‘American Reunion’: The Original Characters Then & Now

It’s been thirteen years since the vulgar teen comedy American Pie exploded onto movie screens at the end of the 90’s. Since then, two sequels– featuring many of the original characters– were released in theaters, and a few wannabe Pies were sent directly to DVD.

Arriving in theaters today is the eagerly-anticipated sequel American Reunion (read our review), which reunites most of the original cast. It’s the first film in nearly a decade to feature the immature and mischievous motley crew. With that in mind, we decided to look back at these characters over the past films and discuss how they have matured or–in Stifler’s case–failed to grow up over the span of years.

If you were in high school (as I was) in the late ’90s / early ’00s, American Pie was a defining piece of cinema. Not only did it mirror (with unnerving accuracy) the teen angst surrounding sex and sexuality at the time, it also ushered in the era of the R-rated, coming-of-age raunch-comedy sub-genre – a mix of explicit humor and genuine sentiment that has been imitated again and again in films like Superbad, Knocked Up - or any movie that’s even loosely connected with Judd Apatow and his gang of collaborators.

The original cast of the outrageous, generation-defining comedy American Pie will reunite after nearly a ten year absence so that audiences may once again connect and check in with Jim, Michelle, Stifler, Finch and the gang. American Reunion finds the group of misfits well into their respective adult lives and all that that implies: marriage, kids, mortgages and for some, less-than-amazing bosses.

But it is more than the kids of the class of 99′ who gained our hearts when the first film was released. ‘American Reunion’ Red-Band Trailer: All Grown Up, Still Raunchy at Heart

For those who were in high school in the late ’90s / early ’00s (as I was), American Pie was, essentially, the coming-0f-age comedy flick of our generation. In that sense, the proposition of American Reunion comes as a mixed bag that is one part sweet nostalgia, and one part fear that this new chapter – which reunites the cast of the original film – will be something more akin to the lackluster third film, American Wedding, or the string of reprehensible straight-to-DVD spinoffs that have carried the franchise name in the new millennium.

Today’s red-band trailer for American Reunion has a lot to prove, then; namely, that this movie can still provide the great mix of raunch and sentiment that the original did.

New ‘Battleship’ and ‘American Reunion’ Featurettes

Here’s a mismatched pair for you: the upcoming adaptation of the Hasbro board game Battleship, as helmed (pun intended) by Peter Berg (Hancock) – and the fourth theatrically-released installment in the American Pie franchise, American Reunion, as written and directed by the guys responsible for the Harold & Kumar franchise (Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg).

There are new featurettes out for both these films, which will be hitting theaters over the next couple of months. ‘American Reunion’ Trailer Has More Heart & Less Raunch

Previous red-band American Reunion trailers have focused on selling the film as yet another healthy dose of naughty deeds and awkward sex humor served up as only the American Pie franchise can; whereas the all-audiences promos have been relatively tame in comparison, emphasizing the heartfelt drama and character dynamics that helped make the previous films popular with moviegoers (at least, those released in theaters).

The new full-length U.S. trailer for American Reunion doesn’t stray from that path, featuring more scenes where the American Pie gang remember the good ol’ days and reconnect with one another – with the occasional raunchy bit (like Stifler relieving himself in some punk teenagers’ water cooler) thrown in for good measure.

When you disclude the numerous direct-to-DVD American Pie spinoff movies, about nine years will have passed between the last official installment in the raunchy comedy franchise (American Wedding) – and the release of the fourth chapter, appropriately titled American Reunion.

The newly-released red band teaser for Reunion is less a full preview – and more simply a chopped-up version of a scene that contains (what else) awkward humor and low-brow sex gags. Then again, would you expect it to feature anything else?

“What box office slump?” was the question Fast Five asked this weekend. The fifth installment in the Fast and the Furious franchise bested all of its predecessors, including 2009′s record-breaking Fast & Furious, by opening with an estimated $83.6 million gross in the U.S. That helped raise the overall American box office revenue for the weekend – which marked a 50% gain over this same period last year.

Most fans of the American Pie series don’t have very nice things to say about the recent string of direct-to-DVD spin-offs, but you can thank their commercial success for leading to a renewed interest in a fourth theatrical outing (I guess they ran out of plausible ways to shoehorn a new Stifler into each installment).

Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott and Eugene Levy have all signed on to return for the fourth installment of the American Pie franchise, which has now been titled, American Reunion.

Biggs played the lead character of Jim Levenstein in the original American Pie trilogy, and Levy played his father. Scott of course played the now-iconic Steve Stifler, a role which first made the actor famous.

Original Cast Members Returning for ‘American Pie 4′

We had the chance to chat with Craig Perry, the producer behind the American Pie and Final Destination franchises, and get the scoop on what may be happening next for Stifler, “Band Camp,” Levenstein, and the rest of the American Pie gang.

Most notably, the return of several key characters for American Pie 4.

The producer had not originally intended for American Pie to become the lasting franchise that it is:

“When we were making American Pie, we would watch the dailies and say ‘ohh, it might make 30 million!’ You never really know. You just sort of know when things are working, and are grateful that they are working. It is hard to make any movie really, more to make one that actually works.”

Harold & Kumar Creators Directing American Pie 4

Back in February we reported on the news that Universal was looking to bring back the American Pie franchise from the bottomless pit of straight-to-DVD releasing and release American Pie 4 in theaters. Although at the time the studio declined to comment on the development of the project, we did hear word that a lot of the original cast members were highly interested in returning to the franchise (although no one had actually signed on).

We also learned that Universal was poised to hire Harold & Kumar writers, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, to write the American Pie 4 script. Now we learn that not only are they writing the movie but they will also direct it. The news comes from Risky Business.

‘American Pie’ Back On the Big Screen?

Fans of the very successful American Pie franchise will be jumping up and down at the latest news that Universal is planning on bringing the franchise back to the big-screen with American Pie 4. And this ain’t just hopeful speculation from a fan of the series; the studio has already tapped a couple of writers to pen the script.

After hearing word of AP4 back in Fall 2008, we now have confirmation and more details on it: LA Times is reporting that Universal is poised to hire Harold and Kumar screenwriters, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, to write a script for American Pie 4 (as it’s being called for the time being).
