After 8 seasons of Supernatural  being on the air – after Sam and Dean battled angels and demons and even Lucifer himself – there’s still one thing that fans of the show wonder: Will John Winchester (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), the patriarch of the family, ever return? Thanks to Supernatural executive producer Robert Singer, we now have a realistic update on all things John Winchester.

While speaking to press at Comic-Con 2013, we brought up the topic of John Winchester, questioning whether, after all this time, his return could actually occur, and whether or not it’s something they still think about when they plan upcoming seasons.

Here’s what Singer had to say:

You know, Jeff, when he was done with us, his career, thank God, took off. I don’t know if ‘Magic City’ is going to come back next year, but he’s the lead in that. Jeff is sort of way back there in the past. I mean, we talk about, ‘God, it would be great if we could bring Dad back,’ but it’s a hard thing to pull off given Jeff’s schedule and what he’s been up to. But it’s a ball we always keep afloat.

Like Bobby, John Winchester is – or was – an integral part of the series, at least in its first few years on the air. But as Singer said, the tale of John Winchester has essentially run its course, and Sam and Dean have moved well beyond the need for any fatherly input – thanks, in part, to Bobby’s inclusion. But still, could Supernatural bring back John and have it make sense? According to Singer:

Nobody dies in this show, you know; we bring everybody back. So, yeah, we would find a way.

Whether or not it would make sense is one thing, but knowing that they still keep toying around with John’s return is nice to hear. Sure, he hasn’t been a part of the show for the majority of its run, but at least they’re open to his possible return, unlike what happened with Michael Rosenbaum and Smallville.

In Smallville’s final season, fans continuously wondered whether or not Rosenbaum would return to the series as Lex Luthor. For the fans, his return was required; for the studio that produced Smallville (and produces Supernatural), they weren’t as up for it. After the Smallville finale aired, Rosenbaum revealed to GEEEKTIME! with Ralph Cirella that, even though he had wanted to return to the show before the final season, the studio was against his return – this is, until the fans forced the hand of the powers that be, which led him to officially return to the show.

But John Winchester’s return is completely different. After all, Jeffrey Dean Morgan went on to star in Watchmen for Warner Bros. after his stint on Supernatural was over, so one would assume that his relationship with the studio remains intact. Additionally, Morgan has previously said that he’d be willing to come back. So, what’s the hold up? Said Singer:

Without telling tales out of school, Jeff saying he’d be willing to come back and how much Jeff would want to come back are completely two different stories.

Though this probably isn’t the news that fans would like to hear, Jeffrey Dean Morgan shying away from returning to Supernatural makes sense from an actor’s point of view. Sure, he’d like to return, but Supernatural has been on the air for quite some time, much of which has been without him. And even though the show is a staple for CW, it doesn’t provide him with the necessary platform to grow and evolve as an actor in the same way as, say, starring in Magic City on Starz does – despite Supernatural being a higher-rated show.

So if Jeffrey Dean Morgan wants to return, it’ll have to make sense to him career-wise, not simply to appease the fans. And  with Supernatural entering season 9, it seems more and more unlikely that they’ll be able to create a storyline that would include John Winchester as well as progress the overall arc – at least in a way that would appeal to Morgan. Still, if the show ever does receive a final season order, one shouldn’t be too surprised if John Winchester returns in some way, even if it is briefly.

Then again, with Supernatural now looking past season 10, to season 11, 12 and beyond, only God knows when the end of the show may come. And as fans of the show know, God hasn’t been around for quite some time.

  1. It would be pretty cool to see him return but i dont think its necessary

    • I concur.

  2. It would be pretty cool if the show just called it a wrap.

    • Amen to that!

  3. If Jeffery Dean Morgan joins however briefly for an episode, then that episode or particular story arc has to be too damn cool and amazing not to pass up to watch- even if some fans like myself have become tires with the more recent seasons.

Season 8 is like the X-Men First Class of Supernatural. While not perfect, having some major issues and not a full return to the best, season 8 gave fans a glimpse of
hope of full redemption and return to old fashion, yet evolving show.

If it interest someone like JDM to return even for a minimal role, then my excitement will increase over the inclusion of the head Winchester who will put his kids back on track to their previous character evolution (not stagnation) and to the quality that the story had to offer him

  4. By all means, bring him back! He definitely left a hole in the show after his all too brief but very impressive participation. Now that all Hell broke loose in Heaven (see what I did there?) there is definitely an option to have him come back. Oh, and while you are at it: bring back Ellen, Jo and Ash as well! :D

  5. If he returns for a single ep, that is nothing that has to “make sense for him, career-wise”. They aren’t talking about bringing him back as a recurring character.

  6. I’d like to see Matt Cohen in the spinoff. That’s the John Winchester I’d like to see.

  7. Bring him back as God. Or a Vessel for God. It would be a cop out , but maybe for the end of the show Have Lucifer escape the cage some how. I’ve stopped watching ages ago but that’s my two cents.

  8. I’m more curious about their half-brother, Adam. No one seems to mind that the guy’s still stuck in hell. (Unless I missed something…)

    • No, no, you’re right – nobody minds that he’s stuck in Hell. ;-)

      • I thought his soul would be in heaven because his body was Michael’s vessel.

        • That’s not how it works. When an angel or demon possesses a human their soul remains in the body but it is suppressed by the angel or demon that is now in control. So no, Adam’s soul was still in his body while Micheal possessed him. At the moment Adam’s soul is still in the cage along with Micheal and Lucifer.

          • When Ruby possessed GenPad’s body, they made a huge production of how her soul had passed on and left an empty “meat suit.”

            • Yes but that was an exception and angels and demons are different creatures. Also if you remember Lilith possessed the body of that little girl and left and the little girl was okay.

    • If a Winchester must come back drag Adam out of cage. Papa Winchester is the uncle Ben of supernatural. While the entire cast has died and resurrected multiple times John’s death is the one that has to stick. An apparition of some sort for an episode would be awesome but not as a regular

      • I agree but they could also have him sent forward in time like Henry except he goes back at the end as a brief one or two episode arc.

  9. Anything to get off the hook. TPTB have changed reasons repeatedly why JDM doesn’t come back where JDM has said regardless of money, etc he’d love to come back if for nothing more to act with JA and JP again. Just admit Carver and crew you don’t want him back.

    • That’s what I think too. JDM has even said that he has never been asked back after they killed John off. I don’t see why he would need to lie about something like that. All he has to say is that I would love to come back if my schedule permits rather than basically accusing Kripke and Co. of lying.

  10. I would love to see John Winchester come back as a vessel for god!! Great idea!!

  11. Bringing back John is so easy now that season 8 finished the way it did, back at the end of season 2, John crawled out of hell through the devils gates, he can come back with the rest of the fallen angels. They need to bring them back, it would be interesting to see how he adapted to the angels story arch and basically how the brothers have changed since they last seen him

  12. I see no reason for him to come back…maybe for an episode (flashbacks or a trip to the past or something) but story line wise, let’s just be done with it. And even though I will be super happy to see Bobby again (tore me up inside when he died), I’m just not sure that’s necessary either. I think all these ‘holes’ that the boys have would be a great chance to bring some new people in…(Charlie, for instance, or Benny even). Let’s keep things moving forward, not back.

    • The thing about bringing “new” characters in (and I wouldn’t classify either Charlie OR Benny as new characters) was very much showcased in the second season–there was a huge uproar before the show even started about Ellen and Jo, and the same thing with Ruby and Bela in three. As much as the fans say things like this (and I include myself in this), we kind of have a problem with people coming in and tromping all over the storylines. I mean, we tuned in to see “saving people, hunting things, the family business” and “Dad’s gone on a hunting trip, and he hasn’t been home in a few days.” I don’t really care about the angels, the demons are great as bad buys, and I miss John. I think he’d have a hard time coping with his boys where they are now, but both John and the boys (not to mention JDM and the Js) deserve the chance to flesh out the relationship–that of family–that pretty much drives the entire series, not just the first season.

      • There as a uproar about Bela and Ruby cause of the rumors that CW was making Kripke do T&A Which proved true in Cassidy’s case. She could not at to save herself. In case of Ellen/Jo there was a slight uproar after Jo premiered cause she was supposed to be a love interest for Dean yet after a good premiere ep they started writing her like a dingbat. Fans felt no woman so immature could be a love interest for the guys. They’re still clamoring for Ellen’s return.

  13. It would be great, I know he’s busy but it wld be nice, even just for one episode wld be great!! Even if its the finale. They bringing bobby back so why not John?!

  14. Bring him back for one episode in the final season – JDM seems to busy for anything more.

    • If they could schedule an ep in the final season with the way Carver butchered Season 8 Season 9 could be the final season they could schedule him now. TPTB don’t want him back. They could of arranged it so he could adjust his schedule, they don’t want to.

  15. I would LOVE it if they brought John back and I don’t care HOW they do it! To be able to see the three boys together again would be extremely satisfying!!!

  16. I would love to see Poppa Winchester come back. I could see it for the series finale…John, Mary and the rest of the “passed on” cast members.

  17. Oh GOSH no. Three seasons ago, I’d have said definitely, go for it. But now there’s just no way in (pun intended) HECK I want Carver or any new members of the writing team to handle doing a John Winchester returns story. I feel much better with Kripke’s scripted ending, with John presumably in Heaven (though, I guess, now that’s not such a reward anymore). I like John and the work Kripke did with his character too much to want him around when Kripke isn’t writing.

  18. I’d prefer young John if anything.

  19. its obvious that he would be back cos if dean is the angel and sam is the devil whom exactly did you think was going to be playing god

  20. Dad can go to heaven patrol.
Bring back bobby to run the ship.
& keep the redhead in! :)

    • I agree Bobby all the way

      • Yes to the return of Bobby!

    • Victoria no Bobby hasn’t otherwise they wouldn’t of been so thrown by John’s death. Bobby is a friend and as Dean said family and if he hadn’t noted they didn’t have much left.

  21. The half brother Adam should come back, he is stile in Hell.

    • I dislike Adam. Because I like Sam being the youngest

  22. “Nobody dies in this show, you know; we bring everybody back. So, yeah, we would find a way.”

They really don’t outside of Sam, Dean and Cas. Dead is dead, a character might pop up as a ghost, but they never fully resurrected a dead character outside of Samuel Campbell.

  23. I would honestly love to see John Winchester come back. It would be really cool.

  24. I would honestly love for him to come back! It would be cool

  25. Supernatural is one of my favoret shows . I started watching it in the middle of sesson 1 and was hooked. Im 34 years old kid show or not it rocks. And you should bring back john winchester je brings a sertin kickass vibe to the show and someone needs to keep sam and dean in place.
Thanks for reading my post. Jason Minnix.

  26. John Winchester simply MUST return for at least part of the final season. There is NO possible way to obtain any closure for the boys, or the entire superverse without him. It should all go back to the beginning in order for it to end. I have tons of ideas,
honestly should be writing for this show!!!!

  27. I would love to see John back in the next seasons or even have a comeback with John, Bobby, and Mary all set up to help in a last round fight to set the Biblical story arc to rest. I love this show and seeing the boys well men now reunite with their family for a brief moment to resolve the pain of losing their family abruptly would be 100% gratifying not to mention there are still Aplha monsters, different areas in the world, and rogue hunter groups. Shoot bring back Lucifer and have John come back- face to face- Lucifer can grab John and say “You never loved me! you trapped me and never thought of me as your son” have John’s eyes turn completely white and bam its time for John handle a ass whooping to Luci. Idk I’m a nerd but I would love it.

  28. This upcoming season with the angels falling from heaven could have been the perfect way for them to bring their dad back. Even for just an episode or two. They could have made him an angel or something.
