DVD/Blu-ray Breakdown: November 1st, 2011

It is the start of a new month for DVD and Blu-ray fans. November has a few very special releases in store, but nothing on the scale of Star Wars or Jurassic Park. Still, plenty to look forward to.

The first week brings a pair of well-received studio films to DVD and Blu-ray, as Cars 2 and Crazy, Stupid, Love both reach home video formats. In addition, Water for Elephants makes its home entertainment debut.

There isn’t a title releasing this week that jumps off the page, but many will be lured in by the Blu-ray release of Hook. A Christmas Carol and Cop Land are also now available on Blu-ray.

11 Movies Ebenezer Scrooge Watches On Christmas

Ebenezer Scrooge has been the world’s most recognizable grouch since 1843. That year, Charles Dickens presented Scrooge in all his miserable glory in the novel A Christmas Carol. Since then, the grumpy old man has seen the stage, the tube and the big screen in a number of interpretations. But what movies would Scrooge watch if he time-traveled to 2010? We’ve made our best guesses.

One could assume Scrooge’s main goal during a modern Christmas would be to cozy up by a warm fire and watch some movies. He would unplug the phones, shut off his computer and pop in as many DVDs (or Blu-rays) as possible. Scrooge would pump up his surround sound system to drown out any wandering carolers and sink into his lonely little world.

This week’s DVD and Blu-ray releases feature a few major titles. You may need to spend more than usual on each if you want to enhance your collection with some of the most recognizable names in movies.

The biggest offering this week marks the second home video release for Avatar – now with a handful of features. Another epic film comes out on Blu-ray this week: Metropolis enhanced to its finest quality yet on Blu-ray.

Interestingly, this week also features a handful of 3D home video releases. I’m not sure yet why so many are hitting shelves today, but if you actually purchased a 3D television, you can put it to good use. Avatar Leads 2010 Saturn Awards Nominations

Today marks the day when the nominations for the 36th Annual Saturn Awards are given out. In case you’re not familiar with them, they are given out by The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films (they also include TV shows and stage productions) so as a reader of Screen Rant I believe they’re right up your alley .

The awards will be given out on June 24th, so we have over four months to speculate and choose the nominees we’d give the award to. The categories range from the usual Best Film (separated into Fantasy, Horror, Science Fiction etc) to Best DVD release and Best DVD Special Edition.

2009 A ‘Milestone Year’ For Movie Profits

I groaned out loud back in August when I found out about the record-breaking summer 2009 box office profits. Now we’re hearing new projections stating that when New Year’s Eve rolls over into New Year’s Day, the movie industry will have crossed a box office milestone, with profits predicted to exceed the $10 billion mark.

I’m sure we’d all be happy that our favorite medium was thriving in the midst of sharp economic downturn – that is, if so many movies hadn’t turned out to be crap this year. Now, the only thing I’m wondering (and you should too) is: “What lesson will Hollywood take from this?”

This week:

The box office sings A Christmas Carol; Faceman visits Dark Fields; Michael Fassbender fires A Single Shot; High Fidelity guys re-team with Lay The Favorite and Helen Mirren sees Red.

Box Office

Christmas came early for Disney with A Christmas Carol. The motion capture Jim Carey film managed to snag around $31 million over the weekend.

Michael Jackson’s This is It banked about $13.4 million over the weekend after dropping less than 42 % from last weekend.

George Clooney’s The Men Who Stare At Goats and Milla Jovovich’s The Fourth Kind were almost neck and neck over the weekend with a weekend take of just under $14 million for each film.

Paranormal Activity just keep knocking at the door marked profit with another $8.5 million.

Cameron Diaz’s The Box opened with a disappointing $7.8 million. This poor opening means that ...

Ever since Comic Con, Disney has been pushing their Robert Zemeckis-directed version of the Charles Dickens’ classic story A Christmas Carol. They’ve done everything they can to ensure that as many people as possible know about the film and go see it. Of course, that is the whole point of marketing but I fear they may be over doing it a touch. The 7-month-long A Christmas Carol train journey was almost overdoing it but now I think they are showing way too much of the film two weeks before its release.

All A Bored Disney’s ‘A Christmas Carol’ Train Tour

The marketing genius that is the Walt Disney Company is at it again, and this time it’s a unique tie-in to the upcoming Robert Zemeckis-directed 3D digital CGI extravaganza, A Christmas Carol. Maybe you’ve heard of it? I don’t see how anybody can’t know about it – Disney has been pushing this movie hard since the beginning of summer at the Cannes Festival and followed it up with a good showing at Comic-Con.

To help mass-market A Christmas Carol, Disney teamed up with Amtrak and HP to help bring a train full of goodies to 40 cities. We’ve been talking about the new Disney 3D movie A Christmas Carol since the first poster came out during Cannes earlier this year. With Robert Zemeckis (Polar Express) directing and Jim Carrey (Ace Ventura) starring as Ebenezer Scrooge, the Charles Dickens’ classic tale is sure to be a hit with audiences.

Is Zemeckis’ Christmas Carol A Horror Film?

Here’s an interesting piece of news for you to ponder. While the rest of Hollywood TV and movie studios are out promoting their upcoming projects at Comic Con, Robert Zemeckis is there to clarify some things about his latest upcoming project, A Christmas Carol. Apparently Zemeckis wants us to know that his version of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is a “classic ghost story”.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times Thursday, and verified at the Disney 3D comic Con panel by our own writer Rob Keyes, Zemickis said he thought people might get the wrong idea about A Christmas Carol because it is being released by Disney.

“…,this is a movie for real movie fans, and real ghost-story fans and fans of graphic novels.”

Comic-Con: Disney 3D Showcases A Christmas Carol

On Thursday morning, the opening day of San Diego Comic-Con, the first Hall H event of this year’s convention was for Disney’s 3-D presentation – the first ever 3-D presentation at the event.

The presentation was divided into three separate parts, the first two of which we wrote about earlier in the weekend: Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland and the recently re-titled Tron Legacy.

New International Posters For ‘A Christmas Carol’

This year marks (amongst other things) yet another adaptation of the classic Charles Dickens tale, A Christmas Carol. This time Disney are having a go, enlisting the help of Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump, Back to the Future trilogy) to write and direct, Jim Carrey to play Ebenezer Scrooge (as well as the Ghosts of Christmas Past/Present/Yet to Come), and the modern day effects of CGI, 3D and motion capture.

We got our first proper look at A Christmas Carol a couple of months ago with the first official poster (after a snapshot version appeared at Cannes), and then a closer, albeit small, look at a CGI Jim Carrey in a short clip that looked very impressive, indeed.

One of the most loved Christmas stories ever written is arguably Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. A quick IMDB search produces 26 versions of the story told on film, theater or TV. A Christmas Carol has been in told in a variety of way by a variety of characters. Mickey Mouse, Kermit the Frog, Mister Magoo, The Flintstones and even Bill Murray have all taken a crack at it and most if not all have succeeded in faithfully reproducing the story.

We’ve been slacking off here a little bit recently when it comes to presenting and talking about newest posters that have been revealed online so it’s time to play catch-up.

Today we have a batch of posters that cover Public Enemies, Transformers 2, A Christmas Carol, Inglourious Basterds and Pandorum.

The Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen poster continues the Egyptian theme we saw with the previous three posters – this is the final poster for the movie. New Movie Posters Premiere At Cannes

Our friends over at FirstShowing.net have acquired some snapshots of brand new posters for some upcoming movies, spotted at the Cannes Film Festival. These are not new posters released online, but rather a couple released Cannes by small and big studios alike to gain the interest of keen festival goers – as well as to catch the eyes of international distributors.

Robert Zemeckis Wants Roger Rabbit To Return

I was happily surprised to learn that director Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future, Forrest Gump, Beowulf) has been thinking about bringing Roger Rabbit back to the big screen. Holy cow, that would be fantastic! I’ve been waiting 21 years for a sequel to Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

At a recent red carpet event, which seems to happen everyday in Hollywood, MTV Movies editor Josh Horowitz asked Zemeckis, who has been focusing on 3D performance-capture movies of late (including the upcoming A Christmas Carol), about using the technology to revisit older movies. He was alluding to possibly a fourth Back to the Future movie. Zemeckis’ answer surprised Horowitz:

“I’ll tell you what is buzzing around in my head now that we have the ability—the digital tools, performance capture—I’m starting to think about Roger Rabbit”
