Supernatural co-showrunner Robert Singer reveals exactly when Castiel (Misha Collins) will return to the show. When Lucifer managed to kill Cas with an angel blade near the end of SPN's season 12 finale, fans naturally assumed that Sam and Dean's loyal heavenly companion wouldn't remain deceased for too long. After all, death is quite often not a permanent condition on the series, and Cas himself has already returned from a seemingly permanent demise on more than one occasion.

Still, that didn't stop Castiel's death from being a sad one in the moment, and a good chunk of last night's season 13 premiere of Supernatural dealt with the massive amounts of grief that Sam and Dean are going through over their fallen friend. Sure, the fans know he'll be back - after all, Cas has been on nearly every bit of the marketing for season 13 - but Sam and Dean don't, and they have no reason to assume that being murdered by the Prince of Darkness won't be enough to end Castiel's existence for good.

While fans have long-known Cas would be back by at least the Scooby-Doo crossover episode that's set to air during season 13, Supernatural co-showrunners Robert Singer and Andrew Dabb recently revealed to EW exactly when Castiel will make his grand return to the show. Singer confirmed that Castiel will first appear during episode three of season 13, set to air on October 26. Interestingly enough though, he and Dabb stopped short of revealing how exactly Cas will cheat death this time.

Castiel looks down in Supernatural

According to Singer, when fans first see Castiel, he won't be back on Earth. In fact, he won't be in heaven, hell, or purgatory either. Castiel will be in a place the show has never gone to before, which Dabb says fans will "be seeing for the first time through his eyes." For his part, Collins calls it "potentially the most boring place in the universe." While they stopped short of naming this location, it is likely The Empty, a blank void that reaper Billie once threatened to send Sam and Dean to.

Billie said that nobody comes back from The Empty, but there is obviously about to be an exception to that rule, as Castiel is set to reunite with Sam and Dean on Earth by episode six. How Cas manages to escape The Empty remains anyone's guess, but one wonders if Lucifer's powerful son Jack - who sees Castiel as a father figure - will end up playing a part in his resurrection.
