‘Se7en’ Writer Working On David Fincher’s ’20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’

20,0000 Leagues Under the Sea is one of several projects that David Fincher could select to direct as his followup to this winter’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Walt Disney Pictures – which released the most famous cinematic adaptation of the Jules Verne novel back in the 1950s – is behind this new take on the story. Screenwriter Scott Z. Burns previously indicated that Fincher’s version of the tale would differ significantly from both Verne’s source material and Disney’s Oscar-winning 1954 flick.

There’s no word yet as to whether or not Fincher is certain to set to work on 20,000 Leagues next. However, it has been revealed that another writer will be taking a stab at the screenplay.

‘Captain America’s’ Hayley Atwell Up To Join ‘Captain Nemo’ Or ‘Oblivion’

Period drama fans have been familiar with Hayley Atwell for a few years now, following her turns in films like Brideshead Revisited and The Duchess, as well as the Pillars of the Earth TV mini-series. However, thanks to her role as the capable soldier gal, Peggy Carter, in this past summer’s Captain America: The First Avenger, Atwell is now a much more in-demand starlet.

Hence why she’s currently up to join one of two noteworthy projects: either a 3D film titled The Return of Captain Nemo or TRON: Legacy helmer Joseph Kosinski’s adaptation of his Oblivion comic book.

’20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’ Story Details & Production Update

David Fincher will return to the world of big-budget science-fiction filmmaking for the first time since Alien 3 with Walt Disney Pictures’ new adaptation of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

While there will naturally be major differences between Fincher’s take on the tale of Captain Nemo and the Mouse House’s previous 1954 film version (no singing Kirk Douglas, this time around), there’s been some question as to how much the new 20,000 Leagues would resemble Jules Verne’s original novel.

According to screenwriter Scott Z. Burns, the answer is… not a whole lot. David Fincher is certainly not timid when it comes to embracing new filmmaking technology. So it comes as little shock that what should be his next project, Disney’s new adaptation of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, will utilize state-of-the-art 3D camera equipment to bring Jules Verne’s sea-faring adventure to life.

3D’s explosion in popularity over the past year has made it almost a foregone conclusion that most every immediate upcoming studio production will be shot or post-converted to the format, but this is the first official word that Fincher will follow suit with his remake for the Mouse House.

David Fincher Officially Directing ’20,000 Leagues Under The Sea’

When someone drops David Fincher’s name, most people think sinister murder mysteries, serial killers, Tyler Durden – and, nowadays, antisocial programmers (thank you, The Social Network). Now the dark auteur will try his hand at handling dangerous sea creatures and a renegade submarine captain in a new cinematic version of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

Walt Disney Pictures has officially confirmed that Fincher is set to helm a new adaptation of Jules Verne’s 19th century sci-fi adventure, which was most famously adapted for the big screen back in 1954, under the supervision of Walt Disney himself (he produced, but did not direct the film).

Movie monsters come in all shapes and sizes. While some of the smallest creatures have produced the greatest fear in humanity, there’s no questioning that the giant monsters that attack whole cities and engulf victims like Tic-Tacs are terrifying on a whole other scale (get it?). Over the weekend news broke that Disney’s previously stalled remake of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea had gained traction again when David Fincher became attached to direct and Scott Z. Burns (The Bourne Ultimatum) would write the script. Details were thin but the aim was for it to be visually dazzling in the same vein as Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back.

But is one big-budget 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea movie really enough? For us the answer is probably “Yes,” but that doesn’t stop other studios from having a go at the same story.

David Fincher to Direct ’20,000 Leagues Under The Sea’

Disney is having another go at 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, six months after the studio halted production on the $150 million project.

A new director has been found to replace McG in the form of David Fincher (Fight Club) and a writer in Scott Z. Burns (The Bourne Ultimatum), both of whom are currently in negotiations. We can assume this new pairing will take things in a different direction than was expected a year ago.

According to THR, The project was reportedly being put together as Disney’s new production head, Sean Bailey, settled into his position under recently appointed chairman, Rich Ross.

But it was Fincher himself that showed interest when he approached Bailey about wanting to do a “four-quadrant tentpole movie.” Things really started to move forward as Fincher ...

Disney Halts ’20,000 Leagues,’ McG Off The Project

Wow, I didn’t see this one coming. According to Variety, Warner Bros. has halted moving forward with their remake of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. On top of that, McG, who was set to direct, is off the project, and will now concentrate on other things such as the Warner Bros. drama, Dead Spy Running.

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea seemed to be moving ahead pretty well, with a tentative shooting start of February, 2010. McG even said not that long ago that they’d already looked at different shooting locations including Japan, France and Canada. The Terminator Salvation director sounded pretty enthusiastic back in August when he talked about such things as how he was planning on contemporizing the story while still maintaining the spirit of adventure from the original 1870 story ...

Hollywood’s newest favorite Aussie actor Sam Worthington has a lot on his plate coming up. In addition to being the lead in James Cameron’s long-awaited special-effects extravaganza, Avatar, Worthington will be playing Perseus in the upcoming remake of Clash of the Titans and is rumored for the part of Captain Nemo in Disney’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Wow, I’m just writing about these films and I’m tired.

McG Updates ’20,000 Leagues’, Prepping Terminator 5

Two film directing projects on the horizon for McG (Terminator Salvation) is the Disney remake of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and the fifth installment in the Terminator franchise, currently being referred to as simply Terminator 5. It appears that McG’s focus is currently on 20,000 Leagues, with T5 to follow after that. Thanks to IESB and Collider, we have an update on both high-profile projects.

20,000 Leagues Under The Sea Remake Gets A Rewrite

The script for the upcoming McG directed 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea remake was originally written by Bill Marsilii (Deja Vu) and Justin Marks (Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li). But today we learn from The Hollywood Reporter that Oscar-nominated screenwriter Randall Wallace (Braveheart, Pearl Harbor), has been brought on to rewrite Disney’s update of the classic Jules Verne tale.

THR reports that Wallace’s rewrite aims to focus (the newly titled) Captain Nemo: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea on:

“the origin of Captain Nemo and his submarine warship, the Nautilus. Nemo is a mysterious but noble antagonist in the book, a scientific genius with a thirst for knowledge and a desire for revenge against the forces of imperialism.”

McG Wants Will Smith For 20,000 Leagues Remake

Man, a lot of things came to light during director McG’s Terminator Salvation panel in NYC this past week. Besides silencing skeptics and seriously amping up the buzz-o-meter for Salvation, McG informed our good friends over at Latino Review about his plan for the upcoming remake of Disney’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

And, to everyone’s surprise, McG had this say: he wants Will Smith to star in the film.

2008 seems to have been the year of career for director McG. Despite a ton of fanboy hateration, the Charlie’s Angels director managed deliver what looks to be a kick-ass addition to the Terminator franchise, Terminator Salvation. Now, with five months yet to go before Salvation hits theaters,word comes that McG is being handed another big-budget project to helm: Disney’s remake of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

Sam ‘Spider-Man’ Raimi Has Some Serious Job Security

Sam Raimi doesn’t have to work on anything at all if he doesn’t want to, but his options are wide open. Following the success of his Spider-Man films the red carpet now belongs to him. He’s kicking back and pondering quite a few projects right now, including the possibility of Spider-Man 4. From the sound of it, he (and Marvel and the studio) realize that they need to do something very different with the next Spider-Man film considering the reaction of moviegoers to the weirdness that was Spider-Man 3.
