Gareth Edwards' 'Godzilla' reboot is getting a rewrite, while the 'Asteroids' movie has secured a screenwriter in the form of Evan Spiliotopoulos (Snow White and the Huntsman).

Two high-profile sci-fi projects have landed new writing talent: Legendary Pictures’ Godzilla franchise revamp, which will be helmed by Gareth Edwards – and Asteroids, an adaptation of the classic Atari arcade game that (despite previous rumors to the contrary) will not be directed by Roland Emmerich.

David S. Goyer‘s earlier draft of the Godzilla screenplay will be getting a rework by a little-known, but increasingly-popular, scriber. A writer whose career is (likewise) on the up-and-up is going to be taking on the Asteroids movie.

Heat Vision says that Max Borenstein has been hired on to refine Goyer’s script for Godzilla, which will attempt to not follow in the footsteps of Emmerich’s woebegone 1998 Godzilla movie – and instead, successfully return the titanic lizard to his historical roots, while also updating him for ...

Click to continue reading ‘Godzilla’ Reboot and ‘Asteroids’ Movie Snag New Writers

Director Roland Emmerich expects to begin shooting his next sci-fi flick, 'Singularity' in Spring 2012. However, he will not be helming the 'Asteroids' arcade game movie.

Independence Day filmmaker Roland Emmerich has been indicating for a while now that he wants to take a break from destroying the planet after his end-all disaster movie 2012. However, that didn’t prevent rumors from circulating about how he might get back into the disaster business by helming the Asteroids arcade game movie next.

Word from Emmerich himself is that he’s chosen to pass on directing the Asteroids adaptation for Universal. He instead expects to soon begin production on his mystery sci-fi project, Singularity, which was acquired by Sony earlier this summer.

Emmerich and his 10,000 B.C./2012 co-scriber Harald Kloser are collaborating again on Singularity – the title of which can refer to either a black hole or the point where artificial intelligence exceeds human intelligence. Judging by Emmerich’s recent comments, it’s the latter, in this ...

Click to continue reading Roland Emmerich Talks ‘Singularity’; Not Directing ‘Asteroids’ Movie

Hollywood has a hard time making great video game movies & we know why: They're picking the wrong games. Here are our suggestions for some ridiculous game to movie prospects.

“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”. – Albert Einstein

Mr. Einstein could have very well been talking about Hollywood and all of the video game movies turds it has squeezed out in the past 27 years. Some people incorrectly think the wretched Super Mario Brothers kicked off the video game movie trend in 1993 but actually it started way back in 1984 with the thriller Cloak & Dagger, based off the Atari game, starring a young Henry Thomas (E.T.) and Dabney Coleman.

Regardless of which year we start from, there have been dozens of movies made from video games and, although some have come close (Mortal Kombat, Tomb Raider), NONE have actually been good. There have been some financially successful video game films but a large box office draw ...

Click to continue reading 1001 Ridiculous (but Possible) Upcoming Video Game Movies

One of the more, “What the hell are they thinking?!” pieces of news that has come out in recent months was that they are developing a big-screen adaptation of the classic arcade game, Asteroids. It’s just one of many classic properties set to be given the movie treatment, but also one of the most miffing as to why they’re even doing it.

Just what the heck is this going to be about?!

Well IGN recently spoke with producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers, G.I. Joe) who attempts to explain the direction they’re taking the Asteroids movie. “But it’s just a small triangle that shoots space rocks,” I hear you say. Well, not according to the producer:

“It’s funny because people say there’s nothing in the game, but that’s not entirely right… I was attracted to Asteroids, plain and simple, ...

Click to continue reading Producer Explains Asteroids Movie Plot

It seems we’re just going to have to get used to the fact that Hollywood is adapting all sorts of beloved properties from our childhoods – everything from toys, to board games and video games. Today we get the news that Universal has bought the rights and are developing a movie based on the classic Atari arcade game, Asteroids.

That’s right, even the arcade isn’t a safe haven…

Universal recently won a four-way studio bidding war for the film rights to the ’70s/’80s Asteroids arcade game. Matthew Lopez, who has penned the scripts for Race to Witch Mountain, Bedtime Stories and the upcoming Sorcerer’s Apprentice, has been hired by Universal to write the script. Although no director has been attached as of yet, Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers, G.I. Joe) will produce.
