Empire was talking with director Ridley Scott recently about his return to Alien, the sci-fi plus horror film that first catapulted him to fame. Earlier this year, the news broke that Scott would be coming back for a prequel chapter to Alien, which would be set long before the mess-yourself-terror of the 1979 original.

Ever since that news was confirmed, Alien fans have all been wondering what “Sir Ridley” had in mind for the prequel. Thanks to Empire, we now have at least some idea of what we can expect.

Said Scott:

“It’s a brand new box of tricks…We know what the road map is, and the screenplay is now being put on paper. The prequel will be a while ago. It’s very difficult to put a year on Alien, but [for example] if Alien was towards the end of this century, then the prequel story will take place thirty years prior.”

“I never thought I’d look forward to a sequel…But a prequel is kind of interesting. I’m looking forward to doing that.”

Many people have also been wondering if this prequel was going to explain the mysterious scene in the original Alien where the crew members found a non-human pilot crash landed on planet LV-426 with his chest burst out. According to Scott, the prequel will have a “human focus,” though what that means exactly is anyone’s guess at this point.

Ian Holm's Ash set the stage for an Alien Prequel

In Alien, Ash (the android character played by Ian Holm), was missioned by the Mega-corporation Weyland-Yutani to bring the alien back alive. It was (semi) explained in the film that the corporation had made prior (unsuccessful) attempts to capture the alien; between that reference, and the logical deduction that a human exploration party must’ve made first contact with the aliens at some point for the mega corp to even know of their existence, let’s just say there is a lot of fertile ground on which to build this prequel.

Last word we heard, Ridley Scott (at the insistance of 20th Century Fox) will be back to helm the film, working off a screenplay by Jon Spaihts. I feel confident in saying that there are a LOT of us out here eagerly anticipating seeing this particular prequel.

No word on when Alien 0 will be terrifying us in theaters. As stated by Scott, it’s currently in development.

Welcome to the second installment in Screen Rant’s Halloween lead-up series called “Horror Plus” – a feature which sets out to showcase one film that combines horror with another genre. It will basically serve as a review of the film at hand, explaining why it’s such a good example of genre merging.

In case you missed it, our first installment in the series was Horror Plus Comedy: Shaun of the Dead. Be sure to keep and eye out for other installments such as “Horror Plus Action” and “Horror Plus Thriller” in the coming weeks leading up to Halloween on October 31st.

There are many, many great choices I could have went with in the Horror Plus Sci-Fi category, and believe me it took me a while to pick just one (not picking the likes of The Thing and Scanners almost physically hurt…). But then it struck me, at least in my books, there is only ONE ultimate sci-fi film that blends itself into the horror genre so well, and that’s Ridley Scott’s masterpiece, Alien.

(The following may contain moderate SPOILERS)

In case you’re not familiar with this absolute classic (and if you aren’t, why are you still reading this and not off renting or even buying it?), the plot is as follows: The crew on a mining ship (the Nostromo) receive an SOS call from a nearby planet while heading back to Earth, and unable to ignore it, they decide to land on the planet and investigate. A few of the crew members head out onto the planet’s surface, only to find a hive colony of some strange and unknown creature. One of the creatures attaches itself to one of the crew member’s faces, and the crew make the mistake of allowing him, and subsequently the creature on board. Before long, things start to go from bad to worse for the crew when they start to realize they’re not alone on the ship.

Like all great genre mixing films, the blending of the two types is seamless. Alien never feels like it’s like two movies – sci-fi and horror – fighting against each other to be in the same two hour-plus runtime. But rather, it feels like they merge together very well to provide for two kinds of movies in one. A similar mixing of genres happened with the sequel, Aliens, this time helmed by the great James Cameron. And although that’s a fantastic film in its own right, I have to show my true hand and say that I think Scott’s original is the superior of the two.

The Nostromo crew members come across something very strange...

Although Alien is definitely not the first movie of its kind, it could definitely be described as a landmark in the sci-fi and horror genres. Setting a horror film on a ship in the middle of space where (as the tagline says) “No one can hear you scream,” was pure genius on the part of Dan O’Bannon (who co-wrote the story and the screenplay) and Ronald Shusett (who co-wrote the story). Undoubtedly, a lot of the success of Alien as a film that truly works as part of each of the sci-fi and horror genres comes down to director Ridley Scott (who originally wasn’t supposed to direct – O’Bannon was, FYI).

New to both genres (this only being his second directed feature after the war film, The Duellists), Scott brings what we now know is a masterful skill (when he picks the right projects…) of bringing a bit of depth to genres that in other hands might have felt a bit superficial. This is also down to the cast, which includes Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver, Ian Holm, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton and Yaphet Kotto. What’s important about a film which is essentially a bunch of people in close proximity for almost the entire movie, is that the comradery and chemistry between the actors is spot on. Thankfully that’s the case with Alien.

One of the major things that makes Alien stand out from most other films of its kind, is the fact that for most of the movie we don’t get to see the titular creature. It’s surely always there… somewhere… lurking in the shadows… waiting to pick off another one of the crew members. But the film shrewdly keeps the alien hidden from us, instead opting to build tension and an almost overwhelming sense of dread of what MIGHT be about to pop out.

However, whenever the main alien (or any of the other ones) do make an on-screen appearance, it is entirely shocking, mostly because of that mentioned build up of tension (as well as the unique, peculiar and genuinely frightening physical appearance of the creature(s)). This leads us to what I think is the highlight scene of the entire movie, when poor old John Hurt, who’s character was the unlucky one to get “face hugged” by the alien initially, starts to suddenly feel ill at the dinner table. Out of nowhere, lying with his back on the table, a disgusting, creepy alien creature bursts right out of his stomach (a representation of male’s fear of pregnancy and giving birth, perhaps?). Ever wondered why the reactions of the surrounding crew was so realistic? Well, that’s because before filming the scene, Scott and the production team didn’t let any of the cast (other than Hurt, of course) know exactly what was going to happen (they had some general idea) and they were told to just react naturally. One of the greatest scenes of any movie IMO, one that I shudder to even think of.

Something he ate?...

One thing that must be noted about Alien is it was really the first mainstream film to have the action hero be a female. For some reason it appeared unthinkable up until that point that a woman could be just as badass as a man when it comes to being the one who “saves the day.” Most people at Alien’s original release back in 1979 probably thought Tom Skerritt, captain of the Nostromo, was going to end up being the hero. But as we know, Sigourney Weaver’s badass Ellen Ripley (the part was originally written for a man, FYI) turned out to be one to fill those shoes and laid the way for many cinematic female heroes to come.

There’s plenty more to discuss about Alien, but I’ll leave that to you Screen Rant readers. I know most of you probably have, but I’ll ask anyway: Have you seen the original Alien? What are your thoughts on what I consider to be Scott’s masterpiece (yes, even more than Blade Runner)? Any favorite moments or memories of watching it (for the first time) that you’d like to share? Leave your thoughts and opinions below.

As stated, be sure to keep an eye out for more installments of the “Horror Plus” feature before Halloween, October 31st!

Morris, who got started in effects working with Stan Winston on the original Predator and Aliens movies, just received photos of the finished Predator(s) from his team in Los Angeles and says that they look “fantastic” and that the fans will be happy with the look of the Predator(s).

After Aliens vs. Predator and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem were released, fans weren’t all too happy with what was done to the look of their beloved, iconic Predator. What’s Morris’ angle that has him so confident?

”We wanted to have the Predator look as it did in the original film. We went back and looked at the original.”

Sure, it sounds so simple now, but two films completely ignored that philosophy and because of that thinking we received this monstrosity below:

This interview with Morris really made me feel confident in this project. Sure, Robert Rodriguez is involved, but I’ve come to put less significance in the whole “produced by” moniker than by the people actually, physically involved (Kevin Smith was a “producer” on Good Will Hunting). I’m glad to know that the person behind the decisions regarding the character design wants simply, as he says, “…to make sure we built them as Stan Winston did.”

Does this raise your hopes for the next Predator movie?

Predators will start filming soon with release in 2010.

Facehugger fanboys around the world cheered last week when Screen Rant reported that director Ridley Scott was taking over the reins of the upcoming Alien prequel from 20th Century Fox.

Previously, Scott had indicated he was interested in returning to the franchise only if he could bring back Sigourney Weaver as well. So, does that mean Weaver will be reprising her role as Alien ass-kicker Ellen Ripley? According to the 59 year old actress, the answer is no.

MTV caught up with Sigourney Weaver at Comic-Con to speak with her about returning to the franchise she helped make famous and her thoughts on an Alien prequel. Check out the video below.

I’ve always been a fan of Sigourney Weaver and I think her work in Alien and Aliens was fantastic. That being said, I can’t imagine her taking a role in an Alien prequel unless it were a small cameo. I mean, it’s a prequel. The events in the film are meant to precede the events of the original film. How could she fit into the plot in any logical way?

So far, we don’t know much about screenwriter Jon Spaihts’ script, but, now that we know the prequel won’t revolve around Ellen Ripley, we can start to ponder some potential plot details. Let’s start with the basics.

The first Alien movie focused on the crew of the towing spaceship Nostromo. During the film, we find out that Weyland-Yutani (the corporation in charge of the ship) wants the alien brought back alive, regardless of whether the crew lives or not. Might the prequel revisit the devious megacorporation and their earlier efforts to catch some xenomorphs?

Well, what do you think? Do you have any guesses as to the plot of the Alien prequel?

Well, Great Scott! That is no longer the case.

In space, no one can hear you scream, but it would appear that the 20th Century Fox finally heard fans of the Alien franchise because they have now hired original Alien director Ridley Scott to return to the helm for the next installment of the long-running sci-fi franchise.

The long-rumored sequel reboot prequel has been gestating since 1997’s Alien Resurrection (even with the Alien Vs Predator films being produced). Scott has often publicly pondered returning to the series, but only with original star Sigourney Weaver. However, this new movie is supposed to be a prequel to Scott’s own film and not a continuation of the series, so it would appear that Weaver won’t be involved - having said that, she recently re-teamed with her Aliens director, James Cameron, for Avatar, so never say never.

The original Alien followed the crew of the Nostromo as they responded to a distress signal from a ship on a distant planet (LV428). Once there, a member of the crew is attacked and an alien parasite (a face-hugger) is attached to his face. Soon the creature dies, but then the real horror begins…

Alien and its first sequel Alien are modern science fiction classics and even the lesser sequels (David Fincher’s Alien 3 and Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Resurrection) have some interesting visual flourishes and plot developments.

This Alien prequel will be written by Jon Spaihts.

Apparently, Spaihts’ pitch for the new film was so impressive that Scott jumped at the chance to direct. Now, the film could be quite a long way off as Scott has several films in development at the minute. He’s currently working on Robin Hood with Russell Crowe, and he has the Monoply film on the way, as well as a slew of producing duties. Add to this, he’s now 72 years old and it would appear that the British director might need a holiday or two.

With a bit of luck, Fox will put this new film on the fast track and we could see it within the next couple of years.

More on the Alien Prequel when we get it.

With The Taking of Pelham 123 in theaters this week, director/producer Tony Scott has been on the receiving end of A LOT of questions about the many blogged-about projects he is rumored to be attached to. Coming Soon and Cinema Blend in particular snagged some great stuff from the mouth of Mr. T Scott, including a few updates on the Alien prequel and The Warriors remake.

Courtesy of the Screen Rant Lifestyle Convenience Initiative, here’s a quick glance at the latest from Tony Scott.

 ALIEN PREQUEL

When a new Alien film was first announced, Ridley and Tony Scott were attached as producers with their protege (and possible future son-in-law) Carl Rinsch attached to direct. When details became clear that the new Alien was going to be a prequel to Ridley Scott’s 1979 classic, suddenly 20th Century Fox was reportedly not-so-sure about Rinsch at the helm, supposedly asking for Ridley himself to take the reigns (Alien fans are currently holding their breaths in anticipation).

Here’s a bit of what Tony Scott had to dish about the Alien prequel:

“I don’t want to get caught in the middle. We’re in process on that, but I don’t have enough information to bring it to this table, but we’re going to make it.”

Ok, so it sounds like the whole director issue is getting sort of kind of fought out worked out right now. We’ll see how it plays.

For more from Tony Scott about the Alien prequel, hop on over to Coming Soon.

.

THE WARRIORS

The Warriors is a cult classic (”Can you dig it?”) and since the news surfaced that Tony Scott was going to be helming a remake of the 1979 original, The Warriors has been slowly drifting onto my radar screen. Here’s the deal so far with the remake: Out is the story of a gang framed for murder, on the run back to their home turf in Coney Island; in is the visionary story of a gang framed for murder, on the run back to their home turf in Venice Beach. See, that’s how remakes need to be done – you gotta switch it up!

Here’s what Tony Scott has planned :

…It’s almost like 9/11, bodies coming off, it just goes ballistic. Then these guys have got to get from the Vincent Thomas back to Venice, through all these different gang territories. And it becomes anarchy. The gangs are meeting, they’re meeting for a truce. Just like they were in the original. But once that truce is broken, they go back to their turf. And our guys, the Warriors, they’ve got to get back to their turf, back to Venice.”

Not to fear Warriors fans, Cyrus is still in there. For more with Tony Scott talking all the crazy things he has planned for The Warriors remake, hop on over to Cinema Blend.

Be sure to read through the interviews on both sites, as Tony Scott goes on to talk about a variety of other projects he has in the works, including a sequel to the 1983 David Bowie vampire/goth cult-classic, The Hunger; an adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s famous journalistic memoir about the infamous Hell’s Angels, and even a project based on the true story of a Jersey mob who tried to take over the construction business in Germany, called Potsdamer Platz (apparently that’s the name of a train station in Berlin, and they’re already thinking of losing the name. Smart move).

That’s a pretty busy list there for Tony Scott. Which project looks good to you?

It was announced last month that another Alien movie was in the works, with initial word stating that it would be a reboot. However, not long after that announcement, word came that the next Alien would be a prequel and not a reboot as previously reported. On top of that, brothers Ridley (who directed the original Alien) and Tony Scott were to be attached as producers, with commercials director Carl Erik Rinsch at the helm.

However, even though the project still seems to be a-go, the big guns at 20th Century Fox are reportedly not happy with Ridley not directing the Alien prequel.

The Scott brothers may have given their blessing to Rinsch to direct the Alien prequel, but apparently Fox isn’t so keen on the idea. From Entertainment Weekly (via The Playlist) – from a report yet to be published online – comes the word that Fox isn’t “interested in green lighting the project unless [Ridley] Scott directs himself.” And since Fox (not the Scott brothers) own the rights, this disagreement with the choice of director presents a little bit of an issue, I’d say!

And the situation only gets more awkward: not only is Carl Rinsch part of RSA Pictures (a Scott brothers’ production company), he is also (allegedly) romantically involved with Ridley’s daughter Jordan. I guess, then, the comment made by Tony Scott about Rinsch being “one of the family,” wasn’t just referring to the business side of things… How thick is blood compared to movie contracts?

Will Ridley Scott have to direct the Alien Prequel?

Although I would be okay with the idea of Rinsch directing the Alien prequel (check out his “Evolution of Technology” ad as proof he’s got talent), if I had the choice I would much rather have Ridley Scott directing again. After all, he was the one who gave us Alien in the first place, and if the movie is still moving forward as a prequel, then Ridley seems best fit to give us a look at what came before his original vision.

As fellow Screen Rant writer Kofi Outlaw said, a prequel to Alien could very easily ruin the mystery of just what the hell those aliens are exactly. But it’s a risk I’d personally be willing to take as a viewer, if it means we get a prequel and not a damn remake/reboot – or worse, another lackluster AVP-type spinoff.

What do you think about the apparent upset of Fox wanting Ridley Scott to direct the Alien prequel? Would you rather Ridley came back to the franchise? Or should some new blood (maybe Carl Rinsch?) have a go at it?

Hopefully the Alien prequel makes it to a release date.

It’s official!
Thank Collider reporter Steve ‘Frosty’ Weintraub, who caught up with Ridley Scott’s brother Tony Scott at the premiere of his new movie, The Taking of Pelham 123. The Scott brothers will co-produce the Alien prequel, and like any good producer, Tony was willing to feed the hype machine.

Here are some choice excerpts from the Collider interview with Tony Scott:

Collider: 20th Century Fox is talking about remaking or redoing the original Alien. What’s going on with that?

Tony Scott: Yes, Carl Rinsch is going to do the prequel to Alien. He’s one of our directors at our company.

Collider: …are you a little nervous about reengaging the franchise or are you excited.

Tony: I’m excited cause Ridley created the original and Carl Rinsch is one of the family.

Collider: When do you envision this film getting in front of cameras?

Tony: Hopefully the end of the year.

Collider: Will it be a summer of 2011 movie?

Tony: Honestly, I don’t know.

Again, thanks to Collider for snagging that exclusive – Alien fans have been going nuts about whether this next film was going to be a prequel or a remake! I’m an Alien fan and right now I can tell you that I’m breathing a bit easier knowing that one of sci-fi’s all-time classics isn’t going to suffer the indignity of a lackluster remake.

A prequel is something I am good with; it would be cool to see the Alien species being created, only to go on a rampage across the universe. There IS a potential downside, however: some of best monsters in sci-fi/horror are the ones whose origins are UNKNOWN. The dread of the unknown, in certain cases, is more frightening than the monster itself. In giving Alien a backstory, the filmmakers risk negating one of the greatest aspects of Ridley Scott’s original: its WTF?! factor.

Still, in the hands of the Scott Brothers and their protege Carl Rinsch, I have a feeling that this Alien prequel might just turn out ok. What do you think? Does an Alien prequel have a shot at greatness?

(Like Tony Scott said) No word yet on when the Alien Prequel will hit theaters.
Is someone actually seriously considering "rebooting" Alien? Or do they have something else in mind?

The Hollywood remake craze continues with the (bad) news that 20th Century Fox intends to remake/ reboot the Alien Franchise. Yes – you really read that correctly. In space no one can hear you scream. However, on Earth they can!

Bloody Disgusting is the first to break the news on the remake/reboot whose actual plot is still up in the air. It could be an origin story/ prequel to the original Sigourney Weaver Alien, or a total remake.

There’s still some light at the end of the tunnel though, as original Alien director Ridley Scott is involved in the project.

To some the original Alien film is a lauded classic in the Science Fiction genre and pretty much near untouchable as remake material. That doesn’t seem to worry Fox, who last year unmade remade the celebrated classic The Day The Earth Stood Still. The studio also sullied the Alien franchise with the dire Alien Vs Predator films earlier this decade.

Ridley Scott is involved in a producing capacity only along with his brother (and Scott Free partner) Tony Scott, as well as Michael Costigan. According to Bloody Disgusting the film will be directed by Carl Rinsch; apparently Rinsch is a commercials and music video director who has previously worked for Scott Free Productions. Could he be a Ridley Scott protégé?

At this point it doesn’t really matter – it’s still a bad idea. Hollywood (and 20th Century Fox in particular) seem to have a total lack of respect for the movies that they have in their back catalog. Remakes and reboots are the current rage – mainly because they have “brand name recognition”.

Fox, however, just seem to want the cash – they’ve had a stellar year so far producing sub-standard fare and the way they’ve treated franchises such as X-Men and The X-Files borders on insanity. And don’t even get me started on the above mentioned crappy remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still. Why can’t the studio make sequels to beloved franchises, rather than remake them for younger audiences or better still leave them alone?

It appeared that Fox might be making amends by hiring Robert Rodriguez to help drive the Predator franchise back to the big screen. A Schwarzenegger-starring sequel would be ideal, but we know why that can’t go down (always politics). Scott’s involvement in Alien is a major plus for this project – but why not have it as a sequel with Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley? I’m sure that Weaver would want to be involved if Scott was producing and fans of the original movies would be pretty excited by that.

If Indiana Jones, Rambo and Die Hard can return to our screens, then surely so can Ellen Ripley. Weaver has in the past discussed a new Alien project with Scott, so the relationship is still there. Heck, she’s even worked with James Cameron on Avatar - I’m sure the three of them could come up with a quick treatment for a fifth Alien film rather than a reboot.

As per usual this is all rumor right now, so there’s much that could change. Hopefully Weaver’s involvement is what will change, so let’s hope that fans of the franchise make enough noise to help get a fifth film off the ground rather than a remake!

More on the Alien prequel/remake/reboot when we get it – so get shouting folks!

Oh, please let it be prequel, I beg of you, Mr. Scott!

Now, this wasn’t Scott himself who came out and said this, but rather Fox Co-chairman Tom Rothman during an interview at the red carpet of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. I’m happy to see that this seems like a legit piece of information, even if it was announced by a surprisingly casual Rothman.

He’s what Rothman had to say:

“There’s been some talk. Ridley Scott, Ridley is right now working on Robin Hood, but I think he’s toying with the idea and that would be great for us. I mean, it’s always been a matter of, really, if you can get the originator to do it that would be the greatest thing, so I’ve got my fingers crossed, all of them.”

The interview, which was conducted by IESB, was done on video – it’s worth taking a look at as Rothman also talks about future projects including X-Men: First Class, Daredevil, Avatar and Predators (check the bottom of the post for the link).

As I hinted at above, I really, really hope that what Scott has in mind is a prequel and not a reboot. If it was a reboot, although it would be encouraging that the original director would be directing it again, it still kind of undermines what he did with the original, does it not? It would kind of feel like a “do-over,” if you will, that would essentially see him try to top the original.

A virtual impossibility, I’d imagine…

No, I sincerely hope that if he’s going to go back to it, that it’s a prequel. If it was some random director who’d never had anything to do with the franchise before who was stepping in to do a prequel, then I’d be upset. But since it’d be Scott who’d be involved, I see not only nothing wrong with a prequel, but I actually am very excited about the possibility.

Alien is one of those all-time classic movies that is as effective today as it was 30 years ago, and that’s the mark of a truly great piece of filmmaking. It has everything you could want in a movie of its type – shuddering suspense, genuinely effective horror, an iconic hero, a fantastic “bad guy,” – I really hope Scott keeps all that consistent if this prequel goes ahead.

Scott is undoubtedly one hell of a talented director; one of the best around when he’s on top form. He’s done his share of crap (Kingdom of Heaven and Hannibal, anyone?), no doubt, but so has just about every filmmaker. Besides, this was first “big” movie (no I’m not forgetting about The Duellists, so take that that as you will…) so it might bring out another A-game film from him.

At least I hope so…

I just wonder what direction Scott may go with it: Will he treat it as a sort of origin story explaining and showing just exactly how and where the aliens came about? Or will it be another simple case of humans happening across some pesky aliens and them trying to survive repeated attacks? I’d be fine either way, although an origin story would probably be the more interesting of the two.

What do you think of the notion of an Alien prequel or reboot? Do you think it’s a good idea, and which direction would you like to see Ridley Scott go with it?
