The nominations are out for the 37th Annual Saturn Awards and they include such favorites as 'Inception,' 'Harry Potter,' 'True Grit' and 'Shutter Island.' Read the full list of nominees here.

As we edge ever closer to the biggest movie award ceremony around, the Oscars, we have another set of nominations to mull over: The 37th Annual Saturn Awards.

While the Oscars, Golden Globes and the BAFTAs tend to recognize the more “serious” films (some would say in a way that is out of touch), award ceremonies like the Saturn Awards nominate films that average moviegoers would likely champion as their favorites of the year – not to mention the ceremony also recognizes the best TV shows and DVD release the year had to offer.

Last year the Saturn Awards were dominated by a little film called Avatar (you may have heard of it), but as you’ll see below fan favorite Inception dominates things this year with a whopping nine nominations, while other popular films ...

Click to continue reading Inception Leads 2011 Saturn Award Nominees

'The King's Speech' and 'The Social Network' won big at the BAFTA Film Awards. Can we expect something similar to happen at the Oscars?

The British Academy Film Awards – or as most Americans refer to them, “the British version of the Academy Awards” – were held last night. As one of the more respected entertainment awards shows, the BAFTA film awards tend to, but don’t always, predict the big winners for the subsequent Oscars, which will be held in two weeks’ time on February 27th.

In an unsurprising turn, Tom Hooper’s favored film, The King’s Speech, starring Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter, and Geoffrey Rush, and David Fincher’s The Social Network, starring Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield, were the big winners of the night.

Without further adieu, the 2011 BAFTA Film Awards went to:

For 68 years, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has been celebrating their favorites in film and television with the Golden Globe Awards.

Once again, the multifaceted and generally hilarious Ricky Gervais will be serving as host of tonight’s gala. While those in attendance will be filled with anticipation about whether or not they will take home the award in their chosen category, viewers at home will be anxiously waiting to see how far Gervais will push the comedic envelope with his monologue and numerous ad-libs throughout the night.

With 25 separate categories having to fit within tonight’s given time slot, something tells me that Gervais will be moving things along at a swift pace – all while sipping from his iconic glass a beer that always remains not-so-hidden beneath his podium.

-

Review

Hollywood studios always hope to attain one of the many tiny gold naked man statues handed out on Oscar night and even films that that are foremost exercises in style over substance stand a chance of doing just that. The 2011 Oscar nominations won’t be announced until January 25th, but the Academy has narrowed down its list of potential candidates to win the prize for eye-dazzling visual F/X.

Seven movies – Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, Hereafter, Inception, Iron Man 2, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, and TRON: Legacy - are still in the running to snag a nod for their effects work.
For 37 years, the People’s Choice Awards has been celebrating the fan favorites in film, television and music. In preparation for tonight’s awards ceremony, over 35 million votes were cast by the American public in hopes that their favorite film, television series, actor or musician will take home this coveted award.

For the second year in a row, the multifaceted Queen Latifah will be serving as host of this fanatical gala. With over 43 separate categories having to fit within the given timeslot, something tells me that Queen Latifah is going to be forced to move things along at a swift pace in order to fit each category within the 2-hour time-limit.

In our continuing series of year end look-backs, we take a look at what we think are the most disappointing movies of 2010. Take a look at our list and see if you agree.

Another year of movies has come and gone – and everyone is producing lists of their best and worst movies of the year. We have already unveiled what we thought were the 10 worst movies of 2010 and the top 10 movie moments of 2010 but we thought we would also do a list highlighting which movies we found to be the most disappointing.

While 2010 brought us its fair share of thrills, excitement, drama and laughs in such films as Inception, Kick-Ass, Black Swan and Toy Story 3 (to name but a few) the year inevitably brought us its fair share of disappointment, too.

NOTE: To be clear, this list is not representative of what we consider the worst that cinema had to offer in the past 12 months, ...

Click to continue reading The 5 Most Disappointing Movies Of 2010

When awards season rolls around every year there always seems to be a group of films that are tapped to pick up their share of the major awards. 2010 is no exception and this year the likes of Toy Story 3, Inception, The King’s Speech, The Social Network, Black Swan and The Fighter are among those which have won awards already and look likely to pick up some Oscars as well.

However, when it comes to the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and the Writers Guild of America (WGA), there are rules which often prohibit certain awards favorites from winning in some of the big categories offered by awards ceremonies.

Following the Oscars deeming the scores for Black Swan, True Grit and The Fighter ineligible ...

Click to continue reading Toy Story 3, The King’s Speech & More Ineligible For WGA Screenplay Awards

Celebrities Josh Duhamel, Katie Holmes, and Blair Underwood dragged themselves from the comfort of their beds early this morning to announce the nominations for this year’s other big cinematic awards, the Golden Globes.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has unveiled its nominations for the 68th annual Golden Globes and, like any year’s crop of nominees, there are a few surprise choices, some unexpected snubs, and a number of highly anticipated selections.

Leading the movie pack with seven nominations is the period drama The King’s Speech, which began to garner serious awards buzz back when it toured the festival circuit this past fall. David Fincher’s The Social Network has already snagged a handful of critic’s choice awards and secured six Gold Globe nods, matching that of this month’s true-life boxing drama, The Fighter.
Twins have been a part of the movie industry for ages. Sometimes movie magic doubles up our favorite actor. Other times, real twins give us twice the fun. Check out our list of some memorable movie twins.

In honor of the Winklevoss twins in The Social Network, we’ve compiled our favorite movie twins of all time. There are plenty of twins in movie history – some are memorable, while others are infamous.

In The Social Network, actor Armie Hammer portrays both Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss with a funny and charismatic edge. I had no idea it was the same actor playing both characters until the credits rolled and a recent edition of American Cinematographer Magazine explained the process.

Some scenes used motion-capture technology to duplicate Hammer. At some points, “tracking dots were applied to the face of actor Josh Pence to help facilitate visual-effects techniques that would replace his features with those of co-star Armie Hammer.”

We’re now into awards season once more (time flies, doesn’t it?), with the Emmys having come and gone already. Now we have the annual 2010 Scream Awards which celebrates the more fan-friendly type of movies and TV shows that the Oscars and the Emmys might not honor. And the great thing is YOU get to vote for the winners!

Last year they honored such fan-favorites as Star Trek, Watchmen and Fringe with nominations, which I’m sure pleased many of you. Even if they still nominate some questionable movies, there’s no doubting that for the most part, the Scream Awards are a lot more in line with the majority of the movie going audience who pay to see movies purely to be entertained.

Even if the Scream Awards tend to honor the “right” movies however, this ...

Click to continue reading 2010 Scream Award Nominations

Hold over hit How to Train Your Dragon flambéed the competition over the weekend. The animated tale banked $14.5 million on its fifth weekend. The DreamWorks ‘toon has now scored $177 million in total.

It looks like Jennifer Lopez’ career comeback is going to need a back-up plan, as The Back-up Plan failed to ignite audience interest since it debuted on Friday.
It has been a tight weekend at the box office. Kick-Ass and How To Train Your Dragon are neck and neck for the number one position and we had to wait until Monday to discover if the violent superhero flick scored the top spot [See below for results]. At the very least, Kick-Ass has underperformed. The comic book adaptation was expected to maybe hit the high 20’s, dollar wise. With roughly $20 million in the kitty so far, it looks like Kick-Ass will be profitable – but international grosses will tell if we see the ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: April 18, 2010

There’s a Clash of the Titans on Date Night; It looks like cellmates Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor won’t be getting released in I Love Phillip Morris; Butter won’t melt for Twilight star Ashley Greene; Rowan Atkinson is Johnny English again; Clive Owen and Daniel Bruhl are Intruders.

Box Office

It looks like Clash of the Titans made it two straight weeks at the top of the box office. The big budget 3D (although not very good 3D, apparently) action film grossed an estimated $28 million over the weekend to bring its total up to $111 million. The film should top out at around $150 million. Titans has had mixed reviews at best, but it is Sam Worthington’s third $100 million dollar grosser in a row (not to mention Avatar’s $750 million domestic haul). However, will it be enough to shoot him onto that A-list alongside the Smith’s, the ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: April 11, 2010

How to Train Your Dragon kicks Alice off the top spot; Tom Selleck returns in Reagan’s Law! Kate Hudson has Something Borrowed; Carey Mulligan is a Fair Lady and will Tom Cruise and Reese Witherspoon saddle up for Paper Wings?

Box Office

Alice in Wonderland was finally slayed by How To Train Your Dragon. The 3D animated tale grossed a decent, if not spectacular $45 million. It should play well in the future and make a killing on DVD/Blu-ray.

Although Alice dipped to number two, it didn’t do too badly with a weekend take of $17.5 million. $293 million in the bank and a home video release in the near future means that Disney is going to have an impressive fiscal year.

John Cusack’s Hot Tub Time Machine was third with a disappointing take of $13 million.
3D Movie Tickets are about to get more expensive than ever. Will you have no choice but to accept the price hike, or will you become a more selective moviegoer as a result?

Quick anecdote: earlier this month, my girlfriend and I went to see Alice In Wonderland in 3D. Always the gentleman, I of course paid for the tickets, unaware that here in the wonderful NYC, the price for a 3D movie ticket was up to $16.50. For you mathematically challenged readers, that was a total of approximately $35 for two movie tickets.

If that figure isn’t shocking enough, maybe this next bit of news is: 3D movie ticket prices are about to get even higher.

The increases will reportedly vary by market (state/city/town), and/or by theater chain (Regal, AMC, etc.). However, increases could be as steep as 26% in some areas, and some moviegoers (the ones who don’t ...

Click to continue reading 3D Movie Tickets Get a Price Hike

This week:

Alice stays in Wonderland, much to the disappointment of Jen and Gerard; Said says yes to Conan; Steve Guttenberg gets over excited when he hears that “old faces” will be returning to Police Academy; Renner, Hoffman and Anderson are looking for anyone with $35 million sitting around to finance The Master; want to read another sentence where I compare a potential film franchise to the Jason Bourne movies? If so check out Andy McNab’s Nick Stone film Echelon, and Paul Bettany and Rufus Sewell get their passports stamped for The Tourist.

Box Office

Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland remained at the top of the box office after grossing an estimated $30 million over the weekend.
ABC Family grabs the TV rights to 'Alice In Wonderland' and another major blockbuster. Will they be broadcasting in 3D or are they over the whole craze?

ABC Family, looking to expand their current film library, has acquired the television rights to Tim Burton’s recent fairytale adaptation, Alice In Wonderland. This deal marks the second time ABC Family has stepped up to purchase the broadcast rights to a major theatrical film, the first being the Harry Potter franchise.

Having Disney as both the company behind Alice In Wonderland and the parent company of ABC Family probably helped things along. Although, it doesn’t look like the network was cut any special deal, as the estimated cost to obtain the rights is around $24 million. Considering the film opened to $116 million, this acquisition seems like a no-brainer for the network, but Alice In Wonderland isn’t the only theatrical blockbuster ABC Family recently picked up.
