It appears that fans of Supernatural will be following the adventures of Sam and Dean Winchester through their paranormal conflicts for at least one more year.

While television’s favorite brotherly duo are currently battling the repercussions of the Apocalypse, The CW is focusing on the future of this successful Friday night series…and as of now, the future looks good!

Speaking with E! Online, CW president Dawn Ostroff revealed:

“We haven’t officially picked anything up yet, but [Supernatural] is doing so well—and it’s doing better on Friday night than it was on Thursday night—so I can’t imagine we won’t pick it up.

“We haven’t started talking about next year, but I’d be shocked if we didn’t pick it up.”

As Ostroff noted, nothing is official. Fortunately, when a television network president says that a particular show is doing so well that they’d be “shocked” if it wasn’t picked up, the whole notion of it being “official” is really a moot point.

Of course, one has to ask: If The CW is so interested in renewing Supernatural for seventh season, what – if anything – could prevent this series for coming back? Simply put, Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles.

Follow the completion of Supernatural’s current season, both Padalecki and Ackles’ contracts are up. While both have attempted to transition into more theatrical rolls, Padalecki and Ackles haven’t given the impression that they’re through with the characters, yet.

With Supernatural conventions being held almost every weekend around the world (Many of which Padalecki and Ackles attend), these two lead actors will now be put in a position where they have to make a decision that may impact their acting careers in the future (read: typecasting). While Padalecki and Ackles may love working on Supernatural, one or both of them may feel the need to move on from this 6-year-old series.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that Warner Bros. and The CW won’t be able to tempt Padalecki and Ackles into re-signing. Even though Supernatural has a somewhat limited budget and an appropriate salary raise probably isn’t an available option, there’s always the possibility of Padalecki and Ackles becoming executive producers on the series they helped make a hit.

Promoting lead actors into the role of executive producer is something that is often done on series where budgetary constraints make it impossible to provide them with a substantial salary raise. You may be wondering why someone would become an executive producer on the series, instead of taking a salary raise. I’ll give you a hint: it’s not all about creative control.

As an actor in a series, you receive a set salary per episode (sometimes bonuses are built in for exceptional rating performances) and without going too deep into it, you’ll receive residuals from syndication, worldwide distributions, and perhaps some merchandising and DVD sales.

As an executive producer, you’ll receive a similar payout to the actors (although usually more elements are included), but it’ll be a larger amount. So, if an actor was getting 10 cents per every DVD sold, an executive producer may receive $1 (though these amounts I’m pitching are completely fictional, especially in relation to the difference in amount between the two).

That being said, Supernatural is one of the most lucrative franchises on television. With a series of Supernatural novels from HarperCollins, a mini-series of Supernatural comic books from Wildstorm (DC Comics), a pen & paper role-playing game, trading cards, shirts, posters, calendars, figurines AND a Japanese anime spin-off series, there’s a lot of incentive in becoming an executive producer of the sereis.

Of course, we’ll just have to wait and see what Jared and Jensen do.

  1. My addiction to Supernatural started from my younger brother who would always quote the show and I wouldn’t get it. I soon started watching the series during my Christmas break from college THIS LAST CHRISTMAS. Lame I know. I watched a few episodes here and there the last two years but all Christmas break I watched it. From Season one Episode one to the finale of Season 5. I HAD to start buying the episodes from I-Tunes right when I finished. Season 6 was just not too exciting. It was all: Sam has no soul, the Mother is back from Purg., and Castiel going crazy. There really wasn’t any real demon fighting episodes or anything. It was pretty blah. Except for the last few episodes of course, H.P. Lovecraft. I had to look him up. My brother and I spent an hour researching Lovecraft and I even ordered a book with The Haunter of the Dark in it so we could read it this summer. I love the ties with actual history; even thought Lovecraft actually dies from cancer, malnutrition, and Bright’s disease. I found the history appealing and interesting. I just hope Jared and Jensen stick through at least one more season for a BIG BANG ending. I have only watched one full series and that was Charmed; which ended perfectly (as any series should, honestly). Why can’t this one?

    • Hey Christina,

I have never missed an episode of Supernatural since I started watching. I have always loved shows that deal with the Supernatural like Charmed. I own all the seasons of Charmed too and I agree that it had a great ending. It would be nice if Sam and Dean could have a nice ending also. I really hope they hang in there and finish the Supernatural tv series with a BANG!! It’s cool that you have actually done some research on the characters in Supernatural. Did you know that there is actually a demon or something named Lilith? I was doing some research for one of my college classes on religion and I found some information on it. I wonder if the Supernatural writers knew about that. Anyway, it’s a great show and hopefully we will see another season.

  2. I think season seven is deserved it has been a long ride for the winchester boys, but I fear that there is no place to go to after this season! They have toppled just about everything there was. And what concerns me the most is that this whole dark castiel thing! Wasn’t the prophet from season 5 really god? Can anyone help me understand why is missing now? With that being said it is one of the best shows.

  3. I LOVE this showw!!! I almost started crying when i heard they are making a season 7!!! I was sooo happy!!! Ive got ALL the seasons on DVD and I have posters in rooom!! I can not pick a fav out of Sam and Dean BUT i can say this muchh that Sam is the most Sweetest and Dean is the most funniest.

    • I think Supernatural is one of the best shows on television! It’s smart, funny, scary, heart-warming, gut-wrenching, and just plain AMAZING!! I’ve never been this excited to see a new season of any other show…Not even ‘Friends’!!! Congratulations to the cast & crew! Here’s to season 7 being the best season so far! *clink*

  4. I really like the show. It’s funny and perfect. I like the episode where Dean and Sam was taken into an alternate reality. COOL!

DON’T CANCEL THIS SHOW. Sam and Dean are terrific. Great episodes are ahead…keep it coming.

  6. I have been watching supernatural from 8 years old, been so into it for 4 years and LOVE IT. I now so much about it. You can say I am Brety gothy. Have a huge crush on cas and feel sorry Sam. My favorite episode was when Sam got married I was just as surprised as dean was. Jared and Jensen are the best and funniest guys ever.

  7. I’ve been watching this show since day one. It’s awesome. The lore is absolutely on point. I feel like this show could go on for quite a while. The only only show I’ve been hooked on like this is True Blood and even thought that’s much newer Supernatural is still my LOVE. Friday I stand people up just so I can catch Supernatural, it’s all good because there’s always Saturday ;). Those men are perfect on this show and I wish they’d never go away lol. I just want Castiel and Bobby to come back!!

  8. 10EPISODES!!!!!!!! that is not a season, what are they doing??!!??

  9. Anthony, thank you for a well written and informative article. Every time I try to find some sensible info on the show and the actors, I always seem to end up on some hysterical fansite so this was a blessed relief. I am currently watching Series 4, and I admire Eric Kripke’s use of music to underscore various stories. Whenever I hear a song on the radio I think, “This would be great for one of those episodes dealing with the brothers’ turbulent relationship!” Here in New Zealand, not many people have heard of this show (it screens at 10.30pm on Friday nights) but I am busily spreading the word! Keep up the good work, Anthony.

  10. Does anyone know when Season 7 will air on NZ TV???? Please??? This is a desperate fangirl here!!!!
