supernatural season 8 episode 13 Supernatural Season 8 Finale Airs May 15; Castiel Gets Larger Season 9 Role

It’s a Supernatural news twofer this week: The season 8 finale’s May airdate has been revealed, and everyone’s favorite angelic savior, Castiel, will officially be returning for season 9 as a series regular, an upgrade from his current reoccurring guest star role.

With Sam and Dean busy as new Men of Letters, and Sam facing the remainder God’s trails, fans can rest easy in knowing that whatever is going to happen to the Winchester brother’s will happen by May 15, which is when the Supernatural season 8 finale will air.

But no matter what happens in this season’s finale, Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles and, now, Misha Collins will be returning in full force for season 9. Both Padalecki and Ackles signed new contracts last year for seasons 9 and 10, well before the network officially renewed the series, while Collins just recently re-signed.

When Castiel returns in season 9, he will be in many more episodes than fans saw him in during season 8, thanks to Collins’ new contract upgrading him from reoccurring guest star to series regular. Does that mean heaven will have a much larger role next season, or just Castiel?

When Supernatural season 8 comes to an end this May, it’s very likely that God’s trials and the Gates of Hell storylines will be concluded, or at least transitioned into something else. What will likely be left for season 9 is the mysterious Heaven intervention storyline as well as the Men of Letter’s storyline. However these elements play in to next storyline is still unknown, but Castiel’s appearance in more episodes next season is definitely more than just as the Winchester’s Lordly juggernaut.

Now that Supernatural has, for all intents and purposes, turned itself around from any Leviathan confusion, fans are appropriately excited for Sam and Dean’s adventures this season. And if the series’ returning episodes are any example of what’s to come – along with more Castiel next season – then September can’t get here soon enough.

Now what about maybe bringing Bobby back?

  1. Castiel to replace Sam?!
That’s a bit delusional, i mean c’mon Sam and Dean HAVE to be together, they’re bro’s, the best of bro’s…. yadayada.

I’m just so happy to know that Cass will be back soon, I love him so much~
and i think that’s what’s so great about Castiel guys, he’s a somewhat main character, but when he appears on the show, you can’t deny that the views go a bit higher, and if Castiel does die……. well. i think that wouldn’t be a good move from the producers (my obsessionwould dwindle a lot!!! ) so yeah they better not kill him. *pleads to the skies*

    • Amen to that.! When I rewatch episodes of Supernatural, I always find myself watching the ones with Cass in them. Bringing Castiel back as a “star” again, and not some special guest star is the best thing that could happen to the show, but they really need to do something else with the way Dean feels about Cass, it is truly getting very annoying, and taking all the respect and love I have for deans character away. =( Castiel has ALWAYS been there for Dean, even in his “bad” times, he never failed, so I hope they are not just FINALLY bringing him back as a “star” for another season of Dean bashing.! That I couldn’t take. Supernatural is truly my favorite show, EVER… so please don’t ruin it for me now.! =/

      • Ok, Cas went against Dean’s best advice and opened Purgatory, which let nin the Leviathins, which killed Bobby. And of course Cas BROKE SAM’S WALL which almost killed him. And then this season, Cas refused to trust Dean about the angel tablet and look what happened there. Dean bashing Cas? No, Cas is lucky Dean still considers him a friend after all he’s done. Dean never got angry at Cas without good reason.

    • THANK GOD IT’S COMING BACK!!!! IT’S MY FAVORITE SHOW EVER.I LOVE CASTIEL, N BOBBY COMING BACK.I LOVE ACKLES N PADALECKI !!!!! I’AM SO HAPPY IT’S CONTINUING!!!

    • I LOVE THIS SHOW . I WATCH RERUNS EVERYDAY ON NETFLIX N HULU ALWAYS FOR SUPERNATURAL!!!! I LOVE DEAN N SAM BROS LOVE .DEAN HUMOR, N I LOVE THE COOL MUSIC!! I ADORE CASTIEL!!! LOVE THE BOBBY DAD FIGURE ALL OF IT ….KEEP GOING OR I WILL BE CRUSHED..THE WHOLE FORMULA JUST WORKS . THE COOL MUSIC!!! YES PLEASE KEEP CASS ,BOBBY, COMING BACK IS GREAT..!!!

  2. I think Castiel needs to somehow bring Bobby back to life. He’s an angel, anything is possible. I love this show have been watching since episode 1 and hope it even goes more then 10 seasons.

    • As much as I’d love to see Bobby come back and I cried like hell when he died, I respected that they stayed true to their basic rules by not bringing him back because it wasn’t possible due to his bones being burned. However, you mentioned Castiel bringing him back to life and that made me think…..What if Bobby got a promotion and became an angel? An apprentice to Castiel and an aid to boys. Hmmmmm.

      • I like the idea of turning someone into an angel, but check this out, what if it’s not Bobby, what if it’s SAM?
I actually had this theory before this latest episode The Great Escapist, but now my suspicions are only getting stronger. He can hear when he’s around other angels, he can remember really obscure memories, and he said himself that the trails are ‘changing him,’ not, ‘killing him.’
What if they turn Sammy into an angel? It would be something they have never done before, then season 9 can be about Sam dealing with being the first human to ever become an angel, trying to control his powers, he could be trained by Cass, all the other angels could be trying to kill him or would be jealous of him, and Dean would be feeling left out because that would leave him officially the last human on the board, and he could go searching for a way to bring Sam back to human form, especially if the power becomes too much for Sam to handle.

        • As soon as I saw Sam picking up that piece of paper (or maybe it was before that, I don’t remember) and his hand/arm turned white; I knew that he was turning into an angel. I made a blog post about it, but I don’t see many other people coming to this conclusion, or if they are they’re just now coming around to it but no google results come up. Kudos to you, hopefully we’re right! ;)

    • I really hope they don’t bring Bobby back. I love Bobby and he’s a wonderful character but I feel like they need to let that story line go. It’s really getting old watching them grasp at straws as he goes against his very nature as a hunter and allows himself to walk the earth after death, and then putting him in Hell for no good reason? It’s getting super old. They need to put him to rest.

  3. I’d like to say to say to everyone who says they will not be returning for season 9 just because a certain character is on that’s crazy. If you were a true supernatural fan you’d stick by it no matter what. Also how is it fair that just because you don’t like a certain charade the people who do have to suffer without their favorite character. I love Supernatural no matter what they do. I love to see an old character come back but if they don’t I’m okay with that. Supernatural is a great show and I can’t wait to see where season 9 takes it!

  5. I’m so glad the show’s been renewed for a 9th & 10th season, and that Castiel will be a series regular. He adds a lot of character & depth (& humour at times) to the show.

I’m enjoying season 8, and really, really liked Jensen’s intense post-perdition performances. It was amazing and some of the best work he’s ever done on the show.

I do miss Bobby and wouldn’t mind if he was brought back. I’m also a Gabriel fan – those episodes had a delightful, cheeky humour and it would be great to see the archangel again if that was possible.

  6. Since Carver haven’t write an episode since the premiere, I really hope to see an awesome season finale!

  7. I dont think Bobby is to come back. His bones were burnt by the Winchesters.I really like to know what is coming for the next seasons. As far as I know, the Winchesters have struggled with all the bad things, demons, ghosts, werewolves, ghouls, vengeful spirits, angels(not the ones like the Castiel we like),apocalypse, soulles brother etc.now they are dealing closing the gates of hell. And the finale of 8th season is gonna be legendary I guess. My guess is that Lucifer is gonna rise from his cage and the hell is coming back to surface.Since Bobby isnt here, the Winchesters will be in fight without help.
I’d like to see John back on the team but since his bones are gone too,it looks not likely to happen.Anyway, this how must really carry on fellas.

    • Edit:That Lucifer part is for the next seasons.I forgot to seperate the sentence there.

    • They can bring Bobby back, the grandfather, Samuel was brought back from heaven and he was cremated.

  8. We need to find out more about what has been happening in Heaven. What happened to some of the remaining angels, including Joshua (Roger Aaron Brown). Will Bobby find Ash (Chad Lindberg)? Did John and Mary Winchester ever make it upstairs? Will we see Jeffrey Dean Morgan as John Winchester ever again?

    • agreed it would be nice to learn what was going up in heaven and to see jon and bobby come back

  9. I just finished the ‘Taxi Driver’ episode. This show would have made a good season-ender in my opinion. They brought back Bobby Singer and sent him from Purgatory/Hell to Heaven. It looks like the vampire Benny storyline has ended for now, even though they didn’t burn his bones. It is hard to figure out where the Naomi business is heading, but I think the Winchesters are not putting much faith in her story that she is on their side. And where is Kevin and the stone? I guess we will find out in the last few episodes of this season.

    • I loved that episode, one of my favorites in season 8, only thing missing was Cass… and it would have been perfect.I can’t have my favorite episode EVER be one with out Castiel, that would never do.! LOL

  10. Castiel ROCKS!!!!!

  11. There is so many loose ends dangling at present, that given the promising writers we will have good seasons ahead. And in last episode that scene was really terrific when sam comes back. I mean timing expression dialogue everything.just marvellous acting J2.

  13. Crowley may well be another trophy for Sam and Dean. Closin the gates is not gonna be so simple. Remember people Crowley either murdered kevin and took his research or kidnapped him and his work to parts unknown. Before that he had not translated the last trial also before translation he decides to hide it.So now when Sam&Dean find out what really happened and if he is with Crowley alive they don’t have much time for a rescue, now if kev is dead they will have to come a

cross another prophet then they have to find the tablet & nobody forget that
Lucifer and Michael are still there and i have afeeling that not all of The Heavenly Host wish to see Michael & Lucifer locked in
hell forever there are still tons of angel who still want their apocalypse i think that is the only way to truly end this amazing series if it HAS to end
i think they pack in another 5 seasons at least. one way or another i don’t see the gates closin anytime soon( sorry Sammy)

  14. Does anyone NOT care that the arch-angel Michael is still in hell? When are the boys going to get him? I’ve been waiting for this story-line for years!

    • No, not so much. Michael was a bit of a villain for attempting to coerce first Dean (unsuccessfully)then Adam (successfully) to be his vessel. So I’m not too bothered….

    • I don’t care so much about Michael as Adam. Like wtf. They totally left him in the cage and never looked back. So much for ‘family’.

      • To be fair, Dean did ask Death to get Adam out of the cage when he was retrieving Sam’s soul but Death said that he could only do one so Dean chose Sam. Adam was not just forgotten.

  15. I love supernatural and would you believe I’m still enjoying the reruns?? So happy to hear that there’s a season 9 & 10!! I want to see gabriel , bobby, bennie and john back.. also want to see the husband / wife witches back !!

  16. there s been some great stuff goin on this season really enjoyin it finale should be good there s no sign of dean on the promo for finale ep which worries me hope crowleys not got him to stop sam from sealing the gate of hell o well will have to wait i guess really looking forward to season s 9 and 10.

  17. We finally get an interesting character like benny and you dont keep him? Im glad misha collins is back but why this charlie character when you found a character that the fans respond to so strongly? Not getting it, sorry!

  18. i love you castiel!!
    please come back!!

  19. I was worried that Season 8 was the Finale of the show. So glad they’ll be back in Sept. AND for Season 9 & 10.
8 was a pretty good season, I enjoyed it. Better than 6. Way too dark.

  20. I know they burnt his bones. But I really do miss Adam. Mabey if there is anyway they can bring him back that would be awesome! I am so exited!!!! Cas is back! Yaaaaaaa! :)

  21. I change the Spanish soap Oprah for supernatural lol,I watch the 149 episodes I am waiting for this guys to come with more great show

  22. i think series 9 should be about dean and sam along with castiel fighting there way into hell killing crowely and i feel there there needs to be a story line featuring god and the search for him and maybe end off series 10 with one last battle with lucifer or another big name and ending with both dean and sam going to heaven and becoming angels.

  23. also does any1 agree that series 4 was the best series of supernatural?

  24. Very well written

  25. First i want to say that me and my family love the show and are total fans but i am very unpleased at how this seasons finale ended. I mean really how much further can they go with this storyline. I never want this show to end but i feel they kind of spun out of control on the last few episodes of this season and i was wondering how they were going to squueze everything into this last episode. Then as i watched it i see that they are continuing this storyline. Other seasons they at least closed it to an extent so you werent at the edge of your seat saying “why did they end it with a open ending!” None the less i cant wait for next season but the writers better do their homework because its getting sketchy now.

  26. Super pumped to learn of season 9 and 10! Bring Bobby back!

  27. YESSSS!!! FINALLY MORE Cas and i hope will see more Dean and Cas – they are so funny, amazing.

  28. I still think they should bring ash and Gabriel back. I love them!!!!

  29. Bring Bobby back AS A SEASON REGULAR cast member again!!!! Season 8 was AWESOME imho. And not because Season 7 sucked so bad (due to some poor writing choices). I’d put Season 8 in my fav top 3 Seasons of the show, I thought it was THAT good. But we need Bobby back, big time. You can see most people who like the show want this if you google about the character lol.

It’d be good to see Benny again, and learn he still had a part to play in what was coming. I’d personally like to see that…Feels like his character could go further too. And it’d be good to see more of Jo, Ellen and Pamela in heaven again. I’d love to see a scene involving Rufus and Ash sharing some Johnny Walker Blue Label up there with Bobby lol.

I’d also find it interesting if God brought Anna back. She was rebellious in a similar fashion to Castiel…that could make for some interesting stories…her questioning why she was back, and why God had brought her back and given her another chance. After all, it was Michael who killed her…and he didn’t exactly turn out to be an innocent, did he? The only Archangel of any merit actually seems to have been Gabriel, who liked humans, like Castiel and Anna.
