ...

Click to continue reading Sigourney Weaver Offers ‘Avatar 2′ and ‘Ghostbusters 3′ Update

Oscar-winning box office titans James Cameron and Peter Jackson are hard at work on their latest tentpole projects. Cameron is in the midst of scripting both Avatar 2 and Avatar 3, while Jackson has actually commenced filming his long-delayed two-part adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit.

The latest updates on both these gentlemen’s new cinematic endeavors are of a technical nature – namely, that Cameron has secured a new studio for shooting his Avatar sequels, while Jackson dropped the Internet a note about why exactly he’s filming his Hobbit movies at 48 frames per second (fps) instead of the conventional 24.

There are several big movies that were planning to shoot in and around Japan in the next year, but in the light of the recent earthquake/tsunami tragedy, and the continuing dangers plaguing the region, it’s unthinkable that anyone could hope to launch a major Hollywood production there anytime soon.

20th Century Fox currently currently has two major films that were slated to be in production the Pacific region: the comic book movie sequel The Wolverine and Avatar 2, the sequel to James Cameron’s 3D mega-smash hit.

Everything started out so well for The Wolverine.
Audience members yearning to return to the exotically extraterrestrial locale of Pandora will have to wait for at least three more years, as James Cameron has confirmed that the first of his back-to-back Avatar sequels won’t arrive until Christmas of 2014.

While Cameron’s original 3D sci-fi smash frequently changed release dates before it finally settled on December 2009, both Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 are less likely budge from their still tentative winter holiday dates in 2014 and 2015, respectively.

Producer Jon Landau discusses how much of 'Avatar 2' will take place underwater and whether or not the film will end with a cliffhanger.

Only months after the release of Avatar, director James Cameron was already dropping hints about what fans could expect from the inevitable sequels. One of his earliest declarations was that Avatar 2 would take audiences into a region of Pandora unexplored by the original film – the oceans.

It’s been confirmed that Avatar 2 will be Cameron’s next project and that it will be shot back-to-back with Avatar 3. Although screenplays for the sequels have yet to be written, there are some factions of the Internet rumor mill that seem to believe the first sequel will take place entirely underwater.

Empire recently caught up with Jon Landau, one of the Avatar franchise’s producers, while he was out promoting Avatar‘s upcoming Extended Collector’s Edition. Landau revealed that the oceans of Pandora will indeed be featured ...

Click to continue reading ‘Avatar’ Producer Addresses Sequel Rumors

James Cameron continues to push the envelope of technology. See what revolutionary advancements the director plans for 'Avatar 2 & 3'.

Maybe if James Cameron spent less time creating state-of-the-art technology to present unprecedented cinema, he’d have more movies on his résumé. Then again, if he wasn’t so innovative we would still be stuck in a dark age where 3D movies are just a gimmick (well…) and “Pandora” is just an online radio station.

We recently learned that Cameron will shoot Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 back-to-back. But now he has revealed that groundbreaking 3D imagery is just not enough for the story he wants to tell.

Cameron is working on two revolutionary technologies that may actually change the industry forever. We said that before with his 3D technology, but 3D is still restricted to specific genres – not that it has to be.

20th Century Fox has officially announced that James Cameron has decided that his next projects will be the (to put it mildly) highly-anticipated sequels, Avatar 2 and Avatar 3.

Cameron announced his plans last week to shoot the Avatar sequels back-to-back, but said he was still uncertain as to whether he would take on another project before returning to Pandora – not so surprisingly, he has decided to do the latter first.

Here’s the official word from Fox Entertainment Chairmen Jim Gianopulos and Tom Rothman:

“‘Avatar’ is not only the highest grossing movie of all time, it is a created universe based on the singular imagination and daring of James Cameron, who also raised the consciousness of people worldwide to some of the greatest issues facing our planet.
Screen Rant‘s Roth Cornet attended a Discussion/Q & A session with James Cameron and Avatar producer Jon Landau last night and learned a bit more about the plans for both Avatar 2 and a threequel, which we’ll dub Avatar 3 for now.

Cameron confirmed the rumor that Avatar 2 & 3 will be shot back-to-back and admitted that he has not yet decided whether or not to tackle those sequels next or take on another project first.

While reports were in last month that Cameron is developing a True Lies TV show, the Oscar-winning filmmaker revealed at the Q & A panel that he is not actually involved with the project.
We reported that James Cameron’s Avatar is getting an epic home video re-release this winter with the Avatar Extended Collector’s Edition, which will feature loads of special features including a new cut of the film that is nearly twenty minutes longer, almost an hour of deleted scenes, and enough behind-the-scenes and making of featurettes to keep you occupied for an entire weekend.

Actor Stephen Lang, who famously portrayed Avatar‘s villain, Col. Miles Quaritch, was on hand at the 2010 New York Comic-Con to discuss the Avatar Collector’s Edition, and we got a chance to speak with him.

James Cameron wowed audiences with high-flying 3D action in Avatar – many of the film’s premiere action scenes were set in the clouds of Pandora, the Hallelujah Mountains, or on the back of Banshees.

However, it’s looking increasingly likely that, as we reported back in April, Avatar 2 will also showcase the oceans of Pandora.

With the upcoming re-release of James Cameron’s Avatar only a few weeks away, there’s been renewed interest in every last morsel of information regarding Avatar 2. Cameron has previously indicated that the sequel will delve into regions of Pandora unexplored in the first film (specifically the planet’s oceans) and that he has no intentions of rushing into it.

Despite the fact that Avatar 2 is still several years away, it turns out it might not be too soon to start speculating over Avatar 3 as well.

Avatar director, James Cameron, isn’t slowing down. Even after spending ten years creating the most successful film of all time, Cameron is hopping right back onto the pre-production horse – with the intention of releasing his next film in “three to four years.”

The blockbuster director hasn’t been shy about the possibility of Avatar 2 but don’t expect any official sequel announcements any time soon.

Box-office maestro James Cameron sat down with the LA Times this week and spilled the beans on several bits of Avatar-related news, including more information on his plans with Avatar 2 and his planned theatrical re-release of Avatar at the end of this summer.

Among other tidbits, Cameron acknowledged that in Avatar 2 he plans to take audiences beyond the lush, exotic rain forests of Pandora and explore the alien world even further.

As Cameron put it himself:

Avatar co-producer Jon Landau (who also produced Cameron’s other big hit, Titanic) talked recently with Coming Soon about Avatar 2 and revealed some information about the future special edition Blu-Ray releases of Avatar as well.

Now, let’s be honest — at this point Avatar has grossed over $2.7 billion in theaters worldwide, so it’s silly for anyone connected to the film to pretend that 20th Century Fox executives aren’t going to harangue them night and day to make certain a sequel happens.

Landau, however, insists for now that most of the pressure the Avatar filmmakers are under is self-imposed which, to be fair, sounds reasonable. After all, they are the ones who will be ultimately responsible for Avatar 2 being as good, better, or worse than the original.

On the subject of sequels and James Cameron, Landau ...

Click to continue reading Jon Landau Talks Avatar 2 Status & Avatar DVD/Blu-ray

Zoe Saldana, star of sci-fi mega-hits Star Trek and Avatar was at WonderCon and talked a bit about both Star Trek 2 and Avatar 2. Hear what 'The Losers' star had to say

The fact that sequels to both last year’s Star Trek reboot and the mega-hit Avatar are in the works was pretty much a no-brainer after both films were well-received critically and together grossed over $1 billion in the U.S. alone. For now, it’s a question of when we’ll see the sequels, not if.

Well, MTV News caught up with Zoe Saldana at WonderCon over the weekend and found out a little bit of information on the progress of both projects. According to Saldana, shooting on the Star Trek sequel will likely commence soon “from what I hear, unless [director J.J. Abrams], who’s always full of surprises, is pulling us.” It’s nothing definite, but it supports Simon Pegg’s recent comments that the crew of the Enterprise will be back ...

Click to continue reading Zoe Saldana Talks Star Trek 2 & Avatar 2

James Cameron reveals details on the expanded 'Avatar' DVD/Blu-ray release coming in November, and a time line for a sequel.

Only ten days ago we told you about Fox’s curious plans to release the DVD of Avatar sans special features in April. Now, James Cameron reveals some unprecedented plans for the four-disc set that will be released in November.

Hollywood Reporter was at the press conference, where the director spoke about DVD features and a small, but informative comment on a potential Avatar sequel.

It would seem that some technology can still impress Cameron, as he has begun to indulge in Blu-ray’s capabilities. For the November release, he plans to include not only the original film, but a couple of scenes that didn’t make the final cut, along with artwork for scenes that were never finished.

There will also be a feature where you can watch a scene being filmed and compare it to fully rendered ...

Click to continue reading Cameron Talks ‘Avatar’ 4-Disc DVD/Blu-ray Set & Sequel Details
