The tale of the Winchester brothers will continue for another year, as The CW announced today that they have officially renewed Supernatural for season 8 – but could this be Supernatural’s final bow?
Despite an unconventional seventh season, news of Supernatural’s renewal isn’t likely to shock fans of the series. With news of showrunner Sera Gamble being replaced with Syfy’s Being Human showrunner Jeremy Carver – who formerly served as a producer on Supernatural - it left little debate about its chances for renewal.
For fans, their concern lies largely in what the focus of the series will be, as it heads into its eighth year on the air. Supernatural’s season 7 nemesis, the Leviathans, appropriately became a “C” storyline rather than a direct focus, fans began to wonder what had happened to the series they faithfully watched for many years.
Instead of an overarching story that was driven by each episode, Supernatural’s seventh season quickly became disjointed with its storytelling. While nobody will argue against shifting focus away from the “evil” Leviathans and their intentions of taking over the world corporate-style, a litany of self-contained episodes that didn’t really go anywhere wasn’t really much of an upgrade.
Fortunately, Supernatural has never really been a series where continuous issues brought concerns about renewal. With mistakes largely occurring few and far between, fans of the series are typically more forgiving than fans of other shows.
Even if Supernatural can turn things around and make an amazing eighth season, could this be the series’ final run – no matter what?
When Supernatural stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles resigned their contracts for the series last year, it was for two additional seasons (7 and 8). So after next season, both actors would have to renew their contracts.
While only Ackles and Padalecki can say for sure, it’s becoming more difficult to believe that they would want to continue the series into its ninth or tenth year. And after this season, there are certainly some fans who don’t feel like it even should. Of course that doesn’t mean that it won’t – I suppose it’s something we’ll just have to wait and see in the Supernatural season 7 finale.
Now we just have to figure out a way to get Castiel (Misha Collins) back… and Bobby (Jim Beaver) back from being dead.

I think the leviathans were hated as both a storyline and bad guy is because deep down we all know that real big business is run by more evil creatures corporate greed and psychopaths who make leviathans look pansy in comparison. Let’s get some proper evil in S8

yea it is a long waite,the show rocks my fav also…
I hope that it will at least run for 10 seasons with the focus returning to the brothers relationship and “The family business” I wasn’t a big fan of this season with the whole Leviathan drama..the writer’s would be smart if they return to the weekly monster’s as they did in the beginning with somewhat of a continuing story line…The focus on just one creature was somewhat boring, as a huge and loyal fan I enjoyed seeing the brothers having to face a slew of differing monsters each week, as for renewals there have been plenty of other less impressive/entertaining shows that have made it to 10 seasons therefore if one show deserves it, it would be Supernatural after all each week they are accumulating more and more fans..I know this to be true as everyone I’ve had watch has fallen in awe of the show and soon consider themselves loyal fans….
I completely agree with your input on the show going back to the way it used to be. Focusing on Lucifer was an amazing couple of seasons but you can’t try to outdo Satan and try to focus on just one monster after that whole heaven and hell thing. Bringing new breeds of monsters to us weekly is the way to go!!:-)
I think that most of us fans would watch Supernatural right up until the guys are in an old folks home if it was still on the air. We’re pretty devoted to the show and the guys. Seasons 6 and 7 made some mistakes, but trying to trump the apocalypse can be pretty tricky. I hated the Levi story only because I don’t like blatant political statements in my television shows, that’s what the news is for. I think that they turned the season around by “The Born Again Identity” and it only got better from there. We were left in a spot that has lots of potential for awesomeness and I can’t wait to see where they go with it.

I truthly don’t think it should of carryed on this far to be honest with you, just random excuses to carry it on i think, perhaps in s8 it should just end with somthing meaningful for the brothers?
this season actully bored me to tears, random story’s and i felt cheated that the main bad guys only got a few episodes in it espchally dick…
I don’t know about anyone else, but I am still waiting for the “Michael and Lucifer” mega showdown. I need to see the gates opened, and a three episode melee of blood, destruction, and half the world burnt to s***. At the very least one of the archangels need to get unleashes into purgatory and waste some monsters and bring Dean back to earth.
Yes I totally agree I always thought I wondered if they just let them two out the cage what would happen because Season 5 was to originally supposed to be the last season I think it would have ended great there but I’m happy I still get to see my boys, but also if their in purgatory* what if they just ran into the other creatures that they’ve killed maybe Ruby, or Aziel The Yellow Eyes Demon. I don’t know there’s so many good possibilities and room for the show to become Great. Come on Season 8!

i agree, although we ol liked the battle between angelz and demonz bt this leviathan stuff is soo cool…… i mean d brotherz havent found any way to stop the gruesome creaturez!!! bt i wnt castiel n bobby back they made d group complete bt itz also makez supernatural intense at d same time… d brotherz were loosing their group people or more family n hw wil dey bring ‘em bak, etc!!!

In the last season why couldn’t you just bring back Jess and Lisa where at the end Jess is brought back and So is John, bobby, and all the hunters back. And even Mary can be brought back or something that way it isn’t a total loss to the boys lol.

I think this show is one of the best of the year and definitely it should go to season 10. But i would have to agree with some of the fans to just focus the brothers on one kind of monster was a big drop. Hopefully the next season brings more excitement and the end of season 7 is a big hope.
As much as I still do enjoy the show, I feel that it has lost it’s “magic” a little during the 7th season. And I am actually really annoyed with the cliff hanger of the season. Since Dean has already been to hell, toss him into purgatory, leaving Sam alone to try and figure out everything on his own? I am very curious of where an 8th season would go, and how Dean would escape purgatory, if he even could. Ever since they opened the gates of Hell, the show kind of got wonky. This is just my personal opinion, take it as you want.
Hey didn’t have the budget to ever really show He’ll, but Purgatory is another story. Every monster Dean ever killed could potentially be there, and Dick Roman and Bobby Singer, too! Did Cas desert Dean there or go for help? What danger is Sam in? Is he facing Leviathans still alive? Demons roaming Dick’s office building? Sam and Dean desperately need each other, but how will they find each other? How many episodes will they be separated?
The dangers are many for both Winchester brothers, with season 8 looking very promising with Jeremy Carver as the new man in charge.
I can’t wait!

I have to agree with “zero cool’s” comment. I thought Season 7 was exciting and a surprise change from what was becoming to be a formula. Moreover, I thought it relevant. Rarely do viewers get a metaphorical glimpse of the real world, albeit, executed via drama with concern to what corporations are putting in our food. Light has been shed in recent years on what Montesano, Dupont, etc., have been doing with genetic food tampering, so it was high time this uncovering trickled down into mainstream entertainment. I’m glad, proud even, that SN writers had the insight to present this to its fans and viewers.
It left me even more unlikely to continue eating fast food
And if a show can act as catalyst for change, then in my opinion it’s worthy of spending the time to watch it WHILE being entertained.

I thought the season premier for season 7 should have been the finale for season 6, it would have made a good cliff hanger. Just like the season finale of season 7, I was left wondering if Castiel left Dean. I was also a little disappointed in seeing Castiel in this state of “not liking conflict”. I also do have a big question about Bella, when she had made a deal with the crossroads demon. It showed that the hell hounds were coming after her, but never showing she died, I wonder if they will have her pop in in season 8, I have been waiting for her to call up Dean…
Supernatrual is the most amazing show on Tv i hope there is atleast a season 10 i love it so much, i cant even explain.
I dont watch tv unless its on History channel or NatGeo.But this show had me hooked after the pilot aired I hope there is more to come.Im gonna be upset if its gone after season 8.. with any luck they can keep it goin as long as the Simpsons have..

I’ve been watching the Winchester’s from day one and I love the show deeply but it’s lost it’s edge. After season 8 it should end! I’m sorry, but the isn’t good without Castiel’s funny one-liners or Bobby’s idget’s…
i think season 6 ending was pretty good, but they should have focused on castiel as a god and the winchesters dealing with it.

It was so sad to see Bobby departing in the Season 7 finale..yeah he was a ghost and stuff but his absence will really be felt
Hope there is some way for him to return in season 8..the show and his “idjits” sound incomplete without him..
At the same time, YAY!!! Cass is back!!! Although he seems to be a bit “off his rocker” its always great having him back..I really missed him this season.. It was amusing seeing him in the “lost his marbles” form, and well, he did seem to be fine towards the end of the last episode, didn’t he?

I started watchin Supernatural from its 6th season. I found it amazing. I read some comments that season 6 was not as good as the previous seasons. I dnt believe it till I really saw Season 5. Season 6 was great but not as good as season 5, I loved it anyways. I have to admit season 7 got a little boring, Supernatural is incomplete without Castiel i guess! It became better with Misha’s return but the story was kinda lost this season. It was good but wasn’t as interesting as earlier seasons. I hope Supernatural comes back with a bang in season 8.
If Sam and Dean were able to come back from the dead Bobby should too. The supernatural journey involves Bobby too. It will not be the same without him.
i actually thought season 7 was better than season 6 which i thought was totally disjointed. talk about jumping the shark, the entire season 6 i felt they spent “jumping the shark” every single episode, from sams coming back with no soul to their maternal grandfather turning up out of the blue with pretty much no explanation. dont get me wrong i still love the show but i think its lost its way a bit since eric kripke handed over the reigns to sera gamble. hopefully with jeremy carver coming back as showrunner we might get back to the old days with a pretty much perfect mix of weekly monsters and mythology episodes. but im just digressing here really i know il end up watching it whatever the case, its just too damn cool to miss!!!!
I really liked season 7 actually because it had more feeling and action in it. I mean the whole thing with Castiel claiming to be God and then letting the Leviathan’s out. Then having Bobby die then become a ghost, then be completely gone, that was like that saddest part ever. Then having Sam finally crack and go to a mental hospital then having Castiel come back which was the best part (Personally I think the reason ppl thought the show got, for lack of a better word, boring was because he wasn’t there. The “3″ of them make the show.) and save Sam. Then having Cass crack and become kinda crazy but at the very end become normal….it was like an emotional roller coaster and that’s what was great about it.
I hope that this show has a respectable ending! If either of the two main characters r replaced the show will immediately be not worth watching. So please end the show right!
