‘Supernatural’ Renewed For Season 8; Will it Be its Last?

1 year ago by

Supernatural Season 8

The tale of the Winchester brothers will continue for another year, as The CW announced today that they have officially renewed Supernatural for season 8 – but could this be Supernatural’s final bow?

Despite an unconventional seventh season, news of Supernatural’s renewal isn’t likely to shock fans of the series. With news of showrunner Sera Gamble being replaced with Syfy’s Being Human showrunner Jeremy Carver – who formerly served as a producer on Supernatural - it left little debate about its chances for renewal.

For fans, their concern lies largely in what the focus of the series will be, as it heads into its eighth year on the air. Supernatural’s season 7 nemesis, the Leviathans, appropriately became a “C” storyline rather than a direct focus, fans began to wonder what had happened to the series they faithfully watched for many years.

Instead of an overarching story that was driven by each episode, Supernatural’s seventh season quickly became disjointed with its storytelling. While nobody will argue against shifting focus away from the “evil” Leviathans and their intentions of taking over the world corporate-style, a litany of self-contained episodes that didn’t really go anywhere wasn’t really much of an upgrade.

Fortunately, Supernatural has never really been a series where continuous issues brought concerns about renewal. With mistakes largely occurring few and far between, fans of the series are typically more forgiving than fans of other shows.

Even if Supernatural can turn things around and make an amazing eighth season, could this be the series’ final run – no matter what?

When Supernatural stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles resigned their contracts for the series last year, it was for two additional seasons (7 and 8). So after next season, both actors would have to renew their contracts.

While only Ackles and Padalecki can say for sure, it’s becoming more difficult to believe that they would want to continue the series into its ninth or tenth year. And after this season, there are certainly some fans who don’t feel like it even should. Of course that doesn’t mean that it won’t – I suppose it’s something we’ll just have to wait and see in the Supernatural season 7 finale.

Now we just have to figure out a way to get Castiel (Misha Collins) back… and Bobby (Jim Beaver) back from being dead.

  1. Just change the background music/ soundtrack. It has gotten really goofy the last couple of seasons. The classic rock theme worked real well so just go back to it. That will instantly increase quality of the show. As far as the direction goes… yea heaven, hell, purgatory, angels, demons…. its all been done, but that doesn’t mean the show has to suck or be boring. Just crank up the horror factor to the level it used to be at and things will be great. The Winchester Bros. are awesome make use of them and stop trying to do too much.

  2. I am a huge fan of Supernatural but I feel that the show needs to wrap up at some point. Whether it’s S8 or S10, I hope they’ll give the story a proper ending.

    • Boo heck no supernatural must never end!

    • My idea for a fun ending would be for the Winchester boys to go to the set of True Blood and take on all of those many freaky creatures during their final year (Which might be next if they don’t get a better story line too)…..All these big bad Vamps get put down by the baddest hunters….Now that would be fun….

  3. honestly i love this show and i want it to go into at least 10 seasons like all the great shows do

    • totally with you there- hoping for an amazing season eight to set up possible future seasons

  4. Supernatural Fans I have a question,
I’ve recently started to watch the shoe on Netflix and I’m only about 6 or 7 episodes in but I’m having trouble getting into it.
So I’ll ask, is it always ghost of the week episodes or is there a point when it will get deeper into a over-arching story?

    • thats how it starts with small stuff but they have pretty nice arcs starting when sam and dean find their dad and after season one theyll be main storylines

      • This question honestly made me laugh…..The overarching stoyline is about as big as they come. Keep watchin you wont be dissapointed

    • It hits the fan about halfway through the first season, that’s when the plot begins to pick up. The real big plotlines don’t really start until the second season and then there’s the infamous/famous Angel arc that starts in season 4 and “ends” in season 6.

    • Obviously! Just keep watching, and you’ll see how great it gets! Its a great show! and it always be! Its the show on the CW, and the best fantasy show of the year! keep on watching, you will enjoy it!

    • Kevin, my advice to you is to try to watch the show from season 1. It will give you a better perspctive. Because the first five seasons were great. It was it’s best through 1 to 4. I think it will be good in season 8. Just stick with it an then judge.

      • perspective–woops

        • Actually I would love the rumored story of the account of season six and seven to be someone’s dream. That way it would make better sense of it being so jumbled. It would make sense if it was Sam’s messed up imagination after being totally pulled from hell by Castiel. Considering it was Sam who wanted Dean to go to Lisa. And coming back souless could have been a fear of his. Along with other fears like Bobby’s death. That way seasons six and seven could be somewhat vindicated. But then again some of the episodes weren’t so bad as stand alones.

    • They start out slow to introduce to the viewers what they’re (the boys and hunters) all about. Frankly, I didn’t get into the show until the end of season 1 and I’ve been trapped ever since.

    • I didn’t get into the show after a few first episodes and pretty much dismissed it at that point. Got back into it in S3 and rewatched all of it since.

Really, S1 is a bit of a mixed bag, but it starts getting into the mythology around half-way through the season.

    • Dont worry the show will go much more in depth. Just wait and see

  5. I love this show, but the storyline in this season could have been better. Kinda hope it goes on forever, but with weaker and weaker storylines, I would like to see it go out on a high.

  6. I’m looking foward for the show to end at least on season 9, maybe season 10. Its just that I can get enough of Supernatural!

  7. Don’t end it on season 8! Please!

  8. I’m happy for the show to continue for several more seasons if this new showrunner can do something great with it. Gamble did an OK job, but nothing has ever really felt consistent, and with such long breaks between Leviathan episodes, there never really been a feeling of danger this season either. So, if someone else can start a new fire, there’s a lot of life left. Obviously the CW are hoping for the same thing or they would have announced S8 as the last.

  9. Can’t* get enough of supernatural

  10. I watched the first 5 seasons like a good little fanboy. I waited for season 6 to prove itself. I watched the first two episodes of season 7.

I’m not terribly excited about an 8th season, to be frank.

    • Popularity has it’s downfall. The overall story planned from the beginning was only to season five, after that it was supposed to end. The show was so popular they couldn’t just let it go, and it shows, too. Season six you can tell they were making it up as they went.

      • Yeah, it’s clear they weren’t planning season six all that well but I’m sure it’s going to be an amazing eighth season if they plan it to end. Personally, I hope it’s like CSI and gets to season ten or whatever, but if this is the last season, they will do it justice I’m sure.

  11. I still love the show and there have been several episodes that have been rememicent of the first or second season. I do hope it has a proper farewell season to wrap up everything properly instead of pulling the plug out of nowhere.

  12. After slogging through these past two lackluster seasons, I wish the show had ended at the end of season 5. I have tiny bit of hope that Jeremy Carver can turn things around in season 8, but he has a tough job ahead of him to reverse the damage that Gamble did by killing off so many great characters and sucking the life and fun out of Dean and Sam.

  13. I hope the show doesn’t end after next season because I just now finished catching up to the series on Netflix. I do agree that the show’s gotten pretty stale

  14. I will be faithful to the end. No show is consistently good. I used to love The Big Bang Theory and a couple years into the show, I felt it was lacking something. Too much Sheldon, and the others were more the butts of jokes than the smart guys they were supposed to be. Now I love the show, and the addition of the gals.

Supernatural needs to get back the team that made us love hunters. Quit killing them all off.

  15. started watching the sixth season. only seen about 5or6 episodes. looks good till now ,when does it start to detoriate

  16. i love the show to death im a die hard fan i am but im mean this season seven has ben the worst one ever they need to end it they have run out of ideas i mean there was one wear there was a ballerina dancing and she spun to fast and her feet exploded they ran it into the ground when they made season six im sorry thats my opinion and im not going to change it

  17. I’m relieved Supernatural is returning for an eighth season, not only because I love the show, but because hopefully it can undue some of the damage done over the past seventh season with its unfocused story lines, boring villain (Leviathan), killing off of fan favorites, etc. I am hopeful that Jeremy Carver taking over will get Supernatural back on track again. I don’t feel fans should give up on Supernatural, simply because they disliked season seven. A new showrunner means new hope and a possible better future for the show.

That said, if they do get the show back on track and with Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, Misha Collins, and Jim Beaver ALL on board (if they don’t bring Misha and Jim BOTH back, I will not be happy), then I see no reason why the show could not continue beyond season eight. If, both Jensen and Jared wish to continue.

  18. I thnk the guys would all come back if offered. It’s a steady paycheck, they’ve said they’re comfortable with the crew and set, and they can still make films when they’re on haitus. The Leviathan were supposed to be indestructible, but you can’t have villains that can’t be destroyed. So they come came up with the borax thing? In any case, it could have been a good storyline but they kinda dropped the ball there. I would prefer, and I know some people didn’t like the angel thing, to see Lucifer break free, and some wrap up with the whole god, angels and heaven storyline. It seemed to just….stop. Tonight we may see some angels return though.

  19. Please let it even continue to the 20th season..don’t know what i’ll do without watching supernatural and all its demons, monsters..love you dean and sam

  20. After I watched the first episode of season six, I was so disappointed, I cried. Subsequent episodes, with the exception of “Weekend at Bobby’s”, did little to make me feel better. A few were good, some even terrific, but SUPERNATURAL had lost something for me, and writing my columns for Winchester Family Business and http://www.moogi.com became more of a chore than the labor of love they had been in previous seasons. What had Sera and her writers done to my beloved show?

Season seven was only a hair better, but nowhere near the level of the first five seasons, and Bobby’s death was a huge gaffe. Leaving Sam and Dean with NO ONE seemed so wrong, and killing off both Bobby AND Cas too much. I was glad that Sam got his soul restored, and pleased to see the brothers’ bond resurrected, even if the bantering and rock music seemed lacking. I also miss the Impala and find it hard to believe Dean isn’t working to put “Baby” back on the road.

I’m fervently hoping that, with, Jeremy Carver as show runner, SPN will return to its glory days. He knows the Winchesters and what we, the audience, want and need.

    Love,
    Robin

  21. I love this show, but the Leviathan arc is a joke. Somehow, the writers need to figure out a way to get rid of them totally and start a new, much better, storyline. It’s time for the show to come to an end, and they need to do it by having Michael and Lucifer escape, and the final 2-hour show should be God coming back and fixing everything; Dean needs to finally settle down (like he was at the end of season 5) and Sam needs to go back to college and get his degree. Castiel should become an arch-angel and Bobby needs to finally come to rest in heaven. Great show but shows have to end at some point.

    • Would love for the show to end that way

    • I don’t want Bobby to stay dead. Castiel resurrected him when Samifer killed him at the end of season 5; why can’t he do it again? He seems to still have all his angelic powers, so why not? It just seems wrong for Bobby to have died in the first place, Sam and Dean love and need him.

      • I’ve thought about why Cas couldn’t bring Bobby back now but in season 5 didn’t he touch Bobby to bring him back? I can’t remember fully to be honest. But I have wondered if he wouldn’t be able to be brought back because the boys already burned his body, its all the flask now. I hope they bring him back too. He has been awesome on the show and honestly I didn’t want to watch the show without him. Was happy Jim was back on the show but having him as a ghost and have him “turn” is just wrong on so many levels. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that somehow they will fix this nightmare of a season.

  22. Season 8 should be the last. I prefer show to not beat themselves to death and end when its right.

For the series finale, I want to see them tackle the biggest question. Who, and where, is God? Why did he abandon Heaven, why are the Winchesters so important to Him (first supposed to be the vessels of Angels, then allowed to circumvent biblical fate), and what was really His master plan?

  23. This is undoubtedly one of my favorite shows all time. I didn’t get into it until the end of season 3….I actually watched the last few episodes, then I said to myself, cool show, let me the Season 4 premiere….totally blown away and I instantly went back and watched all of seasons 1-3 within a few weeks time.

Season 1, had definitely a slow start and was lacking a strong overarching plot…but when the Winchester boys meet up with their father, things start to pick up…
Season 2, picked up the plot and the pace a lot, but it wasn’t until season 3 where the show took off, because season 3 was a whole big race against the clock type of season
Seasons 4/5 were of EPIC proportions….near flawless, from the first episode on you will be continually blown away. Seasons 4/5 had no limits and anything could happen… I cant believe some of the places the show went to….Furthermore, the emotions in those 2 seasons are at an all time high and you can really feel for Dean (and Sam)

Jensen Acles (Dean) did some great acting in seasons 4/5 (which is why I thought he would have been a perfect fit for Captain America way back when)

Now, season 6, began as a total mess and the story’s direction was terrible. It did pick up by the end but ultimately was the show’s weakest season. This season, aside from the whole Dean killed Sam’s childhood friend story arc, has been pretty decent…..I mean yea the Laviathans have really not been implemented well into the show but we have gotten some good standalone episodes and have met some interesting new characters along the way.

My opinion though, season 5 should have been it and would had put an unforgettable end to an unforgettable show….but that didnt happen so now, I saw claim next season as the show’s last and end it something that will blow us away… bring back Lucifer for one last showdown and find a way to get God involved, even if its not him as a person, but find a way to bring him in to help in some form

  24. i love this show i hope it goes to season 10 jensen and jared are amazing i like to see castiel and bobby back .to me i hope the show never ends i am so happy it will be a season 8.

  25. My sons and I have been fans of Supernatural from the first episode. The arc, the storyline, the writers, producers, directors, all can change as long as the Winchester Brothers remain. It’s their interactions that I look forward to each week (and how they deal with what’s thrown at them)and they are the reason this show remains a fan favorite. I will faithfully continue to watch every episode for as long as it’s on the air.

  26. I never much cared about the big picture story arcs. I very much prefer stand-alone episodes chock-ful with entertaining interaction between the brothers and other characters. I’m happy about every season they will throw at us, although I do hope they will wrap it up before it goes X-Files on us. I don’t know if I can take another Dogget/Reyes situation. ;)

    • I hope the show reach 10 seasons, just to beat the X-files, haha.

  27. Are you fans crazy?! why would you want Supernatural to end on season 8!? A succesful show like SPN, should endure at least 9 or 10 seasons, besides a new production staff has been hired, including the showrunner, with a new outstanding producer and writer (Jeremy Carver), and new crew with the big chances of making an AWESOME season 8, and high chances to look for a renewal next year. I’d agree if the show has to end on season 9, but please don’t say the show should end on season 8 without even watching it. I’m sure Carver would find a way to write an end as great or better than Swan song, I mean, I know the show could have ended by then, but we would have missed some great episodes, like “The French Mistake”, “Frontierland”, “Party On, Garth”, and recently “The Girl with the Dungeons and Dragons Tatto”, Great episodes, I’m looking foward to see more like those.

  28. I think the show should end on season 9, and the ending must narrated by God saying that those 9 long years was some kind of test for Sam and Dean, to see if they were capable to keep fighting until the end, with all the obstacles on the way, with the death of their parents and some beloved friends, they fight demons, angels, monsters, beat the devil and teach people that nobody should never give up, cause in life nothing is really impossible.

  29. I think the show should end on season 9, and the ending must narrated by God saying: “Most you probably think that these 9 years of hunting, fighting, suffering, sadness, happiness, fear, and war was a test for Sam and Dean, this was no test, this was a lesson for the who knew them, the people who believed in them, and the people who didn’t to learn that too common guys, well, not so common, haha, lose their parents, friends, loves, but there is one little thing they never left out, that kept them going for all these years; hope, life keeps moving, you gotta move with it, no matter what”. The last episode should have a scene with Sam and Dean getting ready for another hunt.

    • As long as the show ends with BOTH brothers alive, I’ll be okay with the ending. I was very upset to think that Eric Kripke’s original plan was to leave Sam in a cage in Hell, fighting Michael and Lucifer for eternity while Dean made a pseudo-happy life with Ben and Lisa, drinking until his liver gave out.

Those hard-working, sacrificing heroes deserve better! If they can’t leave the hunting life, let the last episode have Sam and Dean heading out together on another hunt, driving Baby on a back road while cool rock music plays in the background.
