Syfy Developing ‘Booster Gold’ TV Series

After a well-received appearance in the final season of WB’s seminal superhero series Smallville, the popular DC character Booster Gold is returning to the small screen in his own TV show for the Syfy channel.

The series is being headed up by Greg Berlanti’s production company, Berlanti Productions. Comic book fans might recall that Greg Berlanti is no stranger to the DC Universe. He created the superhero family drama No Ordinary Family and also wrote and produced Green Lantern (though you shouldn’t hold that against him). Comic book and TV scribe Andrew Kreisberg, who has written for Fringe, has signed on to write the pilot episode of the show.

Having his own TV show w0uld be a fitting development for Booster Gold, whose gimmick involves being a fame-hungry time traveler who uses future technology to become a modern-day superhero. Booster Gold was played by Eric Martsolf in Smallville, and alongside fellow superhero Blue Beetle proved to be popular with fans. Gold was also an important character in DC’s Flashpoint comic book event, which preceded the company’s New 52 relaunch.

The Hollywood Reporter, which first reported the news, notes that Syfy has only ordered a script for the show, not a full pilot. However, given the potential for the character, as well as the overwhelming popularity of comic book properties with mainstream audiences, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Syfy move forward with the series, eventually.

Booster Gold on Smallville.

While I’ve liked him as comic relief, I’ve never been a big fan of Booster Gold as a serious character. He’s definitely grown on me over the last year though, because of his unique backstory. The concept of a flashy, egotistical superhero from the future has a lot of potential for a TV series, particularly because, as THR writes, “the future doesn’t happen without first protecting the present.”

To those Booster Gold fans out there, what would you like to see in this TV series? Would you tune into Syfy to check out the character?

  1. Eric Martsolf or Ryan Mcpartlin for Booster Gold!

  2. Although the ideal of a Booster Gold series is very exciting, there is a lot that can go wrong.

    Proceed With Caution.

  3. If the same guy who played him on Smallville played him, I would watch this religiously.

  4. no! I would not watch a show with booster gold I hate that guy

  5. Booster Gold is probably the best 80′s DC creation (which isn’t saying much). He also got a lot of tremendous development over the last few years (unfortunately it’s been wiped clean by the new 52!) but yeah, I’d be interested in seeing a series about this guy. I think it would be more a superhero comedy – which isn’t something we’ve had yet.

  6. I wish they could get Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis to write this. I always secretly wished for a Blue Beetle/Booster Gold film.

  7. Wow – I hope they really do make this happen! i like
to see Booster Gold in action again.

  8. sweeet!! i would totally watch it!!

  9. I hope skeets isn’t an A.I. like he was on smallville other wise it’s gonna come off very ironmanish

  10. Time traveling always spells trouble for tv shows. I mean imagine if BG went back in time where all of today’s DC heroes were children and he did something that led to them not becoming the heroes they would be today.

  11. I adore Booster Gold. Booster is possibly my favorite superhero, right alongside Batman. There is so much potential for the character. That is, as long as the writer understands the how the character works.

Booster Gold, contrary to popular belief, is not just in it for the money. Read 52! Read his (now cancelled) solo series! Booster not only saves the entire multiverse many, many times, but he does it all behind the scenes, letting the entire world think he’s a greedy moron.

Booster Gold is a very human character with very human flaws, but he also has good intentions. He’s a character unlike any other in the DCU, and I would love to see a TV series about him. And Skeets needs to be a robot, not a freaking AI system like in Smallville!

    • I was going to comment on this story, but you already said pretty much everything I wanted to say. If they get his real character right, and have the real Skeets, I will sign up for cable just to watch this one show. Supporting characters from the comics could only add to the awesome.

But they could screw up so badly. Given the people and network involved, it could be a disaster beyond the scale of last year’s Wonder Woman pilot.

    • Well said, Booster is probably one of the most interesting and underappreciated characters in the DCU and if they do the show right(i.e. developing the Booster and Ted Kord friendship, making sure Skeets is an android and not a “behind the scenes” AI, showing his depth of character), this show could be awesome!!
Even if they mess it up I’ll watch every episode religiously because Booster is easily my favorite hero and to all those people who say he’s not a strong or deep enough character with enough history and mythos for a lead role in a TV show… You clearly haven’t read his comics, so why comment?

  12. Then there would only be Marvel heroes to look up at, , , that wouldn’t go well with me then.

  13. Great news! Booster Gold is one of my favorite characters.

  14. If anyone can do this series badly its syfy.

  15. i think it would work better on the usa station as characters are welcome there … and they would have a better budget ..

  16. LoL, well it’s about time the Syfy channel ventured into the realm of situation comedies.

  17. Tom Welling said he would love to do another Clark Kent / Superman TV movie or anything related to it, so it would work fine! they cn even have special guest appearances by Aquaman , Green Arrow & other JLA heroes too! hope this really happens cause i miss seeing the DC heroes on TV.

  18. I won’t hold Green lantern agaist the writer as I liked the film as did my wife and daughter. Rob, with the huge dustup over Kofi’s review, do you really want to throw more fuel on the fire? There are many out there who liked it more than Thor (me inclded).

I look forward to Syfy’s push on Booster. His appearances in Smallville and the JL TV show made him out to be a 3-dimensional and interesting character. If they do it after Eureka ends, then the guy who plays Zane on Eureka, I think, would be a great choice. -CJ

  19. I will be fine if they don’t go too serious with him. Booster is really funny. I didn’t like him at first but thanks to the Graphic Audio audiobook series. I find him hysterical. I will DVR it.

  20. its great!!!

  21. the only way i want to see welling ever again is if he will put on the efn suit and show many of us smallville fans the thing we have been waiting 10 years for which is welling as superman kicking ass … geez

  22. This really would bring up the ratings to this new spinoff as well as do real justice for the fans if they have Tom Welling wear the full costume whenever he makes guest appearances now & then on “Booster Gold”.

  23. I like to see the rebirth of Hawkman & Hawkgirl in a Booster Gold episode!
(Geoff Johns) could write a episode of Booster meets THE FLASH (Barry Allen) in full red costume too! the show will go far with all the appearances of DC heroes & villians, they can even do a 2 hour TV movie with Booster Gold & the Legion of Superheroes!

  24. damn gina syfy needs to hire you …
but yeah i think all of what you said would be awesome but i dont that there is enough booster gold mythos to make the show work .. the guy doesnt even have that many villians and he certaintly doesnt have a big time villian .. i.e. lex, joker, darkseid… i think thats why the wonder woman pilot didnt work out so well .. ofcourse they could always go the smallville meter freak of the week way .. who knows. i do hope it works out though.

  25. F*ck. YES. XD I found out about this right after I had a Booster Gold Rush at my comic shop! Made my day.
