Well it’s time once again to put on my cynical hat, a hat that I find myself reaching for more and more lately. It’s not really something that I want to do but if Hollywood insists on pushing 3D technology as the next big thing and consistently under-delivers on their promises, then I’m going to just keep putting it on.
So, what is the next 3D bullet being loaded into Hollywood’s chamber? How about the DC comic hero Swamp Thing? Steve “Frosty” Weintraub at Collider was fortunate to be at a press conference with mega-producer Joel Silver for his newest movie Whiteout, starring super hot Kate Beckinsale. Joel has some ideas for the 3D technology (what director/producer/studio doesn’t these days?) and he had this to say:
“I’m developing a picture now that I’d like to do…I’ll hopefully do Swamp Thing, which is a movie we’ve had for a long time. We think that would be great to do in 3D. There are a couple of projects I’m thinking about (for the format) but not everything.”
First, let me say that I’m glad to hear he is not considering 3D for everything, but I would like to see what he considers to be “a couple of projects.” Second, I like the character Swamp Thing and was a huge fan of the TV show back in the early 90′s and very much enjoyed the sci-fi/horror cheese of Wes Craven’s 1982 cult classic. I truly hope this property is treated as the bad-ass, bad-guy-whoopin’, butt-kickin’ man-vegetable that it is.
What I’m hoping doesn’t happen is that the 3D doesn’t turn gimmicky, which unfortunately is what is happening now. Although, we can all hope that James Cameron’s Avatar changes the way 3D is used. Up did it right earlier this summer by using 3D to enhance the audience’s viewing pleasure instead of distracting them with cheesy effects; but that was a solid CGI film whereas, Swamp Thing would be live-action – and if 3D CGI is used, then it would just turn out bad IMO. I’d like to see Joel Silver go back to using practical SFX by bringing in true masters of the field like Stan Winston Studios, Jim Henson Company, Rick Baker or heck, even bring back Dean Gates from the TV series .
The Swamp Thing is not the most popular character in the DC universe, Superman and Batman share that title, but it probably has the largest cult following and has had several crossovers with both superheroes. If Silver and company screw this up by trying to cash in on gimmicky 3D, then fan boys will be in full-on revolt mode. I do not, repeat, DO NOT want to see a branch sticking out at my face or a glob of mud being flung towards me. That is not entertaining and it sure as hell doesn’t impress me with your prowess with the 3D technology.
What do you think about a Swamp Thing movie and the possibility of it being in 3D?
Because Joel Silver has literally dozens of projects in development (seriously check out his IMDB page), who knows when Swamp Thing will be released.
