The last few months we’ve heard multiple rumors about the development of The Expendables 2 – with a number of staple action movie actors, such as Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Jean-Claude Van Damme interested in joining/rejoining the sequel to the 80s mashup film.

With so many people stepping-up their interest in working on the sequel, one key figure could be taking a rather large step down. If recent reports are to be believed, Expendables’ director, creator, and actor, Sylvester Stallone, is unlikely to direct the second outing.

According to The Los Angeles Times, Stallone will develop and star in the film – but isn’t very interested in directing the project. Instead, Stallone is rumored to be meeting with potential candidates for the director’s chair – though no names were mentioned at this point.

Given the original film’s $275 million overall gross (domestic and international ticket sales) as well as the amount of industry people discussing their interest in joining the franchise, it’s safe to say that The Expendables 2 has been fast-tracked by Millennium Films. It’s possible that the accelerated production schedule could have something to do with Sly handing off one of his duties to another filmmaker. Although, the director’s chair wouldn’t be the first responsibility Stallone has delegated for the sequel – with David Agosto and Ken Kaufmanto in charge of writing the story.

As we hinted at in our prior Expendables 2 coverage, allowing another director to be in charge of directing duties could be a smart move for Stallone – as well as the Expendables franchise. Not only would it free the actor up to start thinking about the inevitable Expendables 3 (or some other high-octane project), it would also allow a refreshing influx of creativity to the film – as we all know, 80s action sequels were mostly formulaic cash-ins that lacked any real identity or personality – and it’d be a shame if the Expendables sequel fell into the same trap as the movies it’s riffing on.

Of course, it’s always possible that Stallone just needs a break from all the testosterone – with so many A-list action headliners in one place, it’s got to be an especially hard job keeping them all in line – even for Sylvester Stallone.

  1. this is great news b/c his directing and editing sucked… badly. i hope he chooses someone that has directed good action movies in the past and knows how to deal with different people.

  2. dare I say it…Michael Bay.

    • it wont work, i mean there will be good explosions but everything else will be chaotic, especially with the fight scenes and shoot outs.

imo he should have a director for every aspect of the movie in order to make the movie as epic (in an action sense) as possible: 1 for fight choreography, 1 for the vehicle scenes another for the shoot-outs, then he could have an individual director for all scenes not related to ass kicking :D
would work great if he went with a similar plan to this.

    • o hell no

  3. How about roping in Louis Letterier? He’s definitely got an eye for action movies, car chases and fight scenes.

    • just checked him out and i’ve only got one thing to say… f*** yes, the man def knows how to choreograph an action movie.

      • He knows where to place his actors and where to place the cameras in a shot so that we can soak up all that action no matter how frenetic and chaotic. Just look at the first two Transporter movies.. none of that Bourne-type shaky-cam, quick cuts and close-ups during action scenes.

      • Other than Letterier, Pierre Morel would work, too. Look at what he did for Banlieue 13, Taken and From Paris With Love. Clean, well-paced action shots that allow us to soak up the details.

Getting French directors and cinematographers to work on a testosterone-filled action movie that harks back to the Reagan era? The results could be quite nice.

        • Piere Morel would be a good choice also.

  4. Joe carnahan!!!!!!!!

    • Carnahan would work….IF the others I mentioned are not available.

I also want to see a cameo by CLINT EASTWOOD in the sequel, where he talks crap to Sly, Arnold and Bruce! That would be classic cinema right there!

      • If Clint would take a cut, have him direct it.

  5. This is good news. Getting another to take takeover the sequel, is a smart move by Sly. I was always hoping 80′s action director John McTiernan would direct, but he is doing time and won’t be available.

Doug Liman, Quentin Tarantino, Michael Mann, Tony Scott, James McTiegue, and Luc Besson, would be good choices to direct the sequel off the top of my head.

Get anyone of those guys to direct the R rated sequel Sly, and the sequel will surpass the 1st one and make more money.

  6. John woo! Then we can through in the doves!

  7. i like Lee in the movie

  8. Great news! I really didn’t like Expendables even though on paper it had everything I loved.

Weird because Stallone actually did a great job with Rambo and Rocky Balboa. Not sure what happened with Expendables but like someone else said, bad directing and bad editing.

  9. Peter Berg.

    • I’m not sure what you are saying. 8-)

  11. EDIT: Not as director, as part of the cast.

  12. I think Shane Black would do a great job directing it!! no matter what I would watch it. Stallone only guaranteed an 80s/90s style action popcorn movie and he delivered and made a ton of money off it so like it or not the movie has a huge fan base that will watch a sequel.

  13. Antoine Fuqua (Shooter, Training Day)

  14. letterier, morel and berg are all busy with much bigger movies then expendables 2.movies like G,now you see me,E.D.F.,battleship.i think great chice for expendables 2 would be george tillman jr.i loved what he did with faster…

  15. JEAN CLAUDE VAN DAMME!!!!!!!

  16. “As we hinted at in our prior Expendables 2 coverage, allowing another director to be in charge of directing duties could be a smart move for Stallone – as well as the Expendables franchise.”

Wake up people, this is how the first Rambo franchise was destroyed. Stallone directs the first Rambo which I loved and then they turn the directing over to others and they sucked. No other director out there has the ability or the experiance that Stallone has to get his vision on film. When they let other people direct Stallone most of the time it is major failure. Why mess with what works.

    • Ted Kotcheff directed First Blood, not Stallone.

      • Aleric seems to need to do research LOL.

  17. Hell..I’ll say it:can we get a sequel to Tango&Cash please Sly.

  18. In other news, Expendables 2 may not suck after all.

  19. Get Clint Eastwood to direct this. Hey, why not?

  20. I thought Expendables was a great action flick, but with the cast they had they should have delivered much more than they did.

  21. Nobody has mentioned John Woo yet. That’s an action directing legend right there.
