The Supernatural season 4 finale, titled Lucifer Rising created a great collection of plot lines that were drawn together in a neat little tidy knot. With this, a freaking big new plot line evolved from last night’s episode.
The show opened to a background theme to the tune of a classic Kansas song titled Carry On Wayward Son. The montage helped build the emotion that was going to be necessary to get through this last episode of this season. It was very well done – this is my kind of classic rock as I channel Dean continually.

THIS ARTICLE IS LOADED WITH SPOILERS!
Everything comes down to this episode. Will Sam have what it takes to take down Lilith. Can Dean live up to his promise to serve the lord, despite his continual misgivings? Does Castiel keep towing the company line? What will Ruby get from helping Sam all this time?
We are reminded of all that happened this year and brought full circle to where Castiel lets Sam out of his detox cell as ordered, and Sam walking out on Dean from last week, despite Deans desperate ultimatum to never come back if he walks out that door.
From Dean’s Side
Dean wants to stick to his ultimatum but Bobby snaps some sense into him, telling him that his father was weak in how he walked away from Sam instead of reconciling and that he (Dean) needs to quit being a whiney brat and get over it. “Family is supposed to make you miserable”

At the end of this conversation, Dean turns to say something and he suddenly finds himself in a gold trimmed white room. In the center of this room is a massive plate of cheeseburgers and beers. Dang.
In the ensuing dialog with Zachariah and Castiel, Dean humorously calls this The Suite Life of Zach and Cas. Zachariah even offers Dean Ginger from Gilligan’s Island, with Mary Ann thrown in for free… which gives Dean a moment of pause. He was tempted.
We find out that Lilith has broken all but the last seal. Dean later takes the higher road and tries to call Sam but has to leave a voice mail.
As Dean wants out of this heavenly room because he wants to see Sam, Zachariah tells him it’s a no-go because Zachariah wants the last seal to be broken. He’s banking on that and the fact that his side can win, dispatching evil once and for all. Even if it means destroying most of humanity in the process.

On a second attempt to call Sam, Castiel shows up and tells him he’s outside his coverage zone. Do you know how rich that sounded, coming from the level toned angel Castiel? It was priceless.
In the ensuing conversation Dean convinces Cas to break them out of this place, despite Cas’s reservations that they will be hunted down and killed. Cas is willing to do this because they need to stop Sam. <– Huh?
Poof, they land in Prophet Chuck’s house which confused the crap out of Chuck A: This is not how he wrote it. B: He was in the middle of ordering some prostitutes to go! They learn where Sam went, and while preparing to fend off the Archangel, Cas sends Dean to the convent in Maryland where Sam will be.
From Sam’s Side
We can see that Sam having walked out on Dean had its affect as he’s very distracted by what just took place while Ruby seems a bit annoyed with the whole dwelling on brother thing. That and the concrete realization that there is something evil within him.
When Dean first called, Sam missed it because he was headed off to capture Lilith’s chef, who is stealing babies from the hospital. Sam and Ruby catch up to her and with his powers back to fully charged, they snag her and find out where Lilith will be.
When Sam does finally get to his voicemail, he only hears a voicemail saying Dean wants to hunt him down because he’s a monster. I’m not sure it that was an old message, or a trick. I’m getting suspicious here gang.
Ruby and Sam head to the convent and confront Lilith. Lilith is amused and lets Sam take the first shot. That shot puts her down hard.
Almost Together, But Too Late
Dean comes around the corner in the convent to see Sam in the process of destroying Lilith and Ruby see’s Dean and slams the doors on him so he can’t get in.

Sam almost vanquishes Lilith and he stops for a second, distracted by hearing Dean yelling from the other side of the door. Ruby gets all impatient and rage filled and tells Sam to finish her. <– What!?
You see, Lilith IS the final seal. Ruby has played us all along. Dean was right about never trusting demons. What was I thinking.

Ruby has been working undercover for the downstairs bossman all along, to the point of getting Sam here to break this final seal.
Sam kills Lilith.
Dean gets in the room.
Together they kill Ruby. Beotch dead. Good.
The final seal breaks as Lilith’s blood forms the key. Sam yells over the noise to Dean that he’s coming. I hear for the first time, in Sam’s voice – fear.
Afterthoughts
Supernatural is so well written that it’s a shame it’s on the CW. Rich developing plot lines laced with insidiously well timed humor that doesn’t distract from the moment is pure joy to experience.
The paths that both brothers had to traverse to get to this point, I can only imagine, will make their bond stronger than ever before.
All the inner battles, the questions, the situations the Winchester brothers have endured. And they’ve endured it all to help save humanity, because that’s what they do.
Unlike the previous show on the hour before, this story flowed and had connecting points and closure with no questions. It was an incredible closer to the season and I look forward to next season.
This show needs to be on a different channel where it can get the ratings and exposure it deserves.
I hope everyone enjoyed this finale as much as I did.
Chime in and let us know what you took away from this season closer!

Why is it always the Archangels having a grudge against humans and starting Armageddon kind of story. I like supernatural especially the first season when everything was fresh. But this story has been done in the prophecy films and in many fiction novels.I enjoyed the finale but didn’t see anything new.
INSIDER53:
Technically, what is new these days? I’d say that there’s much that’s repeated except for the package wrapping.. ie: the actors and the characters. That’s the fresh part.
53? Are there 52 others of you?
Interesting… I have a difference of opinion with you about a TV show, which I said I liked, and you take the time to insinuate my name is not fresh or new, thereby insulting me in what you think is a clever way.Your own rule says no personal attacks and yet you couldn’t resist. Why?
This season finale was absolutely amazing…
The buildup was intense for what was coming and I found really interesting that the angels, supposedly the good guys, were the ones that wanted all for themselves. Concerning the voice message, I think Ruby made Sam hear that, you know, since he’s been drinking all of her blood (and the nurse demon said that she could mess things up in Sam’s mind if he drank her blood)
Another very unexpected thing, was that Lilith herself was the last seal. Considering all the slaughtering of the nuns, I thought it was an insanely diabolic pre-ritual of Azaziel waiting on the arrival of Lilith to break the seal. I also loved the little sarcastic jokes and comments, even from Cas.
Anyhow.. Sam and Dean together again and Castiel thinking for himself. Demons being sons of a bitches and Lucifer rising.. it may be a little too cliché, but even so, this was an amazing finale.
I loved the show. It’s the subtle touches that I’ve always found fresh and fun. Like the paintings changing after we find out that Zachariah is actually against Dean. Not just one painting but them all. They changed from pictures of the dawn and the heavens to death, destruction and the beast, himself.
Plus, after three years of fade to blacks as the ender, we finally got the white light. With Lucifer the lightbringer coming, you just had to fade to light. I just can’t wait for the final season.
Just one question, does anyone else feel that Sam is doomed.
I think that Sam is going to be Lucifer’s vessel on earth. That’s what Ruby meant when she said “He’s gonna repay you in ways you can’t imagine.” With Dean being the only one to take Lucifer down, we got one fantastic ride coming.
I think that there should be a big show dowm between “God and the Devil” with the winchester boy fighting all of hell and maybe some of heaven.
Great season finale unlike Smallville’s finale. Very well written show. When Zachariah is bragging about how the angels are going to crush the demons and how dean will be the one to stop Lucifer, that’s just telling you that the Angels are probably going to be in for a big surprise next season. It probably won’t be as rosy as he thinks and it will make for an interesting new season. Comic mom, next season will be the final one? Did not know about that. If it’s true, that will be a shame.
Insider: Get a grip. I didn’t even go where you think I went. I was actually agreeing with ya, and was wondering what the inspiration for your name was. Sorry there.
The season finale was absolutely great. The show has yet to let me down. I would prefer they do one last season and end it great. Please don’t drag it out 4 or 5 more seasons like another show on the same channel, which lost its luster(and my viewing) around the 5th season.
I loved it and I love the show. I think this truly is one of the greatest shows on Television. My only concern with the season finale is that next season will have to be all about stopping Lucifer and lets face it once you do that where do you go from there? Does that mean season 5 will be the end? Is it gonna be like Angel and end way to early?
I loved it…Supernatural is the only show I watch live, everything else gets DVR’d. I was so happy to see Ruby get knifed after she started acting like a puppy wanting a treat after the seal was broken. Ive been with this show since midway through season 1 and it’s consistently the highlight of my viewing week
We get the official Supernatural Mag at the store and the articles always list it as a five season show. The stars and the writer really want the show to go out on top.
That’s all I know.
I really hope they decide to go longer. The show really does deserve more than 5 seasons. It just bring back haunting memories of Angel which was canceled way to early.
I thought that season 4 ending was awesome!!! I caught that light ending instad of the fade to black.Maybe Sam will be Lucifer’s right hand demon or something, and Dean having Angel mojo in him will have to stop him.Naw That’s no fun,Maybe Cas,and Dean take the devil head on, I don’t know anything will be truelly great.
I’m really impressed with Supernatural. And I think doing only 5 amazing seasons is way better than trying to make something last longer than it should just to make more money. As it is, the show’s constructed more like a fantasy/horror novel than a pop tv show. It has a purposeful plot and character development. I think that makes it art as well as entertainment.
Terrific finale! I didn’t expect it to end exactly as it did. I thought for sure that Dean would fight as an Angel and Sam as his brother, a demon. I didn’t expect them to team up at the end.
I thought last year’s ending was stressful. And where’s God? “God’s left the building”? And left that asshat in charges? What’s that supposed to mean? And was it always part of the scheme to lock up Dean until it was too late? Everyone was played. Mostly Sam.
I’m glad that they didn’t ruin last year’s version of Ruby with this. I really liked her. This woman, meh, good riddens to bad rubbish I say. She was hot and that was it.
Sam had to figure that drinking the blood from a human for more power as a demon was pretty ironic.
Love this show!
Also, did anyone watch Bones season finale? It was a week for twisted endings.
‘Supernatural is so well written that it’s a shame it’s on the CW.’ and ‘This show needs to be on a different channel where it can get the ratings and exposure it deserves.’
im totally agree with you! this show is awesome, and the cw is not even promoting it, that, is really shame. im really enough of Gossip Crap and 90210, or maybe 1.921.0, the audience will get its season finale this tuesday. we want( need-must have) more show like Supernatural: can you imagine so how much depht, action, excitament, it all in one show? the season finale was so crazy, and, am i the only one sad for lilith’s death?? ho, i loved that crazy baby-adult bitch. what about castiel? he was amazing, and now is on dean’s side, against heaven and hell! ruby: she was really awesome in her ‘ok, you all were right, im a big bi*ch and i always joked with you’. i was really starting to think she was in love with sam. it was all acting!
the two brother that team up in the finale, sam say sorry, their faces in the end…. I WANT TO SEE SEASON 5!!!!!!! NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ps. what the hell was anna?! she was supposed to appear in the season finale! what happened to her?? WTF!
i think it was awsome but i did not like how they set up both dean and sam that was just bull and cas finally knows i hope what to do now can’t wait for season 5 and more to come supernatural is my favorite show lets watch dean and sam kick some major ass next season with hell and heavn
Cami to be fair most shows are not just entertainment, but art as well. Like them or not they are still art. Just not your cup of tea…. Personally I think the creators and everyone else involved in this show is so talented that they could easily carry it out to 7 seasons and have it still be great. I just think they should wait until they can’t come up with anything good instead of just setting a certain time to just stop regardless of if they can still do more good.
Almost forgot also for all the ideas about Castiel I’m pretty sure he is dead no way he could take out the archangel.
I say this sadly but I think it’s true. I’m sure that Castiel letting Dean free when he did was just part of the plan. I really like the dude who plays Castiel too. But the timing says he was doing his job so…
And won’t we be surprised when that pompous Archangel pops up as Lucifer next season? It’s just a feeling I guess. But I’d love Castiel to become a regular and stay on the show. He really adds a lot to it. When there was that near miss and I thought they were going to kill his body off I was yelling at the TV NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I hated when they killed the original Ruby, I didn’t want to have a new person that was already playing the role perfectly.
Yeah, I’m on drugs. Sorry for the lack of cohesion but you guys should be used to it by now.
I think when Dean asks “Where Is God in all of this.” Then Zachariah kinda shoots him down by saying God has left the building, is a joke to “Elvis has left the building”
Season 5 should really really be a grand one, I think. Better than the previous four.
Hey gang: Castiel will be a regular on the show next season.
The Thing that is so bloody cool in the Supernateral universe is the 1967 Chevy Impala, I wonder will the angels let Dean keep it when hes a full fledged Angel rather than beaming into hazerdous areas… That Car rocks… I hate to get off topic.
Just wish Smallville writers would take notice to this show…I mean they give you what you want to see
Que final mas bueno, espero ver pronto la nueva temporada de supernatural.
@ED
I agree! The finale was awesome and I can’t wait for next season to begin. They’ve done great cliffhangers the past two years. I can’t decide whether last year’s cliffhanger was more stressful/exciting or this year’s.
No. Last year’s was definitely more intense not taking away anything from this season’s cliffhanger but ending it with Dean on meat hooks and chains was pretty hard to beat. Yikes!
i love supernatural. although season 2 is my fav, this season was pretty amazing.
I think by far season 4 rocked!
Wow. This show never fails to amaze me. The actors, the writing, the plot, the cliffhangers–awesome. Whether this show continues for one more season or several more, I think we all can agree that this show never fails to impress.
Can’t wait for season 5. :]
