While comic book movie titans like The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises are hogging the spotlight, there are several other high-profile Summer 2012 prequels, sequels, and adaptations vying for the moviegoing public’s attention on a daily basis. Meanwhile, a smaller production like Riddick (a.k.a. Riddick 3) continues to make headlines – thanks to the efforts of its star, Vin Diesel – even though it’s not due out until next year.

Today, we have a combination of new official stills and higher-definition versions of images previously available online, from 2012 titles like Prometheus, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and G.I. New ‘Prometheus’ Pic Reveals Space Jockey Suits

That Ridley Scott’s Prometheus will somehow touch on the backstory of the giant creature known as the Space Jockey from Alien is no secret, at this point. Even if the director hadn’t already confirmed as much, the film’s official teaser trailer features distinct glimpses of what appear to be a very Jockey-like creature (click here for our complete Prometheus image gallery).

Similarly, two Jockey-like suits are also visible in the background of the latest image from Prometheus; in addition, some unofficial (and unconfirmed) model work for the film surfaced online recently, offering more insight into the nature of these extraterrestrial beings – or, at least, the structure of their helmets.

Sequels are definitely a mixed bag in terms of quality, but one of their advantages is an audience’s immediate connection and empathy towards a familiar and (hopefully) beloved character. No one really cares what’s inside the Temple of Doom or where the Holy Grail is hidden, they just want to go on another adventure with Indiana Jones.

Our interest and investment in these characters and their worlds often percolates in the years (or sometimes decades) between installments, and the opportunity to revisit them is often greeted with unmatched fervor – which makes it enormously disappointing as you watch a film unfold and realize that while the character on the big screen may look and sound the way you remember, something is… missing.

‘Prometheus’ Trailer Teases ‘Alien’ Style Sci-Fi Horror

20th Century Fox has really been milking fan interest in seeing the teaser trailer for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus this week, by releasing multiple trailer previews that offer brief glances at some actual footage from the film, but are by and large composed of short interviews with the esteemed filmmaker (Scott) talking about his third venture into the sci-fi genre – following in the footsteps of classic titles like Alien and Blade Runner.

Prometheus looks to combine sci-fi and horror tropes in a fashion similar to that of Alien; matter-of-fact, the new Prometheus teaser trailer plays out as a stylistic homage to the promo for Scott’s original 1979 film.

Ridley Scott Talks ‘Prometheus’ Philosophy, Space Jockey, & ‘Alien’

Back in June 2010, filmmaker Ridley Scott revealed that his (then) dual 3D Alien prequel movies would in part explore the history of the Space Jockey – ie. the giant skeletal creature whose punctured remains were discovered by the crew of the Nostromo in Scott’s original 1979 sci-fi/horror classic.

Co-screenwriter Damon Lindelof (the upcoming Star Trek sequel) thereafter retooled the project as a single “standalone” film, titled Prometheus; however, rumors and unconfirmed reports stating that the mysterious Jockey’s backstory would still be explored have continued to circulate ever since.

‘Prometheus’: Hi-Res Images & More ‘Alien’ Connection Talk

Ridley Scott’s much-speculated-about Prometheus has been making headlines (in good and bad ways) of late, thanks to a bootlegged version of the film’s teaser trailer and scanned images from a recent issue of Entertainment Weekly being leaked online. The film’s theatrical preview is still expected to be released before 2011 draws to a close, and will likely show before one of the upcoming holiday’s seasons bigger titles.

We now have high-resolution, official versions of the aforementioned EW Prometheus pics, including a non-watermarked version of the (previously) second officially-released still frame from the film. Speculation about the ties between Ridley Scott’s upcoming return to the sci-fi genre, Prometheus, and his definitive sci-fi/horror genre classic, Alien, remains as rampant as ever. The director has revealed that the conclusion of his new film directly sets the stage for the events of his famed 1979 release, but other than that, official details on the matter are scarce.

Fans are still eagerly awaiting the release of an actual teaser trailer for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus – which, according to an early description, visually grounds viewers in a sci-fi universe that bears a strong resemblance to Scott’s 1979 sci-fi/horror film, Alien.

Scott recently provided a brief update on the status of his next directorial project, a new Blade Runner film (probably a sequel). He has also offered yet another tease of the Prometheus plot – along with a comment that suggests the movie will indeed serve as a semi-prequel that lays the narrative foundation for Alien… to some degree.

A lot of savvy moviegoers are eagerly awaiting Ridley Scott’s new sci-fi film, Prometheus, which will be hitting theaters next summer.

If you aren’t yet aware, the big deal with this flick (aside from the fact that it will bring Ridley Scott back to the sci-fi genre) is that it serves as a sort of semi-prequel to Scott’s now-classic film, Alien. Before Ridley Scott takes audiences on a return trip to the Blade Runner universe, he will transport viewers back to the same realm as the Alien franchise with Prometheus – which remains, by and large, a mysterious project.

20th Century Fox released an official synopsis for Prometheus back around the start of July 2011, but the plot summary revealed little explicit information that wasn’t already implied by the film’s title – a reference to the Greek titan who stole fire from the gods – and Scott’s previous statement about how the project tells “the story of creation, the gods, and the man who stood against them.”

Neither Emma Stone nor Death itself could stop Rise of the Planet of the Apes from snagging the box office crown a second time this weekend. The popular prequel dropped about 49% from its opening for an estimated $27 million take and a $104.4 million total. Just the other day, a supposed Prometheus plot outline hit the Web, revealing a potential storyline that (essentially) gelled with Scott’s previous claims that his film is “the story of creation, the gods, and the man who stood against them.”

There’s been a lot of back-and-forth about what precisely Ridley Scott’s Prometheus is – Is it an Alien prequel? A totally original sci-fi film with the DNA of the Alien films? A film that exists inside of the Alien universe but otherwise doesn’t relate?

Since the film’s announcement, and despite Scott’s insistence to the contrary, there has been report after report indicating the iconic, double-mouthed “Xenomorphs” would be featured prominently in Prometheus . At this point, fans are likely growing weary of the endless speculation surrounding Prometheus and its connection to the Alien franchise.

Despite the fact that several cast members have confirmed the film is indeed linked to the original 1979 classic in some manner, director Ridley Scott initially tried to downplay their relationship to one another.

Scott instead discussed the plot in the broadest of strokes, explaining that Prometheus was an original story that dealt with “the story of creation, the gods and the man who stood against them.” Since then, various insiders close to the production have leaked several major plot points which indicate that the film might have more in common with its predecessors than Scott would have us believe.
