[UPDATE: It seems that Stallone is NOT directing The Expendables 2 after all. Scroll down for more.]

Just a month ago, word had gotten out that Sylvester Stallone might pass on directing The Expendables 2 - to let another talent call the shots on the action-star ensemble sequel. Things have apparently changed since then, as it now looks like Sly will in fact be the Expendables pack leader – both onscreen and behind the camera.

Stallone now appears to be set as the director on Expendables 2, which is scheduled to [insert violent verb(s) of preference here] its way into theaters at the end of Summer 2012.

Expendables Premiere was the source for this news about the Expendables sequel, and says more information about the film’s plot – along with which screen stars will be returning/joining Stallone in the new hard-hitting action pic – will be revealed in the near future.

What is known right now is that Stallone and his Expendables co-screenwriter Dave Callaham have passed-on scripting duties for the followup to a relative newcomer, David Agosto, and Ken Kaufman, whose resume includes the screenplays for Muppets from Space, Space Cowboys, and Curious George.

Space Cowboys aside, that’s an undeniably strange background for someone who’s been hired to pen a cinematic throwback to R-Rated action fests from the 1980s. On the other hand, the first Expendables was never credited with showcasing excellent writing – or great direction, truth be told, since Stallone’s work in that area actually earned him a Razzie nomination.

expendables spoilers Sylvester Stallone Will NOT Direct The Expendables 2 [Updated]

While there are many legitimate criticisms to make about Stallone’s direction in the first Expendables (including, among other things, the overuse of “shaky cam”) there’s the chance he’ll learn a bit from his mistakes and do a better job with Expendables 2. After all, you can always teach an old dog new tricks, right? Wait… icon razz Sylvester Stallone Will NOT Direct The Expendables 2 [Updated]

On a more serious note: Expendables 2 could feature more significant roles for both Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger, and aims to include ever more brawny action stars of a certain age bracket than the first film. So that seems reason enough to be hopeful about how this sequel will turn out for now.

UPDATE: Deadline says that “Sylvester Stallone wants it known that despite reports to the contrary, he will not be directing the sequel to ‘The Expendables’.” Case closed, it seems.

The Expendables 2 arrives in U.S. theaters on August 17th, 2012.

  1. I sometimes wonder what Hollywood is thinking when they give certain jobs to people… For example, letting the guy who directed Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle (as awesome as it may have been…) direct Terminator Salvation… As opposed to say…. ANYBODY ELSE EVER!!!!

  2. The Expendables was one of the best films of 2010. It was f*****g epic.
The fights between Jet Li/Dolph Lundgren, Sylvester Stallone/Steve Austin, Randy Couture/Steve Austin as well as Jason Statham/Jet Li/Gary Daniels knocked everyone on their ass and were so amazing and action-packed, audiences all over the world were left breathless.

I hope in the sequel, there will be more amazing fight scenes. It would be good to include Wesley Snipes in the sequel to fight Jason Statham and they can finally give us the fight that they unfairly denied us in Chaos (2005).

  3. arnold needs to get in stallone shape and he could be just as badass in his roles as he used to be. i want to see a leaner arnold he could also play a bigg part in the new terminator.

  4. guy we need to save the show ‘NO ORDINARY FAMILY’ go 2 http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/abc-dont-cancel-no-ordinary-family/ and sign the petition pleas its the best show ever. thx guys

    • that show had potential but went nowhere. geared to much for the little kids. sorry, hope it gets canned. is there a petition for that?

  5. They should include Johnny Rico himself Casper Van dein. How great would that be?

  6. Sylvester Stallone did a great job directing the first one.
Not directing the second made no sense at all and
it appears everyone has come to their senses.

    • are you kidding me, the only decent thing he did was the big gun fight at the end, the choreography for the hand to hand fights sucked and the editing/camera work made it impossible to see wtf was going on (during h2h fights). not only that but he didn’t pace the movie right, same with rambo 4, we got little bits of action throughout with a large chunk of dialogue in the middle and a big fight to rap it all up in the end.

imo he should get a new director and have someone assist with choreography and script.
i thought expendables was ok for an action movie, but with the cast he had with him it could have been ALOT better.

      • To each his own, but I thought Sly did a good job on all accounts. I Expendables was great!!

      • A film like this does not demand the talents of Stanley Kubrik.
Stallone hit all the right notes for this kind of composition
and while not a symphony it was entertaining opera.

        • I totally agree with you on that..

      • I respecfully do not agree with you. Maybe you need a better TV?

  7. I like d the first one it was a great throw back but to think it was anything more is crazy, Im looking forward to the sequel and cant wait to see who they are going to bring into it.
    wish list
    Steven Seagal
Van damn, even though he said he wont be in any movie with seagal
    Wesley Snipes
    Chuck Norris
    Kurt Russell
    Sam Jackson
    Nic Cage
    Rutger Hauer
Jackie Chan Vs Jet would be great to see
    Laurence Fishburne
Throw in a wrestler like the Rock or Hunter and a MMA guy or two as cannon fodder and we are set
come on lets face it we are going to need alot of guys to fill out Willis’ guys and Arnold’s Team as well personally they should get the Predator team for Arnolds team, that would be great Jesse Ventura , and call them the Governors, lol, and throw Carl Weathers in there.

  8. The chances for this sequel to be as good as the first movie just went up 50%, this is the best news I have heard all week.

  9. I should see the first movie first then. lol. It looked good but I never got around to seeing it.

  10. YEAH! Sly directing means no worries of too much significant change in the sequel, And Sly always delivers the goods on sequels of his movies!!!!

The expendables may not have been perfect but it was hell of a great ride for us action fans! Keep up the good work ITALIAN STALLION!!

  11. I totally enjoyed The Expendables for what it was, and that was a shoot-em up action movie. Can’t wait for the second.

  12. Yeah, Stallone should direct the sequel, no doubt!

  13. Love Sly, but I wish he would have hired another director for the sequel.

Oh well, I’m sure Sly has learned from his mistakes in the 1st film and make up for it in the sequel. Sly is very receptive and takes constructive criticism well. He knows what needs to be improved upon to make the sequel better overall than the first film.

  14. Watched Expendables tonight,,,

    It was horrible.
What a mindless killing for fun movie. Boring,,,

Don’t care who’s directing the sequel. I’m sure it will revolve around sly’s character rescuing some helpless woman, after destroying her entire village.

Seriously §ly is this all you think about you freaken weirdo.

    • David Callaham wrote the script.. so maybe he’s the weirdo, at least sly tried not to make the girl his girlfriend.. that would have been awkward..

and the non stop action, maybe that was his point. Remember that he wanted it as a throwback for 80′s action films?

  15. Why is it that people are dumb enough to blame a director towards all problems of the film.. If you wanna blame the fight choreography blame CORY YUEN the fight choreogrpaher the same guy who directed THE TRANSPORTER..

And what can you get from a hack like David calaham for a script? The guy hasn’t done any solid enough script in his life.. And blame the studio (NU IMAGE) to beef up a budget for an EPIC action film like THE EXPENDABLES.

Sly put up with a measly 65 million budget and made it look like top studios like paramount or Tristar was involved..

kick out CORY YUEN for the fight choreographer and bring in DONNIE YEN!

Throw out AVI LERNER as producer and bring in JOEL SILVER!

David Calaham is not already involved with the script so bring in

    STEVEN E. DE SOUZA!

  16. (Lastly)
Non stop action, is one thing. Non stop killing and blowing people up just bores me and really what’s the reasoning behind depicting that over and over?

After awhile I found the blur of death and dismemberment took me so out the film I just focused on the cheesy action music that was going on during the fight scenes. It was action porno music. Best I can describe.
    :)
I can see Sly’s motivation and it was kinda cool to see these actors (minus the uncomfortable Arnold scene) together, but the suido disfunctional forbidden boyfriend/savior that Sly plays is just so lame at this point I just couldn’t take it somewhat seriously at all.

I’ll say this that Sly’s direction was decent, but the story material was garbage.
Good direction won’t turn garbage into a quality film. Maybe for 12 year olds going through highschool but not me. Lol

    • this was Stallone’s first all star emsemble directed film…Look at RAMBO 4, It wasn’t perfect. But it came close to the tone of the book.. Mindless action might be too much, but it was far better than THE LOSERS. Which to me was a total loser.

And as for the savior part. It was like what Mickey Rourke’s character saying. It was saving what conscience he has left that motivated him from saving the girl. And I thank sly for bringing back Arnold on a small cameo. Which I agree was badly executed for the film. But like I said Sly always tries to make better of sequels he directed.

  17. I would like to see Stallone reprise Charles Bronson’s role in the 70′s classic “Hard Times”. Maby this one could take place in a post Obama depression. Who’s with me???

  18. I don’t see how Sly can keep doing the steroids needed for these films.

I’m sure he’s on the pump at this point.

  19. there are plenty of people that could be in the expendables 2 that arent mentioned a lot. if people want wrestlers in this movie, they should use Triple H, Undertaker, Kurt Angle, or even The Big Show. If they want another MMA fighter, they should use Brock Lesnar, Tito Ortiz, or Rampage Jackson. Also, since Eric Roberts character got killed off, they should get someone to play someone like him. Like Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci, or even Morgan Freeman. Plus, obvious choices would be Steven Seagel, Chuck Norris, Van Damme, Jackie Chan, Carl Weathers, Hulk Hogan, and Mr. T
