New ‘Prometheus’ Featurettes Focus on Logan Marshall-Green & Ridley Scott’s Vision

Hollywood may have a questionable obsession with prequels right now, but Ridley Scott’s Prometheus looks to be one of the better ones on the horizon. The film aims to expand the mythology of the Alien franchise, explore provocative questions about the beginnings of human existence, and include narrative threads that link it directly to Scott’s 1979 sci-fi/horror classic (at least, during the last eight minutes).

Part of the way Prometheus seeks to accomplish said task(s) is by doing more than just redressing the characters and plot of Alien under the pretense that it’s offering additional, substantial insight on the events of its predecessor (The Thing prequel, looking at you…).

Back to the Future: Hollywood’s Fascination with Prequels

The release date for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus is looming, and the marketing materials won’t have you know it, but the film is a prequel to Scott’s 1979 film, Alien. The term “prequel” is something of a dirty word in Hollywood these days, and therefore, Scott refers to the film as having “strands of Alien‘s DNA”. Okay, so that clears things up.

The notion of the prequel doesn’t just show Hollywood’s dearth of originality – it also illustrates that they have little faith in their audience. We can no longer just imagine that characters had lives before they appeared onscreen – now those pre-lives also have to be shown. It’s the cinematic equivalent of meeting someone for the first time and then telling them your life story up until that moment.

Today’s batch of Prometheus goodies covers all the bases, as far as promotional material is concerned. That includes: a new featurette focusing on Weyland Industries representative Meredith Vickers (Charlize Theron), an interview where Idris Elba discusses such topics as his character, Captain Janek, and working with a seasoned filmmaker like Scott – and a new screenshot, depicting David (Michael Fassbender) exploring the mysterious “Space Map” featured in previous images released from the Alien spinoff/prequel.

Fox’s extended trailer for Prometheus provided much food for thought about the film, including questions about exactly what Theron’s character’s priorities are. Obviously, the latest featurette doesn’t spill the beans (entirely), but Vickers is certainly an interesting specimen. If any one member of the titular spacecraft’s crew seems to have a hidden agenda – among other potential secrets (could she actually be an android?) ...

‘Prometheus’ Roundup: New Viral Video, Images and Damon Lindelof Twitter Q&A

There are only three weeks left until Ridley Scott’s Prometheus launches here in the States – though people in certain regions of Europe and Russia will be able to see the film a week earlier.

As the countdown to Scott’s much buzzed-about Alien spinoff/prequel continues, we can offer a handful of new images – that include conceptual painting depictions of such picturesque visuals as the “star field/star map” from Prometheus, along with the titular spacecraft’s arrival on a distant alien world. To top it off, there’s yet another cool viral video to watch, plus a bit more insight on the film from co-screenwriter Damon Lindelof.

‘Prometheus’ Extended Featurette & ‘Men in Black 3′ Behind-the-Scenes Clip

Moviegoers in the mood for some light-weight sci-fi entertainment will get just that when Men in Black III hits theaters later this month. Those looking for something with more intellectual substance and genuine 3D eye-candy (as opposed to the MIB threequel’s post-converted effects), will have to wait an extra couple weeks for Ridley Scott’s Alien prequel/spinoff, Prometheus.

Today, we have the latest featurettes for both of these new installments in sci-fi tentpole franchises (Men in Black and Alien, respectively). As it were, these clips perfectly illustrate the difference in tone and content between the two films.

‘Prometheus’ Photo Gallery: Attractive Astronauts On An ‘Alien’ World

We’ve turned a corner and are headed down the final stretch (re: one more month to go) before the theatrical premiere of Sir Ridley Scott’s new addition to the Alien franchise, a prequel/spinoff titled Prometheus. Despite having seen some fairly revealing footage – and read commentary from the cast and crew about the film’s high-minded sci-fi themes, there’s still a good deal of secrecy being retained around this project.

In many regards, the mystery surrounding Scott’s film – which sees him return to the sci-fi/horror sub-genre that he lay the foundation for, with the original Alien back in 1979 – remains as thickly layered as that surrounding this summer’s third (and final) major tentpole release, The Dark Knight Rises.

‘Prometheus’ Secures R Rating; del Toro Compares the Film to ‘Mountains of Madness’ [Updated]

[UPDATE: Fox has officially confirmed that Prometheus is Rated R.]

The Avengers has obliterated U.S. box office records, setting the stage for a lucrative summer, chock-full of heavily-anticipated titles. As it were, the next big “event” movie of the summer is Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, which sees the filmmaker finally back on Alien turf (literally).

Anyone who was worrying that Scott’s symphony of sci-fi/horror could end up “watered down” to a PG-13 Rating can relax now: the film has (seemingly) been confirmed as Rated R. Meanwhile, Guillermo del Toro has spoken out about the similarities between Prometheus and At the Mountains of Madness – and why it’s bad news for his long-planned adaptation of that H.P. Lovecraft story.

Besides being an Alien prequel of sorts, Prometheus has fast become one of the most highly-anticipated films of summer, particularly here at Screen Rant. Besides the fact that it’s Ridley Scott’s long-awaited return to sci-fi, it also looks massively creepy and weird, thanks to the sparse, mysterious footage we’ve seen so far.

A new international trailer just hit the Internet that features more revealing footage than any of the previous trailers. Be advised – if you’d prefer to watch this film in June untarnished by any SPOILERS, this may not be your kind of trailer.

‘Prometheus’ Featurette: Ridley Scott Heads Back to ‘Alien’ Territory

At this point, we’re really just waiting to find out: is Prometheus for certain going to be a revival of the disturbing sci-fi horror featured in Alien, as envisioned by Sir Ridley Scott, that early promos have sold it as being – not to mention a return to form for the filmmaker following a mixed reception for his last couple of pictures (Robin Hood, Body of Lies)? Or could this flick ultimately prove to be one of this biggest disappointments in 2012?

Going solely off the viral video campaign and trailer footage for Prometheus, it’s easy to assume that there’s no way this film won’t be a mind-blowing viewing experience. ‘Prometheus’ Russian Trailer & Viral Video with Michael Fassbender

The Russian-dubbed theatrical trailer for Sir Ridley Scott’s Prometheus (see above) is unfortunately one of those “blink and you’ll miss the new footage” promos. If nothing else, though, that footage from the Alien-verse-set tale of makind’s journey to a mysterious (and, ultimately, sinister) ancient extraterrestrial world continues to impress – regardless of what language the characters speak – is testament to the power of the film’s darkly beautiful imagery.

For those of you who don’t find the sound of apprehensive dialogue more or less unnerving when spoken in a non-English language, we also have a new viral video for Prometheus – one that takes on the form of a pseudo-advertisement for the “state-of-the-art” android David (Michael Fassbender), who joins a team of humans on said expedition to check out the relics of an ancient civilization on a faraway alien planet.

Mysterious (And Creepy) New ‘Prometheus’ Images

Recent stills and images from this summer’s Prometheus have offered fans of Ridley Scott’s science fiction work a few more glimpses and teases of the characters, lore and tech of the film, but the story remains a mystery.

Twentieth Century Fox held an event in London recently where they premiered 20 minutes of footage from the film and from that preview came a few more mysterious new images, animations and a detailed diagram of the Prometheus starship featured prominently in the Prometheus trailers thus far.

First up is the Prometheus ship from Weyland Corp which the crew uses to travel from Earth to the mysterious planet discovered from ancient star maps found on ruins here on Earth. It’s conceptual art with six key components labelled, each likely called out for a specific reason related to scenes in the film.

Few things give film geeks (us included) more pleasure than being able to pore over still frames from upcoming blockbusters – and, in the process, (over)analyze everything from the costumes on display to the angle the photos were shot at.

Excitement is sky-high right now for director Ridley Scott’s return to the realm of horrifying science-fiction with Prometheus. There’s a sliding scale of horror, with regards to the films in today’s TV spot roundup. We have Tim Burton’s latest piece of ghoulish comedy with Dark Shadows, a genuinely Gothic fairy tale re-telling with Snow White and the Huntsman – and a pure descent into sci-fi dread and physical horror with Ridley Scott’s Prometheus.

Beautiful New ‘Prometheus’ Images Emerge From Viral Sites

Fans of the Alien franchise, sci-fi movies or anything Ridley Scott related have had special couple of weeks thanks to Twentieth Century Fox’s marketing push for Prometheus. After reporting that Guy Pearce had been cast in the film last year, we finally saw what he was really working: the viral campaign which kicked off with a TED lecture video starring Pearce as Peter Weyland in the year 2023.

This paved the way for viral sites containing mysteries that fans must solve and uncover, the first of which was the space map still from two weeks ago. Since then, the official side of the marketing plan shared the must-watch IMAX and international trailers, followed today by a pair of new images again found through the viral sites.
