Genndy Tartakovsky’s ‘Sym-Bionic Titan’ Canceled Due to Lack of Merchandise?

sym bionic titan has been canceled Genndy Tartakovskys Sym Bionic Titan Canceled Due to Lack of Merchandise?

Genndy Tartakovsky has been responsible for some of the best, most creative, and most iconic animated series of the past two decades, including Dexter’s Lab, Samurai Jack, and Star Wars: The Clone Wars (you know, before it was CGI).

Most recently, Tartakovsky created Sym-Bionic Titan, an animated series about an alien princess, her bodyguard, and their robot, sent to Earth disguised as American high school students to escape the war ravaging their home planet. Frankly, it’s a fantastic show, which is why it deeply saddens me to learn that it has not been renewed.

According to a “Cartoon Networker” who spoke to the TAG Blog:

“Genddy’s moved on to Sony Pictures Animation. Titan got competitive ratings with other action shows, but what shut it down was it didn’t have enough toys connected to it. If you don’t have the [toy sales], the studios don’t want to renew for another season.”

Sym-Bionic Titan is a hilarious, action-packed, and beautifully-rendered homage to anime such as Voltron and Castle in the Sky and 1980s John Hughes films like Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club. (There’s even an episode entirely dedicated to satirizing The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.) Though the action and adventure portions of the show would appeal to animation fans, young and old, the humor is geared toward teenagers, as well as twenty-somethings and above – hence the obvious jokes at the expense of shows like Gossip Girl or The Vampire Diaries.

Check out an awesome clip below:

I think it goes without saying that, if this turns out to be true, Cartoon Network has made a massive mistake. So what if Titan doesn’t have enough toys for the merchandise-addicted children of America to purchase? And so what if the show’s ratings weren’t particularly amazing to start? Let it breathe! Let it grow! Produce more toys, if you must! Advertise this show to those adults who watched Dexter’s Lab and Samurai Jack when they were kids. Genndy Tartakovsky is a brand name unto himself, and it’s a shame that Cartoon Network cannot comprehend that. Which is to say, if this turns out to be true.

For fans heartbroken about the rumored cancellation, myself included, keep in mind – Cartoon Network hasn’t officially canceled the show as of yet. That said, they haven’t renewed it either, and with a full series slate next year that includes Green Lantern: The Animated Series, DC Nation (a show that spotlights various DC Comics properties), the Thundercats remake, Level Up, How to Train Your Dragon, The Looney Tunes Show, and more, it’s looking more and more likely that this top-notch series is doomed.

One of the rumors, though entirely unconfirmed, is that Tartakovsky has moved on to direct Hotel Transylvania at Sony Pictures Animation, an animated film utilizing the classic movie monsters of yore (Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster, the Wolfman, et cetera).

If true, I’ve suddenly become interested in Hotel Transylvania.

Sym-Bionic Titan airs the last two episodes of the season – and probably the series – on April 2nd and April 9th @9:30AM on Cartoon Network.

  1. Hey guys, I’ve been following this for over a year and i’m glad SBT got to see the light of day late night at CN, but more importantly I want to avoid having another good show be canceled. I’m talking about Young Justice, I think it’s a great and serious show that CN has tried to kill recently and apparently they did just that. I was upset when SBT got canned, but I will try to spread the word to avoid it not getting another season. If you guys have seen the show and agree that it should not be replaced with s***** shows than please sign the petition

    https://www.change.org/petitions/cartoon-network-continue-young-justice#share

How is it that a show like Annoying Orange keeps going and good shows with great artwors, serious and compelling stories are shut down.

    • “How is it that a show like Annoying Orange keeps going and good shows with great artwors, serious and compelling stories are shut down.”

Same reason “adult” tv is inundated with cop, law and sh*tcom dramas. Just another way to keep the masses dumbed down and uninspired. Have a look at the movie “mars needs mums”. A decent movie with a really good message but because of this it didn’t get the exposure it deserved. Same with SBT. Not trying to school you just adding to the convo :)

      • I just thought Mar Needs Moms wasn’t popular because of it being worse with the uncanny valley than The Polar Express and Beowulf combined, because to me that movie REALLY doesn’t look right, but instead REALLY off. sorry by the way.

        • solo act

          • Huh? What do you mean by that?

      • You make valid points, and I have to agree with you that it does feel that way sometimes. Shows like Fred, Annoying orange and even sometimes the supposed mainstream Ben 10, Adventure time, & Regular show do seem to try and keep things way too random and dumb.

      • Come on guys if we all try we can bring this show back it will be hard but worth it come on let me now if ur in

        • I am in. I just finished the series for like the 100th time and I become increasingly sad each time. I want CN to renew SBT for more and more seasons. I saw that your comment was posted about 8 months ago. If you’re still in, I would love to play my part to get this show back on the air!

          • Agreed loved the show at least give it 1 more season so Genndy can wrap it up

      • how is cartoon network even still a network?

    • you got my support. I saw one ep of Young justice, hooked.

      • stuart snyder seems to be the root of the problem and should peacefully resign as president of cartoon network.

  2. I agree. They should kill shows like The Regular Show, Johnny Bravo, SpongeBob SquarePants, Angry Birds, and the other stupid shows. Give us more shows like Sym-Bionic Titan, Voltron, G-Force, and Johnny Quest. The older Scooby-Doo was good, too, although the last ‘make’ on it stunk. They made a good show into a farce, with that remake, just like the live-action movies. :-(

    • Hey,
go easy on the SpongeBob please. Good show for young children!
An original creation that has entertained many a young person
and its creator should be applauded for his brain child not put
      down.
      Just a thought.

    • A lot of the shows you listed are instant classics, perhaps because back then it was more about quality than profit. A lot of those shows did not do so well at first actually, I know Scooby Doo struggled at some point, but with time the result was a decent show with good profits. CN can have both, but are too eager to please mindless 5 year olds.

      • Mindless 5 year olds?

        • Mindless teenagers?

          • mindless cartoon network

        • The “masses” have the psychological profile of a 5-year old child. I see what you did Edgar.

      • no structure or stability, what is wrong with CN?

  4. These days 5 year olds are smarter than “the masses”….lets just call them “the dumb ****’*” 5 year olds deserve better than being associated with stupidity just because of their age.

    • What about loiter squad how come they never got canceled it has no morals or values behind it

    • Thank you. Ageism is as ugly as any other prejudice IMHO.

      • I do not know why these comments get out of order when “replying”. I was commenting upon a comment rejecting the phrase “mindless 5-year-olds”, and adding my opinion that ageism is ugly, as is any prejudice. Why it is out of order is a mystery to me. Websites *sighs*

        • Ha ha, it is NOT out of order; I just was stuck with a slow interface and zoomed past; now I feel stupid, ha ha.

  5. What can we do to help promote a second season?

    • symbionic titan was an essentially good show and I really can’t accept that they cancelled it simply because there wasn’t any merchandise, that just tells me that cartoon network has no regard for the people who watch their shows and watch their network, this show…..

  6. lets say we are in.. what are we going to do?

  7. There needs to be a toy I want to buy a sym bionic titan

    • let’s get the show back before we look at merchandise.

  8. I’ve seen Sym-Bionic Titan a while ago. I love it and wish for it to continue. I’m addicted to it and want more. It just can’t end like that. Even my family likes the show.
    Have my support!
I sometimes see it air here in Australia on Saturdays. It would be great if it continued.

  9. if it’s just toy sales that they need to keep SBT going, then count me in! i want that show back & i am willing to buy any toy of SBT just to keep it running.

    • still haven’t come to terms with the cancellation of this show, I know some who are still stunned by this action.

  10. SBT still airs, in reruns, on the Adult Swim Anime block (midnight – 6 am, EST) here in the US – at least for now. It’s in the current rotation, but will fall out and be replaced when the original run is over. They often repeat shows that had cult status on this Anime block, so who knows?

    • OOPS, forgot the day. Saturdays, from Midnight – 6 AM EST in the USA on Cartoon Network.

      • where’s the petition?, because something needs to happen now.

  11. Sym bionic titan was awesome my first time watching it I was hooked on it instantly

    • How many signatures are needed?

    • How many signatures are needed for this petition?

  12. How many signatures are needed?

    • where’s the petition?

  13. I just rediscovered Samurai Jack on Netfix and realized it is one of the greatest accomplishments in modern animation. Every cell is art.
I am elated to discover this series (SBT) has resurfaced and have now added it to my DVR. I had no idea that this show existed up until now! that whole thing called becoming an adult got in the way before a quick Google search reestablished my priorities. I can’t wait to see how Tartakovsky has evolved, and hope quality work has a place on modern networks.
Maybe this leads to a bad-ass toy I can buy for my kid, too! Today’s toys SUCK! They are just crappy versions of the cool stuff I had growing up (Transformers, TMNT, GI Joe, etc.).

  14. Lol sorry about the other post anita I am not very good at spanish. anyways I was asking if one of the channels are finally showing sym bionic titan.

  15. Cartoon Network is fallible in the sense that it is a network, owned by a corporation which really doesn’t care about culture, entertainment, or the good of society. Corporations only want money, hence no money making toys, no money making. Cartoon Network has been becoming more and more like Mtv. We had the music television, but pretty soon it will be vacuous reality programming and cartoons that are fit for infants and whipping parents into a spending fervor at the store. Big business is killing all that is good in the world.

    • cartoon network needs to be reformed from the inside out. symbionic titan was the last straw, people have had it with this network.

  16. why do shows get cancelled solely because of TOY, WHO THE HECK BUYS ACTION FIGURES TODAY ANYWAY!…honestly 1 of the MANY reasons i do not like American or any non-anime groups is because they do not know how to finish what they start this stuff is Art and they just up and quit because of toys even if the RATINGS are the highest in the world TOYS make it suck i mean Young Justice was AWESOME but left with the most huge cliff hanger EVER because merchandise was low PATHETIC main reason i watch stuff from only Europe and Japan

    • young justice ended with the appearance of darkseid, that was a big mistake. I mean you can’t just cancel a show when you go and introduce a villain like that.that just doesn’t make any logical sense.

  17. I loved this show. They can’t just cancel the show like that! It’s one of the best show I ever seen. It also made me laugh when ilana made lance sit next to him on the Couch. PLEASE!!! Continue doing this show!

  18. u cant just make a tv show tht is aimed at a crowd of teens. atleast teans from 13 and up, idk maybe younger but still ppl at tht age do not buy toys for tv shows. toys are meant to play with unless theyr somting lyk star wars were u can just collect them. But toys are meant to play with and u should not expect to see a teenager running around with a symbiotic toy in his hands. teens are usually more tuned to games so why not just make games… and please dont just make the first game idea tht comes to mind bcuz we actually want a GOOD game. so w/e, we just want more seasons for this awesome show.

  19. Come on does cn don have vision why cancell good shows like symbionic titan and gennerator rex they may not have as much rating as ben10 but they r extremely creative shows that have very loyal fans canceling them becouse of money makes no sence thay may not make cn make much money but i think cancelling creative shows like those makes people relize they only care about money and draws people away whats the point in watching a cn show if it will b left without a ending

    • this is stuart snyder’s endgame.

  20. Like my self and all my friends we are deeply distraught ,wehaven’t sbeen so captivated by a story line and the amazing art work that sym – bionic titians brought to TV, I am so disappointed it is almost devastating to think that I may never se it’s true final ending, the excitement that came with wondering what was going to happen next is now a hole in my chest of emptiness ,I pray that some one with a half of a brain will step up and save this befor it is to late.

  21. So sad to hear that there’s no season 2 of SBT. I love this cartoon coz its for teenagers, full of action, and very modern. I hope they’d give a chance for the season 2 of this. Just let us watchers not hanging with the story. Story is really exciting. Its really sad to watch something very interesting but clueless about how the story ended. Please give it a try for season 2!.. please! ^_^

  22. I’ve just finished the series and I’m hugely disappointed with the ending. The fact, I might never see next episodes just makes me wanna cry, I feel so empty inside and devastated. I would do anything to see the series get continued :(.

  23. I think Symbionic Titan is like the vision of Marvel Comics/Marvel Studio stories. If Cartoon Network give it a chance it will bloom very well. Sure. the product may not have toy merchandise yet but if it is given a chance to at least show all of its continued story that left fans hanging and put all the series on DVD I will buy the complete series and its seasons. I really love the story of this cartoon. Reminds me of Voltes V, Voltron and all of the Giant Robot heroes. I personally think the story line is 10X better than Voltron. Cartoon Network I would highly recommend give Symbionic Titan a chance. I even think the story line of this cartoon is much better than the movie Pacific Rim. Hollywood or even Disney should consider looking at it and give it a chance. I believe its sequels will be excellent.

  24. Well this was telegraphed.

If a studio isn’t profiting off a show through merchandising, then the show isn’t worth keeping to air. But if a show like Annoying Orange is allowed to air, that’s okay. I understand the mindset of those bigwigs.

I really hope Rebecca Sugar’s show, “Steven Universe” doesn’t follow this same route.

  25. Honestly, Cartoon Network doesn’t deserve something like SBT because they’re too focused on selling toys to spoiled kids who’ll make their parents buy anything and everything they see on TV when they SHOULD be focusing on teens who’ll find a way to buy anything and everything they see on the internet, a much wider and more reliable audience, but everytime they try, they get scared and hide behind the random nonsense that is half their other, more candy-coated “family friendly” shows with subtle humor and references for teens and adults. I don’t hate things like Adventure Time and Regular show, but there’s no point to them, no story outside of a few small arcs that last 2-3 episodes at max and I just got bored with them. Rather than people begging CN to bring this back, what we really need is a new channel meant for teens+ that isn’t afraid to take risks and get out there. No sugar-coating; no asinine morals; no spoon-feeding; no “nothing like reality” reality shows or sitcoms about quirky teenage girls and their odd, yet somewhat relatable adventures with their weird friends and crushes they’ll have for 4 seasons, get with in the 5th and then dump right after, building up everything for nothing, and where all their problems are solved with spontaneous musical numbers [looking at you, Disney]. A channel that can say a good ‘eff off’ to whiny parental groups and put up cartoons with openly gay characters or a VARIETY of actual stories with plots ranging from cute to funny to serious, interesting characters, and real relationships [or just stuff with lots of explosions], but aren’t so generic, cliche and dumbed down like we can’t comprehend a moral that’s it’s just insulting, with stuff relevant to the people with the ability to get jobs and buy random, online crap their parents wouldn’t get them, or that they wouldn’t get themselves, because money’s too tight and they have bills to pay. You could probably more easily put something like that on the internet, but TV deserves something good and I can’t stand all that automatic billing nonsense or pay-per-watch I know they’d pull and annoying advertisements that play on the side like I care about them.

  26. I really love Sym-Bionic Titan — as is obvious many other do, too.

Is there some way to justify an anime show without toys as the main selling point? I mean there are so many other popular series without toys, but more grown up merchandising.

I do look forward to seeing how the story turns out for all of the various characters. I have so many hopes and dreams for them.

Are there books (e-book or physical) or magazines or other ways the story is continuing?

  27. I AGREE SOMETHING should be done about how A great show like symbiotic titan IS canceled. The show has like all of grenndy’s shows. Thwy should just make a a 2feet tall symbiotic titan (with attachment weapons) and probly monsterss too.that would kick off the series since there aren’t any “toy” sales
