This week in DVD and Blu-ray releases lacks the punch of an exciting genre film. Yet, where excitement fails, there are a pair of award-winning dramas that sizzled onscreen.

There are quite a few new names of actors in this week’s home video releases, and they overwhelm even the most recognizable actors. It’s strange when the best films are from strangers and the big names bring box office flops.

However, it’s always a good week when Rodney Dangerfield makes the leap to Blu-ray. Your Blu-ray collection is almost complete.

The following releases hit shelves on DVD and Blu-ray this week.

2010 Oscar Race Update: Producers Guild & SAG Award Winners

This past weekend the race for 2010 Oscar got just a bit more debatable, with some surprise winners walking away from both the Producers Guild Awards (PGA) and the Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG).

James Cameron walked away happy from The 2010 Golden Globe Awards,with Avatar taking the top trophies for Best Director and Best Dramatic Picture, leading everybody to think that the Oscars would follow suit. With the Best Picture category now open to ten nominees, variety and uncertainty were suppossed to be this year’s theme.

However, in the months leading up to the biggest award in Hollywood, only a handful of films seem to be popping up as the top contenders.

The names we keep hearing again and again are as follows (listed by name with the director in parenthesis).

With the award season in full swing, we at Screen Rant figured that maybe we should be covering these prestigious events because who knows, Mariah Carey could get up and say something crazy at one of these things OR Mariah Carey could get up and say something crazy at two of these things.

In case of such events, the general consensus is that we need someone around to provide hilarious, informative and cute/endearing commentary as well as someone that you, the reader, can yell at when you don’t agree with something we say.

Weinstein Employees Not Immune To Job Loss

I’m sure the Weinstein Brothers have told their employees which ones are being let go, because finding out via a movie blog that you need to register for unemployment is really uncool.

It would seem that even Hollywood can fall succumb to the ills of a recession-filled economy. Even as Hollywood boasts of record profits (due mostly to a handful of films and the extra boost from 3D sales), major studios like Universal and The Weinstein Company are either cutting back expenses or letting people go.

Such is the sad case today as TWC announced the trimming of their roster from around 125 to about 90 for the next round of cuts coming next month.

On top of that, TWC will also limit the number of films released to 10 per year. That breaks down to four ...

The Weinsteins Acquire ‘A Single Man,’ Did Tarantino Save Them?

Today we have a couple of pieces of news pertaining to The Weinstein Company, headed by brothers Harvey and Bob Weinstein. The first tibit is that the company has acquired the Toronto International Film Festival hit, A Single Man. The second is speculation over the company’s finances, and what part Inglourious Basterds writer/director, Quentin Tarantino, is playing in that calculation.
